Lanzarote is a fantastic destination where you can experience the most beautiful landscapes and beautiful beaches. The island is geared towards tourism, so it is a very easy place to go on holiday.

I have been to Lanzarote several times in the winter, and I must admit that I love the island.

I’m also a big fan of Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, but I really liked Lanzarote on my last trip there.

For a first visit, I would start with Puerto del Carmen for beaches and restaurants within reach. Compare Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca for a resort holiday with children, or Punta Mujeres if you prefer a small village and a self-catering stay.

Whether you want a child-friendly beach holiday in a popular holiday town or stay in a slightly more unknown part of the island, there is a place in Lanzarote for you.

For a winter trip, check whether the pool you will actually use is heated and what your board package includes. For any season, compare the walk to the beach and restaurants: a hotel described as being in the resort can still be well outside its centre.

Best areas in Lanzarote

If you just want a quick overview, here are the best areas to stay in Lanzarote:

1. Puerto del Carmen – best all-round holiday area

Puerto del Carmen is the best place to stay in Lanzarote for travellers looking for a classic holiday town with good beaches, a good selection of hotels in different price ranges and plenty of restaurants and bars.

I stayed here on my last trip to Lanzarote and was surprisingly happy with the area.

The city is very similar to a classic European tourist area, packed with Irish pubs, Spanish and international restaurants, and lots of small shops.

But if you scratch the surface a little, you can also find really good restaurants with local charm.

The large Playa Grande is a surprisingly good sandy beach. Since the water is relatively shallow, it is also very child-friendly. Along the seafront, you will find plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars.

If you go further into the city, you can go to the old town, where I also spent a lot of time.

Here, we find, among other things, the somewhat smaller, very cosy Playa Chica – a little hidden gem where many locals enjoy the cosy surroundings and swim.

The old town’s harbour is also an excellent place to enjoy a cold drink, and I recommend following the sea to the west, where you can walk along a path to the neighbouring town of Puerto Calero.

Overall, Puerto del Carmen is the best all-around holiday area in Lanzarote if you’re looking for a great place to stay. There are lots of things within walking distance and several good beaches.

Lanzarote Airport is also only a 10-15 minute drive from Puerto del Carmen, so it’s easy to get straight from the plane to the beach.

In Puerto del Carmen I can, among other things, recommend:

• La Cascada – excellent restaurant with fantastic meat dishes
• El Laurel – cosy little tapas bar with cheap dishes close to Playa Chica
• Restaurante Go Chow Mein – really good Asian restaurant with nice waiters
• Long Beach Club Lanzarote – a beach bar that is elevated above the beach, so you have a great view of the city’s large beach

Places to stay in Puerto del Carmen

There’s a wide selection of hotels in Puerto del Carmen, but here are a few of my favourites.

Hotel Fariones is a five-star hotel on the seafront in Puerto del Carmen, with gardens and direct beach access. It is worth comparing if you want a luxury stay close to both the beach and the town’s restaurants.

You’ll stay in elegant rooms with modern decor and stunning sea views.

The hotel is close to local restaurants and shops, making it perfect if you’re looking for relaxation and easy access to the town’s amenities.

The main infinity pool is a strong reason to consider Fariones. If the rooftop pool is what caught your eye in the photos, check access for your chosen room category before booking rather than assuming every facility is included.

Gloria Izaro Club Hotel is a 4-star hotel a little outside the old town of Puerto del Carmen. I stayed here at Christmas 2023 and was actually really pleased with it.

I had all-inclusive, which can always be a bit hit-and-miss when it comes to the food, but I actually thought the food was quite excellent here at the hotel.

The room was like a small apartment with a large terrace, there’s a large pool area, and overall it was just a really good place to stay – at a reasonable price.

Cactus Apartments is an apartment complex on Calle Barqueta in Puerto del Carmen. It is worth comparing for a self-catering stay with a pool, rather than expecting the services of a full resort hotel.

A Booking.com guest describes Cactus as a “Beautiful, quiet apartment complex, well maintained & cleaned, with great air-con.” Check the apartment type, kitchen facilities and route back from the seafront before choosing.

It’s located near local attractions and eateries, making it a great base for exploring Lanzarote.

There’s also a lovely pool where you can relax after a day of sightseeing.

2. Costa Teguise – best area to stay for families with children

Costa Teguise is worth comparing for a family holiday because of its resort hotels, beaches and choice of places to eat. Pick a property around the beach and facilities you will use most, rather than assuming every part of town offers the same walkable stay.

The town is known for its family-friendly facilities and atmosphere, making it a favourite among travellers with children.

There are several good hotels with child-friendly pools and activities, and most restaurants have children’s menus that cater to even the pickiest eaters.

Playa de las Cucharas is Costa Teguise’s main beach and a popular windsurfing spot. Wind and water conditions vary, so it should not be described as reliably calm for children’s swimming.

For beach days with children, compare the coves and their conditions on the day, follow the flags and lifeguard advice, and keep hotel pool facilities in mind as an alternative when it is windy.

Additionally, Costa Teguise offers a wealth of activities for children.

The local water park, Aquapark Costa Teguise, is a favourite, where both children and adults can spend many hours enjoying the slides and pools.

A visit to nearby Teguise can make a change from the beach. Check opening information directly for any museum or attraction you plan to include, rather than choosing your base around an attraction that may not be open on your dates.

Costa Teguise is also a great starting point for exploring the rest of Lanzarote, with short drives to the island’s attractions such as Timanfaya National Park and Jameos del Agua.

And with Lanzarote Airport only a 15-minute drive away, it’s easy to get from the plane to the holiday paradise.

Places to stay in Costa Teguise

Let’s take a closer look at some of the best hotels in Costa Teguise – in different price ranges, of course.

Grand Teguise Playa is a lovely luxury hotel located right on the beach in Costa Teguise.

Here, you can book rooms with half board at a good price, making it an attractive choice for those who want comfort and convenience.

You’ll find modern facilities, a large pool, and easy access to the beautiful coastline.

The hotel is perfect for those who want a relaxing holiday with a bit of extra luxury.

H10 Suites Lanzarote Gardens is a family-focused option in Costa Teguise, with children’s activities and a pirate-ship pool area with slides. The suite layouts are a useful reason to shortlist it with younger children.

Here, you can enjoy a child-friendly pool and many activities for children of all ages.

Compare the suite or bungalow layout for your family: kitchenette and full-kitchen facilities vary by category, and a separate bedroom can be more useful than simply choosing the lowest nightly rate.

The location is also excellent, with a short distance to the beach and local attractions.

Nazaret Mansion is a quite decent but very cheap hotel in Costa Teguise.

Here, you get simple and comfortable rooms that suit budget travellers.

3. Playa Blanca – peaceful holiday area with great beaches & nature

Playa Blanca is the best place to stay if you’re looking for a peaceful holiday area on Lanzarote with beautiful beaches and stunning nature.

The town is known for its relaxed atmosphere and fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also where you can catch the ferry to Fuerteventura, which takes you to the charming harbour town of Corralejo.

The beaches here are among the best on the island, especially Playa Dorada, with its fine sand and crystal-clear water, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.

Playa Flamingo is another gem, suitable for families with its shallow water and calm waves.

Playa Blanca also has a charming town centre with cosy restaurants and cafes along the promenade. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner with views of the sunset.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Playa Blanca is the easy access to some of Lanzarote’s most spectacular natural areas.

Playa Blanca is a useful base for the Papagayo beaches within Los Ajaches Natural Monument. Check the route and access arrangements for the beach you want to visit; a hotel in Playa Blanca is not necessarily within an easy walk of Papagayo.

It’s also worth visiting the famous Papagayo beaches, known for their unspoiled beauty.

Playa Blanca is a peaceful paradise on Lanzarote, where you can enjoy your holiday at your own pace and still have easy access to both beach and nature.

Here on the southern tip of Lanzarote, you’ll also find an excellent selection of hotels – here are my favourites.

Iberostar Selection Lanzarote Park is a five-star resort near Playa Flamingo. It has family facilities as well as a separate adults-only Star Prestige area, so choose the room category that matches your trip.

The hotel has modern rooms with sea views and offers a wide range of activities for both adults and children.

You can enjoy several restaurants, a spa, and a fitness centre, making it an ideal choice for a relaxing and entertaining holiday.

Hotel Cordial Marina Blanca offers one- and two-bedroom apartments with kitchens near Marina Rubicón. It suits travellers who want apartment space and the marina’s restaurants nearby.

Check the walk to your preferred sandy beach as well as the marina. This is a different part of Playa Blanca from Playa Flamingo, where the Iberostar and Grupotel options listed here are located.

4. Punta Mujeres – charming little fishing village with local life

Punta Mujeres is one of the hidden gems on Lanzarote, a charming little fishing village that offers an authentic glimpse into the local life on the island.

If you’re looking for a unique and charming experience away from the more touristy areas, Punta Mujeres is the place to stay.

The town’s small, white houses and winding streets give an impression of the real Lanzarote, and the local charm is easy to be captivated by.

One of the highlights of Punta Mujeres is the natural sea pools, which offer a refreshing dip in the clear water.

It’s a popular activity among both locals and visitors, and it’s an experience not to be missed. Along the coast, there are also small, cosy beaches where you can relax in the sun.

Punta Mujeres is a good starting point for hiking along the coast, where you can experience the island’s raw and untouched nature.

You can also rent a car and drive north to places like Playa De Orzola and Mirador del Río.

In general, there are just so many scenic places in the northern part of Lanzarote.

Punta Mujeres is the perfect choice for an authentic and relaxing holiday experience on Lanzarote, away from the more commercial areas.

Places to stay in Punta Mujeres

Because Punta Mujeres isn’t one of the major tourist areas, there aren’t many hotels here.

However, there is a good selection of holiday apartments, so let’s look at three great places to stay in Punta Mujeres.

Rocamar Sol y Mar is a holiday home in Punta Mujeres with a pool, a terrace and a kitchen. It suits a self-catering stay where having your own space matters more than hotel service.

The property is arranged over more than one level, so check the stairs and sleeping layout if travelling with young children or anyone with limited mobility. Confirm the pool-heating arrangements and any extra charges for your dates.

