• I’m Danish, live in Copenhagen, and my girlfriend’s family lives in Bornholm, so I go there all the time. I’m not lying when I say this is the best holiday island in Denmark – you’re in for a treat

In this guide, you’ll get an overview of the best areas to stay, whether you prefer charming cobblestone streets, fantastic gastronomy or the raw power of nature.

I have stayed on the island several times and am sharing my best tips on where to get the most authentic Bornholm experience and the best value for money.

Let’s get the guide started: where to stay in Bornholm?

Best Areas in Bornholm

Here’s a quick overview of the best areas to stay in Bornholm:

• Gudhjem – Charming fishing village with world-class gastronomy
• Svaneke – Denmark’s most beautiful market town with unique atmosphere
• Allinge – Perfect base with beach and shops
• Sandvig – Scenic area near Hammershus

This guide thus gives you the very best starting point for choosing accommodation in Bornholm that suits your preferred way of holidaying, whether it’s an active holiday, a holiday with children, or if you have a weakness for history or art.

1. Gudhjem – Gastronomy and Cosiness by the Sea

Gudhjem is simply the epitome of Bornholm’s charm. This hilly fishing village, practically built into the cliff, offers a unique combination of gastronomy, art and maritime traditions.

The town is perfectly located on Bornholm’s northeast coast, approximately 30-40 minutes by car from Rønne.

The atmosphere in Gudhjem is relaxed and authentic. Here, local fishermen, food enthusiasts and artists meet in a wonderful mix.

The pace is calm, and especially outside the high season, you can really feel the special tranquillity that characterises the town.

The ambience is somewhat reminiscent of what you find in small coastal towns in Crete or Cyprus – just with a unique Nordic twist.

The main attractions include the famous smoked herring (try the traditional “Sun over Gudhjem“), Gudhjem Museum and the many art galleries.

Shopping is limited to a few exquisite shops with local crafts and delicacies. The restaurant scene is absolutely exceptional, with the Michelin-starred Kadeau as the flagship (though it’s only open from April to September).

One of my personal favourite things to do near Gudhjem is to eat cake at Mrs Petersen’s café.

Price levels are generally high, particularly in high season, but the quality matches. The area is very safe, but be mindful of the steep streets, which can be challenging for those with limited mobility.

Hotel Klippen

2. Svaneke – Denmark’s Most Beautiful Market Town

Svaneke has not been named Denmark‘s most beautiful market town without reason.

This architectural gem on Bornholm’s east coast is like something out of a fairy tale, with its perfectly preserved half-timbered houses and charming square.

The eastern location gives you Denmark’s first sunrise and a perfect base for exploring eastern Bornholm.

The atmosphere in Svaneke is characterised by an active artist and craftsman community. The town buzzes with life around its many speciality shops, galleries and workshops, while maintaining a peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

It’s somewhat reminiscent of the atmosphere in Skagen in Northern Jutland, just on a more intimate scale.
Must-sees include the old sweet boiling house, Svaneke Brewery and the Johannes Larsen Museum.

Shopping opportunities are exceptional with a focus on crafts, ceramics and local delicacies. The restaurant scene offers everything from gourmet to cosy cafés.

Price levels are moderate to high, but the quality is correspondingly high. The area is very safe and suitable for all age groups.

Places to stay in Svaneke

Charming hotel in historic surroundings in the town centre. Spacious rooms with classic décor and a lovely restaurant focusing on Bornholm ingredients.

3. Allinge – The Perfect Family Base

Allinge offers the perfect balance between town life and nature.

This former fishing town has evolved into a modern holiday destination with plenty of facilities, while maintaining its authentic charm.

The location on the north coast provides easy access to both Hammershus and the best bathing beaches.

You’re about 30 minutes by car from Rønne, and the bus network is well-developed from here, although public transport can generally be challenging on the island.

The cycle paths along the coast are fantastic with stretches suitable for most people.

The atmosphere is lively but relaxed, especially in summer when the People’s Meeting (Folkemødet) attracts visitors from across the country (that’s when hotels in Allinge are extremely expensive).

The rest of the year, the pace is more relaxed, and you get a genuine sense of Bornholm life.

The main attractions include the cosy harbour, the fine sandy beaches and the charming town square. Shopping options are good with both supermarkets and speciality shops. The restaurant selection is broad with particular emphasis on seafood.

Price levels are moderate, and you generally get good value for money. The area is very family-friendly and safe.

Places to stay in Allinge

Nordlandet Hotel

Luxurious design hotel with spectacular location on the rocks. Modern Nordic décor, gourmet restaurant and rooms with sea views.

4. Sandvig – Scenic and Peaceful

Sandvig is the perfect choice for nature lovers.

This little gem is located in the northernmost part of Bornholm, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and close to Hammershus.

The town is about 30 minutes by car from Rønne. Bus connections from here are OK, and the area is perfect for hiking and cycling. The remote location provides a special tranquility, especially outside high season.

The atmosphere is authentic and unpolished. Here local fishermen meet with nature enthusiasts, and the pace is notably slower than in the larger towns. It’s somewhat reminiscent of the atmosphere in small Norwegian fishing villages.

Must-sees include Hammerknuden, the Opal Lake and of course Hammershus. The Hammerknuden hiking trail includes a visit to all three.

Shopping is limited to the basics, but the restaurants serve excellent seafood – though there aren’t an overwhelming number of restaurants to choose from.

Price levels are moderate, and the area is very safe, but be prepared to travel for major shopping.

Places to stay in Sandvig

Where NOT to Stay in Bornholm

Although Rønne is the island’s “capital” and arrival town for most visitors, I would recommend choosing another area to stay in.

The town lacks much of the charm and idyll that characterises the other Bornholm towns, and the atmosphere is more “ordinary Danish provincial town” than “magical holiday island”.

Rønne of course has its own history and some nice old streets, but as a tourist, you’ll get a much better experience staying in, for example, Gudhjem or Svaneke. Here you’re closer to the most popular attractions, and you’ll take home the genuine Bornholm atmosphere.

Particularly the area around the harbour and the industrial quarters can seem a bit dull and lifeless in the evening. Instead, choose one of the charming fishing villages where you get more value for money and a more authentic experience.

Smaller towns such as Tejn and Hasle often offer cheaper accommodation options but have little else to offer tourists.

The towns have few restaurants, cultural offerings and with poor bus connections, I therefore recommend choosing one of the towns that has more to offer in the local area.

How do you get to Bornholm?

Getting to Bornholm is straightforward, with several convenient transport options available.

The most popular and cost-effective way to reach the island from Copenhagen is the combined bus and ferry service.

Express buses depart regularly from Copenhagen, taking you directly to Ystad in Sweden, where you’ll seamlessly transfer to the ferry to Rønne.

The entire journey takes approximately 4.5 hours, and tickets can be purchased as a single journey through Kombardoexpressen.dk.

The buses are comfortable, equipped with Wi-Fi, and your luggage is handled throughout the journey. This is the way I usually travel from Copenhagen to Bornholm.

The fastest option is flying from Copenhagen Airport, with a flight time of just 35 minutes.

But then you have to get to Copenhagen Airport, go through security and Rønne Airport isn’t well connected with public transport – so the bus and ferry is pretty much as fast and way cheaper.

There’s also a ferry service from Sassnitz in Germany, taking around 3.5 hours to reach Bornholm.

If you’re travelling from Sweden, you can independently take the ferry from Ystad to Rønne, which takes 1 hour and 15 minutes. This route is particularly popular during summer months, and it’s advisable to book in advance during peak season.

Remember that during summer, especially around the Folkemødet festival in June, transport to Bornholm can get fully booked weeks in advance, so early planning is essential.

1. Indre By – best area to stay in the city centre

Indre By, which means Inner City in Danish, is the absolute centre of Copenhagen, and this is where you will find most of the best things to do in Copenhagen.

Indre By is also the Old Town of Copenhagen, so this is where you can truly get under the skin of the city’s rich history of several hundred years.

In Indre By, you will find, among other things, famous attractions such as Tivoli Gardens, Christiansborg, Amalienborg, Rådhuspladsen (City Hall Square), Strøget and, of course, Nyhavn.

In Indre By, you will never walk many meters before stumbling upon a restaurant, café or bar.

This is the area where you will find both the most upper-class restaurants, but at the same time, there are hidden gems that the locals go to Indre By to visit, so unlike other European capitals, central Copenhagen is not just a tourist hell.

In other words, it makes good sense to stay in the Inner City for most travellers to Copenhagen who comes to the city to have a traditional city break and want to be able to go to the well-known attractions.

At the same time, the Copenhagen metro network is so good that you can quickly get around to all the other areas I mention in the guide here, so even if you stay in Indre By, you can easily experience the trendy Vesterbro or the multicultural Nørrebro.

There are no disadvantages to staying in the inner city when you come to Copenhagen.

It is the best area to book accommodation for 99% of all tourists visiting Copenhagen to enjoy our beautiful capital.

The only thing against booking a hotel in Indre By is the price. Because the area is the most desirable, it is also here that the hotels cost more than in some of the other areas I mention in the guide here.

But if you can afford it, I recommend looking for a good hotel in Indre By. Below I share a few good options in several price ranges.

Places to stay in the city centre (Indre By)

Indre By is a relatively large area, so there is a difference between whether you end up with a hotel around City Hall Square or by the Marble Church. It’s not because one area is better than the other – you just get to experience different things in your small local area.

Below I have selected some of the best hotels in Copenhagen in different price ranges. The hotels are all located in Indre By and are close to Copenhagen’s best things to do.

Luxury hotels in Indre By

Hotel Skt Petri is one of the best hotels in Copenhagen, and the location could not be more central.

The hotel is truly one of the most luxurious in Copenhagen and is, among other things, known for having housed stars such as Mickael Jackson and Justin Bieber.

In other words: if you want to stay at one of the most prestigious hotels in Copenhagen, where there are delicious restaurants, a rooftop bar and a gym, then you must book Hotel Skt Petri.

Manon Les Suites in central Copenhagen offers a sustainable and stylish stay near top attractions and within walking distance of the trendy Vesterbro area.

This hotel ensures a memorable experience with its array of amenities, such as an indoor pool, fitness centre, and sauna.

The hotel is a hit among travellers with its commitment to a relaxed yet upscale atmosphere.

