In this post, I'll explain what the deal is with Gracia.

Barcelona is a big city, and picking the right area to stay can really make or break your trip.

I’ve been lucky enough to have visited Barcelona four times and gotten to know its different areas quite well (I’m even heading back soon for the Primavera Festival).

But one particular area won my heart a few years back – Gracia, of course.

Kristoffer Fons from Destination Well Known in Barcelona
Yours truly in Park Güell near Gracia.

In this post, I’ll share some personal insights about this place and answer a question many travelers ask: Is Gracia a good place to stay in Barcelona?

I really like Gracia, but I’ve noticed some misconceptions about it online. Let’s clear those up and give you a real feel for what it’s like to stay there.

Where is Gracia and what is it known for?

From my visits to Barcelona, Gracia always stands out as a neighborhood with its own character.

Barcelona Skyline

Once a separate town until Barcelona annexed it in 1897, this district retains a distinct feel with its compact streets and vibrant community squares, such as Plaça de la Virreina and Plaça del Sol.

Plaza in Gracia

I’ve always enjoyed the laid-back ambiance of Gracia’s many plazas, perfect for sipping coffee or enjoying meals outside.

park guell
Park Güell just north of Gracia.

Where some of the other famous areas of Barcelona can feel a bit over-touristy sometimes, Gracia is still an area where the locals come together and enjoy the many bars and cafés.

See the best hotels in Gracia here.

You should also check out my huge guide on the best areas and places to stay in Barcelona for a full rundown of the city’s top areas.

My 5 favourite things to do in Gracia

Food in Barcelona
There are a lot of excellent restaurants in Gracia.

I genuinely believe that Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Barcelona, so here are my five favorite things to do in this lovely area.

Dining at Tapeo Gràcia

This is a must for any food lover. Tapeo Gràcia offers a delightful selection of tapas that are both inventive and deeply rooted in Spanish culinary traditions.

It’s a fantastic spot to dive into dishes like patatas bravas or squid ink croquettes, each bursting with flavor.

Sipping Vermouth at Vermuteria Puigmartí

No visit to Gracia is complete without stopping by Vermuteria Puigmartí. This cozy spot is perfect for enjoying a glass of vermouth, a beloved local aperitif.

Pair your drink with olives or anchovies for a truly authentic experience.

Relaxing at Plaça del Sol

It’s a pleasure just sitting and soaking up the atmosphere at Plaça del Sol. It’s a popular gathering place for locals, often filled with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and occasionally live music.

The plaza’s vibrant scene gives you a genuine feel for Gracia’s everyday life and culture.

Exploring the Artisan Shops

Gracia has so many small, independent shops where local artisans sell their crafts.

From handmade jewelry to bespoke clothing and unique home decor, browsing these shops is not only a way to find one-of-a-kind items but also to support local artists and artisans.

Visiting Casa Vicens

For architecture enthusiasts, Casa Vicens, one of Gaudí’s first major works, is a must-see. This house is less frequented by tourists than other Gaudí buildings in Barcelona, offering a more serene experience.

The design and details of the building reflect the innovative spirit of Gaudí and provide insight into the early stages of his remarkable career in architecture.

Why you should stay in Gracia

travel blogger in Barcelona
I’m always happy in Barcelona 😀

If you’re looking to really explore what Barcelona offers beyond the usual tourist spots, Gracia is the place to stay.

It’s just a stone’s throw from Barcelona’s main tourist areas, but it’s totally different from places like the Rambla or the Gothic Quarter.

Gracia Barcelona
Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Barcelona for younger travelers.

This part of Barcelona is a haven for anyone in their 20s or 30s – or, frankly, anyone drawn to a more authentic local vibe. Gracia’s lively plazas, quirky shops, and local festivals make it an insider’s gem.

Here, you can blend in with the locals, sip coffee in artsy cafes, and experience Barcelona through the eyes of those who call it home.

My 2 favourite places to stay in Gracia

As Gracia isn’t one of the main touristy areas in Barcelona, there aren’t many hotels to choose from. But there are some!

So let me share two of my favorite places to stay in Gracia below – the first one even has a swimming pool.

The Catalonia Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Gracia.

Catalonia Gracia, hotel with pool in Gracia

This hotel is all about comfort and convenience and is located in the heart of Gracia. What sets this place apart is its lovely swimming pool – a rare find in hotels in this part of Barcelona.

Catalonia Gracia, one of the best places to stay in Gracia

With its prime location, you’re just steps away from quirky shops, local eateries, and the dynamic street life that makes Gracia special.

Le Palacete Gracia

You can expect stylish and comfortable rooms, equipped with everything you need for quick visits and extended stays.

Street in Gracia
Get ready to explore the cozy streets of Gracia.

Including a fully equipped kitchen means you can save some money on eating out if you like.

It’s an ideal place to stay if you’re keen to soak up the local culture of Gracia while enjoying upscale, self-sufficient accommodations.

Who should not stay in Gracia?

Barcelona

There might be better choices than Gracia if you’re a typical tourist looking to hit all the major sights effortlessly or if you’re traveling with children.

The streets of Gracia can be narrow and sometimes hilly, potentially challenging for families with strollers or those who prefer less walking.

It’s also not the easiest area to get to from Barcelona Airport.

If you come to Barcelona looking for quick, easy access to iconic landmarks and more tourist-oriented services, you might find areas closer to the city center more convenient and accommodating.

As mentioned earlier, I’ve got another guide that mentions more areas and hotels in Barcelona.

I hope this post convinced to why staying in Gracia is an excellent idea. Let me know if you have any questions about the area or Barcelona in general.

Mallorca has for many years been a preferred holiday destination for tourists from all over the world. This is due to the wonderful climate and the fact that Mallorca is so much more than meets the eye.

You can find everything in Mallorca, whether you are into long mountain walks, the more crowded beaches, historic towns, or charter stays.

In this article, I’ll share 5 beautiful areas in Mallorca, Spain. I’ll also share links for booking good hotels in the mentioned areas.

Where to stay in Mallorca? Let’s get this travel guide started.

The best areas to stay in Mallorca

Click the links above to see the best hotels in the different areas of Mallorca.

Mallorca may not be the biggest island in the Mediterranean, but the landscape, the cities and the population are as varied as if you travelled to a large country.

Therefore, you can have completely different experiences depending on where you travel and where you stay while you are in Mallorca.

And then let’s get to the guide to the best areas in Mallorca and the hotel recommendations.