The apartment is ideal for those who want to experience local life and have easy access to the nearby natural sea pools.

Other Areas to Consider in Lanzarote

The areas below can also work well, but suit different trips from the four main bases above. I would choose according to beach access, restaurants and how much driving you want to do.

A quieter location is an advantage for some travellers and a drawback for others. Check the actual hotel surroundings rather than treating an entire town as somewhere to avoid.

Arrecife

Arrecife is an urban base with shops, restaurants and a seafront, rather than a purpose-built holiday resort. It can suit a city-focused stay or a practical stop, but compare it with the main resort towns if a large pool complex and beach-holiday atmosphere are your priorities.

There are fewer beaches and attractions than other parts of the island, making it less attractive for those seeking a traditional holiday experience.

Puerto Calero

The area is primarily known for its marina and has limited beach access. It can be a quiet place with few activities and attractions unless you have a car to explore more of the island.

It is not ideal for those seeking a lively atmosphere or family-friendly activities.

Matagorda

Although close to the airport, Matagorda offers limited activities and nightlife outside its central shopping centre.

It is more suitable for families with young children, but those looking for an exciting holiday experience may find it a bit dull.

La Santa

La Santa is known for the large Club La Santa hotel, but it is quite isolated, with limited dining and entertainment options outside the resort.

It is best suited for sports enthusiasts, and those who are not part of this niche may find the area too remote.

Barcelona, however, is a vast city, and it’s essential to know a bit about the many different areas of town before booking a hotel.

Barcelona combines a city break with beach time, but I would not plan it as a cheap destination. Compare the full hotel price for your dates, including any accommodation taxes, breakfast and cancellation terms, rather than relying on the headline nightly rate.

In other words, Barcelona is something close to the perfect destination. But where should one choose to book a hotel in a city with a good size and is visited by countless tourists every year?

1. The Gothic Quarter – the best area in Barcelona

I love the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona. It might be a bit touristy, but the best areas of the big cities in Europe always are.

It makes sense: the tourists want to see the best places, and in Barcelona, the best area is, in my opinion, The Gothic Quarter.

This is an area that, on my first visit, made me think of the cosy, narrow streets in Prague, Covent Garden in London or Edinburgh‘s Old Town.

Walking around the Gothic Quarter, you don’t feel like you’re in a big city but instead in a movie set for a film that takes place in the Middle Ages. And I mean that in the best way possible.

This is a unique area where tourist shops lie alongside local art museums, ancient churches and cosy restaurants with fantastic food at low prices.

It must be said that the Gothic Quarter is on every tourist’s “must-see” list when visiting Barcelona so you won’t have the area to yourself.

But you won’t get that anywhere in Barcelona, so why not stay in the heart of the best area?

This is the old town of Barcelona, so there is no Holiday Inn on every street corner, and if you’re booking your Barcelona hotel last minute, you might be unlucky searching in The Gothic Quarter.

However, I think it is a good benchmark for where to stay in Barcelona – if you are within 5-10 minutes walking distance of the Gothic Quarter, then you know your hotel is centrally located.

From The Gothic Quarter, it is a 15-25 minute walk to the beach depending on where you are.

Places to stay in The Gothic Quarter

There are quite a few places to stay in The Gothic Quarter, but here are a few of my favourite hotels in three different price ranges.

Ohla Barcelona is a five-star luxury hotel offering a premium experience in the city’s heart.

Its biggest draw is the spectacular rooftop terrace with a swimming pool, from which guests can enjoy an unrivalled view of the city’s skyline.

The hotel’s modern, stylish rooms are all equipped with luxury amenities.

In the heart of The Gothic Quarter, Ohla Barcelona is close to major tourist attractions, gourmet restaurants, and high-end shopping areas.

Its dedicated staff is known for their attention to detail, and they are always ready to accommodate the guests’ needs, ensuring a stay of the highest standard.

I had had my eyes on the H10 Cubik hotel for a few years, and in May 2024, I finally got to stay there when I was in Barcelona for the Primavera Festival.

The hotel’s location is pretty much perfect: it’s 50 metres from a metro station and just a 5-minute walk from the Barcelona Cathedral and the Gothic Quarter.

The room was spacious and modern – as expected from a 4-star hotel.

However, the breakfast and the incredible rooftop bar with the little swimming pool made the hotel stand out from the other lovely places in Barcelona.

Getting an ice-cold beer and looking out over the Barcelona skyline was one of my highlights of the trip (btw, May is an excellent month to visit Barcelona).

The breakfast area is nice as well and for the first time ever, I experienced a little pick-and-mix candy set up at the breakfast buffet

They may have some pretty epic hotel breakfasts in Bangkok, but I’ve never experienced candy as part of the breakfast buffet before

All in all – a very good place to stay in the heart of Barcelona.

2. Plaça de Catalunya – stay right in the centre

If we have to talk about another landmark for where to choose to stay in Barcelona, then it must be Plaça de Catalunya.

In other words, this is the centre of Barcelona, so if you book a hotel close to Plaça de Catalunya and want to stay within walking distance of many of the popular things to do in Barcelona, then you’ve made the right choice.

At Plaça de Catalunya, the legendary Rambla starts and stretches down towards the harbour.

So if you want to stay in the centre of Barcelona close to attractions, shopping opportunities and, among other things, you could quickly get from Barcelona Airport to the city centre – Plaça de Catalunya is a perfect choice.

It is about a 30-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya to the beach, but the walk goes through cosy streets and the Gothic Quarter, so it’s a great walk – or a short taxi ride if you’ve had too much sun and want to get straight back to your hotel after a day at the beach

This is also an excellent area to stay in if you travel to Barcelona with children.

Places to stay in Plaça de Catalunya

Let’s look at some good places to stay near Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla.

Iberostar Selection Paseo de Gracia is a luxury hotel located at Placa de Catalunya, in the heart of Barcelona.

One of the hotel’s advantages is the rooftop swimming pool, which offers a nice view of the city’s skyline.

Moreover, it’s close to various attractions such as Casa Batlló, La Rambla, and Passeig de Gracia.

Previous guests have praised Iberostar’s luxurious facilities and ideal location, making exploring the city on foot easy.

It’s an excellent choice for travellers who wish to indulge themselves with a stay right in the heart of Barcelona.

3. Gràcia – the best place to stay for a bohemian vibe

While the first two areas have been classic places to stay in Barcelona, we now jump to a slightly different area – Gràcia.

Gràcia is an area that continues to be referred to as a bohemian area of Barcelona without tourists.

This is no longer the case, as any self-respecting travel blogger has now visited Gràcia and written about it (myself included).

Still, there is no doubt a different atmosphere than in the more classic tourist areas.

I loved the atmosphere, cosy streets, local bars and restaurants around Plaza del Sol.

It is perhaps an area you should stay in when you have been to Barcelona a few times and now want to get a little more under the city’s skin.

If it’s your first trip to Barcelona, I’d probably still recommend one of the other areas on the list, where you’ll be closer to the sights and the beach – but consider Gràcia if you want to experience a different side of Barcelona and still be relatively close to the centre

Places to stay in Gràcia

Radisson Blu 1882 Hotel, Barcelona Sagrada Familia is close to the basilica, on the Sagrada Família side of the city rather than in the heart of Vila de Gràcia. It is worth comparing if the rooftop pool and access to the basilica matter more to you than staying beside Gràcia’s main squares.

4. La Barceloneta – stay right by the beach

Another area that could interest you who travel to Barcelona to enjoy the city’s beaches is La Barceloneta.

Barcelona has several beaches, but the most famous (and closest to the city) is called Barceloneta.

The area next to the beach is called La Barceloneta and is excellent!

The main reason to stay here in the La Barceloneta area is that you are only a small stroll from Barcelona’s famous beach. But you are also very close to the Gothic Quarter and the next place on the list (El Born).

So if you can find a good hotel deal here in La Barceloneta and know that it’s only a 20-25 minute walk to the Rambla, then this will be an excellent place to stay in Barcelona.

Especially if you expect to spend a lot of time on the beach!

Where to avoid in Barcelona?

I have not personally felt unsafe on my visits, but that is not a guarantee about any particular street. For a short holiday, I would choose a hotel around the routes you will use and check recent comments about noise, the entrance and the walk back at night.

El Raval:

El Raval is beside La Rambla and includes cultural attractions, restaurants and hotels. Streets can feel very different from one another, so I would assess the exact location and recent guest feedback rather than rule out the whole neighbourhood.

La Barceloneta Beach at Night

Barceloneta suits a beach-focused stay, but some streets and seafront venues are lively late into the evening. Check soundproofing and room orientation, and keep valuables with you when visiting the beach.

El Besòs i el Maresme

El Besòs i el Maresme is farther from the Gothic Quarter and many first-visit sights. It can make sense for an event near the Fòrum, but compare the metro journey and the hotel’s immediate surroundings before choosing it purely for price.

For a short first visit, I would usually pay more for a convenient base if it saves several long journeys each day. The right choice depends on your plans, especially during festivals and major events.

Where you stay makes a real difference to your holiday. I’d choose very different areas for a trip with friends, a week with children and a break as a couple. Here are my recommendations for six great areas in Ibiza, with hotels to suit different plans and budgets.

Below, I’ll go through each area and recommend hotels in several price ranges, so you can find the right base for your holiday in Ibiza.

1. Ibiza Town - best area for first-time visitors 🏰

• 📍 Distance to the centre: You’ll be in the island’s main town. Dalt Vila, the harbour, Figueretes and Marina Botafoch are different parts of it.
• 🚕 Transport: You can walk locally. Buses or taxis are useful for other beaches and hotels on the opposite side of the harbour.
• ✈️ Journey from Ibiza Airport: Around 10 to 20 minutes by car, depending on traffic and your hotel’s location.
• 💰 Price level: €€ to €€€. A central hotel can be expensive in high season, even without many facilities.
• 👮 Safety: Keep an eye on your phone and bag in busy streets, and bring shoes with a good grip for the steep sections of Dalt Vila.