Hotel Sanders is another 5-star hotel in central Copenhagen – just a stone’s throw from Nyhavn, where all the tourists come to pass and very close to Copenhagen’s harbour, which is an excellent place to chill out in the summer.

I have to admit that the decoration and atmosphere at Hotel Sanders in Copenhagen is one of the best when it comes to hotels. Book Hotel Sanders in Indre By, and be sure that the setting for your holiday in Copenhagen is perfect.

Mid-range hotels in Indre By

Hotel Kong Arthur is a hotel in Indre By close to Nørrebro and the popular Torvehallerne. The hotel has 4 stars and has, among other things, a sauna, 3 different restaurants and a top-rated spa area attached.

So if you want to stay in a good hotel in Copenhagen with a spa, consider booking into Hotel Kong Arthur. The hotel is located in a slightly underrated area of Indre By, where the nearby Nansensgade offers many excellent restaurants and bars with a rather cool atmosphere.

Copenhagen Strand Hotel is close to the previously mentioned Hotel Sanders, so we are back close to Nyhavn and the waterfront.

It is a 4-star hotel with charming rooms and a super-chic breakfast restaurant, where a lot has been done with the decor.

The Huxley Copenhagen provides a tranquil yet central accommodation experience, rated very well by travellers.

Positioned in a peaceful street, it is conveniently behind the Royal Theatre and Nyhavn, within a stone’s throw from key shopping areas, restaurants, museums, and the Opera House.

Rooms are allergy-free, with housekeeping services, safes, and large Samsung flatscreen TVs for a hassle-free stay.

The possibility of renting bicycles also makes city exploration a breeze.

Hotel Skt Annæ is a place to stay in the city centre that I would almost call a hidden gem.

Next House Copenhagen is a real gem!

This mega-hostel offers a variety of rooms, from private options that rival hotel quality to dorms with private pods.

It’s a fun place with five bars, a restaurant, a gym, and a football pitch. Plus, it’s clean and safe, with options for female-only rooms.

Location-wise, it’s a winner too—just a 5-minute walk from the Central Station and close to all main attractions.

The atmosphere? Super laid back and friendly. In short, it’s a top-notch place to crash while exploring Copenhagen.

Wakeup Copenhagen Borgergade is possibly the best cheap hotel in Indre By. Here you get a small room with everything you need on a trip to Copenhagen, where you want to stay cheaply and centrally.

There are several different room types and family rooms, so if you are travelling to Copenhagen with children and looking for cheap accommodation, it makes sense to book into Wakeup Copenhagen Borgergade.

Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is a genuine hostel for the young or young at heart.

If you are travelling to Copenhagen as a backpacker or want to stay somewhere where you can meet other travellers at the bar, then Copenhagen Downtown Hostel is the perfect, cheap place to stay in Indre By.

The bar is also quite popular among ordinary Copenhageners who come there for cheap drinks.

You can book both private rooms with a private bathroom or classic hostel rooms – there are many options; see them all here.

2. Vesterbro – best place to stay for nightlife & trendy vibes

The next area we will pass is located southwest of Indre By and starts at City Hall Square.

If you arrive in Copenhagen by train or take the regional train from Copenhagen Airport, you will arrive at Vesterbro, as the Central Station is located at Vesterbro.

Vesterbro is originally one of the real working-class neighborhoods in Copenhagen, and if you had told the locals back in the 1980s that Vesterbro would one day become one of the hippest areas for trendy travelers from all over the world, they would have laughed their ass off – and maybe given you a little smack on the cheek

In other words, Vesterbro was a bit of a rough neighbourhood, but the area has developed over the past 20 years, so it is now one of the most popular areas and a place where many young parents have bought a home.

However, a bit of the old, harsh atmosphere can still be found outside the Central Station on the first part of Istedgade and the surrounding side streets. In the old days, Istedgade was Copenhagen’s red light district, and there is still a bit of that at night.

That is why it is extra crucial that you read the reviews when you book a hotel in Vesterbro, as there are still hotels that are (almost) rented out on an hourly basis…

You can, of course, just book one of the hotels I mention below – or write a comment to the guide here if you have any doubts.

Vesterbro is the perfect area to stay if you are a young couple who wants to go out for drinks at some of the best bars in Copenhagen.

The Meat Packing District (Kødbyen) is a mecca with plenty of restaurants, trendy beer bars and some of the coolest nightclubs in Copenhagen.

From Kødbyen, it is only a 15-20 minute walk to Tivoli Gardens, City Hall and Indre By.

Vesterbro has both the central station of Copenhagen, where there is a metro, trains and buses and the metro station at Enghave Plads.

So it has also become straightforward to get around the rest of the city from Vesterbro.

Places to stay in Vesterbro

As previously mentioned, staying away from the very cheap hotels at the start of Istedgade and Vesterbrogade is vital. Few people will probably book these hotels after seeing pictures and reviews, but I wanted to warn you again.

And having said that, Vesterbro is also one of the trendiest areas in the whole of Scandinavia, so there aren’t many of these dingy places left – on the other hand, massive investment has been made in new, beautiful hotels in Vesterbro.

Let’s take a closer look at them.

Best Luxury Hotel in Vesterbro (with a rooftop pool)

Villa Copenhagen is the only hotel with a rooftop pool in Copenhagen and perhaps the best breakfast in the whole city.

The hotel is located right next to the Central Station, but on the good side, right next to Tivoli Gardens and a few minute’s walk from the cosy streets of Indre By, so even though the postcode says Vesterbro, it is almost like staying in Indre By, but very close to Vesterbro and Kødbyen.

Best mid-range hotel in Vesterbro

Scandic Kødbyen is a brand-new hotel right next to Kødbyen (the Meatpacking District).

The hotel rooms are stylish, hinting at the industrial chic that characterizes the surrounding Meatpacking District.

The hotel also offers bicycles for rent, perfect for exploring the city.

Coco Hotel is a great alternative place to stay in Vesterbro too. With a central location near eclectic shops and gastronomic wonders, it’s an ideal base for urban exploration.

The hotel’s minimalist design embraces hygge, Denmark’s famed cosy concept, creating an inviting atmosphere that extends from the stylish rooms to the lush courtyard garden.

The included organic breakfast and the buzzing in-house café fuel city adventures.

Best cheap hotel in Vesterbro

Steel House Copenhagen is a new cheap hostel with an indoor pool and the option to book private rooms with a private bathroom. Still, it’s cheap!

This next hotel in Vesterbro is so new that I didn’t know about it until my friend from Manchester in England told me he had booked it for a surprise trip to Copenhagen

The place is called CityHub Copenhagen, and it’s your perfect pick if you’re looking for an affordable yet centrally situated place to stay in Copenhagen.

The rooms, or ‘hubs’, are compact and smartly designed to maximize space and provide a cozy atmosphere.

The location of this hotel is perfect if you want to stay in Vesterbro and experience the area like a local.

3. Nørrebro – best area if you want to travel like a local

Nørrebro is probably my favourite area in Copenhagen and an area where tourists haven’t really found their way. Therefore, Nørrebro is also the most authentic area of Copenhagen in this guide.

In other words, Nørrebro is an area where “real” people live and the restaurants, cafes and bars have to live off the locals – that’s why they’re perfect!

I have lived in Nørrebro for most of my time in Copenhagen, so I have enough tips for a whole post just about Nørrebro, but as a starting point, you have to experience the cosy area around Jægersborggade and Stefansgade in Ydre Nørrebro.

You will find everything from local wine shops to Michelin-starred restaurants – in a street and an area that 20 years ago would never have found its way into a guide about the best places in Copenhagen.

Walk from Jægersborggade down to inner Nørrebro and explore streets such as Griffenfeldsgade, Blågårds Plads, Elmegade and Ravnsborggade. You could spend a whole weekend eating and drinking through Nørrebro.

Nørrebro is a melting pot of students, young creative types and descendants of the first immigrants from the Middle East. That is why you will find countless kebab shops and exciting restaurants to eat food from around the world in Nørrebro.

I recommend staying in Nørrebro to anyone who wants to experience an area with a bit of an edge and, simultaneously, is where the Danes go out.

For families travelling to Copenhagen with kids, it might make better sense to choose another area, as the streets may be busy at weekends, but for other curious travellers, I would recommend considering Nørrebro as a base for the trip to Copenhagen.

Places to stay in Nørrebro

So, Nørrebro is not a tourist area as such – although you can be in Indre By in 10-15 minutes via the Queen Louise Bridge or the metro – so there are not very many hotels to choose from in Nørrebro.

If you are looking for a luxury hotel in Nørrebro, you will have to look far, but there are still some lovely places to stay in Nørrebro.

Best hotel in Nørrebro

One of the best hotels in Nørrebro is the 4-star Avenue Hotel Copenhagen by Brøchner Hotels, located in inner Nørrebro, right on the border with Frederiksberg and Indre By.

In other words, this hotel is perhaps the best place to stay for you who want to experience all the best of Nørrebro but still be only a 5-minute walk from the metro station at Forum, from where you can get to Nyhavn and Kongens Nytorv at 3-4 minutes.

Avenue Hotel has many different rooms and a delicious breakfast buffet. The hotel is within a few minute’s walk of some of my favourite places in Copenhagen: Satang Thai Bistro, the city’s best Thai restaurant and Himmerriget, which is one of the best beer bars (that few tourists know about!).

Cheap accommodation in Nørrebro

If you are looking for a cheap hotel in Nørrebro, then Hotel M18 is a good bet. It is a 3-star hotel without superb comfort, but on the other hand, the location is excellent, and if you book ahead, you can often get the stay at a great rate.

The hotel is a stone’s throw from Nørrebrogade, Guldbergsgade and Skt Hans Torv, some of the best places to stroll around Nørrebro and Copenhagen.

So if you want a cheap stay in the heart of Nørrebro, check out the hotel here.

Nørrebro invites you to stay in a hostel because the district is generally so young and hip.

I can therefore recommend taking a look at the Urban Camper Hostel, which is located right next to Nørrebro Station, where there are both buses, the metro, and the S-train, so you can quickly get around all of Copenhagen and there too is plenty to do within walking distance of the hostel.

At Urban Camper Hostel, there is a large bar, lots of different room types with everything from shared dormitories to private rooms and the possibility to rent bicycles, which is an excellent idea if you are travelling to Copenhagen in the summer months.