I’ve also made a video on 2 of the best areas in Mallorca:

1. Serra de Tramuntana – stay close to the beautiful mountains ⛰

Mallorca’s magical mountain range, which stretches over 90 km along the west coast, is a must-see for nature lovers and a gem on the island that should be experienced.

It is also here in the area that the popular tourist area of Sóller is located.

See the best hotels in Sóller here.

Suppose you are looking for a holiday full of hiking and nature experiences. In that case, this is the perfect place to stay in Mallorca.

Valdemossa in the Serra de Tramuntana area of Mallorca
Valdemossa in the Serra de Tramuntana area of Mallorca

The mountain range covers 30% of the island’s total area and has 11 great mountain peaks that reach over 1000 m in height.

In 2011 Serra de Tramuntana was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Fantastic mountain routes in the Serra de Tramuntana

Most people associate a holiday in Mallorca with sun and sandy beaches, but if you want to travel to this area, the mountain range can be just as great an experience in the slightly cooler months.

In winter, you can also see the many beautiful almond trees in bloom.

The area offers spectacular views over the coast, where the deep blue colour of the sky stands out in harmony with the sea’s surface, almost deserted walking paths, the scent of citrus fruits and century-old olive trees.

You don’t have to be a professional hiker to experience some routes, although it is a good idea if you don’t fear heights.

The towns in the mountain area are a whole chapter in themselves.

Although there are only a few hundred inhabitants in several towns, there is still life. Weekly markets are held in several places with local produce, and each town has its attractions.

Stay in the artist town of Deiá

Something else unique in Deiá is the town’s many watchtowers, which were built in the 16th century to prevent pirates from going ashore.

The small town with 850 inhabitants also has a lot to offer gastronomically. You will find delicious cafes and tapas bars in several places in the city.

See the best hotels and villas in Deiá here.

Hotel recommendation – Hotel Des Puig

Staying in Deia, located at the foot of Teix mountain, gives you the perfect starting point for some beautiful hikes. This hotel is small and idyllic but has everything you need.

There is a pool and fitness centre, wifi and a delicious breakfast buffet, giving you the best start to the day you could wish for.

2. Palma de Mallorca – stay in the capital of the Balearic Islands

The whole area of Palma de Mallorca is the smallest on the island. It only consists of the capital, Palma and the surrounding municipality.

Nevertheless, it is approx. half of the island’s population resides here.

See the best hotels in Palma de Mallorca here.

Palma truly is one of Europe’s most incredible cities in miniature format.

Palma is a bustling city

Palma de Mallorca

One of Mallorca’s best-known sights and, therefore, worth a visit when you travel to the Spanish holiday island.

There are actually no limits to what you can experience in Palma. There are several museums in the old town of Casco Antiguo, but this is also where you will find the exclusive shopping street Jaime III.

The harbour promenade in Palma runs from the centre and 4 km to the shopping centre in Porto Pi. You will find many bars and discotheques along the promenade that kick off the nightlife.

To experience a bit of idyll, visit Es Portixol, a small fishing harbour to the east of the city centre in Palma.

You can hardly visit Palma without stopping by La Seu Cathedral, which the artist and architect Gaudi (who we know from Barcelona too) simplified 100 years ago. Here you will find one of the world’s largest rose windows, with more than 12,000 pieces of coloured glass.

Le Seu is the city’s trademark and pride, a piece of history you must experience if you spend your holiday in the Palma area.

Gastronomically, there are also plenty of experiences in the capital where delicious Mediterranean cuisine with lots of fish and shellfish, delicious vegetables and olive oil play a prominent role.

The tapas bars are side by side, but if you are into the more familiar fast food, there is plenty of that too.

Suppose you are more curious about the food and the ingredients – visiting the market halls for the weekly food market is worth spending time on.

Check out my video where I share some great places in Palma:

3. Plá de Mallorca – stay in the middle of the island

You’ll find the area called the granary of Mallorca in the middle of the island.

Most of the island’s agricultural products, such as maize, potatoes and rice, are grown in this area. Here you will also find beautiful wine plantations and plantations with almond trees.

The area is sparsely populated compared to the rest of the island and characterized by rustic manor houses and iconic mills.

Can Picafort – best place to stay for families with children

You find the most tourists at Can Picafort, next to Alcudiá Bay, with kilometres of white sandy beaches. It is precisely the coastal areas that attract most travellers.

Recommendation: stay in a Spanish finca with a pool

You can hardly do anything but stay authentically on a Spanish finca.

stay in a finca in Mallorca

A finca can be described as a farm ranging from a small private one-family farm to large manor houses with several rooms.

stay in a finca in Mallorca

Regardless, you will experience staying in a more ordinary home than a large modern hotel.

At this finca in Porreres, there is plenty of rural idyll and relaxing surroundings, but at the same time, a little luxury in the form of a pool and the possibility of restaurant visits.

4. Raiguer – stay close to the best of both worlds

Raiguer is the most versatile area of Mallorca; the area borders the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range on one side, the flat landscape of Plá de Mallorca on the other, and borders right down to the region of Palma.

If you want to spend your holiday experiencing the versatile regions of Mallorca and enjoy city life, the beautiful beaches, the view from the mountains, and the rural atmosphere, staying in Raigur is a good starting point.

The town of Inca is incredible

The town of Inca is well known for its production of leather goods. Several well-known shoe brands are actually manufactured here. If you want to experience fantastic craftsmanship, the city is worth visiting.

Check out the best hotels in Inca.

In addition, the city is full of atmosphere and offers some of Mallorca’s best restaurants.

Every Thursday morning, a large market is held in the town, offering everything from fruit and vegetables to souvenirs, jewellery and, of course, lots of leather goods.

It is certainly not too little to set aside three hours to visit the large, brightly coloured market.

5. Migjorn – best place to stay for the best beaches 🏖

Migjorn to the south is a popular destination for the many guests looking for a fantastic (almost) Caribbean beach experience with white sand and crystal clear water.

Migjorn is an extension of Plá de Mallorca and is a plain-like area still very much characterized by agriculture.

However, it is here in the area that we find some of the best beaches in Mallorca, so if you are looking for the perfect place for a relaxing beach holiday, you can book the hotel here in Migjorn.

The link opens hotels in Sa Ràpita, but you could stay anywhere along the southern coast of Mallorca to explore the best beaches on the island.