Ibiza Town, also called Eivissa, is my first choice for a first visit when you want a mix of experiences. You can go out for dinner, walk up to Dalt Vila and spend the evening around the harbour without arranging transport for everything.

The town suits couples and friends who want more than a beach and a hotel restaurant on their doorstep.

Dalt Vila is the fortified Old Town above the harbour. It’s a beautiful setting for a stay, but the hills and steps make a difference, especially with suitcases or in the summer heat.

Down by the harbour, you’ll have easier access to restaurants and more evening activity. Figueretes is on the other side of the town centre and is worth considering if you’d also like to walk from your hotel to a beach and promenade.

I’d stay in the central part of town or Figueretes on a trip without a car. Hotels around Marina Botafoch can also be good, but expect a longer walk around the harbour to reach Dalt Vila.

The broad name Ibiza Town doesn’t tell you enough about the location. The hotels below offer three different options: a stay in Dalt Vila, suites near the beach and a simpler base in town.

Don’t choose Ibiza Town solely to be near all the island’s clubs. They’re spread across different locations, so even with a central address, buses or taxis will often be part of your evening.

Places to Stay in Ibiza Town

Parador de Ibiza - best hotel for a stay in Dalt Vila

Parador de Ibiza is in Dalt Vila, and it’s my suggestion if staying in the historic part of town should be part of the holiday itself. The rooms have air conditioning and room service is available, but the real reason to choose it is to stay up among the walls rather than on a conventional beachfront promenade.

I’d prefer Figueretes for a holiday with lots of swimming; for evening walks in the Old Town, this makes much more sense.

One Ibiza Suites - best suites for the beach and town life

One Ibiza Suites is in Figueretes, around 20 metres from the sandy beach, with a seasonal outdoor pool and sun terrace. It’s a good choice for combining a stay in town with swims without taking a taxi to another beach first.

I’d prioritise a suite with the space you need and use the promenade as the starting point for a holiday where beach time and evening strolls are both easy.

Ryans Budget - a good budget option for a trip with friends

Ryans Budget is a simple option in Ibiza Town when your main aim is a central base and you’d rather spend the rest of your money on food, transport and nights out. I’d consider it for a short trip with friends where the hotel is mainly somewhere to sleep between plans.

It’s a different type of stay from the beach hotels, so the price would need to be noticeably lower before I’d choose it over more space by the water.

2. Playa d’en Bossa - best area for the beach and big clubs 🎧

• 📍 Distance to the centre: Around 3 to 5 km from central Ibiza Town, depending on where along the beach your hotel is.
• 🚕 Transport: You can walk between local hotels, the beach and some clubs. Buses or taxis are useful for Ibiza Town and the rest of the island.
• ✈️ Journey from Ibiza Airport: Allow roughly 10 to 15 minutes by car, or longer in heavy traffic.
• 💰 Price level: €€ to €€€. Beach hotels and popular party dates can be expensive.
• 👮 Safety: Read reviews about noise, watch your belongings in crowds and plan your journey home after a late night.

Playa d’en Bossa is my suggestion when days on the beach and nights at big clubs are the whole point of the trip. The long beach is south of Ibiza Town, and you can stay near venues including Ushuaïa and Hï Ibiza.

That makes it practical for a trip with friends when you’d like to pop back to the hotel between a day by the water and your evening plans.

There’s a difference between staying right by the clubs and further along the beach. Playa d’en Bossa covers quite a large area, so check the actual walking route to the places you’ll be visiting.

That also applies if you’re choosing a hotel for a particular concert or DJ. I’d check the event’s venue and date first, then choose a location, so you don’t pay extra to be near the wrong place.

Hotels range from simple places set a little back from the beach to hotels with spas and suites near the water. Garbi is a good example of somewhere you can enjoy both the beach and the facilities between nights out.

Ibiza Sun is a better fit if a suite and pool matter more than stepping straight onto the sand. Club Can Bossa is worth comparing when you want to keep more of your budget for the rest of the trip.

I’d choose another area for a holiday where complete peace is the priority. Music, traffic and people heading home can be part of the experience, and you may also notice how close the airport is.

Families can find resort holidays here, but Santa Eulària or Cala Llonga would be my first places to look. For a trip built around nights out, Playa d’en Bossa’s location can save several taxi journeys over the holiday.

Places to Stay in Playa d’en Bossa

Hotel Garbi Ibiza & Spa - best beach hotel with a spa near the nightlife

Garbi is right on Playa d’en Bossa, with a pool, spa and beach bar, so you can spend your days at the hotel and have the clubs within a manageable walk. It suits couples and friends who want more comfort between nights out and direct access to the beach.

I’d pay extra for that location on a short trip where time can easily disappear travelling between the hotel, beach and taxis.

Ibiza Sun Apartments - best choice for suites and pools near the beach

Ibiza Sun is around 200 metres from the beach and has two outdoor pools, a hot tub and a bar. It’s a good choice if you’d like a suite and a pool area as your base, without needing a hotel right on the sand.

I’d consider it for a trip with friends or as a couple when you want to go out but also have a little distance from the busiest stretches of the beachfront.

Club Can Bossa - a good budget option set back from the beach

Club Can Bossa is around 400 metres from the beach and has an outdoor pool. You can take a break at the hotel without paying for a beachfront address, which can be a good trade-off on a trip with plenty of plans elsewhere.

I’d choose it when the price is noticeably lower than the beach hotels and put the savings towards evenings out and transport to other parts of the island.

3. Sant Antoni de Portmany - best area for sunsets and a trip with friends 🌅

• 📍 Distance to the centre: You’ll be in a separate town on the west coast, around 15 km from Ibiza Town.
• 🚕 Transport: The town centre and harbour are easy to walk around. Buses and taxis connect other parts of the island; which side of the bay your hotel is on matters.
• ✈️ Journey from Ibiza Airport: Allow around 25 to 35 minutes by car as a planning estimate.
• 💰 Price level: € to €€€. The choice of accommodation gives you more options on a smaller budget than many of the island’s most expensive beach hotels.
• 👮 Safety: There’s plenty of nightlife in the centre. Read reviews about noise and watch your belongings at bars and sunset spots.

Sant Antoni de Portmany is often called San Antonio on booking sites. The town is on the west coast and is a good choice for sunsets, bars and a wider choice of hotels. I’d particularly look here for a trip with friends where price also matters.

You can stay centrally and walk between the harbour, restaurants and nightlife, or choose a hotel a little away from the streets where the party scene is most noticeable.

The area around the sunset bars is a big part of the appeal. It’s lovely to walk down towards the water in the evening without turning it into a major outing, but I’d still check the exact location. Hotels around San Antonio Bay can be a long way from the town centre.

A room overlooking the bay may therefore mean more travelling than a smaller hotel in town, even if both appear as San Antonio in your search.

For a holiday with more comfort, I’d look towards the northern part around Es Caló d’es Moro and on towards Cala Gració. This is where you’ll find Blau Parc and OKU, offering two different hotel experiences away from the middle of the bar streets.

It’s still an area with tourists and plenty going on, so I wouldn’t confuse a quieter hotel address with a promise of silence throughout your holiday.

Sant Antoni isn’t the most practical base if you’ll be spending every evening in Playa d’en Bossa. Compare the lower hotel price with what you expect to spend travelling across the island. You can check current connections with the island’s bus operator, but pay attention to the season and the last departure.

I’d choose Sant Antoni to enjoy the west coast and the town itself, then head elsewhere on evenings when the plans make sense.

OKU Ibiza - best luxury hotel for friends or couples

OKU is a five-star hotel with a restaurant, bar, gym and garden, where the interiors and time around the pool are a big part of the stay. I’d choose it when you want more from your days than waiting for the evening’s plans.

The location north of the centre works best if you don’t mind a longer journey to the harbour and prefer a more luxurious hotel to the most central address.

Blau Parc is beside the small beach of Es Caló d’es Moro in the northern part of Sant Antoni. It’s a good option if you want the sea close by and evenings along the west coast, while staying a little away from the busiest party streets in the centre.

I’d choose it as a middle ground between a hotel purely for a town stay and somewhere further away where every dinner means arranging transport.

Hostal Marí - best budget option in central Sant Antoni

Hostal Marí is a family-run guesthouse in the centre with a café and restaurant. I’d stay here if the plan was to be out most of the day and walk to places to eat in the evening, rather than pay extra for a large resort.

It’s a simpler base, but the central location makes it worth considering when you want to keep hotel costs down and still have town life close by.

4. Santa Eulària des Riu - best town for families and quiet evenings 🌴

• 📍 Distance to the centre: Around 15 km from Ibiza Town. Choose somewhere near the centre, beach or marina if you want to walk to most places.
• 🚕 Transport: The promenade and town centre are easy to walk around. Buses, taxis or a car are useful for trips out of town.
• ✈️ Journey from Ibiza Airport: Roughly 25 to 35 minutes by car.
• 💰 Price level: €€ to €€€. There are plenty of good hotels, but a quieter town doesn’t automatically mean lower prices.
• 👮 Safety: Keep children close by the marina, follow the beach flags and check how far your hotel is from the main roads.

Santa Eulària des Riu, also written Santa Eulalia, is my choice for the best place to stay for a family holiday in Ibiza with a beach, restaurants and a proper town beside your hotel. You can walk along the promenade and choose from places to eat without the big clubs setting the tone.

It also suits couples who want quiet evenings but would still like to go out and find somewhere new for dinner.

I’d start the search around the central beach and marina. That way, most little outings can be on foot, and you won’t need to pack the car to buy an ice cream or go down to the water. Hotels further along the coast may have more space, but it’s worth checking the walk back to the centre.

A good family base is as much about everyday distances as the number of pools.

There are also plenty of adults-only hotels in the area, so check the hotel type before falling in love with the photos. Catalonia Royal Ses Estaques below is a choice for couples, for example, while Hotel Tres Torres offers a different type of stay near the marina.

For somewhere smaller with a garden and pool, Ibizazen is worth considering. All three offer different settings for your stay, even though the town is the same.

I’d choose a different base if you want to go clubbing every night. The distance to the main party areas makes transport a recurring part of the budget. Santa Eulària works best when you actually want to enjoy the beach, restaurants and slower pace here.