4. Copenhagen Waterfront – best value for money area

And then we are going to an area that does not have its own postcode but is instead both in Indre By and Vesterbro.

However, I do not think the hotels in this area fit under Indre By or Vesterbro because they are a little further away from the central places in both Indre By and Vesterbro.

On the other hand, the hotels here at Copenhagen Waterfront are either cheap and brand new or incredibly luxurious, and you get more for your money here than in the very centre of the city.

Therefore, I recommend booking your stay in Copenhagen here if you would like to save money on your accommodation or would like to stay right down to the harbour during the summer when all Copenhageners flock to the harbour baths.

You should be aware that at some of these hotels, it may be a short walk of 10-15 minutes walk before you get to either Fisketorvet Shopping Mall or The Meat Packing District on one side or Indre By’s cosy streets on the other.

So this area is a bit special, and I thought about whether I should include it in the guide here, but I think there can be good value for money by staying here when you look at how good the hotels are and how much lower the prices are here compared to just 5-600 meters further inside the inner city.

Places to stay at the Copenhagen Waterfront

So let me present a few of the hotels in the area and at the same time tell you what you can expect in terms of distances.

Luxury hotels by the harbour

The best hotel at the Copenhagen Waterfront is the luxury hotel Copenhagen Marriott Hotel, which is 5-star and has its own restaurants, bars and steam room with a sauna. It is an impressive hotel, with many rooms overlooking the harbour and Islands Brygge on the other side.

In the summer, you can stroll to the harbour swimming pool and jump into the water with the many other happy Copenhageners who are sunbathing and enjoying the summer.

If you are staying at the Copenhagen Marriott Hotel, you can walk up to Tivoli Gardens and the Central Station in 10 minutes, while a stroll to the City Hall Square will take a quarter of an hour.

So here you still stay within walking distance of most of what you would like to experience in Copenhagen as a tourist.

The other excellent hotel at Copenhagen Waterfront is called Copenhagen Island Hotel.

It is located significantly further from the centre of Copenhagen, but on the other hand, right next to Fisketorvet Shopping Mall and only a 5-minute walk to The Meat Packing District in Vesterbro and Dybbølsbro Station, where you can take the S-train to get to Indre By in a few minutes.

It is a 4-star hotel with many rooms with ocean views and is also particularly good for families with children, as there are special family rooms.

Copenhagen Island Hotel is for those of you who are okay with staying a little outside the absolute centre of Copenhagen but prioritise having a good hotel that is significantly cheaper than what a 4-star hotel in the centre costs.

Scandic Spectrum is a great choice if you’re seeking a modern hotel with an excellent location.

I visited this hotel recently for a saunagus event in their pool and spa area, and this is probably one of the best hotels in Copenhagen – when you consider the price, too.

Positioned by the waterfront, it’s just a 10-minute walk to the city center, offering scenic views and easy access to Copenhagen’s main attractions.

The hotel is notably new (I think it’s from 2021), featuring contemporary design and state-of-the-art amenities.

One of the highlights is the brilliant indoor pool and spa area, perfect for relaxation and rejuvenation after a day of exploring the city.

It’s definitely one of the best new hotels in Copenhagen, in my opinion.

Cheap accommodation in central Copenhagen

As previously mentioned, some really cheap hotels are also at Copenhagen Waterfront. One of the newest and best located is Wakeup Copenhagen Bernstorffsgade.

We are back in the Inner City part of the area so that you can walk to all the well-known sights in Copenhagen.

Cheap accommodation for groups

One of the most well-known hostels in Copenhagen is called Danhostel Copenhagen City and is eminently located right by the Langebro, which connects Copenhagen with Amager (and Christianshavn, which we will look at in more detail soon).

It is a colossal hostel with 192 rooms, and you can book everything from superior private apartments with room for 4 people to rooms with room for 8 people and much more.

So if you are a group travelling to Copenhagen and are looking for accommodation for many people in a place with a good location, consider booking into Danhostel Copenhagen City.

5. Christianshavn – stay in the cosiest area of Copenhagen

The next area in the guide on the best places to stay in Copenhagen is just a short walk over Knippelsbro or Inderhavnsbroen (“the Kissing Bridge”) from the Inner City and Nyhavn.

We are going over to the old working-class neighbourhood, Christianshavn. Christianshavn is a relatively small area consisting of several small islands connected by small bridges over the canals.

Christianshavn is technically part of Indre By, but the area laid out by King Christian the 4th in 1618 is something of its own.

It is here in the area that we also find Freetown Christiania, where naturally you cannot book into a 5-star hotel

However, there is a massive difference between Christiania and Christianshavn. The latter is one of the nicest areas in Copenhagen, especially in the summer when the area comes alive, so it is an excellent place to stay.

As previously mentioned, you can be in Indre By by Christiansborg and Strøget in 10 minutes, so Christianshavn is still very central.

The only challenge is that there are not that many hotels in Christianshavn.

Places to stay in Christianshavn

The challenge that there are incredibly few hotels in Christianshavn made me consider not including the area in the guide here, but that would also have been a shame.

Because even though the hotels in Christianshavn are quickly booked up, you can be lucky if you book your trip to Copenhagen early on.

Best hotel in Christianshavn

The best hotel in Christianshavn is undoubtedly the new NH Collection Copenhagen. One of my running routes goes right past the hotel here, so I was curious to see how it would look after the building had served as business premises for many years.

Now that the place has been renovated in style, you can book into one of perhaps the best hotels in Copenhagen – at least, it is one of the hotels with the best location.

NH Collection Copenhagen is right by the harbour, so many rooms have a beautiful view of the harbour and Inner City.

It is a luxury hotel with 5 stars and many different room types, so if you want to stay in a presidential suite in Copenhagen with a sea view, then NH Collection Copenhagen is the place for you – but there are also ordinary rooms that are somewhat cheaper.

The hotel itself has a bar right next to the harbour, but otherwise, you can slip into the wine bar right next door, where you can meet Copenhagen’s hipsters over an orange wine or whatever the cool kids are drinking at the moment

A cool place to stay in Copenhagen

If you would like to spend the night unconventionally on your trip to Copenhagen, you should consider booking into CPH Living, which is also right down to the water at Christianshavn.

CPH Living is a houseboat and, therefore, a somewhat unconventional hotel.

An outstanding offer for accommodation for those of you who want to stay with a sea view and on the water.

6. Østerbro – best area for families

The last area I considered for a long time should be included in the list. Because it has to be said: there is not as much to do in Østerbro as in the other areas in this travel guide to Copenhagen’s best areas.

It is one of the more upper-class areas in Copenhagen, and there are certainly a few lovely streets, such as Nordre Frihavnsgade from Trianglen and Ryesgade, which goes all the way to Nørrebro.

But otherwise, Østerbro is primarily an area where wealthy families live, and I think you can feel that when you walk around the area.

While all the other areas in this guide are places I go to because there are good restaurants or just because it’s a nice place to be, I would never think of going to Østerbro to hang out – and that’s how all other Danes I know feel.

But I still include Østerbro in the guide here, as the area is very well connected with the metro, S-train, intercity train and the Øresund train, which runs both to Malmö in Sweden and to Elsinore, where you might want to visit Kronborg Castle.

In addition, as previously mentioned, Østerbro is very quiet and, therefore, highly family-friendly. So if you are travelling to Copenhagen with children and would like to stay in a good hotel, there are several good options in Østerbro.

If you are going to a concert in Parken, it might also make sense to stay in Østerbro – but there is a metro from Trianglen a few minutes’ walk away, so it is no necessity.

Places to stay in Østerbro

Østerbro has quite a few hotels, and many are also relatively new, so there are some outstanding accommodation options in the area.

One of the best hotels in Østerbro is undoubtedly Charlottehaven, which has an indoor swimming pool, a fitness centre and rooms with an outstanding view of Nordhavn and Øresund.

It is perhaps the hotel in Copenhagen with the best view, and the location right next to Nordhavn Station means that you can quickly get either north or into the centre in a short time.

Charlottehaven is also very family-friendly, as you can choose between many different room types and small apartments.

Another fantastic hotel in Østerbro is Comwell Copenhagen Portside Dolce by Wyndham, a brand new hotel in Nordhavn right next to Østerbro.

It is a hotel perfect for those looking for a place to spend the night in Copenhagen who wants comfort in beautiful surroundings.

The hotel is of the type where Copenhageners could book in for a single night to relax and slow down. There is everything from ordinary rooms to executive suites – see all rooms here.

More centrally on Østerbro in Ryesgade, as mentioned earlier, we find Rye 115 Hotel, a 3-star hotel with excellent reviews from previous guests.

Here you stay within walking distance of Søerne and Nørrebro and can take the metro to Kongens Nytorv and Nyhavn in a few minutes.

Where not to stay in Copenhagen?

Copenhagen is the capital of Denmark and a large city with over 1 million inhabitants, but the city is relatively easy to get around by either metro, S-train or bus.

So no matter where you stay in Copenhagen, you will always be close to a form of transport that can take you to other areas.

So as such, there is no terrible place to stay in Copenhagen. If I have to point to where not to stay in Copenhagen, I would not recommend Amager Øst and the area around Amager Strandpark during the winter months, as there is not much going on.

In the summer, on the other hand, you want to live close to the city’s best beach, and therefore it can make good sense.

Amager West around Field’s and Ørestaden is never a good place to stay in Copenhagen. It’s probably the area with the least soul in the whole city, so don’t book in here – even if you’re going to a concert in the Royal Arena.

There is a metro a few minutes’ walk from the Royal Arena, so it’s better to book a place in Indre By or one of the other areas I mention in the guide here.

There are also a few hotels in Sydhavn, which you should not book unless you have a car or are okay with taking both bus and metro if you want to get around to the well-known sights in Copenhagen.

Let’s get started with the guide: what to do in Copenhagen?

1. Rent a boat and sail the harbour

This is my absolute favourite thing to do in Copenhagen.

It is surprising how much fun it is to sail around and be able to control where you are going.

The boats sail pretty slowly, so there is never any danger, but at the same time it also means that you do not reach very much in 1 hour so I’d recommend booking the boat for at least 2 hours.

There are many different providers of boats, but GoBoat is the best known.

This is one of the most popular things to do in Copenhagen among locals, so make sure you book your boat online well in advance.

If you don’t feel like steering the boat yourself, you can also relatively cheaply book a small boat with your own captain, who will take care of sailing you around to the most famous sights and the hidden gems you wouldn’t usually know about.