The hotel boasts elegantly designed rooms that ensure maximum comfort, while the serene pool area provides the perfect relaxing space.

For unparalleled sea views, make your way to the rooftop terrace. The on-site dining options offer delectable cuisine, but you can also explore the nearby marina, which features a range of exquisite restaurants.

Rest assured, a stay at Monsuau Cala D’Or Hotel guarantees a memorable experience.

Since, as mentioned, most guests visit this part to experience the beautiful beaches, below are 3 suggestions for good beaches.

3 best beaches on Mallorca’s south coast

Es Trenc

The beach is located in a nature reserve and is therefore well preserved. The water is shallow all along Es Trenc, which stretches over 2 km, making it a very child-friendly beach.

There are several marked places for naturists along the beach, although most visitors still wear swimwear. However, visiting the beach can be an expensive pleasure, as you already have to pay the first 7 euros at the car park, just to park the car.

Es Caragol

To get to this beach, you must walk 1.5 km on a rough path, but it’s beautiful and definitely worth it. The 450 m long beach lies relatively undisturbed; there are no facilities such as beach bars, deck chairs and the like, only the fine sand and the sea that sparkles in beautiful blue and turquoise colours.

The nearest town is 7 km away, and there are no hotels or anything else in the area.

Cala Lombards

This beautiful beach is in a small bay surrounded by high rocks and pine trees. The beach is a little small, and it can quickly fill up in high season.

The clear water is ideal for snorkelling, but families with children also like this area because of the fine sand and shallow water.

The nearby holiday town is a quiet residential area mainly consisting of villas. The nearest restaurant is approx. 1 km away from the bay, so bringing your own food may be a good idea.

The prices in the only beach bar selling drinks and snacks are relatively high.

I hope this guide helped you and that you now know where to stay in Mallorca. If you’ve got any questions about the areas or hotels in Mallorca, please comment below and I’ll do my best to help.

Frequently asked questions about Mallorca:

Where are the best beaches in Mallorca?

Mallorca is known for its beautiful beaches, and there are several popular choices. Playa de Muro could be the right choice for a family-friendly beach with clear water and calm waves.

Cala Agulla is another beautiful bay surrounded by pine trees and crystal-clear water. If you want to experience the natural beauty of Mallorca, Es Trenc, with its white sand and turquoise water, can be a good choice.

For a peaceful day at the beach in a nature reserve, Cala Mondragó is recommended with its rocks and pine trees all around. And if you want to visit a pristine beach in a secluded area, Cala Varques can be the perfect place with its clear waters and caves to explore.

How many days should you spend in Mallorca?

I’ve discovered that the perfect trip to this Mediterranean paradise lasts anywhere between 5-7 days. With its stunning beaches, charming villages, and vibrant culture, you’ll have plenty of time to explore the island’s must-see attractions while enjoying well-deserved relaxation. Let’s dive into my 7-day Mallorca itinerary for first-time visitors.

Remember, this 7-day Mallorca itinerary is just my suggestion for those who are going for the first time. Feel free to tailor your trip to your interests, whether it’s lounging on sun-kissed beaches, hiking rugged mountain trails, or indulging in exhilarating water sports. No matter how you spend your time in Mallorca, you’re sure to create unforgettable memories on this captivating island.

Is Alcudia a good place to stay with children?

Yes, Alcudia is a great place to stay with children. The town has a long sandy beach, Playa de Alcudia, which is very child-friendly and flat. Plenty of space for the children to play and build sandcastles, and the water is calm and clear. There are also many outdoor activities for children, including water sports such as kayaking and windsurfing, a miniature golf course and a water park. Alcudia also has a beautiful old town with winding streets and historical monuments that can be interesting for the whole family to explore.

Is Palma de Mallorca a good place to stay?

Palma is a fantastic city to stay in. It is the capital of Mallorca and has a vibrant cultural life, good restaurants and bars, shopping opportunities and a beautiful old town with an impressive cathedral. The city also has many parks and green spaces, including Bellver Forest, perfect for walks or picnics with family and friends. There are also many beaches near Palma, such as Cala Major and Illetas, which can be reached by public transport or car. Overall, Palma is a lovely place to stay for people of all ages, with lots of activities to do.

Do you need a car in Mallorca?

While having a car in Mallorca can certainly enhance your travel experience, it’s not an absolute necessity. Renting a car is a great idea if you want the freedom and flexibility to explore the island at your own pace, especially when visiting remote beaches, charming villages, and scenic viewpoints.

However, if you prefer not to drive, Mallorca’s public transportation system is a viable alternative for getting around the island. The bus network, operated by TIB (Transport de les Illes Balears), connects many towns and popular tourist destinations. The island also offers a few train routes, such as the vintage train from Palma to Sóller, which provides a unique and picturesque journey through the mountains.

Another option is joining organized tours or excursions that cover specific attractions or areas of interest. This can be a convenient and stress-free way to visit popular sights without the hassle of driving and parking.

Barcelona has hit me right in the heart, like so many other travellers who make a pilgrimage to the famous city on the Spanish coast every year.

I have now been to Barcelona two summers in a row and must admit that I love the city.

Barcelona, however, is a vast city, and it’s essential to know a bit about the many different areas of town before booking a hotel.

Kristoffer from Destination Well Known in Barcelona
Me in Barcelona, May 2024

So after this brief introduction, I will dive into the best areas to stay in Barcelona and recommend some great hotels.

Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain (surpassed only by the capital Madrid), the prices for food and drink are low, and Barcelona is right next to the coast, so you can combine a city break with a beach holiday.

h10 hotel barcelona city centre
The view from the rooftop pool at the fantastic H10 Hotel Cubik in Barcelona.

In other words, Barcelona is something close to the perfect destination. But where should one choose to book a hotel in a city with a good size and is visited by countless tourists every year?

We look at this in more detail in the guide on where to stay in Barcelona.

Best areas to stay in Barcelona

Click the links above to see the best places to stay in the given area. The guide on where to stay in Barcelona continues below.

1. The Gothic Quarter – the best area in Barcelona ⭐

I love the Gothic Quarter in Barcelona. It might be a bit touristy, but the best areas of the big cities in Europe always are.

It makes sense: the tourists want to see the best places, and in Barcelona, the best area is, in my opinion, The Gothic Quarter.

gothic quarter
Yours truly in the Gothic Quarter back in 2020 when face masks were a big hit for some weird reason 😀

This is an area that, on my first visit, made me think of the cosy, narrow streets in Prague, Covent Garden in London or Edinburgh‘s Old Town.