Catalonia Royal Ses Estaques - Adults Only - best seaside hotel for couples

Catalonia Royal Ses Estaques is by the sea near the marina area. It’s an adults-only hotel where the pool and relaxation take priority over children’s activities. I’d suggest it for couples who want a comfortable hotel stay and the option of heading into Santa Eulària for dinner.

I’d choose a suite based on the view and space, so the hotel is also somewhere you’ll want to spend your afternoons.

I’d choose it for couples who want to spend time in green surroundings and value a small hotel more than a spot right on the beachfront promenade.

5. Portinatx - best area for a quiet beach holiday in the north 🐠

• 📍 Distance to the centre: You’ll be in a small resort on the north coast, around 30 km from Ibiza Town.
• 🚕 Transport: You can walk between the local beaches and places to eat. A car helps if you want to take several day trips; check current bus departures.
• ✈️ Journey from Ibiza Airport: Allow around 40 to 50 minutes by car as a planning estimate.
• 💰 Price level: €€ to €€€. There’s less choice than in the larger resorts, so compare options early for high season.
• 👮 Safety: Follow the beach flags, keep to clear coastal paths and don’t let children walk alone near the cliffs.

Portinatx is my suggestion if you want a holiday in northern Ibiza with small beaches and less town life around you. You can stay near the coves and let your days revolve around swimming, lunch and a return to the pool.

I’d particularly choose it as a couple or with family when the priority is relaxing by the sea and having a small, easy base to return to.

The area has several small beaches, including S’Arenal Petit, and it’s worth checking your hotel’s position in relation to that particular beach. A hotel right by the water can make everyday life easy, while an address further uphill can mean more slopes between your room and a swim.

I’d choose a short walk to the beach when travelling with children and expecting to head back for food or a midday break.

The distance to the south is the main compromise. You can easily visit Ibiza Town, but I wouldn’t choose Portinatx if you already know you’ll spend most evenings down there. That would mean plenty of time in a car and money spent on transport.

It’s a different matter for a holiday with just a few outings, and a hire car can give you the freedom to see more of the northern part of the island at your own pace.

You’ll also have fewer restaurants and hotel options than in Santa Eulària, so your choice of accommodation matters more. Several hotels are adults-only, while others offer a simpler setting near the beach.

I’d choose a room category with a sea view if afternoons on the terrace or balcony are part of the plan, and use the hotel as a base for a quiet stay rather than daily trips to the clubs in town.

Cala Llonga is a small, easy-to-get-around resort around a sandy bay on the east coast. I’d choose it if you want your beach holiday in one compact area without having to pick between lots of different neighbourhoods.

You can spend your days by the bay and eat nearby in the evening, while Santa Eulària and Ibiza Town are still options for a day trip when you fancy more town life.

It’s a particularly good choice for families who want short journeys between their accommodation, the beach and a meal. There are also larger hotels, so couples can choose more comfort and spend their days by the pool.

I’d still check the specific type of hotel: somewhere with music around the pool gives you a different holiday from a smaller apartment set back from the water, even if both are in the same quiet bay.

The ground rises around the beach, and photos taken from a balcony can hide quite a few steps or a hill on the way home. Choose based on the route to the water if you’re travelling with a pushchair or want to walk back and forth several times a day.

Hotels right by the bay make it easy to stay in the area, while an apartment a little further away may give you more space for your money if you don’t mind the extra walk.

Cala Llonga is less suited to a week where you want to eat somewhere new late every evening and visit several big clubs. For that, I’d rather stay in Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa. Here, I’d plan a few outings and otherwise keep the days simple.

Outside the busiest season, check opening hours and transport connections before expecting the same choice of activities as in midsummer.

I’d choose it as a couple or for a holiday where you’ll spend a fair part of the day at the hotel, and weigh up the exact room view against the price before choosing a category.

I’d choose it for a stay where the beach and day trips matter more than the hotel’s interiors, and where a smaller place suits the budget better than the large resorts.

Where Should You Avoid Staying in Ibiza?

I’d avoid booking a hotel right in the nightlife if you want a quiet holiday, even if the price is good. That applies to parts of Playa d’en Bossa and the busiest party streets in Sant Antoni.

Read about noise at the specific address rather than just the town in general, as two hotels a few streets apart can be very different.

I also wouldn’t stay far north to save on the hotel if the plan is to visit clubs near Ibiza Town or Playa d’en Bossa almost every evening. Transport becomes a regular expense and takes time out of your holiday.

Without a car, a villa far from a town or beach isn’t automatically a good deal either, even if the pool photos look lovely.

For a first trip, I’d start with Ibiza Town because it gives you several options within one holiday. Playa d’en Bossa works best when you want to combine the beach and clubs, while Sant Antoni is a good suggestion for sunsets and a trip with friends.

Santa Eulària is my first choice for a family holiday with a proper town close by, and Cala Llonga makes it easy to centre your days on a beach-lined bay.

I’d choose Portinatx when peace, swimming and a few outings are enough for a good holiday. Start with the area that suits your plans, then compare hotels for your actual dates.

In Ibiza, the right address is often worth more than an extra star because it determines how easily you can have the holiday you came for. On a short trip, I’d keep one base and spend the time enjoying the island rather than changing hotels. A week gives you more room for both beach days and trips to other areas.

The good news is that Madrid Airport is only about 12 kilometres north-east of central Madrid. You can travel by Metro, Cercanías train, Airport Express bus, taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. The best option depends mainly on your terminal, arrival time and where you are staying.

If you have not chosen a neighbourhood yet, start with my guide to where to stay in Madrid. It will make the transport choice much easier because a hotel near Atocha, Cibeles or a convenient Metro station can save you a change.

Quick answer: take the Cercanías train if you land at Terminal 4 and are staying near Chamartín, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos or Atocha. Choose Metro Line 8 if your hotel is convenient for Nuevos Ministerios or an easy Metro connection. The Airport Express bus is the simplest 24-hour public option, while a taxi is usually best for a door-to-door journey with luggage.

The transport details and prices below were checked against official sources on 12 September 2026. Always check live service information before travelling, especially if you arrive late or during engineering work.

How far is Madrid Airport from the city centre?

The road distance to your hotel varies, but the airport is close enough that the transfer is normally manageable. A taxi can take around 25 to 40 minutes in ordinary traffic. Public transport typically takes 30 to 50 minutes to the central area once transfers and walking are included.

Know your terminal before choosing

Madrid-Barajas has terminals T1, T2, T3 and T4, plus the T4 Satellite building. The transport options are not identical at every terminal. Metro serves T1-T2-T3 through one station at T2 and has a separate station at T4. Cercanías trains stop only at T4. The Airport Express bus stops at T1, T2 and T4, but not T3.

If you need to change terminals, Aena operates a free 24-hour shuttle bus between T1, T2, T3 and T4. T1, T2 and T3 are also linked by walkways. Check the airport’s official terminal connection information rather than assuming every train or bus serves your arrival hall.

Madrid Airport transport at a glance

1. Metro from Madrid Airport to the centre

Metro Line 8 runs from both airport stations to Nuevos Ministerios. According to Aena, the journey takes about 13 minutes from T1-T2-T3 and 18 minutes from T4. Trains operate daily from 06:05 until 02:00, with the last departure from each end at 01:33.

Nuevos Ministerios is north of the historic centre, so most visitors need to change there. Lines 6 and 10 provide onward connections, while other central journeys may require another interchange. Allow roughly 30 to 45 minutes for the complete trip to areas such as Sol, Gran Vía or Malasaña, plus the walk to your accommodation.

A Metro Zone A single from the airport costs €4.50 to €5: the ordinary fare is €1.50 to €2 depending on the number of stops, and the airport supplement is €3. A reusable Multi card is also required if you do not already have one. You can buy and load it from the machines at the airport stations.

The airport supplement is not needed with a valid 30-day pass or Tourist Ticket. Metro de Madrid explains the current fares and airport supplement, while Aena lists the airport stations and operating hours.

2. Cercanías train from Terminal 4

The Cercanías C1 train is often the quickest-value combination if you arrive at T4. It connects the airport with Chamartín-Clara Campoamor, Nuevos Ministerios, Recoletos and Atocha. These stations are useful for hotels in several central districts and for onward rail connections.

The important correction to the old Danish article is that the airport train station is at T4, not T1. Travellers arriving at T1, T2 or T3 must first use the free terminal shuttle to T4 or choose Metro or bus instead. The airport station is on level -1.

Aena currently lists single fares from €1.70 to €2.60 depending on the number of zones. Tickets are valid for one journey within two hours of issue. Renfe’s official Madrid Cercanías network information is the place to check live service changes; Aena also summarises the airport train and fare.

Choose the train if your accommodation is within an easy walk or simple connection from one of those stations. If you are staying around Sol, you will normally need an onward Metro or local train connection, so compare the total route rather than the airport leg alone.

3. Airport Express bus 203

The yellow Airport Express, EMT line 203, runs 24 hours a day and links T1, T2 and T4 with central Madrid. The €5 fare is the same regardless of distance. You can pay the driver with cash, although change is limited to €20, or use a bank card or mobile payment.

During the day the route serves Atocha and Cibeles. At night, Cibeles is the central terminus, so do not plan on staying aboard to Atocha after the daytime service ends. EMT currently schedules buses every 15 to 20 minutes from 06:00 to 23:30 and every 35 minutes overnight.

EMT estimates about 30 minutes from Atocha to T1, 35 minutes to T2 and 40 minutes to T4 in normal traffic. The airport-to-centre journey can take longer when roads are busy, so leave extra time on the return trip. See the official Airport Express page for stops, frequencies and payment information.

Regular EMT buses are another option. Line 200 runs between all four terminals and Avenida de América, while line 101 serves T1, T2 and T3 from Canillejas. These can be useful if your hotel is near their interchange, but most first-time visitors will find the express bus easier.

4. Taxi from Madrid Airport

A taxi is the easiest door-to-door choice. Official taxis wait at clearly signed ranks outside arrivals at T1, T2 and T4. They are white with a red stripe and the Madrid coat of arms on the doors. Ignore anyone approaching you inside the terminal to offer an unofficial ride.