In addition, the captain tells you about everything you see from the boat, so if you want to get total value and see some of the city’s best sights from the canal in your own boat, it makes good sense to rent this boat.

2. Tivoli Gardens

If you are going to Copenhagen, you must visit Tivoli.

It is always worth the time and the money to visit the beautiful garden and amusement park in the heart of Copenhagen.

If you want to make it easier for yourself to visit Tivoli, you can book your tickets from home.

You decide for yourself whether you want to settle for an entrance ticket so you can walk around and enjoy the garden or whether you also want a tour pass so you can come up and try the many rides.

Both tickets can be bought online.

There are plenty of restaurants, bars and street-food options in Tivoli, so I got to warn you: once you go in, you might end up spending longer than you think

Tivoli is one of the main tourist attractions in Copenhagen, but it’s also close to every Danes’ heart as we’ve all got so many fond memories of coming here as children.

So this is truly one of the top things to do in Copenhagen.

Get tickets to Tivoli here and skip the queue.

Especially in the summer, there can be long queues, so getting a skip-the-line ticket is a good idea.

If you’ve bought the Copenhagen Card, your entry to Tivoli Gardens is covered.

3. Amalienborg Castle

If you are interested in the Danish royal family, you should make your way past Amalienborg Castle. This is where Denmark’s monarch lives, which means Her Majesty Queen Margrethe II at the time of writing.

You will find Amalienborg Castle close to several other attractions in the centre of Copenhagen, which are also worth visiting if you pass by.

If you pass by Amalienborg Castle, you can time it to experience the changing of the guard of the Queen’s Guards, which takes place at 12.

It’s not as spectacular as in London, but it’s worth seeing.

The castle square is surrounded by the four royal mansions forming Amalienborg Castle together. These are Christian VII, Christian VIII, Christian IX, and Frederik VIII.

In the latter, you will find the Amalienborg Museum, where you can step directly into history and see royal life from the inside.

The Copenhagen Card gives access to Amalienborg Castle.

4. Christiansborg

When you have visited where the Danish regent resides, you should almost also make your way past Christiansborg Castle, or just Christiansborg as it is colloquially referred to.

You can visit Denmark’s most important workplace, Folketinget – the parliament.

One of the unique things about Christiansborg’s history must be that the castle burned down twice, so the building was built over three stages. The last time it burned was on 3 October 1884, and it was not until 1928 that the castle was considered to have been finally rebuilt.

Today, the castle is divided into two, with the Folketinget housed in one wing, while the Royal House represents the other.

It is possible to get guided tours of both the Parliament and the royal chambers, but you must be aware that the two bodies are divided, and you must therefore book tickets for both places if you want to see both parts of the palace.

By now, you’ve probably guessed what grants you access to Christiansborg?

Yep, the Copenhagen Card.

5. Kronborg Castle (day trip from Copenhagen)

The next castle on the list is Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, one of Denmark’s most important and beautiful castles. However, I would only recommend visiting it if you have several days to do well in Copenhagen.

The tour can quickly take a few hours out of your day, so if you are short on time and want to see as much as possible, you should focus on everything you can see inside Copenhagen itself.

But if you have time, Kronborg in Elsinore is a great experience.

Here you can follow in the footsteps of Shakespeare’s Hamlet, where Kronborg, or Elsinore, plays a central role. The castle was given precisely that location because of its location, right where Øresund is narrowest.

It was a strategically important location for Denmark to have a fortress because it was the only way to the baltic sea.

Since 1938, Kronborg has been open to the public, and you have the opportunity, among other things, to visit Holger Danske (Ogier the Dane), who sits in the casemates under the castle – ready to wake up if Denmark is in danger!

Book a day trip to Kronborg, Roskilde and Frederiksborg here (the tour gets fantastic reviews).

You could also take the train from Copenhagen Central Station to Elsinore which takes 45 minutes and then walk to the Castle in just about 15 mins.

And yes – the Copenhagen Card covers the entrance to Kronborg as well.

6. Canal Tour

One of the best experiences and things to do in Copenhagen is a tour of the canals.

On a canal cruise, you will be sailed past some of the city’s most important monuments and buildings, and along the way, you will be told lively stories about the Copenhagen sights you pass along the way.

The guide will speak Danish and English, which is understandable for everyone.

Your canal cruise can start from Nyhavn, for example.

The trip around Copenhagen’s beautiful canals usually takes an hour, so there is plenty of room in the schedule to experience many other things in Copenhagen on the same day.

On the trip around the canals, you will, among other things, pass monuments and buildings such as:

• The Little Mermaid
• Christiansborg
• Amalienborg Castle
• The National Bank
• The Opera House

7. The Little Mermaid

Yes, I need to include The Little Mermaid in my guide to things to do in Copenhagen. Why? Because it is one of the city’s best-known sights and something many tourists want to see.

If you ask me about my honest opinion on The Little Mermaid, I would say that you shouldn’t go out of your way and see the little statue only for the experience – you should do it only if you fancy the walk from Nyhavn.

There’s a standing joke here in Denmark – and I’m not sure if it’s true – that once a tourist asked a tour guide if it was possible to get to “the top of the little mermaid”.

She was devastated when she learned that The Little Mermaid is, in fact – very little…

Okay, so I’ve mentioned her – no more about The Little Mermaid (Copenhagen’s most overrated thing to do) in this guide

On the other hand, I would like to mention her neighbour, Kastellet.

8. The Citadel (Kastellet)

Right next to The Little Mermaid is one of Copenhagen’s old defences, Kastellet.

Denmark’s military still uses the Citadel, but it is open to us ordinary citizens, and you can have a nice walk on the ramparts.

From here you can actually also look over to The Little Mermaid – if you can spot her (she truly is tiny)

From Kastellet, you should also make your way past the beautiful Gefion Fountain and St Alban’s Church.

9. Experience Copenhagen nightlife on a bar crawl

If you want to get out and experience the nightlife in Copenhagen, it might be an idea to book a place on a genuine bar crawl.

You, and the rest of the evening’s group, will be guided around by a knowledgeable guide on the trip.

You will pass many different bars and clubs, and you can look forward to skipping the queue as part of the pub crawl group. Along the way, there will be free shots, drinks, access and wardrobe, and you will get special offers on drinks at the places you pass.

10. Beer tastings in Copenhagen

Denmark has some of the world’s best breweries. And I am not talking about Carlsberg, which, unfortunately, probably takes the prize for being the best-known Danish beer.

No, we have many exciting microbreweries, and the best-known in craft beer is probably Mikkeller.

Mikkeller has many bars around Copenhagen, and at several of these, you can go to beer tastings, where you can taste a variety of their best beers.

I’d recommend looking at places like Fermentoren, Warpigs, ÅBEN, People Like Us Nørrebro (my friend works here, so if you’re served by a guy called Mathias, say hi from Kris ), Himmeriget and BRUS for some fantastic craft beer in Copenhagen.

11. Walking Tour

If you are pushed for time and want to experience as much of the city as possible, a guided walking tour in Copenhagen is perfect.

The tour takes two hours, and along the way, you will pass as many of Copenhagen’s historical and cultural sights and buildings as possible.

In this way, you also avoid having to plan your trip around the city yourself. It has been taken care of for you, and you have a guide with you throughout the tour to explain and discuss the things and places you pass.

Along the way, you will pass by places such as Christiansborg, Amalienborg Castle, Strøget and Nyhavn.

If there are any of the places you would like to experience close by, you can always go back there yourself when the city walk is over.

The tour is the perfect starting point to form an overview of the city, which can be good to have during the rest of your stay in Copenhagen.

12. Food Tour

If you want to experience the best of Copenhagen’s food scene, you should go on a dedicated food tour with a guide who will take you past the city’s tastiest eateries.

There are several different tours, but a safe choice is CPH Foodtours. They have many years of experience and therefore know exactly how to organise the perfect food tour in Copenhagen.

On this food tour, you’ll start in Torvehallerne, which is Copenhagen’s best-known food market and past several places with everything from custard buns to smørrebrød (the famous Danish open-faced sandwiches), so if you want to experience the best Copenhagen’s culinary scene has to offer, it’s an excellent choice – and your guide will take you under their wing, so you get lots of exciting information.

13. Freetown Christiania

If there is one area that is a must to experience when you are in Copenhagen, it is, of course, Christiania.

The area has become Denmark’s answer and symbol of free spirit and, not least, freedom. At Christiania, creative and alternative initiatives and measures abound.

You will find, for example, venues, galleries, restaurants, cafes, workshops and a lot of other exciting and interesting places in the area. You will find many gift ideas and good craftsmanship in the small shops.

All kinds of people live in Christiania, but unfortunately, a small fraction helps to give Christiania a tarnished reputation in the media.

The area is much more than just Pusher Street. It is beautiful nature, happy people, music, colours, originality and ingenuity.

If you come to Copenhagen and have never been to Christiania, you should go out and experience it yourself.

14. The Meat Packing District (Kødbyen)

As the name suggests, the Meat Packing District – or Kødbyen in Danish – is Copenhagen’s old Meat Packing District, which 20-30 years ago was anything but a thing to do in Copenhagen.

However, a lot has happened, and Kødbyen in the Vesterbro area is now one of the trendiest places to visit a restaurant or bar.

I love the beer bars Warpigs and ÅBEN, while you can also eat everything from burgers at Tommis Burger Joint to pizza at Mother and seafood at Kødbyens Fiskebar.

A perfect place to stop by if you want to experience Copenhagen nightlife.

15. Copenhagen Zoo

Whether you are travelling to Copenhagen with children or not, it is also recommended to take a trip past Copenhagen Zoo, which, together with the parks and gardens in the city, acts as a breather from the rest of Copenhagen’s hustle and bustle.

You can easily spend many hours in the Zoo, so if you need something to do one day, it is an obvious destination.

The Zoo here is open every day all year round, so regardless of when you come to Copenhagen, you also have the opportunity to go to the Zoo.

In the garden, you can greet hundreds of animal species, such as the newly arrived pandas, polar bears, hippos, chimpanzees, sea lions, flamingos, and many more.

You will also find several eating places in the Zoo, where you can have a hearty lunch before heading out to see the other half of the garden.

The entrance is included with your Copenhagen Card.

16. Bakken (free amusement park)

There is another amusement park in the capital area in addition to Tivoli – called Bakken.