See the best hotels in the Gothic Quarter here.

Walking around the Gothic Quarter, you don’t feel like you’re in a big city but instead in a movie set for a film that takes place in the Middle Ages. And I mean that in the best way possible.

This is a unique area where tourist shops lie alongside local art museums, ancient churches and cosy restaurants with fantastic food at low prices.

It must be said that the Gothic Quarter is on every tourist’s “must-see” list when visiting Barcelona so you won’t have the area to yourself.

Gothic Quarter in Barcelona

But you won’t get that anywhere in Barcelona, so why not stay in the heart of the best area?

This is the old town of Barcelona, so there is no Holiday Inn on every street corner, and if you’re booking your Barcelona hotel last minute, you might be unlucky searching in The Gothic Quarter.

However, I think it is a good benchmark for where to stay in Barcelona – if you are within 5-10 minutes walking distance of the Gothic Quarter, then you know your hotel is centrally located.

From The Gothic Quarter, it is a 15-25 minute walk to the beach depending on where you are.

Places to stay in The Gothic Quarter

There are quite a few places to stay in The Gothic Quarter, but here are a few of my favourite hotels in three different price ranges.

Ohla Barcelona is a five-star luxury hotel offering a premium experience in the city’s heart.

Ohla Barcelona, best place to stay in Barcelona gothic quarter
One of the best hotels with a rooftop pool in Barcelona

Its biggest draw is the spectacular rooftop terrace with a swimming pool, from which guests can enjoy an unrivalled view of the city’s skyline.

The hotel’s modern, stylish rooms are all equipped with luxury amenities.

ohla barcelona room

In the heart of The Gothic Quarter, Ohla Barcelona is close to major tourist attractions, gourmet restaurants, and high-end shopping areas.

Its dedicated staff is known for their attention to detail, and they are always ready to accommodate the guests’ needs, ensuring a stay of the highest standard.

I had had my eyes on the H10 Cubik hotel for a few years, and in May 2024, I finally got to stay there when I was in Barcelona for the Primavera Festival.

H10 Cubik rooftop pool

The hotel’s location is pretty much perfect: it’s 50 metres from a metro station and just a 5-minute walk from the Barcelona Cathedral and the Gothic Quarter.

The room was spacious and modern – as expected from a 4-star hotel.

However, the breakfast and the incredible rooftop bar with the little swimming pool made the hotel stand out from the other lovely places in Barcelona.

Getting an ice-cold beer and looking out over the Barcelona skyline was one of my highlights of the trip (btw, May is an excellent month to visit Barcelona).

h10 cubik breakfast

The breakfast area is nice as well and for the first time ever, I experienced a little pick-and-mix candy set up at the breakfast buffet 😀

They may have some pretty epic hotel breakfasts in Bangkok, but I’ve never experienced candy as part of the breakfast buffet before 😎

All in all – a very good place to stay in the heart of Barcelona.

And now let’s look at another excellent area in Barcelona’s city centre.

2. Plaça de Catalunya – stay right in the centre 🏪

If we have to talk about another landmark for where to choose to stay in Barcelona, then it must be Plaça de Catalunya.

In other words, this is the centre of Barcelona, so if you book a hotel close to Plaça de Catalunya and want to stay within walking distance of many of the popular things to do in Barcelona, then you’ve made the right choice.

At Plaça de Catalunya, the legendary Rambla starts and stretches down towards the harbour.

See the best hotels around Plaça de Catalunya here.

So if you want to stay in the centre of Barcelona close to attractions, shopping opportunities and, among other things, you could quickly get from Barcelona Airport to the city centre – Plaça de Catalunya is a perfect choice.

It is about a 30-minute walk from Plaça de Catalunya to the beach, but the walk goes through cosy streets and the Gothic Quarter, so it’s a great walk – or a short taxi ride if you’ve had too much sun and want to get straight back to your hotel after a day at the beach 😀

This is also an excellent area to stay in if you travel to Barcelona with children.

Places to stay in Plaça de Catalunya

Let’s look at some good places to stay near Plaça de Catalunya and La Rambla.

3. Gràcia – the best place to stay for a bohemian vibe 👩🏻‍🎨

While the first two areas have been classic places to stay in Barcelona, we now jump to a slightly different area – Gràcia.

Gràcia is an area that continues to be referred to as a bohemian area of Barcelona without tourists.

This is no longer the case, as any self-respecting travel blogger has now visited Gràcia and written about it (myself included).

Still, there is no doubt a different atmosphere than in the more classic tourist areas.

See the best hotels in Gràcia here.

I loved the atmosphere, cosy streets, local bars and restaurants around Plaza del Sol.

It is perhaps an area you should stay in when you have been to Barcelona a few times and now want to get a little more under the city’s skin.

If it’s your first trip to Barcelona, I’d probably still recommend one of the other areas on the list, where you’ll be closer to the sights and the beach – but consider Gràcia if you want to experience a different side of Barcelona and still be relatively close to the centre 🙌🏻

I’ve got another post called “Is Gracia a good place to stay in Barcelona?“, but the short answer is a massive yes!

4. La Barceloneta – stay right by the beach 🏖

Another area that could interest you who travel to Barcelona to enjoy the city’s beaches is La Barceloneta.

Barcelona has several beaches, but the most famous (and closest to the city) is called Barceloneta.

barceloneta beach
Your travel blogger enjoying the sun at Barceloneta Beach.

The area next to the beach is called La Barceloneta and is excellent!

There are, of course, lots of tourists here, but this part of town has a unique and somewhat local atmosphere. Not having been to South America, I got South American vibes for some reason – in a good way.

See the best hotels in La Barceloneta here.

Get a taste of the area for yourself in the video here:

The area is packed with restaurants, cafes, bars and, of course, beach clubs down by the beach.

The main reason to stay here in the La Barceloneta area is that you are only a small stroll from Barcelona’s famous beach. But you are also very close to the Gothic Quarter and the next place on the list (El Born).

So if you can find a good hotel deal here in La Barceloneta and know that it’s only a 20-25 minute walk to the Rambla, then this will be an excellent place to stay in Barcelona.

Especially if you expect to spend a lot of time on the beach! 🏖🍹

Places to stay in La Barceloneta

If you dream of a beach holiday in Barcelona, then, of course, you should stay in La Barceloneta. Below I have found some of the best hotels in the area down to the beach in Barcelona.