For 2026, Madrid’s fixed airport fare is €33 between the airport and any destination inside the M-30 ring road. It applies 24 hours a day and no supplement may be added. This covers most central hotels. Trips outside the M-30 use different rules, so confirm the fare if your accommodation is farther out.

The city council publishes the legally binding Madrid taxi fares for 2026. Aena’s official taxi guidance also shows the ranks and advises passengers to ask for a receipt.

5. Pre-booked private transfer

A private transfer makes sense if you want the price and meeting arrangement confirmed before flying. It can also be practical for a larger group, an early departure, bulky luggage or anyone who would prefer not to navigate public transport after a long journey.

Check exactly what is included before paying: the luggage allowance, waiting time after landing, flight tracking, child seats, cancellation policy and whether the quoted price covers your precise address. Do not compare only the headline price, because some services quote per person and others per vehicle.

Which option should you choose?

• Staying near Atocha, Recoletos, Nuevos Ministerios or Chamartín after landing at T4: check the Cercanías train first.
• Staying near a convenient Metro station: Line 8 is predictable and avoids road traffic, but account for the change at Nuevos Ministerios.
• Arriving very late: the 24-hour Airport Express to Cibeles is the main public option; otherwise choose a taxi or private transfer.
• Travelling as a family or group: divide the €33 taxi fare between you before assuming public transport is cheaper.
• Carrying heavy luggage: a direct taxi or transfer is usually worth the extra cost.

Madrid transport tickets for visitors

If you plan to use public transport repeatedly, compare individual fares with the Madrid Tourist Ticket. It is available for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7 calendar days. Zone A covers Madrid city and includes the Metro airport supplement, but the ticket is not valid on the Airport Express bus.

The Regional Transport Consortium lists current prices and validity on its official Tourist Ticket page. Buy it because it suits your whole stay, not only to avoid the airport supplement. For a short trip with limited public transport use, individual fares can still be better value.

Getting back to Madrid Airport

Work backwards from the time your airline recommends arriving at the terminal. Then add the full city-to-airport journey, any change, a buffer for delays and enough time to reach the correct check-in area. T4 and T4 Satellite are not the same building, so passengers using the satellite terminal need additional time after reaching T4.

For an early flight, check the first Metro or train before relying on it. The Airport Express runs overnight, but frequencies are lower and the central terminus is Cibeles. A taxi inside the M-30 uses the same €33 fixed fare in either direction.

The area between Postiguet Beach and the marina is one of Alicante's most recognisable corners. Paseo de Gómiz follows the beach, with the palm-lined Explanada de España nearby. This is where I'd start looking if a view of the water is a major part of the holiday you have in mind.

Postiguet is the city's central beach, below Santa Bárbara Castle and a short walk from the Old Town. You can swim in the morning, wander into the historic streets for lunch and return to the hotel without a tram journey. That easy combination is the area's main strength.

Several of the larger hotels here offer pools, restaurants and other facilities that suit a longer stay or a trip for two. Be precise about the room category: a marina view and an open-sea view are different experiences, and access to certain pools or lounges may depend on the package you book.

The waterfront can also be easier with luggage than the hillier streets of El Barrio. Still, check the walk from the airport bus stop and the hotel's parking arrangements instead of assuming every property has convenient, included parking. The harbour roads remain working streets, not a traffic-free resort.

The drawback is the price. Compare sea-view and other rooms for your actual dates, particularly in July and August. Alicante's Hogueras de San Juan celebrations also bring a very different atmosphere to the centre in June, with festivities and possible changes to access. If you're travelling then, book early and check the programme rather than expecting a quiet beach break.

Meliá Alicante – large waterfront hotel

Playa de San Juan is the choice for a proper beach holiday. The official tourism office lists San Juan Beach itself as roughly 2.9 km long; the sandy coastline continues into neighbouring Muchavista. There's a broad seafront, plenty of sand and a very different feel from compact Postiguet.

Compared with the centre, you'll find wider roads, more space and a stronger holiday atmosphere. Families and visitors staying for longer tend to appreciate being able to organise the day around the beach rather than around sightseeing. Check exactly how far your chosen hotel is from the seafront: an address in the San Juan area doesn't always mean you're directly beside the sand.

You can reach Alicante by tram, but choose the right line and stop. TRAM d'Alacant's L4 and L5 timetable helps show how the beach area connects with the city; confirm the latest service before travelling. Allow around 30-45 minutes for many trips, plus the walk at either end, rather than planning around a single fixed journey time.

The trade-off is the distance from central Alicante and its historic streets. A tapas evening in El Barrio is perfectly possible, but it involves more planning than when you stay downtown. Outside the main season, the area is quieter and some beach businesses reduce their hours. If the beach isn't the main purpose of the trip, I'd choose El Barrio or Postiguet instead.

Where should you avoid staying in Alicante?

For a short city break, I wouldn't choose an outlying hotel just because the initial room price looks low. Playa de la Albufereta, Cabo de las Huertas and El Campello can suit travellers who want a specific coastal setting, but they are less convenient if you plan to spend most evenings in central Alicante. Check the actual walk to public transport and the journey home before booking.

Likewise, accommodation around Alipark or commercial areas south of Avenida de Elche isn't my first choice for a holiday focused on the Old Town and beach. Those locations may serve a particular purpose, but compare the total cost and time spent travelling with a more central hotel.

If you're visiting during Hogueras de San Juan or in high summer, book well ahead and read the cancellation conditions. Air conditioning, a convenient route back to the hotel and access to a pool can matter a lot in the heat. I'd weigh those practical benefits against the room price rather than assume that the cheapest address gives the best holiday.

In this guide, I'll take you through four areas that work well for a city break. I'll explain their differences, suggest specific hotels and cover the practical details that are easy to miss when you're looking at a hotel map.

Here are the best areas to stay in Seville:

• Santa Cruz – best area for your first visit.
• El Arenal – best area for a central riverside location.
• Triana – best area for tapas and neighbourhood life.
• Centro and Alfalfa – best area for shopping and restaurants.

The centre is easy to explore on foot, although the summer heat can make even short walks tiring. The distances below use the cathedral as a reference point. TUSSAM's EA airport bus runs into the city; you'll often need to walk the final stretch to your hotel. 1. Santa Cruz – best area for your first visit 🏛️

• Distance to the centre: A central location, usually within 0-800 metres of the cathedral.
• Public transport: Trams and the metro around Puerta de Jerez are within walking distance; streets within the neighbourhood are narrow.
• From the airport: Around 30-45 minutes by taxi, or 45-70 minutes by EA bus and on foot, depending on traffic and the address.
• Price range: €€-€€€; the location comes at a premium, particularly around holidays and popular weekends.
• Safety: Watch out for pickpockets in crowds. Even little lanes can have restaurant noise and early deliveries.

Santa Cruz is my first choice for a short break when you want to spend your time enjoying the city rather than getting around it. You'll be close to the cathedral and Alcázar, surrounded by a network of narrow streets, small squares and restaurants. That makes it easy to head out early and return to the hotel when the midday heat sets in.

The official tourist board has a useful introduction to Santa Cruz and its small squares. I'd use the streets around Plaza de Doña Elvira and Callejón del Agua as reference points. You don't need a hotel right beside the cathedral to get a good location; a couple of streets away can be a better compromise.

You pay for having the main sights close by, and this is also one of the most visited neighbourhoods. Don't expect to have the streets to yourself. On the plus side, staying here lets you enjoy the area at different times from the day-trippers, with a short walk before breakfast or after dinner.

Book your visit to the Real Alcázar and check the cathedral's practical visitor information so you can plan your days around your tickets. A central hotel is particularly handy if you have a few hours between visits and don't want to spend the break on another long walk.

I'd choose Santa Cruz for couples and first-time visitors who want to feel immersed in Seville as soon as they step outside. If you have a large suitcase or find stairs and uneven surfaces difficult, check the hotel's access arrangements. A taxi won't necessarily be able to reach the front door in the narrowest streets.

Hotel Alfonso XIII – luxury

One of the city's classic luxury hotels, on the southern edge of Santa Cruz by Puerta de Jerez. It's an obvious contender if beautiful shared spaces and the hotel experience itself are part of the appeal of your trip, with the Alcázar and cathedral still close by.

Hotel Casa 1800 Sevilla – upper mid-range

A smaller hotel near the cathedral with a rooftop pool that can be a welcome break from sightseeing. I'd particularly consider it for a couples' trip when you want to combine a very central location with a more personal hotel setting.

Hotel Murillo – budget to mid-range

A simpler option in Santa Cruz, where the location is the main selling point. It's worth comparing with the area's more expensive boutique hotels if you mainly need a good base for walks, tapas and early visits to the sights.

2. El Arenal – best area for a central riverside location 🌉

• Distance to the centre: West of the cathedral, around 300-900 metres away depending on your hotel.
• Public transport: Walk into the centre or use buses along the neighbourhood's edges; Puerta de Jerez is useful in the south.
• From the airport: Around 30-45 minutes by taxi, or 40-65 minutes by EA bus and on foot.
• Price range: €€-€€€; a mix of small hotels and exclusive addresses.
• Safety: The riverfront and main sights get busy. Check reviews for noise from bars and traffic at the specific address.

El Arenal is a very good compromise if you'd like to stay close to Santa Cruz without having a hotel in the middle of its narrowest tourist lanes. The neighbourhood sits between the cathedral and the Guadalquivir, so you can swap the city's tightly packed streets for a more open riverside walk in just a few minutes.

It's especially practical if you want to eat out in different parts of the city. Santa Cruz lies to the east and Triana is across the bridge. You don't have to plan all your dinners around the street closest to your hotel. In the evening, it's easy to take a detour along the river on your way back.

I'd look at the hotel's position in relation to the bridges and cathedral rather than simply picking the first place with a river view. The main roads along the water can have traffic, while the side streets within El Arenal often make a more pleasant base. The view from your particular room may not be the one shown on the hotel's homepage, either.