Bakken is a beautiful destination for a fun day trip for the whole family. Here, young and old can have a fun and experiential day speeding across the field.

You can easily take the S-train to Klampenborg St, which is a few hundred metres from the main entrance.

You will find many rides, restaurants, stalls, cafes and candy shops on Bakken. It costs nothing to enter, so if you don’t want to try the rides, you can quickly go to Bakken and enjoy the atmosphere and surroundings for free.

Otherwise, you can buy a tour pass if you dare to try the slides and carousels.

Bakken is open from April to September, and there is a sea of ​​events and activities you can choose to participate in every year.

17. National Aquarium of Denmark (Den Blå Planet)

The most visited attractions in Copenhagen are Tivoli, followed by Bakken and Copenhagen Zoo. Not far from these mastodons, which have existed for almost many years, we find a fascinating attraction which has only recently opened its doors.

I am talking about the National Aquarium of Denmark, which we call Den Blå Planet (The Blue Planet), and you will find it in Kastrup on Amager – easy to get to with the metro line towards the Airport.

Over 600,000 people visit Den Blå Planet, Northern Europe’s largest exhibition aquarium, every year. Here you and the family can meet and greet over 450 different species and nothing less than over 20,000 sea animals.

At Den Blå Planet, you can try everything from diving with sharks and getting up close to the mighty sea turtles, or how about going behind the scenes and getting a guided tour of the vast aquarium?

18. Copenhagen Street Food (Reffen)

If you want a different and exciting taste experience out of the ordinary, you should also stop by Reffen – Copenhagen Street Food.

It is nothing less than Northern Europe’s largest street food market, where food stalls from as many as 17 different nationalities are gathered with one purpose – to serve delicious new and exotic dishes to both the locals and the tourists in the city.

However, the reef is only open seasonally, so the area is closed during winter.

At Reffen, you are guaranteed to find something for every taste, and you can already look forward to sinking your teeth into the many tasty delicacies.

You will find everything from appetisers to main courses and desserts, and next to that, you will also find a large selection of drinks, including cocktails, wine, water and beer.

If you doubt where to enjoy dinner, you should head for Reffen. There are so many stalls and specialities that you can go there many evenings without trying it all.

19. Nyhavn

I have mentioned Nyhavn a few times in this article, but the harbour quarter also deserves a point of its own.

Hundreds of thousands of Danes and tourists drop by Nyhavn every year, and there is probably nothing more beautiful or charming than a warm sunny day in Nyhavn.

Whether you sit down at one of the many cafes or restaurants to enjoy a traditional Danish lunch or go for a walk along the water and soak up the good atmosphere, there is probably no cosier place in Copenhagen than Nyhavn.

For many years, the area has been one of the city’s iconic neighbourhoods. Although in the first many years, it housed taverns for the city’s many sailors, today it has taken on a much more positive appearance and now the image of Nyhavn is a much nicer and more peaceful one of a kind.

20. The National Museum

Between Tivoli and Christiansborg, you will find the National Museum, housed in the beautiful Prinsens Palæ, where it has been since its opening in 1849, as the Danish state took over the buildings.

If you want to get under the skin of Denmark’s entire history, the National Museum is the right place to visit. Here you can see treasures that are all significant relics from the shared Danish past.

A trip to the National Museum is the ideal thing to do in Copenhagen for the whole family, as even the smallest can join in.

Visit the National Museum and step directly into Danish and world history.

The museum also contains a café and a restaurant, where you can conveniently enjoy a cup of coffee or a meal on top of your museum visit.

21. Go to Malmö, Sweden

You can also kill two birds with one stone in Copenhagen and experience two countries on the same trip. Because Copenhagen is a short drive to Sweden, it is obvious to take a quick trip across the strait if you are in the capital.

For example, you can take a full-day trip across the Øresund Bridge from Copenhagen. On the trip, you will experience both Lund and Malmø, right on the other side of the water.

The trip lasts around six hours, and it is a unique opportunity to experience Swedish culture and history now that you are so close to our neighbouring country.

22. National Gallery of Denmark (SMK)

Here at the end of the guide to the best things to do in Copenhagen, we will also include a trip to the National Gallery of Denmark called Statens Museum for Kunst.

Close by; you will also find the Geological Museum and the State Museum of Natural History, which it is obvious to visit in the same vein.

The National Gallery, or SMK as it is also called, is Denmark’s leading art museum. Over a quarter of a million people come here every year. With the museum’s extensive and long-standing collection considered, it is not difficult to understand why it is so famous.

SMK has many Danish and international works of art, including works by artists like Rembrandt, Mantegna and Rubens. The museum’s collections span the last 700 years, so there is plenty to discover when you enter through the doors at SMK.

23. The Marble Church

One of Copenhagen’s most beautiful churches is between Nyhavn and The Little Mermaid. The church is called Frederiks Kirke but is known as the Marble Church – and that is also the name of the metro station (Marmorkirken) just below the church, so it is probably okay to call it that.

The church is from the 18th century, and the beautiful dome is the largest in Scandinavia.

You can come inside for services, and there are often concerts in the church.

24. Copenhill

Admittedly, it gets freezing in Copenhagen in the winter, so we could probably have a ski slope or a ski area as we know it in Sweden or Norway. The problem is that Copenhagen and the rest of Denmark are almost as flat as a pancake.

So what do you do?

You build a ski area on an old waste plant in the middle of Copenhagen – welcome to Copenhill.

I don’t ski, but I have been out on Copenhill several times, which is free if you want to experience the view of Copenhagen – and I can recommend it.

You can either hike to the top (it’s steep but only takes a few minutes) or take the lift up to the top, where the ski slope starts, but where there’s also a large viewing area and a bar.

To ski, you must buy a Ski Pass or a combined Pass with rental equipment.

25. Rundetårn (The Round Tower)

Rundetårn is, as the name suggests – it means The Round Tower in Danish, a round tower, and with its location right in the centre of Copenhagen, this is undoubtedly the best place to get a 360-degree rooftop view of the entire Danish capital.

Rundetårn is located in the city centre on one of the pedestrian streets, and I must admit that I think this is one of Copenhagen’s best things to do.

And it’s value for money – it only costs DKK 40 to get up to Rundetårn. But then you also have to walk all the way, so for those with walking difficulties and the elderly, it is not the best attraction.

The view from the top is magnificent. In the pictures here, I was up in the tower in December, right around sunset, and it was lovely!

I showed some English friends around Copenhagen, and they also loved Rundetårn, so foreign tourists approve it

You buy tickets at the entrance, but if you have purchased the Copenhagen Card, the Round Tower is also included – just like so many other attractions and experiences in Copenhagen.

26. Rosenborg Castle & The Crown Jewels

Yes, another castle! But this one’s in the city centre, so I recommend dropping by Rosenborg Castle.

Rosenborg Castle is an absolute gem! Tucked away in the city centre, this Renaissance beauty is brimming with history and charm. It’s like stepping back in time, with royal treasures and the exquisite Danish Crown Jewels on display.

And if that’s not enough, the surrounding King’s Garden is a tranquil haven, perfect for a stroll or a picnic.

27. Frederiksberg Gardens

Frederiksberg Gardens is my favourite park in Copenhagen and it might even be considered a bit of a hidden gem for most tourists.

This park is located a bit away from Copenhagen’s main attractions, so most tourists don’t consider it, but you can reach it by metro extremely quickly from Nørreport.

This is where locals will chill out in the summertime and where I go for a walk if I need to clear my head and be surrounded by beautiful nature.

So if you’re looking for a free thing to do in Copenhagen and you’ve already been to the main attractions in the city centre, I recommend going to Frederiksberg Gardens.

Next to the park are a couple of traditional Danish restaurants where you can get smørrebrød and other conventional Danish dishes.

28. The Tube Copenhagen

The Tube Copenhagen is a one-of-a-kind attraction within the Copenhagen Central Station, offering an escape into a realm crafted by eight ingenious artists.

In the overview, I have used the emoji ‘’ to show where we are in terms of price in the given place.

We’re starting with a genuine Copenhagen classic – of course, I can’t write a guide to Copenhagen’s best smørrebrød without mentioning Aamans.

1. Aamans 1921

Aamanns 1921 is a Danish restaurant with a strong focus on ecology and traditional Danish dishes, which can, however, have an international twist from time to time.

For lunch, you will find a selection of smørrebrød that do not have a Michelin star but are nevertheless mentioned in the Michelin guide, which must be said to be a massive pat on the back.

I include Aamann’s smørrebrød in the guide here, as I would recommend it to those of you who are looking for the city’s best smørrebrød and don’t care too much about what the bill ends up with.

Smørrebrød at Aamanns is indeed quite expensive, but the quality is also second to none.

So to sum it up: if you’re looking for the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen City Centre, then Aamanns 1921 is a good bet.

It is recommended to book a table, as this is a very popular restaurant in Copenhagen.

2. Café Halvvejen

Okay, so this is probably more of a personal preference for you looking for a cosy, classic Danish and cheap place to eat smørrebrød in Copenhagen.

Right opposite the Synagogue in the heart of Copenhagen, we find Café Halvvejen, which serves traditional Danish dishes in cosy surroundings.

Here you will be served three pieces of smørrebrød for only DKK 89. A definite find at that price in the centre of Copenhagen.

This is probably the cheapest smørrebrød restaurant in Copenhagen City Centre.

In addition, large draft beers are served for only 35 Danish Kroner, and even the fantastic Albani beers, Odense Pilsner and Classic, are on tap.

I know the place from when I had an office just around the corner and often ended up at Halvvejen for lunch, so I have eaten here several times.

The food is quite good, but it is, after all, a cheap place, so if you are looking for the ultimate culinary experience, I recommend one of the other places to eat on the list here.

It would be best if you visited Café Halvvejen for the excellent atmosphere, the unpretentious service and the reasonable price.

This is not the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen, but it’s a hidden gem where you’ll be sure to meet the locals.

3. Norrlyst (smørrebrød with a twist)

If you’re up for trying something a bit different, I can highly recommend Norrlyst, which serves modern, gourmet smørrebrød.

I visited the restaurant in the heart of the city centre, where we opted for their lunch menu with two pieces of smørrebrød of our choice and a dessert, where we could choose between Danish cheeses and ice cream.