5. El Born – best place to stay for nightlife 😎

El Born, situated just northwest of La Barceloneta and east of the Gothic Quarter, is an exciting part of Barcelona teeming with history and cultural activities.

So, whether you choose El Born or the Gothic Quarter for your stay doesn’t make much of a difference, as both areas are brimming with cultural treasures waiting to be explored.

El Born is a hub of nightlife activity, often buzzing with life well into the wee hours. It’s essential to remember this when planning your stay, especially if you are travelling with children.

However, if you’re a group of friends looking for an exciting base to explore Barcelona, El Born could fit the bill.

El Born has a rich history, and you can find traces of it in the architecture of the buildings, the layout of the streets, and the many museums in the area.

Where to avoid in Barcelona?

Barcelona gets a bad rep, but personally, I’ve never felt unsafe here. However, if you want to be on the safe side, there are some areas you should probably avoid.

El Raval:

Located adjacent to La Rambla, El Raval is known for its vibrant cultural scene but has a reputation for higher crime rates, particularly at night. Visitors have reported issues such as pickpocketing and drug-related activities. If you visit, please watch and avoid poorly lit streets after dark.

La Barceloneta Beach at Night

La Barceloneta is a popular beach area frequented by tourists and locals alike. While it’s generally safe during the day, the beach and its surroundings can become less secure after dark, with increased reports of theft and other petty crimes. It’s best to avoid the beach area late at night, especially if you’re alone.

El Besòs i el Maresme

This neighbourhood, located in the Sant Martí district, has been associated with higher crime rates and is less frequented by tourists. It’s advisable to avoid this area, especially at night, as it lacks the safety and amenities found in more central neighbourhoods.

There’s no point in visiting El Besòs i el Maresme as a tourist, but I just wanted to include it in the guide – if you see a cheap hotel out there, don’t book it 😉

I hope you could use this travel guide to find a place to stay in Barcelona and that you are now ready to book your hotel in the fantastic city.

If you have any questions about Barcelona, please leave a comment below.

FAQ:

Where to stay in Barcelona first time?

I’d recommend staying in the city centre on your first trip to Barcelona. Look for hotels in areas such as The Gothic Quarter or close to Placa Catalunya, and you’ll be within walking distance of many of the best things to do in Barcelona.

Where to stay in Barcelona for a romantic trip?

The best hotel for a romantic stay in Barcelona is H10 Cubik which is centrally located and has a rooftop terrace with a pool and bar.

Is it safe to stay in La Rambla?

La Rambla is not an area but a street in downtown Barcelona. It’s one of the most famous streets and places in general in Barcelona, and therefore, it attracts pickpockets and scammers late at night. I would not classify La Rambla as unsafe, but you should have your wits about you in the area if you’re out late at night.

Is Barcelona a walkable city?

Yes! Barcelona is one of the best cities in Europe if you enjoy walking and getting a feel for the city. There aren’t too many hills and plenty of pedestrianised areas.

As part of the Canary Islands, Lanzarote is one of the best travel destinations in Europe – all year round.

Lanzarote is a fantastic destination where you can experience the most beautiful landscapes and beautiful beaches. The island is geared towards tourism, so it is a very easy place to go on holiday.

I have been to Lanzarote several times in the winter, and I must admit that I love the island.

Kristoffer Fons from Destination Well Known in Lanzarote

I’m also a big fan of Tenerife, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, but I really liked Lanzarote on my last trip there.

In this guide, I will talk about the best areas to stay in Lanzarote and describe hotels in different price ranges.

Whether you want a child-friendly beach holiday in a popular holiday town or stay in a slightly more unknown part of the island, there is a place in Lanzarote for you.

So let’s start with the guide: where to stay in Lanzarote?

Best areas in Lanzarote

If you just want a quick overview, here are the best areas to stay in Lanzarote:

Click on the area name above and see the best hotels.

The guide on where to stay in Lanzarote continues below with more info on each area & my recommended hotels.

1. Puerto del Carmen – best all-round holiday area ⭐

Puerto del Carmen is the best place to stay in Lanzarote for travellers looking for a classic holiday town with good beaches, a good selection of hotels in different price ranges and plenty of restaurants and bars.

Long Beach in Lanzarote's Puerto del Carmen
The beach bar ‘Long Beach Club Lanzarote’ is a nice place to relax with a drink.

I stayed here on my last trip to Lanzarote and was surprisingly happy with the area.

The city is very similar to a classic European tourist area, packed with Irish pubs, Spanish and international restaurants, and lots of small shops.

But if you scratch the surface a little, you can also find really good restaurants with local charm.

Puerto del Carmen, best area to stay in Lanzarote

The large Playa Grande is a surprisingly good sandy beach. Since the water is relatively shallow, it is also very child-friendly. Along the seafront, you will find plenty of restaurants, shops, and bars.

See the best hotels in Puerto del Carmen here.

If you go further into the city, you can go to the old town, where I also spent a lot of time.

Here, we find, among other things, the somewhat smaller, very cosy Playa Chica – a little hidden gem where many locals enjoy the cosy surroundings and swim.

The old town’s harbour is also an excellent place to enjoy a cold drink, and I recommend following the sea to the west, where you can walk along a path to the neighbouring town of Puerto Calero.

Puerto del carmen old town harbour

Overall, Puerto del Carmen is the best all-around holiday area in Lanzarote if you’re looking for a great place to stay. There are lots of things within walking distance and several good beaches.

Lanzarote Airport is also only a 10-15 minute drive from Puerto del Carmen, so it’s easy to get straight from the plane to the beach.

In Puerto del Carmen I can, among other things, recommend:

 • La Cascada – excellent restaurant with fantastic meat dishes
 • El Laurel – cosy little tapas bar with cheap dishes close to Playa Chica
 • Restaurante Go Chow Mein – really good Asian restaurant with nice waiters
 • Long Beach Club Lanzarote – a beach bar that is elevated above the beach, so you have a great view of the city’s large beach

Places to stay in Puerto del Carmen

There’s a wide selection of hotels in Puerto del Carmen, but here are a few of my favourites.

Hotel Fariones is a luxury hotel with an exceptional location in the heart of Puerto del Carmen. Here, you can enjoy a private, small beach, creating an intimate and tranquil atmosphere.

I had all-inclusive, which can always be a bit hit-and-miss when it comes to the food, but I actually thought the food was quite excellent here at the hotel.