For a summer trip, keep the option of a hotel break in mind. You can visit a sight in the morning, have a leisurely lunch and head out again later. This location makes that straightforward: there's no long bus journey or distant bridge to work into your plans every time.

In my view, El Arenal suits couples and anyone who wants a slightly more flexible base than Santa Cruz. This is still central Seville, with restaurants, visitors and lively streets. If peace and quiet is your priority, I'd look for a courtyard-facing room before considering a distant suburb.

Hotel Mercer Sevilla – luxury

A small luxury hotel in El Arenal that makes particular sense for a special weekend for two. The location lets you combine quiet breaks at the hotel with walks to the cathedral and dinner on either side of the river.

Las Casas de El Arenal – mid-range

Here, you'll stay in traditional buildings on the neighbourhood's streets rather than in a large modern complex. I'd consider it if you want a central base with a sense of Seville's courtyards and older houses around you.

Adriano Boutique Sevilla – often a more affordable option in the area

A smaller hotel on Calle Adriano, well placed for both the river and the city centre. Compare it with the other hotels in El Arenal if you want to keep costs down without moving far from the sights.

3. Triana – best area for tapas and neighbourhood life 🍷

• Distance to the centre: On the western side of the river, around 1-2 km from the cathedral.
• Public transport: Buses and walkable routes across the bridges; Plaza de Cuba metro station is useful in the southern part.
• From the airport: Around 30-45 minutes by taxi, or 50-80 minutes by bus and on foot, depending on the connection.
• Price range: €-€€€; a wider price range than in the most touristy streets around the cathedral.
• Safety: Check reviews for evening noise near bars. A riverside location isn't automatically a quiet one.

Triana is for you if you'd like a neighbourhood with its own everyday life, even once you've finished sightseeing for the day. You'll cross the Guadalquivir to reach the cathedral and Alcázar, but this is no distant suburb. Crossing the bridge becomes part of your day in the city.

Around the market and Calle San Jacinto, you'll find shops, places to eat and plenty of reasons to stay on this side of the river in the evening. If you'd like to learn about the neighbourhood's craft heritage, Centro Cerámica Triana is a worthwhile stop. It's a good way to see something beyond the biggest monuments.

I'd choose Triana if you have more than a couple of days in Seville and would like to spend your evenings close to the hotel. On a very short trip, Santa Cruz or El Arenal can be more convenient, especially if you've booked several early-morning visits. The distance is manageable, but you still have to walk it.

Bear in mind that Triana covers more than the streets beside Puente de Isabel II. A hotel further north or west can leave you with much longer walks than photos of the river might suggest. I'd check the walking time to the bridge rather than relying on the neighbourhood name in the hotel description.

Triana isn't a shortcut to automatically finding cheap hotels; there are expensive boutique hotels here too. Its strengths are the choice and the feeling of returning to a different neighbourhood in the evening. Cavalta Boutique Hotel – luxury

A boutique hotel in Triana for travellers who want to make the hotel experience a priority and stay away from the busiest streets around the cathedral. Check its location on the map: the walk to the main sights is longer than from hotels right beside the bridge.

Ribera de Triana Hotel – mid-range

The hotel is by the river in northern Triana, close to Puente del Cristo de la Expiración. It can be a good compromise between hotel comforts and neighbourhood life, but is less obvious a choice if you want the shortest possible walk to Santa Cruz.

B&B Casa Alfareria 59 – budget to mid-range

A smaller place to stay in Triana's streets, suited to travellers who prefer something intimate to a large hotel. It's worth considering for a trip where breakfast, walks and neighbourhood restaurants matter more than hotel facilities.

4. Centro and Alfalfa – best area for shopping and restaurants 🛍️

• Distance to the centre: North of the cathedral, around 500 metres to 1.3 km away depending on the location.
• Public transport: Mostly on foot, with buses around the area's edges and trams near Plaza Nueva.
• From the airport: Around 30-45 minutes by taxi, or 50-75 minutes by EA bus and on foot.
• Price range: €-€€€; a broad mix of accommodation and smaller hotels.
• Safety: Bars, squares and shopping streets can be noisy. Check access arrangements if the hotel is on a pedestrianised street.

Centro and Alfalfa make sense if you'd like shops, cafés and restaurants nearby but don't need the cathedral on your doorstep. Here, I'm talking about the streets around Alfalfa and Salvador and further towards Setas. You're still in Seville's Old Town, with plenty of scope to get around on foot.

The atmosphere changes over short distances. The main shopping streets are lively during the day, while small squares with bars can stay busy late into the evening. I'd focus on the particular street when choosing. A central hotel can be excellent, but a room directly above a popular bar is a different proposition.

One of the area's clearest landmarks is Setas de Sevilla, whose website has information on access and visiting. Staying around Alfalfa gives you a good base for both the streets to the north and the sights to the south. It's a useful balance if you don't want to follow the same route every day.

I'd also consider this area if you're travelling with friends who have slightly different plans. Some can go shopping, others can visit a museum, and you can meet for a late lunch near the hotel. That flexibility is often more valuable than choosing a hotel purely for its proximity to one particular sight.

You'll need to accept slightly longer walks to the river than from El Arenal. In return, there's a wide choice of smaller hotels and places to eat, and it's easy to enjoy the neighbourhood in the evening. Places to Stay in Centro and Alfalfa

Hotel Boutique Corral del Rey – luxury

A small boutique hotel in the streets around Alfalfa, well suited to a trip for two. I'd look here if you value a more intimate hotel experience while still being able to walk to the cathedral and the city's restaurants.

H10 Casa de la Plata – upper mid-range

A central hotel around the shopping streets between Salvador and Setas. It's a good option if you want a comfortable hotel in a location where shopping and sightseeing fit into the day without much planning.

A smaller hotel close to Setas in the northern part of the area covered here. It's worth comparing if you'd like to save a little on location and don't mind the extra walk to the cathedral.

Where should you avoid staying in Seville?

On a short trip, I wouldn't choose a hotel far outside the central area just to save a little on the room. Nervión or the area around Santa Justa can be practical for trains, work or specific events, but you'll spend more time travelling back and forth to the streets most visitors come to experience.

I also wouldn't automatically pick the busiest squares in Santa Cruz or Alfalfa if a good night's sleep matters to you. Look for recent reviews mentioning street noise and air conditioning, and check whether a car can actually reach the hotel. In summer, a convenient base where you can take breaks is often worth more than a small saving far from the centre.

I’d choose Ciutat Vella for a first city break, Ruzafa for restaurants and evenings out, and Cabanyal beach for a holiday with sand between your toes. Here’s my guide to the three areas and nine hotels worth a closer look.

• Ciutat Vella (Old Town) – best for a first visit and sightseeing on foot.
• Ruzafa and Eixample – best for restaurants, cafés and city life.
• Cabanyal and Las Arenas – best for a beach holiday with trips into the centre.

Hotel prices depend heavily on your dates. Budget, mid-range and luxury describe the choices in this guide, rather than a fixed nightly rate. The area links open a search on Booking.com; use the map to check each hotel’s exact address.

1. Ciutat Vella – best area for your first visit

• Distance to the centre: You’re in the centre, roughly 0-1.5 km from Plaça de l’Ajuntament, depending on the address.
• Metro: Xàtiva at the southern end and Colón on the eastern edge; hotels further north involve a longer walk.
• From the airport: Allow approximately 35-55 minutes by metro and on foot.
• Price level: €€-€€€, with a few simpler places to stay.
• Safety: Keep an eye on your bag and phone in crowds, and read reviews about street noise at the specific address.

Ciutat Vella would be my first choice if you have two or three days in Valencia and want to spend as much of that time as possible enjoying the city. The cathedral, the squares around Plaça de la Reina and Mercat Central are all within a manageable area. You can head out for breakfast and carry straight on to your first stop of the day.

This is also where you’ll find Valencia’s Old Town. Small streets, churches and squares make it ideal for a wander without a strict itinerary. I’d particularly look for a hotel around the market or between the town hall square and the cathedral if a convenient location matters more than being close to particular bars.

Don’t think of Ciutat Vella as one uniform hotel district, though. El Carmen in the north suits travellers who want bars and nightlife nearby. The southern part around the town hall square makes it easier to reach Estació del Nord railway station and the metro. If you’re a light sleeper, a room facing a courtyard may suit you better than a balcony over a busy square.

The biggest drawback is the distance to the beach. It isn’t just around the corner, so a swim becomes a separate outing. On the other hand, you won’t need to travel into the centre to see the historic sights every morning.

If you’re arriving by metro, you can check the airport connections on Metrovalencia’s official map. Look at the walk from the station before booking, too: on a map, a hotel near the cathedral can look just as convenient for transport as one by Xàtiva, but you’ll notice the difference with luggage.

Places to Stay in Ciutat Vella

Caro Hotel – luxury

Caro Hotel is a five-star hotel in a historic mansion close to the cathedral, with archaeological remains incorporated into its design. I’d consider it for a couples’ break where the hotel itself should feel special. The rooms vary, so compare the photographs of the exact category you’re choosing.

Vincci Mercat – mid-range

Vincci Mercat is a four-star hotel near Mercat Central, with a roof terrace and a small plunge pool. It’s worth a look if you want a central base with somewhere to take a break above the rooftops after sightseeing. The pool is for a quick dip, so choose it primarily for the location.

Venecia Plaza Centro – budget option

Venecia Plaza Centro is right on the town hall square and has double rooms as well as rooms for three or four people. It’s my suggestion for a simpler option with a very central location. Some rooms overlook the square, so check the category if that’s what you’re after.

2. Ruzafa and Eixample – best area for restaurants and city life

• Distance to the centre: Roughly 0.5-2 km from Plaça de l’Ajuntament.
• Metro: Russafa for Ruzafa; Colón or Alameda may be more convenient in northern Eixample.
• From the airport: Allow approximately 35-60 minutes by public transport and on foot.
• Price level: €€-€€€.
• Safety: Choose your hotel with the specific street in mind, paying particular attention to bar and traffic noise.

Ruzafa is where I’d look if restaurant visits and long evenings out matter more to your holiday than staying beside the cathedral. Cafés, places to eat and small shops are close together, giving you plenty to head out to once the day’s sightseeing is done.