It was a splendid experience and I think that ‘gourmet open sandwich‘ is the perfect description.

We wanted to try something a bit unconventional and received some excellent recommendations from the very friendly waiter, so here I also got my first taste of a tartar open sandwich

I was also quite impressed with the decor at Norrlyst, which was super cosy and I thought to myself that it is a place I would without a doubt bring my foreign friends to.

The lunch menu costs 285 DKK, which I think is incredibly fair considering the quality, and with the location in the heart of Copenhagen, there is really nothing to complain about.

So a big recommendation for Norrlyst from me – especially for those who are keen to try a different twist on our beloved smørrebrød.

4. Aamanns Genbo

In Carlsberg Byen next to Vesterbro, a lot of exciting things are happening these years.

I therefore passed by Aamanns Genbo here in November 2022 to try the new restaurant Aamanns Genbo.

If the name tells you anything, then it is true that Aamanns was also number 1 on the list of the best smørrebrød places in Copenhagen – now the “chain” has opened a restaurant in Carlsberg Byen, which is significantly cheaper and has a different atmosphere than the traditional restaurant in Indre By.

I had a friend from the UK with me, and we agreed that Aamann’s Genbo is taken from a home magazine that should try to show what the Scandinavian style looks like.

Even the toilets are impressive and beautiful in this trendy, Scandinavian style

The food was also impressive, and we are close to saying that it is some of the best smørrebrød I have had.

A piece costs from DKK 90, which I think is a really fair price.

The waiters were super nice and there is generally a really good atmosphere at Aamanns Genbo, so I think it will be a huge success for them with this Scandinavian gem in Carlsberg Byen.

A bit of a hidden gem at the moment as Carlsberg Byen (the Carlsberg City) is an up-and-coming area of Copenhagen.

It’s a bit hard to find, so load up Google Maps on your phone!

5. Restaurant Schønnemann

Then we take a step up the quality path again and enter Restaurant Schønnemann, a few hundred meters from Nørreport Station in Central Copenhagen.

Danish luxury smørrebrød has been served here since 1877, so this is a proper Copenhagen institution.

The price range is more ala Aamanns than Halvvejen, but the quality and taste should also be similar. You can get a taste of the dishes in their online food menu here.

Schønnemann is often mentioned when the conversation turns to the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen. It is thus again a good idea to book a table for lunch at the restaurant – it is popular.

An excellent choice if you are looking for an outstanding Danish lunch in the centre of Copenhagen.

6. Tivolihallen

Then we have to get closer to Tivoli Gardens, where we find the cosy basement restaurant diagonally opposite the legendary Rio Bravo (which you could drop by as well, but they’re best known for their roast pork “stegt flæsk” ad libitum), Tivolihallen.

Tivolihallen is a good choice for you who are looking for a middle ground between Schønnemann and Café Halvvejen:

• the price is not too bad
• the service is friendly with a classic Danish twinkle in the eye
• the smørrebrød is of really high quality
• In addition to smørrebrød, Tivolihallen also serves hearty dishes, where their speciality boiled clipfish is a popular dish in the small restaurant.

As the name suggests, the place is close to Tivoli Gardens in Indre By (the city centre), so it is an excellent place to stop by when you have been sightseeing in Copenhagen.

Tivolihallen is, among other things, included in the book “1001 Restaurants You Must Experience Before You Die”, which only mentions three other Danish restaurants.

Smørrebrød costs from DKK 84, and a classic Danish, hearty dish such as roasted pork (kind of like pork belly – flæskesteg, my favourite) with red cabbage and cucumber salad costs just DKK 104.

All in all, an excellent Danish restaurant in Copenhagen, where you can get smørrebrød in cosy surroundings.

7. Husmanns Vinstue

In this guide to the best smørrebrød in Copenhagen, we will stay in the city centre for the time being.

I’m not doing this on purpose, as I love the bridge districts (Nørrebro and Vesterbro).

Still, the truth is that many of the city’s best lunch restaurants are located in the centre for good reasons: this is where the tourists come, and many of the eateries have been here for nearly 150 years.

Husmanns Vinstue is also a traditional restaurant that was founded in 1888 and continues to serve smørrebrød in the trendy Larsbjørnsstræde.

The prices are again affordable, with smørrebrød starting at DKK 76 for a spiced herring with curry salad and onion, which is the cheapest item on the menu.

Husmanns Vinstue also works in companies and has, among other things, a dedicated men’s lunch menu that can satisfy even the hungriest groups of men on an excursion.

The place currently has a rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars on Google, which says something about the quality and price being linked here.

A really good choice of smørrebrød restaurant in cosy, traditional premises in the middle of the capital.

Then we put on our walking shoes and stroll towards Nyhavn, but we quickly and elegantly skip the tourist traps in Nyhavn itself.

We are heading towards Restaurant Palægade, where the price range leaps, but now we have also come to the expensive part of Indre By, so it goes without saying.

However, it is not the case that smørrebrød at Restaurant Palægade is too expensive. For instance, the cheapest piece of smørrebrød (curried herring with egg and cress) costs DKK 110.

This restaurant is excellent if you want a slightly finer restaurant in Copenhagen to try smørrebrød.

At Palægade, they strive to build a bridge between tradition and innovation, which is why their menu is also unique.

On the rating front, the restaurant got a whopping 4.9 out of 5 stars on Facebook and was voted the city’s best lunch restaurant in 2021.

9. Hallernes Smørrebrød

I thought Hallernes Smørrebrød only existed in Torvehallerne, but in my research for this guide to Copenhagen’s best smørrebrød, I found out that they are also behind the places in Magasin and Tivoli Food Hall.

I once took my friend from Liverpool to Hallernes Smørrebrød in Torvehallerne, where he raved about both the one with chicken salad and liver pâté.

So the place is approved by the local (me) and the tourist

The only drawback is that it is not a restaurant, so in winter when you cannot sit outside at Torvehallerne, it might work best as a takeaway.

On the other hand, I can remember the place in Magasin du Nord (a famous high-end mall), where seats are pretty cosy.

The food area is on the top floor of Magasin.

You can enjoy a beautiful view of the entire Tivoli from the lovely rooftop pool. At Nimb Hotel, you’ll stay in the heart of Copenhagen with easy access to all the attractions, nightlife, shopping, and restaurants.

The hotel offers a fine selection of luxury rooms and apartments.

This is reflected in their size and choice of interior. If you’re looking for an all-around pampering experience, Nimb Hotel is an excellent choice, and you can even bring your pet along in selected rooms.

There are five restaurants at the hotel, as well as fitness and spa facilities. There’s also an outdoor pool, which is only open during the season.

Close to Langelinie and The Little Mermaid is Adina Apartment Hotel Copenhagen, which offers spacious luxury hotel apartments, bright and inviting common areas, and an indoor pool.

All apartments are furnished to be comfortable for both shorter and longer stays.

This means, among other things, that there’s an oven, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, and washing machine in the apartments, which also offer premium bed linen and complimentary toiletries – and some apartments have bathtubs.

The pool at Tivoli Hotel is indoors, with plenty of space for a good swim.

Overall, something has been done with the common areas, which include several lobbies, lounge areas, bars, four restaurants, terraces, a courtyard, fitness facilities, a children’s playroom, a lounge, and meeting facilities.

All rooms are stylishly furnished, with a focus on good quality. There’s a fine selection of standard double rooms, suites, executive double rooms, and family rooms, and breakfast is available to purchase.

6. Charlottehaven – indoor pool

On Østerbro, you’ll find the acclaimed Charlottehaven hotel, which offers highly spacious holiday apartments made with light and natural materials.

As one of the few hotels in Copenhagen with a pool, you can even bring your pet here.

Not only is there plenty of space to roam around but both the apartments and the hotel in general offer all the comforts you need.

• The apartments have an oven, dishwasher, and balcony, among other things.

In addition, you can enjoy a large indoor pool, cosy terraces, farm environments, a large outdoor play area for children, and fitness facilities with a short elevator ride.

The apartments are spread across two different locations and concepts; The Garden, which offers cosy and comfortable (family) apartments, and The Tower, which offers luxury apartments with 180-degree views and furniture in Danish design.

If you don’t need excessive luxury but want a decent hotel to stay in while you’re in Copenhagen, Park Inn by Radisson Copenhagen Airport is a good choice, especially if you plan to fly to or from CPH Airport before or after your stay.

The hotel offers standard rooms with classic decor and soundproofing, a large indoor pool area, and a fitness centre. Buying breakfast in the restaurant is also possible, and the hotel is pet-friendly.

The prices are very affordable. The hotel is in Amager, just a 5-minute drive from the airport.

You can easily visit Amager Strandpark (the best beach in Copenhagen) and Den Blå Planet, less than 5 minute’s drive from the hotel. It’s also only a 15-minute drive to the centre of Copenhagen.

Park Inn by Radisson Copenhagen Airport is an excellent opportunity to stay inexpensively and conveniently within a short distance of everything Denmark’s capital offers regarding attractions, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife.

• However, you’ll need to take the metro for 10 minutes to Christianshavn or Kongens Nytorv before you’re in the city’s heart.

Now, those were the best pool hotels in Copenhagen – and before I go on to a luxury hostel with a pool – I will mention another great option. This requires that you either rent a car (which we call “billeje” in Danish”) or take the train about 50 minutes North to Elsinore.

In Elsinore, you’ll find one of the best spa hotels in Denmark, the Marienlyst Strandhotel. I know this is not a pool hotel in Copenhagen, but it’s quite close and worth the trip if you’ve got a couple of days to spend in Denmark.

8. Steel House Copenhagen – luxury hostel with indoor pool

Although Steel House Copenhagen is not technically a hotel but a luxury hostel, it should still be on the list. This hostel differs from a classic hostel as it’s a significantly upgraded version. Something unique about this hostel is that it’s only for adults. There’s no focus on parties but rather on a comfortable stay with all the necessary amenities, including good opportunities to work remotely.

The location and view are also great, with a short distance to Copenhagen’s city life, shopping opportunities, places to eat, and all the city’s sights can be easily reached by public transport or bicycle.

I’m Danish and live in Copenhagen, so I often go to and from this airport.

Let’s get started with the guide and I’ll tell you how to get from the airport to the city centre in just 13 minutes.

Copenhagen Airport (CPH)

Copenhagen Airport, or Kastrup Airport as it’s called in Danish, is the main international gateway to Denmark and one of the busiest airports in Northern Europe.