Costa Teguise is also a great starting point for exploring the rest of Lanzarote, with short drives to the island’s attractions such as Timanfaya National Park and Jameos del Agua.

And with Lanzarote Airport only a 15-minute drive away, it’s easy to get from the plane to the holiday paradise.

3. Playa Blanca – peaceful holiday area with great beaches & nature

Playa Blanca is the best place to stay if you’re looking for a peaceful holiday area on Lanzarote with beautiful beaches and stunning nature.

Playa Blanca, best area for a peaceful holiday near beaches and nature

The town is known for its relaxed atmosphere and fantastic views over the Atlantic Ocean. It’s also where you can catch the ferry to Fuerteventura, which takes you to the charming harbour town of Corralejo.

The beaches here are among the best on the island, especially Playa Dorada, with its fine sand and crystal-clear water, perfect for a relaxing day in the sun.

Playa Flamingo is another gem, suitable for families with its shallow water and calm waves.

See the best hotels in Playa Blanca here.

Playa Blanca also has a charming town centre with cosy restaurants and cafes along the promenade. It’s a perfect place to enjoy a romantic dinner with views of the sunset.

One of the biggest advantages of staying in Playa Blanca is the easy access to some of Lanzarote’s most spectacular natural areas.

From the town, you can take a short boat trip to the nearby island of Isla de Lobos or explore the fantastic landscape in Los Ajaches National Park.

Papagayo Beach in Lanzarote

It’s also worth visiting the famous Papagayo beaches, known for their unspoiled beauty.

Iberostar Selection Lanzarote Park is a large luxury hotel in Playa Blanca with a wealth of pools and facilities.

The hotel has modern rooms with sea views and offers a wide range of activities for both adults and children.

You can enjoy several restaurants, a spa, and a fitness centre, making it an ideal choice for a relaxing and entertaining holiday.

4. Punta Mujeres – charming little fishing village with local life

Punta Mujeres is one of the hidden gems on Lanzarote, a charming little fishing village that offers an authentic glimpse into the local life on the island.

If you’re looking for a unique and charming experience away from the more touristy areas, Punta Mujeres is the place to stay.

The town’s small, white houses and winding streets give an impression of the real Lanzarote, and the local charm is easy to be captivated by.

See the best hotels in Punta Mujeres.

One of the highlights of Punta Mujeres is the natural sea pools, which offer a refreshing dip in the clear water.

It’s a popular activity among both locals and visitors, and it’s an experience not to be missed. Along the coast, there are also small, cosy beaches where you can relax in the sun.

Punta Mujeres is a good starting point for hiking along the coast, where you can experience the island’s raw and untouched nature.

You can also rent a car and drive north to places like Playa De Orzola and Mirador del Río.

In general, there are just so many scenic places in the northern part of Lanzarote.

Punta Mujeres is the perfect choice for an authentic and relaxing holiday experience on Lanzarote, away from the more commercial areas.

Places to stay in Punta Mujeres

Because Punta Mujeres isn’t one of the major tourist areas, there aren’t many hotels here.

However, there is a good selection of holiday apartments, so let’s look at three great places to stay in Punta Mujeres.

Rocamar Sol y Mar is a cosy apartment located close to the sea in Punta Mujeres – and this is a holiday apartment with its own private pool.

Rocamar Sol y Mar

You can expect a fully equipped kitchen, a balcony with sea views, and comfortable rooms.

The apartment is ideal for those who want to experience local life and have easy access to the nearby natural sea pools.

Where Not to Stay in Lanzarote

Lanzarote

Unlike other times when I write these “where to stay” travel guides, there are actually no dangerous areas in Lanzarote.

So if you happen to book a hotel in one of the areas below, it’s not because it’s dangerous – but there are a few places I wouldn’t recommend staying.

Arrecife

Although Arrecife is the capital of Lanzarote, it is different from a typical tourist area. The city lacks the tourist-friendly infrastructure and amenities found in the more popular holiday towns.

There are fewer beaches and attractions than other parts of the island, making it less attractive for those seeking a traditional holiday experience.

Puerto Calero

The area is primarily known for its marina and has limited beach access. It can be a quiet place with few activities and attractions unless you have a car to explore more of the island.

It is not ideal for those seeking a lively atmosphere or family-friendly activities.

Matagorda

Although close to the airport, Matagorda offers limited activities and nightlife outside its central shopping centre.

It is more suitable for families with young children, but those looking for an exciting holiday experience may find it a bit dull.

La Santa

La Santa is known for the large Club La Santa hotel, but it is quite isolated, with limited dining and entertainment options outside the resort.

It is best suited for sports enthusiasts, and those who are not part of this niche may find the area too remote.

I hope you found this guide on where to stay in Lanzarote helpful and are now ready for your trip.

If you have any questions about the areas, please leave a comment below, and I’ll do my best to help.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Which area is best for families in Lanzarote?

Playa Blanca is often recommended for families because of its beautiful beaches and relaxed atmosphere. It is a peaceful area with many family-friendly hotels and facilities. However, I think Puerto del Carmen would be excellent for families, too.

Where should you stay to experience the nightlife on Lanzarote?

Puerto del Carmen is known as the best place on the island for nightlife. The area has many bars, clubs, and restaurants, making it ideal for those looking for a lively holiday. I was surprised at how many Irish pubs there are.

Which area is best for surfers on Lanzarote?

Caleta de Famara is popular among surfers due to its consistent wind conditions and waves. The area has several surf schools and a relaxed atmosphere that attracts surf enthusiasts.

Should you rent a car on Lanzarote?

It’s a good idea to rent a car if you’d like to experience more than just the town you’re staying in. Lanzarote has many incredibly beautiful natural experiences, and with a car, you can easily choose your own route. There are also plenty of day trips from the most popular holiday areas.

How To: Barcelona Airport to City Center in 30 minutes ✈️ https://destinationwellknown.com/barcelona-airport-to-city/ https://destinationwellknown.com/barcelona-airport-to-city/#respond Thu, 04 Jan 2024 10:22:29 +0000 https://destinationwellknown.com/?p=5464 Getting from Barcelona Airport to the City Center is easy & cheap. I'm sharing here an overview of your transport options.

Welcome to my comprehensive guide for getting from Barcelona Airport to the city center.

In this guide, I’ll provide you with all the necessary details for your journey, including bus, train, metro, taxi, and pre-booked taxi options.