The Valencian spelling is Russafa, so you’ll see both names on maps and signs. It’s part of the larger Eixample district, which also includes Gran Via and El Pla del Remei. I’ve grouped them together to give you a wider choice of hotels, but the location matters: a hotel by the Turia Gardens isn’t in the middle of Ruzafa’s restaurant streets.

Around Mercat de Russafa is where I’d look for a base for morning coffee, lunches out and evening strolls. Further north, the streets are wider and it’s easier to reach the shops around Colón. The tourist board’s guide to Ruzafa and Eixample gives a useful overview of the differences.

The area works particularly well for couples and friends who want a central base outside the Old Town. You can still walk to the historic sights, although it’s a longer walk from the southern part of Ruzafa. Expect to use transport to get to the beach.

My main advice is to check recent reviews for noise before choosing a room. An address above a popular bar might be fine for a weekend with friends, but less appealing with small children. Check the nearest station on the metro map as well: Russafa station doesn’t mean a direct airport connection. For some hotels, walking from Xàtiva or Colón will be simpler than changing again.

Places to Stay in Ruzafa and Eixample

Hospes Palau de la Mar – luxury

Hospes Palau de la Mar is in Eixample near the Turia Gardens, in a 19th-century mansion with a Bodyna spa and restaurant. I’d consider it for a couples’ break with time to relax at the hotel. It’s in northern Eixample, so you’ll need to walk to Ruzafa’s restaurant streets.

Hotel Dimar – mid-range

Hotel Dimar is on Gran Vía Marqués del Turia, close to the Turia Gardens, with facilities including a gym and sauna. It’s a practical choice if you’d like to combine walks in the park with Eixample’s restaurants. You’re on a major boulevard, so ask for a room away from traffic if you’re a light sleeper.

Petit Palace Ruzafa – budget option in this selection

Petit Palace Ruzafa is on Carrer de Sueca in Ruzafa itself, with room options for families or friends travelling together. I’d compare it with the two hotels above if the neighbourhood’s cafés and restaurants matter more than a spa. A smaller room could work for a short stay, but check the space and bed configuration before booking.

3. Cabanyal and Las Arenas – best area for a beach holiday

• Distance to the centre: Roughly 5 km from Plaça de l’Ajuntament to the seafront promenade.
• Metro and tram: Marítim for the metro; Neptú or Les Arenes for the tram, depending on your hotel.
• From the airport: Allow approximately 60-80 minutes by public transport, including changes and walking.
• Price level: €-€€€, with a big difference between simple hotels and the beach resort.
• Safety: Don’t leave valuables unattended while swimming. Think about your route back to the hotel in the evening, too.

Would you rather start the day with a walk by the sea and be able to pop back to your hotel after the beach? Then I’d stay by Cabanyal beach, which is also associated with the name Las Arenas. You’ll find a seafront promenade, restaurants and a wide sandy beach, while the centre is some distance inland.

It’s a different starting point for your holiday from Ciutat Vella. You can keep beach days easy and group the historic sights into one or two trips into town. I think it makes particular sense for a longer holiday where swimming and relaxing matter more than a packed sightseeing itinerary.

There’s an important difference between Cabanyal beach itself and the residential streets of El Cabanyal behind it. A hotel described as being in Cabanyal isn’t necessarily on the seafront. All three hotels below are by the beach, so you won’t accidentally choose somewhere far from the water.

If you’d like to eat somewhere other than the promenade, you can head into El Cabanyal, a neighbourhood with roots as a fishing community. It’s also a chance to see more than sand and hotel fronts without going all the way into the centre.

The drawback is transport. If you only have two nights and a long list of churches, markets and museums to visit, I’d choose a central hotel instead. In winter, it’s also worth asking yourself how much you’ll actually use the beach.

For a summer holiday with children, however, the location can be practical. Compare family rooms and any pool facilities carefully. A hotel near the sand doesn’t necessarily have a pool, and a sea view needs to be specified in the room category you book.

Places to Stay in Cabanyal and Las Arenas

Las Arenas Balneario Resort – luxury

Las Arenas Balneario Resort is a five-star beachfront hotel with pools, gardens and a spa. It’s the hotel in this selection I’d consider for a holiday where you also want to spend part of the day enjoying the hotel’s facilities. Check seasonal opening dates and access arrangements for the pools and spa during your stay.

Hotel Boutique Balandret – mid-range

Hotel Boutique Balandret is on Paseo de Neptuno and has both sea-view rooms and rooms facing other directions. It suits a beach holiday where you’d like to stay beside the promenade without choosing a large resort. Book a sea-view category if the view is your reason for choosing this hotel.

Sol Playa – budget option

Sol Playa is also on the seafront promenade and is a simpler alternative to the hotels above. It has double rooms and larger room types, so it’s worth comparing prices if there are several of you. I’d choose it for the short walk to the beach and check the specific room category, rather than expecting resort facilities.

Where should you avoid staying in Valencia?

I’d start by avoiding a location that doesn’t suit your holiday. A cheap airport hotel or an address far from the centre can cost you a lot of travel time on a short city break. Check the whole journey to the places you want to visit before being tempted by the price.

If you want early nights, be careful about rooms directly above bars in El Carmen and Ruzafa. This is about the specific address, rather than a reason to rule out the whole neighbourhood.

During Fallas in March, you should also expect fireworks, celebrations and changes to access around the city. Ask your hotel about nearby events if you’re travelling with young children or want quiet nights. A central address can be fantastic for the festivities and impractical for that particular need.

I really like Gracia, but I’ve noticed some misconceptions about it online. Let’s clear those up and give you a real feel for what it’s like to stay there.

Where is Gracia and what is it known for?

From my visits to Barcelona, Gracia always stands out as a neighborhood with its own character.

Once a separate town until Barcelona annexed it in 1897, this district retains a distinct feel with its compact streets and vibrant community squares, such as Plaça de la Virreina and Plaça del Sol​​.

I’ve always enjoyed the laid-back ambiance of Gracia’s many plazas, perfect for sipping coffee or enjoying meals outside.

Where some of the other famous areas of Barcelona can feel a bit over-touristy sometimes, Gracia is still an area where the locals come together and enjoy the many bars and cafés.

If you’re looking to really explore what Barcelona offers beyond the usual tourist spots, Gracia is the place to stay.

It’s just a stone’s throw from Barcelona’s main tourist areas, but it’s totally different from places like the Rambla or the Gothic Quarter.

This part of Barcelona is a haven for anyone in their 20s or 30s – or, frankly, anyone drawn to a more authentic local vibe. Gracia’s lively plazas, quirky shops, and local festivals make it an insider’s gem.

Here, you can blend in with the locals, sip coffee in artsy cafes, and experience Barcelona through the eyes of those who call it home.

As Gracia isn’t one of the main touristy areas in Barcelona, there aren’t many hotels to choose from. But there are some!

So let me share two of my favorite places to stay in Gracia below – the first one even has a swimming pool.

The Catalonia Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Gracia.

This hotel is all about comfort and convenience and is located in the heart of Gracia. What sets this place apart is its lovely swimming pool – a rare find in hotels in this part of Barcelona.

Who should not stay in Gracia?

There might be better choices than Gracia if you’re a typical tourist looking to hit all the major sights effortlessly or if you’re traveling with children. 

The streets of Gracia can be narrow and sometimes hilly, potentially challenging for families with strollers or those who prefer less walking. 

It’s also not the easiest area to get to from Barcelona Airport.

If you come to Barcelona looking for quick, easy access to iconic landmarks and more tourist-oriented services, you might find areas closer to the city center more convenient and accommodating.

1. Serra de Tramuntana – stay close to the beautiful mountains

Mallorca’s magical mountain range, which stretches over 90 km along the west coast, is a must-see for nature lovers and a gem on the island that should be experienced.

It is also here in the area that the popular tourist area of Sóller is located.

Suppose you are looking for a holiday full of hiking and nature experiences. In that case, this is the perfect place to stay in Mallorca.

The mountain range covers 30% of the island’s total area and has 11 great mountain peaks that reach over 1000 m in height.

In 2011 Serra de Tramuntana was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Fantastic mountain routes in the Serra de Tramuntana

Most people associate a holiday in Mallorca with sun and sandy beaches, but if you want to travel to this area, the mountain range can be just as great an experience in the slightly cooler months.

In winter, you can also see the many beautiful almond trees in bloom.

The area offers spectacular views over the coast, where the deep blue colour of the sky stands out in harmony with the sea’s surface, almost deserted walking paths, the scent of citrus fruits and century-old olive trees.

You don’t have to be a professional hiker to experience some routes, although it is a good idea if you don’t fear heights.

The towns in the mountain area are a whole chapter in themselves. 

Although there are only a few hundred inhabitants in several towns, there is still life. Weekly markets are held in several places with local produce, and each town has its attractions.

Stay in the artist town of Deiá

Something else unique in Deiá is the town’s many watchtowers, which were built in the 16th century to prevent pirates from going ashore.

The small town with 850 inhabitants also has a lot to offer gastronomically. You will find delicious cafes and tapas bars in several places in the city.

The whole area of Palma de Mallorca is the smallest on the island. It only consists of the capital, Palma and the surrounding municipality.

Palma truly is one of Europe’s most incredible cities in miniature format. 

Palma is a bustling city

One of Mallorca’s best-known sights and, therefore, worth a visit when you travel to the Spanish holiday island.

There are actually no limits to what you can experience in Palma. There are several museums in the old town of Casco Antiguo, but this is also where you will find the exclusive shopping street Jaime III.

The harbour promenade in Palma runs from the centre and 4 km to the shopping centre in Porto Pi. You will find many bars and discotheques along the promenade that kick off the nightlife.

To experience a bit of idyll, visit Es Portixol, a small fishing harbour to the east of the city centre in Palma.

You can hardly visit Palma without stopping by La Seu Cathedral, which the artist and architect Gaudi (who we know from Barcelona too) simplified 100 years ago. Here you will find one of the world’s largest rose windows, with more than 12,000 pieces of coloured glass.

Le Seu is the city’s trademark and pride, a piece of history you must experience if you spend your holiday in the Palma area.