Located just 8 kilometres southeast of the city centre, the airport is convenient for travellers visiting Copenhagen.

In my opinion, it’s one of the best airports in Europe.

My only bad note on CPH is that the F-gates (where low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and EasyJet operate) are a good 15-minute walk from security.

So if you’re flying out of Copenhagen with Ryanair or Easyjet, I’d recommend getting to the airport earlier than you’d typically do.

Apart from the F-gates, CPH is lovely, and there are some high-quality restaurants and bars – there’s even a Mikkeller craft beer bar.

Metro – best way to get to the city centre

Arguably one of the most convenient ways to get to the city centre, the metro is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, offering a reliable round-the-clock service.

The M2 line will transport you directly from the airport to Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport, both central locations in the city centre.

Trains depart every 2 minutes during the day, and every 15-20 minutes at night, so you’ll never have to wait long.

The journey from CPH Airport to Kongens Nytorv takes approximately 13 minutes, making this a speedy option for those eager to start exploring the city.

You can walk to your city centre hotel from both Kongens Nytorv and Nørreport – if you haven’t yet booked your place to stay, check out my huge guide on where to stay in Copenhagen.

At Kongens Nytorv, you could also change to the M3-line and quickly access all other areas of Copenhagen.

If you’re staying near Copenhagen Central Station, then the next option is slightly better.

Train – best way to get to Copenhagen Central Station

Consider taking the train if you prefer a slightly larger vehicle or wish to enjoy a bit of Danish scenery.

Direct trains run from the airport to Copenhagen Central Station every 10-20 minutes during the day, offering a journey time around 13 minutes.

Both the metro and the train station are located right next to the arrival hall at the airport.

You can get train times at the Danish Journey Planner website or Google Maps.

There are plenty of cheap hostels and hotels near the Central Station in Copenhagen.

Ticket prices

You can get tickets from the DSB ticket sales booth and ticket machines in the arrivals area, making this a highly convenient option.

The price to get from Copenhagen Airport to the city centre is 30 kroner no matter what mode of transport you’re taking.

• 30 kroner is around €4.04 / $2.75/ £3.47

You’ll need a 3-zone ticket, but if you use the ticket machine as I show in my video, then it will automatically work it out for you.

You could also get the Copenhagen Card and have free access to the train and metro.

It’s worth noting that while buses are an option, they are not recommended due to their long journey times and less frequent service compared to the metro and train.

Taxi – slowest and most expensive way to get to the city

Taxis are available from ranks outside the airport, offering a more private travel option.

They provide door-to-door service, which can be especially useful if you travel with a lot of luggage or prefer not to navigate public transport.

However, be aware that taxis are more expensive than public transportation.

While it’s possible to pre-book taxis, it’s generally unnecessary as taxis are readily available at the airport.

The journey time to the city centre by taxi can vary significantly depending on traffic, but expect it to take 20 to 40 minutes.

Taxi prices

A taxi from Copenhagen Airport to the city centre will cost 350-500 kroner. All taxis in Denmark are metered so they can’t cheat you.

You can pay by cash, card and contactless (Apple Pay etc).

Car Rentals in CPH Airport

If you prefer a more independent mode of travel, renting a car may be the perfect option. Copenhagen Airport hosts several international car rental companies, ensuring you have a broad selection of vehicles. 

These companies include well-known names such as Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Budget, and Sixt, each offering a range of vehicles to cater to varying needs and budgets.

You will need a valid driver’s license, passport, and credit card to rent a car. 

Booking your car in advance, particularly during peak tourist season, is highly recommended to ensure availability and potentially secure better rates. 

Driving in Copenhagen

Driving in Copenhagen is generally straightforward, with well-maintained roads and clear signage. However, like any city, it can get busy during peak hours, and finding parking in the city centre can sometimes take work. 

If you are not used to driving in European cities, be aware that Copenhagen has a lot of cyclists, and special attention is needed to the dedicated bike lanes.

1. Copenhagen Downtown Hostel – best located hostel in the city centre

Location: Inner City (Indre By, the city centre)

Right in the heart of Copenhagen, only 1 minute walk from Town Hall Square, close to Tivoli Gardens and Nyhavn, is Copenhagen Downtown Hostel.

With its 85 rooms spread over several floors, it is a relatively large hostel with room for many travellers.

You can choose between private rooms with 2-8 beds and a private bathroom and then capsules for one person and larger public dormitories with room for 4-12 people – either mixed or for women only.

Whether you are travelling alone and prefer peace at night, whether you are travelling in a group, or would like to meet other travellers, there are options at this hostel that suit your wishes.

There is nothing to say about the fact that Copenhagen Downtown Hostel has previously been voted Copenhagen’s most popular hostel because there are plenty of shared facilities such as a bar, karaoke, billiards and bicycle rental – and it is possible to buy breakfast, coffee and snacks on site.

2. Urban Camper Hostel – coolest hostel in Copenhagen?

Location: Nørrebro

Urban Camper Hostel is created by travellers for travellers. It is a mix of a hostel and city camping (not to be confused with glamping), and the focus is on having fun and meeting new people.

Included in the price of all overnight stays are bed linen and towels, complimentary breakfast and free Wi-Fi. Emphasis has been placed on comfort when you camp indoors in the large tents at Urban Camper Hostel.

The tents are distributed over private rooms with 2-4 beds and shared dormitories with four beds – either mixed or only for women.

This hostel is located in Nørrebro, with only 4 km to Tivoli and 4 km to Nyhavn. It is possible to rent bicycles on-site to get around to Copenhagen’s best things to do quickly.

Like public transport, it is super easy to reach – there are plenty of buses, S-trains and metro from Nørrebro Station, 1 minute’s walk from the place.

If you need to wash your clothes, there are also laundry facilities at Urban Camper Hostel.

3. Danhostel Copenhagen City – best hostel in Copenhagen for families and groups

Location: Inner City (city centre)

Not many hostels can boast of being 5-star, but Danhostel Copenhagen City can.

Here, hostel life is taken to the next level. Of course, the price comes with it, and it is not a cheap solution, but on the other hand, it is a comfortable and slightly luxurious choice – and the view is phenomenal.

This is the right solution if you want to travel and meet new people – with a little extra comfort. It is more reminiscent of a nice hotel with dormitories. However, private rooms and apartments of various sizes are also available.

It is possible to buy breakfast, and there is a restaurant, communal kitchen and laundry on-site, just as there is plenty of entertainment in the form of billiards, table football and board games – as well as free Wi-Fi.

4. Next House Copenhagen – modern hostel in the city centre

Location: City Centre / Waterfront

Located in the middle of Copenhagen with less than 10 minute’s walk to Tivoli Gardens – and a little further to Nyhavn – you will find Next House Copenhagen, which calls itself a “next level hostel“, as the comfort and facilities have been turned up a notch.

With a good mix of double rooms and shared dormitories with 4-6 beds, you can spend the night with privacy or the opportunity to meet other travellers – and there are usually plenty of them with as many as 433 rooms, 4 bars, restaurant with a pizza buffet, fitness centre with options for yoga and even cinema.

There is an option to buy a breakfast buffet in the restaurant, and then there is free Wi-Fi and nice communal areas for relaxing or working on the go.

This is one of the newer hostels in Copenhagen and undoubtedly one of the nicest.

5. Steel House Copenhagen – hostel with swimming pool

Location: Vesterbro

Like Next House, Steel House is also a more luxurious hostel where you get lots of excellent facilities.

This hostel is particularly suitable for those who want to hang out with other travellers in superb surroundings – or who are digital nomads and wish to have proper working conditions during the journey.

Tivoli Gardens is only 500 metres away, so the location is perfect, and there is free Wi-Fi, kitchen facilities, a snack bar, gym, games room, TV room, laundry, cinema and even an indoor pool.

Here you get a lot for your money – and the opportunity to meet travellers from all over the world.

Despite the many excellent facilities, the prices at these luxury hostels are pretty reasonable – for Copenhagen, at least.

And with only a 2-minute walk to Vesterbro Station and the option of renting a bike, it’s also easy to get around.

6. Globalhagen Hostel – stay in one of the coolest areas of Copenhagen

Location: Nørrebro

Globalhagen Hostel is a cheap hostel in Nørrebro that is mainly run by volunteers – which is also the case for Café Mellemrummet, located just below Globalhagen.

The hostel is mainly for travellers who want to meet other travellers and exchange experiences and ideas. If you’re staying at this hostel, you can be sure to meet other artists and musicians.

The location is certainly not wrong, with 2 km to Tivoli Gardens and 2 km to Nyhavn, respectively, and both public transport and bike hire are easily accessible.

There are 22 rooms, so it is a small hostel, and the rooms are spread over dormitories, private rooms and family rooms.

There is free wifi, laundry, a cinema room and kitchen facilities, and then there is the option of buying breakfast or going to the bar for drinks and snacks. Events and arrangements are also held regularly.

This hostel is close to Nørrebro Bryghus, one of the best places for a beer in Copenhagen.

7. Sleep in Heaven – stay close to all the action in Nørrebro

Location: Nørrebro

For young and party-loving travellers, Sleep in Heaven is the obvious hostel.

Here you get the option of cheap accommodation, happy hour every day, billiards, access to free wifi and computers – and bed linen is included in the price.

There is no more than 2 km to the Town Hall Square and Tivoli Gardens, good public transport connections, and easy access to rental bicycles.

It is, therefore, a nice place to experience everything that Copenhagen and Nørrebro have to offer – and previous guests are pleased about all the social activities that take place among the travellers.

It is somewhat reminiscent of a lively dormitory with small nooks and excellent common facilities, where the primary focus is meeting new people. It is possible to purchase breakfast on-site.

I recently had a visit from a friend from Canada who stayed at this hostel, and he was thrilled with the place.

8. Urban House Copenhagen – top hostel close to the Central Station

Location: Vesterbro

Centrally located in Copenhagen – just 2 minutes from the Central Station – you will find Urban House Copenhagen, which offers private rooms and dormitories where linen and towels are included at a very affordable price.

I stayed here once when I didn’t have an apartment in Copenhagen, and I recommend it.

I had a private room, so it just functioned as a good hotel in the centre of Copenhagen, where the bar at the reception was lively.