I’ve been traveling to Barcelona every year for the past 3 years (and I’ve got a trip planned for this year, too) so I know the airport and the city very well.

Barcelona
Get ready to explore one of the best cities in Europe!

Barcelona’s main airport, where you’ll land, is called Barcelona-El Prat Airport and it’s located very near the city itself:

This guide is designed to make your transition from landing at Barcelona Airport to reaching your hotel in the city center as smooth as possible.

Let me help you navigate your way from Barcelona Airport to the city center without any unnecessary detours.

Aerobus – the official airport express bus 🚌

Barcelona Airport bus to city center

Taking the Aerobus from Barcelona-El Prat Airport to the city center is a swift and cost-effective option.

This shuttle service, with lines A1 and A2, ensures a smooth 35-minute ride to the heart of Barcelona, costing only 7.50€ for a one-way ticket.

The A1 Aerobus departs from Terminal 1, while the A2 starts at Terminal 2.

Locating the Aerobus stops at Barcelona Airport is straightforward.

At Terminal T1, the Aerobus stop is conveniently situated one floor below the arrivals hall. To reach it, simply walk to the lower level of the arrivals terminal.

Once there, turn left towards a descending ramp, and you’ll find yourself directly in front of the Aerobus stop.

If you’re arriving at Terminal T2, the process is equally simple. As you exit the arrivals hall, the Aerobus stop is located to the left.

Where does the bus stop?

Airport bus stops

Each route makes three strategic stops in Barcelona:

 • Plaça Espanya
 • Gran Via-Urgell
 • Plaça de l’Universitat
 • The final stop at Plaça Catalunya (in the heart of Barcelona)

Bus schedule

aerobus barcelona

These buses run daily all year round, including holidays.

Both services operates from 5:35 am to 1:05 am, and from Plaça Catalunya, for the return journey, it runs from 5:00 am to 12:30 am.

The frequency is every 10 minutes early in the morning and late at night, and every 5 minutes during the peak hours of 6:50 am to 9:45 pm.

Check out my Barcelona guide on Youtube:

Airport express bus tickets

Purchasing Aerobus tickets is straightforward. While you can buy them at the airport terminals or directly from the bus driver, I highly recommend purchasing them online to avoid delays, especially during busy periods.

Get your tickets here (with free cancellation).

Online tickets are the same price as on-site purchases.

For families traveling with young ones, it’s good to know that children under four travel for free.

Using the Aerobus is a convenient way to navigate directly from Barcelona Airport to the city center, especially if you want to save time and avoid the complexity of multiple transfers.

If you’ve yet to book your hotel, check out my massive guide on the best areas and places to stay in Barcelona.

The Aerobus is my preferred way of getting from Barcelona Airport to the city center.

Taxi – the easiest & fastest way option to your hotel 🚕

Barcelona Airport taxis
Barcelona’s official taxis are easily recognizable by their black and yellow colors.

When I arrive in Barcelona and need to get straight to my hotel or I’m tired from travelling, I’ll get a taxi.

Taking a taxi from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a straightforward and quick option, particularly suitable for groups of at least two people or families.

It combines the ease of door-to-door service with the efficiency of direct travel. The taxi points are prominently located at the exits of Terminals T1 and T2, with abundant taxis available.

The well-organized queue system reflects Barcelona’s general approach to public services.

Taxi prices from Barcelona Airport

Unlike some cities, there’s no fixed fare from the airport to the city center. The minimum charge for any taxi trip originating from the airport is 20€, which includes all additional fees like the airport surcharge of 3.10€.

This means the fare will be at least 20€, even for nearby destinations.

Be aware that night rates apply from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM, which might affect the overall fare.

A taxi ride to the city center typically takes 20 to 25 minutes, with the cost generally ranging between 30-35€, depending on your terminal of departure and exact destination.

Pre-booked taxi with English speaking driver

Pre-booked taxi from Barcelona airport to city center hotel

For those seeking a more predictable experience, pre-booking a taxi can be a great alternative.

Companies like Welcome Pickups offer services where all drivers speak English, removing any language barrier and adding a layer of certainty to your journey.

I’ve used Welcome Pickups all over Europe and have had great experiences. They’re always on time and drive very well.

This can be especially comforting if you’re new to the city or traveling with family and prefer to have a smooth, pre-arranged transportation option right from the airport.

The prices depend on your destination, but you’ll know it when you book online.

Taxi price from Barcelona airport to city

For example, a ride from the airport to a hotel on the Rambla will cost €39.

Renfe – train to the city center in 30 mins 🚄

Barcelona Airport train to city center

A slightly cheaper option is by train.

Taking the train from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a highly efficient and economical option.

With a single journey costing only 5.15€, it is a budget-friendly mode of transport.

Here’s what you should know:

Terminal Access

The train service operates exclusively from Terminal T2. If you arrive at Terminal T1, a free, easily identifiable green shuttle bus will connect you to Terminal T2.

Locating the Train Station

In Terminal T2, follow the clear signage to the Renfe station, Spain’s national railway company. The train station is a mere 3-minute walk from the terminal.

Barcelona City Stops

Running on the R2 North line, the train halts at two central stations in Barcelona: Estació Sants and Passeig de Gràcia.

These stops offer convenient access to various key areas in the city.

Here’s a great video about taking the train in Spain:

Travel Time and Frequency

The trip from T2 to Barcelona city center takes about 30 minutes. Trains operate from 5:42 am to 11:28 pm, approximately every 30 minutes.

For return trips, the first train from Passeig de Gràcia departs at 5:08 am and the last at 11:07 pm, reaching Estació Sants about five minutes later.

Buying Tickets & Hola BCN Card

hola bcn public transport ticket
The Hola BCN Card is a great option for exploring the city by public transport.

Tickets are available at the Renfe station in T2, where you can use both ticket machines and staffed counters.

Hola BCN! Card Option

hola bcn airport train

For convenience, consider the Hola BCN! card, which covers your airport to city center transfer and all other public transport within Barcelona.

This card is a practical and cost-effective choice for easily navigating the city. It’s also valid for many of the most famous attractions and things to do in Barcelona.

Metro – public transport from both Terminals Ⓜ

Metro in Barcelona

The metro from Barcelona Airport to the city center is a convenient option for travelers.

Both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are connected to the metro network via Line 9 (L9 Sud), making transit into the city quite straightforward.

Here’s what you need to know:

Route

While Line 9 directly connects the airport to various parts of Barcelona, it doesn’t go directly downtown.