Gastronomically, there are also plenty of experiences in the capital where delicious Mediterranean cuisine with lots of fish and shellfish, delicious vegetables and olive oil play a prominent role.

The tapas bars are side by side, but if you are into the more familiar fast food, there is plenty of that too.

3. Plá de Mallorca – stay in the middle of the island

You’ll find the area called the granary of Mallorca in the middle of the island.

Most of the island’s agricultural products, such as maize, potatoes and rice, are grown in this area. Here you will also find beautiful wine plantations and plantations with almond trees.

The area is sparsely populated compared to the rest of the island and characterized by rustic manor houses and iconic mills.

Can Picafort – best place to stay for families with children

You find the most tourists at Can Picafort, next to Alcudiá Bay, with kilometres of white sandy beaches. It is precisely the coastal areas that attract most travellers.

Can Picafort is a small resort town located in the beautiful Alcudia Bay. Located about 45 km northeast of Palma, it offers stunning views and miles of beaches and crystal-clear waters.

The resort features quiet and peaceful beaches and several restaurants and bars catering to different types of cuisine.

Can Picafort’s idyllic location also offers many tourist activities, including boat tours, scuba diving, walking trails, and other coastal activities like beach volleyball and kayaking.

I was there as a child and loved it, so it’s also a great place to stay in Mallorca with children.

Recommendation: stay in a Spanish finca with a pool

You can hardly do anything but stay authentically on a Spanish finca.

A finca can be described as a farm ranging from a small private one-family farm to large manor houses with several rooms.

Regardless, you will experience staying in a more ordinary home than a large modern hotel.

At this finca in Porreres, there is plenty of rural idyll and relaxing surroundings, but at the same time, a little luxury in the form of a pool and the possibility of restaurant visits.

4. Raiguer – stay close to the best of both worlds

Raiguer is the most versatile area of Mallorca; the area borders the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range on one side, the flat landscape of Plá de Mallorca on the other, and borders right down to the region of Palma.

If you want to spend your holiday experiencing the versatile regions of Mallorca and enjoy city life, the beautiful beaches, the view from the mountains, and the rural atmosphere, staying in Raigur is a good starting point.

The town of Inca is incredible

The town of Inca is well known for its production of leather goods. Several well-known shoe brands are actually manufactured here. If you want to experience fantastic craftsmanship, the city is worth visiting.

In addition, the city is full of atmosphere and offers some of Mallorca’s best restaurants.

Every Thursday morning, a large market is held in the town, offering everything from fruit and vegetables to souvenirs, jewellery and, of course, lots of leather goods.

It is certainly not too little to set aside three hours to visit the large, brightly coloured market.

If you want to stay near the city but at the same time enjoy the tranquillity and experience Mallorca’s more rural sides, then Sa Vinya des Convent is an absolutely fantastic place to stay.

5. Migjorn – best place to stay for the best beaches

Migjorn to the south is a popular destination for the many guests looking for a fantastic (almost) Caribbean beach experience with white sand and crystal clear water.

Migjorn is an extension of Plá de Mallorca and is a plain-like area still very much characterized by agriculture.

However, it is here in the area that we find some of the best beaches in Mallorca, so if you are looking for the perfect place for a relaxing beach holiday, you can book the hotel here in Migjorn.

Since, as mentioned, most guests visit this part to experience the beautiful beaches, below are 3 suggestions for good beaches.

3 best beaches on Mallorca’s south coast

Es Trenc

The beach is located in a nature reserve and is therefore well preserved. The water is shallow all along Es Trenc, which stretches over 2 km, making it a very child-friendly beach.

There are several marked places for naturists along the beach, although most visitors still wear swimwear. However, visiting the beach can be an expensive pleasure, as you already have to pay the first 7 euros at the car park, just to park the car.

Es Caragol

To get to this beach, you must walk 1.5 km on a rough path, but it’s beautiful and definitely worth it. The 450 m long beach lies relatively undisturbed; there are no facilities such as beach bars, deck chairs and the like, only the fine sand and the sea that sparkles in beautiful blue and turquoise colours.

The nearest town is 7 km away, and there are no hotels or anything else in the area.

Cala Lombards

This beautiful beach is in a small bay surrounded by high rocks and pine trees. The beach is a little small, and it can quickly fill up in high season.

The clear water is ideal for snorkelling, but families with children also like this area because of the fine sand and shallow water.

The nearby holiday town is a quiet residential area mainly consisting of villas. The nearest restaurant is approx. 1 km away from the bay, so bringing your own food may be a good idea.

The prices in the only beach bar selling drinks and snacks are relatively high.

In this guide, I’ll provide you with all the necessary details for your journey, including bus, train, metro, taxi, and pre-booked taxi options.

I’ve been traveling to Barcelona every year for the past 3 years (and I’ve got a trip planned for this year, too) so I know the airport and the city very well.

Barcelona’s main airport, where you’ll land, is called Barcelona-El Prat Airport and it’s located very near the city itself:

This guide is designed to make your transition from landing at Barcelona Airport to reaching your hotel in the city center as smooth as possible.

Let me help you navigate your way from Barcelona Airport to the city center without any unnecessary detours.

Aerobus – the official airport express bus

Taking the Aerobus from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to the city center is a swift and cost-effective option.

This shuttle service, with lines A1 and A2, ensures a smooth 35-minute ride to the heart of Barcelona, costing only 7.50€ for a one-way ticket.

The A1 Aerobus departs from Terminal 1, while the A2 starts at Terminal 2.

Locating the Aerobus stops at Barcelona Airport is straightforward.

At Terminal T1, the Aerobus stop is conveniently situated one floor below the arrivals hall. To reach it, simply walk to the lower level of the arrivals terminal.

Once there, turn left towards a descending ramp, and you’ll find yourself directly in front of the Aerobus stop.

If you’re arriving at Terminal T2, the process is equally simple. As you exit the arrivals hall, the Aerobus stop is located to the left.

Where does the bus stop?

Each route makes three strategic stops in Barcelona:

• Plaça Espanya
• Gran Via-Urgell
• Plaça de l’Universitat
• The final stop at Plaça Catalunya (in the heart of Barcelona)

Bus schedule

These buses run daily all year round, including holidays.

Both services operates from 5:35 am to 1:05 am, and from Plaça Catalunya, for the return journey, it runs from 5:00 am to 12:30 am.

The frequency is every 10 minutes early in the morning and late at night, and every 5 minutes during the peak hours of 6:50 am to 9:45 pm.

Airport express bus tickets

Purchasing Aerobus tickets is straightforward. While you can buy them at the airport terminals or directly from the bus driver, I highly recommend purchasing them online to avoid delays, especially during busy periods.

For families traveling with young ones, it’s good to know that children under four travel for free.

Using the Aerobus is a convenient way to navigate directly from Barcelona Airport to the city center, especially if you want to save time and avoid the complexity of multiple transfers.

Taxi – the easiest & fastest way option to your hotel

When I arrive in Barcelona and need to get straight to my hotel or I’m tired from travelling, I’ll get a taxi.

Taking a taxi from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a straightforward and quick option, particularly suitable for groups of at least two people or families.

It combines the ease of door-to-door service with the efficiency of direct travel. The taxi points are prominently located at the exits of Terminals T1 and T2, with abundant taxis available.

The well-organized queue system reflects Barcelona’s general approach to public services.

Taxi prices from Barcelona Airport

Unlike some cities, there’s no fixed fare from the airport to the city center. The minimum charge for any taxi trip originating from the airport is 20€, which includes all additional fees like the airport surcharge of 3.10€.

This means the fare will be at least 20€, even for nearby destinations.

Be aware that night rates apply from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, which might affect the overall fare.

A taxi ride to the city center typically takes 20 to 25 minutes, with the cost generally ranging between 30-35€, depending on your terminal of departure and exact destination.

Pre-booked taxi with English speaking driver

For those seeking a more predictable experience, pre-booking a taxi can be a great alternative.

Companies like Welcome Pickups offer services where all drivers speak English, removing any language barrier and adding a layer of certainty to your journey.

I’ve used Welcome Pickups all over Europe and have had great experiences. They’re always on time and drive very well.

This can be especially comforting if you’re new to the city or traveling with family and prefer to have a smooth, pre-arranged transportation option right from the airport.

The prices depend on your destination, but you’ll know it when you book online.

For example, a ride from the airport to a hotel on the Rambla will cost €39.

Renfe – train to the city center in 30 mins

A slightly cheaper option is by train.

Taking the train from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a highly efficient and economical option.

With a single journey costing only 5.15€, it is a budget-friendly mode of transport.

Here’s what you should know:

Terminal Access

The train service operates exclusively from Terminal T2. If you arrive at Terminal T1, a free, easily identifiable green shuttle bus will connect you to Terminal T2.

Locating the Train Station

In Terminal T2, follow the clear signage to the Renfe station, Spain’s national railway company. The train station is a mere 3-minute walk from the terminal.

Barcelona City Stops

Running on the R2 North line, the train halts at two central stations in Barcelona: Estació Sants and Passeig de Gràcia.

These stops offer convenient access to various key areas in the city.

Travel Time and Frequency

The trip from T2 to Barcelona city center takes about 30 minutes. Trains operate from 5:42 am to 11:28 pm, approximately every 30 minutes.

For return trips, the first train from Passeig de Gràcia departs at 5:08 am and the last at 11:07 pm, reaching Estació Sants about five minutes later.

Buying Tickets & Hola BCN Card

Tickets are available at the Renfe station in T2, where you can use both ticket machines and staffed counters.

Hola BCN! Card Option

For convenience, consider the Hola BCN! card, which covers your airport to city center transfer and all other public transport within Barcelona.

This card is a practical and cost-effective choice for easily navigating the city. It’s also valid for many of the most famous attractions and things to do in Barcelona.

Metro – public transport from both Terminals

The metro from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a convenient option for travelers.

Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are connected to the metro network via Line 9 (L9 Sud), making transit into the city quite straightforward.

Here’s what you need to know:

Route

While Line 9 directly connects the airport to various parts of Barcelona, it doesn’t go directly downtown.