At Urban House in Copenhagen, the focus is on a good atmosphere and social interaction. There is, among other things, a bar, billiards lounge, TV room and courtyard, and there are regular joint running and cycling trips and yoga classes.

In addition to being located right in the heart of Copenhagen, where there is plenty to experience, the hostel also offers plenty of entertainment.

You can easily walk over to the Meat Packing District (Kødbyen), which with its many bars and restaurants, is always a good choice for a night out in Copenhagen.

On-site, there is a laundry room, shared kitchen, restaurant, snack bar and the option to buy breakfast.

9. a&o Copenhagen Sydhavn – cheap but not centrally located

Location: Sydhavn

Sydhavn (the south harbour) has a new a&o hostel.

This is particularly suitable for travelling business people and digital nomads who need a shared workplace with free Wi-Fi – who prefer the cheap and social solution of a dormitory or a private room to retreat to.

There is a bar where you can buy snacks and drinks and purchase breakfast if needed.

On a map, a&o Copenhagen Sydhavn is located relatively close to Vesterbro and the city centre.

Still, I want to mention that the place is in a dead area, with only one gas station and not much else in the immediate area.

Therefore, you must be prepared to go to Sydhavn Station, take the suburban train a few stops to Copenhagen Central Station, or take the bus towards the centre or Vesterbro.

So there are hostels in Copenhagen with better locations, but for those who are just looking for an incredibly cheap place to spend the night and don’t need to live right in the centre, this is a good choice for overnight stays in Copenhagen.

Warning: you need to know this about a&o Copenhagen Nørrebro

Location: Nørrebro

This hostel is particularly suitable for travelling students, as there is a “students’ corner”, a library and free Wi-Fi. There is the option of shared or private rooms and purchasing breakfast and a packed lunch.

However, I must say that the a&o hostel in Nørrebro does not have a particularly child-friendly location.

The place is in Mjølnerparken, which for 10-20 years has been home to one of Copenhagen’s most violent gangs and in general, the area just outside this hostel can feel unsafe in the evening.

There has even been a shooting that took place at the hostel shortly after it opened.

I have lived in the area and was honestly surprised when I saw that a hostel was being built on the premises and I thought I would be very sorry if I mistakenly booked a similar place in a city for a trip abroad.

I don’t want to scare anybody off coming to Copenhagen – as I said, I used to live quite close to Mjølnerparken, and 99.9% will not experience anything terrible.

I’d feel bad writing a guide to the best hostels in Copenhagen and not mentioning some of those in (kind of) bad neighbourhoods.

There are many other good hostels in Copenhagen, so unless you are okay with staying in a slightly rough area, I would not recommend a&o Copenhagen Nørrebro.

In this guide, I’ll share the 10 best places to stay in Aarhus – in different price ranges, so there’s a hotel for those looking for luxury and those travelling to Aarhus on a budget.

Aarhus is the largest city in Jutland and has a lot to offer. You must not miss ARoS, The Old Town Museum, Marselisborg, Musikhuset Aarhus and Dokk1, but this is only a small sample of what Aarhus offers.

Although it is Denmark’s second-largest city (after the capital Copenhagen, of course), Aarhus is a relatively small city. Usually, when I write these “where to stay in a big city” guides, I typically write about quite a few different areas.

In this guide on the best places to stay in Aarhus, I mainly include hotels in Aarhus C – the city centre. A few of the hotels are slightly outside the centre, but I will write why you should choose this hotel – for instance, it might have a nice swimming pool or free parking.

Where to stay in Aarhus? Here are the 10 best places.

1. Hotel Villa Provence – stay here for luxury in the city centre

• Location: Aarhus C
• Number of stars: ****

Nice 4-star hotel in the heart of Aarhus right next to Dokk1. The hotel gets excellent reviews, and there is nothing to say about that. It is not just the top-notch location but also the charming rooms, delicious facilities, good service and good food.

The hotel is inspired by the Mediterranean countries, which can be seen both in the authentic and charming rooms and on the food menu. You get free breakfast with all stays and a free cup of coffee to go on departure.

The cosy hotel has just 39 rooms, ranging from single and double rooms to large suites with bathtubs. Regardless of finances and needs, you will find a suitable room for your stay in Aarhus.

2. Radisson RED Aarhus – best trendy hotel

• Location: Aarhus C
• Number of stars: ****

Radisson RED Aarhus is the stylish and hip place to stay in Aarhus. It is well located concerning all the best things to do in Aarhus with a short distance to, among other things, ARoS, the Musikhuset and the main shopping area in the city centre. 

The hotel is a chapter of its own in terms of design, with many modern solutions.

The hotel offers app-controlled room service, a 24-hour gym, restaurant, and lounge, the option to purchase breakfast and free Wi-Fi.

There are over 78 rooms of various sizes and furnishings, all extremely spacious. A standard double room is a whopping 27 m2 and has a king-size bed, so there is plenty of elbow room.

3. Comwell Aarhus Dolce by Wyndham – best luxury hotel in Aarhus

Comwell is a brand known for their luxury hotels spread across Denmark, and the hotel in Aarhus is no exception.

Here you get large, spacious rooms with a nice interior and a view of the city, free breakfast and a wide range of facilities such as a 24-hour gym, restaurant and bar and good work opportunities if you need to get some work done on your trip to Aarhus.

The hotel is large, with 240 rooms spread over single and double rooms with plenty of space. The rooms have large, comfortable beds and a work desk, and the double rooms also have a dining area.

It is possible to rent bicycles at the hotel, and you can also get help with walking and cycling routes and the sights you just need to experience when you are in the city.

4. Hotel GUESTapart – apartment hotel in Aarhus

Hotel GUESTapart is one of the best-reviewed hotels in Aarhus. It is an apartment hotel with 86 apartments and many facilities such as a fitness centre, sauna, bar, restaurant, and meeting and work rooms.

The rooms are spread over different sizes of studio apartments from 30 to 47 m2. There is plenty of space for shorter and longer stays – and you get your own kitchen and bathroom. And breakfast is included in most stays.

Contrary to many other apartment hotels, the equipment has not been compromised at GUESTapart. Here, every apartment has a fridge, freezer, oven and dishwasher – and then there is a good double bed with the possibility of a cubicle from the rest of the apartment.

5. Helnan Marselis Hotel – beautiful hotel with pool in Aarhus

• Location: Marselisborg
• Number of stars: ****

Helnan Marselis Hotel is located in the south of Aarhus by Marselisborg; out to the water and close to the forest. Here you stay in a hotel close to all of Aarhus’ attractions but in an area with stunning nature.

In addition to excellent sea views, the hotel offers a wide range of facilities, including free breakfast, an indoor pool, a sauna, fitness facilities and a bar. In addition, the hotel is well suited for walking and cycling trips in the area, and bicycles can bed rented.

The rooms are spread over various double rooms and suites. Some have a view of the forest, others of the sea, and most have a terrace or balcony.

6. Milling Hotel Ritz – a city-centre hotel at a good price

Right in the middle of Aarhus, the Milling Hotel Ritz is located in a historic, well-preserved building. Here you will find smaller, classically furnished hotel rooms for a good price. There is easy access to transport and only a short trip to ARoS, Tivoli Friheden and Dokk1.

Restaurant MASH is just around the corner, and it is also possible to use the fitness centre in the immediate vicinity for a small fee.

On the other hand, breakfast is always free, just as free fruit, snacks, tea and hot chocolate are available all day in the lobby area.

The rooms are spread over single and double rooms in different standards, where Economy and Standard can often be booked at a good price, while Comfort offers large, comfortable beds.

7. Hotel Atlantic – stay by the harbour in Aarhus

• Location: Aarhus C
• Number of stars: ***

Right on the harbour quay near Dokk1, Hotel Atlantic has a beautiful view of the harbour on one side and the city centre of Aarhus on the other. Here you get a selection of smaller single or double rooms in the standard or superior category, which largely depends on the desired view.

The rooms have a bathroom with a bathtub, good king-size beds, free Wi-Fi – and free breakfast is included. There aren’t a ton of amenities, but the basics are fine; the internet is fast, the breakfast is delicious and the beds are comfortable.

There is a bar and snack bar at the hotel, and there is also the option of car hire – dogs are allowed, and you get free coffee and tea in the rooms. In addition, the hotel’s location is eminent for exploring Aarhus.

8. Zleep Hotel – hotel with free parking in Aarhus (close to the motorway)

• Location: Viby
• Number of stars: ***

In the southern part of Aarhus you will find Zleep Hotel Aarhus Viby, which offers simple double and family rooms at a good price. There aren’t a lot of fancy facilities, but there’s basically everything you need if you’re in the area to explore Aarhus.

Free parking at the hotel is a big plus, as parking in Aarhus can be expensive. You can park your car and take public transport to the centre. It doesn’t take more than 10 minutes. Bicycle rental is also available.

There are restaurants in the immediate area, but not in the hotel itself. Here, however, you can buy breakfast as well.

I would only recommend this hotel if you’re driving to Aarhus, as the free parking is the main attraction here.

9. Cabinn Aarhus – cheapest hotel in the city centre

• Location: Aarhus C
• Number of stars: **

The Cabinn hotels are strategically located around Denmark with good locations and low prices, which is also the case for the hotel in Aarhus. Here you can stay for cheap in small, stylish rooms. The Economy rooms, in particular, are cheap to stay in.

Despite the low price, the location is top – the hotel is right in the city centre.

The hotel has a restaurant, bar, library, free Wi-Fi and the option to buy breakfast. There is an electric kettle, tea and coffee in all rooms – and there are as many as 400.

If you are travelling as a family, it is possible to book connecting rooms so you can enjoy two rooms with a door between them.

I stayed in this hotel when I was in Aarhus for the Northside Festival and for that it’s perfect: you get a cheap place to sleep in the city centre, but if you’re looking for a more luxurious experience then you might want to look elsewhere.

10. Wakeup Aarhus – cheap place to stay right next to the station

Wakeup Copenhagen’s counterpart in Jutland, Wakeup Aarhus, is only a stone’s throw from Bruuns Galleri shopping mall. The concept is the same; a modern low-cost hotel with a central location and breakfast included – without that many other facilities.

The idea works and is popular. Especially for those who just need a place to sleep. The rooms and bathrooms are small, but they can easily work for an overnight stay.

The hotel has, among other things, a laundry service and computer stations. It is, therefore, also an excellent place to stay as a traveller – especially given the location and location.