To reach central locations like Universitat or Plaça Catalunya, you must transfer at Torrassa for the red line.

For other popular destinations like Provença, Diagonal, or Sagrada Familia, change at Collblanc for the blue line.

Get an understanding of the Barcelona metro in this video:

Station Access

The metro stations are conveniently located at the exits of both T1 and T2 terminals, and they are well-marked.

Travel Details

The journey takes about 30 minutes, and the fare is 5.15€. The L9 Sud operates with a frequency of every 30 minutes.

See more about the different lines and service updates on the official website.

Tickets

You can buy metro tickets at the station using vending machines and ATMs.

Alternatively, the Hola BCN card is also valid for the metro.

As previously mentioned, this card is a great option as it covers all your journeys in the city, including the airport transfer.

Using the metro is a practical choice for those seeking a direct and cost-effective way to reach Barcelona’s city center, with the flexibility to navigate to various key destinations within the city.

It’s important to note that if you take the metro from the city to the airport, you must buy a special airport ticket.

Standard single tickets, T-casual, T-grup, and other special travel cards like event tickets or the T-Escolar are not valid for airport travel on the L9 Sud metro line.

So, if you arrive at the airport metro station with an invalid ticket, you will need to buy an Airport ticket to exit.

Still unsure how to get from Barcelona Airport to the city?

Review: Alua Suites Fuerteventura 🚩 Poo in the Pool & Dirty Rooms with ants! https://destinationwellknown.com/review-alua-suites-fuerteventura/ https://destinationwellknown.com/review-alua-suites-fuerteventura/#respond Mon, 04 Dec 2023 11:15:15 +0000 https://destinationwellknown.com/?p=5420 Alua Suites in Fuerteventura is technically a 4-star hotel, but my experience at the hotel in Corralejo was terrible. Here's my review, incl. photos!

The post Review: Alua Suites Fuerteventura 🚩 Poo in the Pool & Dirty Rooms with ants! appeared first on Destination Well Known.

]]>
Christmas was spent in Fuerteventura, where I stayed at Alua Suites in Corralejo. It’s an all-inclusive hotel located in one of Fuerteventura’s best tourist towns, but how was it?

Here is my review of Alua Suites Fuerteventura where I stayed in December 2021.

But let it be said immediately – the beautiful pictures on the booking site can be deceiving.

The original plan was to spend a couple of weeks in Thailand this winter, but good old C-19 put a stop to a trip to Asia.

Therefore, in the days leading up to Christmas without any plans, we checked all the usual last-minute travel sites for cheap trips to the Canary Islands. We chose Alua Suites in Fuerteventura.

The journey to Fuerteventura with SAS went smoothly, and check-in at Copenhagen Airport was painless.

Fuerteventura Airport to hotel

We purchased airport transportation through the travel agency, which also worked well.

Things started to go awry when we checked into Alua Suites, a large, all-inclusive hotel with 4 stars.

check in alua suites fuerteventura
Check in at Alua Suites Fuerteventura.

Dirty rooms with ants 🐜

dirty room alua suites

The room was outright dirty, and it was particularly bad in the bathroom, which simply wasn’t clean.

Ants in Bed
Ants in the bed…

You probably know the feeling of having woken up early, flown for 4-5 hours, taken the airport bus, and finally checked in.

You just want to let go of everything and enjoy the vacation.

Dirty Alua Suites

So much so that you can end up being okay with many things.

So, there we overlooked the dirty desk and the unpleasant bathroom.

However, we did complain when there was ‘brown stuff’ on our towels one day, and new ones were provided relatively quickly.

Passable Food

Alua Suites food

It was my first all-inclusive trip, so the concept of a buffet for breakfast, lunch, and dinner was new to me.

It was quite fun the first time I went for lunch, being able to pour myself a small beer and choose from various dishes.

Drinks at Alua Suites Fuerteventura

The food at Alua Suites was passable.

I understand the challenge of cooking for children and adults from all over Europe, who naturally have different preferences.

Alua Suites buffet restaurant

However, the food didn’t taste that great, and if I had received food like this in a restaurant, I would have been very disappointed.

It should be mentioned that several times, we found lipstick on the cups we were given for drinks… 🥲

Friendly Staff in Bars and Restaurants

Alua Suites bar staff

The hotel staff were helpful and friendly, whether it was visiting the bar to ask for a soda, beer, or sangria, all of which were included in the price.

What really tipped the scales was an incident at one of the hotel’s many swimming pools.

Poo in the Pool 💩

Yes, a guest (likely one of the younger ones) couldn’t hold it in the heated swimming pool. My partner and I were lying by the pool, enjoying the fantastic winter sun – it was up to 23 degrees, a real treat in December.

So we were about to go into the pool. We thought we had found the perfect time, as the pool had been quite crowded for the last half hour.

Now we could have the pool to ourselves!

Incompetent Staff by the pool 🤬

I won’t say who, but one of us got into the water before a hotel employee casually walked over and suggested that we should probably get out.

That’s when we noticed a small yellow sign at the other end of the pool advising against going in.

Seeing what was floating around in the pool with my eyes made me angry.

If someone defecates in your swimming pool, every single staff member should ensure that no guests go into that water.

It was an insane experience, and I don’t know why I didn’t make a bigger scene then because it was utterly disgusting.

Closed pool at alua suites

Afterwards, they did properly close the pool…

New Room was Also Dirty

Quickly back to our room and after a shower, the ants, the dirty room, and the generally inadequate cleaning (we had no trash can in the room, and even though there was daily cleaning, our garbage was not dealt with) became unbearable.

That was when we decided to let go of our zen feeling and complain about the room.

Fortunately, the receptionist took it seriously, and we were given a new room relatively quickly.

But it was also dirty. There was even a glass with cigarette butts on the terrace.

Dirty room Alua Suites Corralejo

We considered our options: should we complain again?

We thought that this might just be the standard for the hotel – it’s just a dirty hotel with ants.

We ended up ‘adjusting’ and spent the last few days outside of the hotel, which looked fantastic from home but turned out to feel a bit like an all-inclusive hell.

Avoid Alua Suites Fuerteventura 🚩

I strongly advise against traveling to Fuerteventura and staying at Alua Suites in Corralejo.

Fuerteventura is a fantastic island, Corralejo is the perfect holiday town, and the weather in December was just perfect.

Alua Suites in Fuerteventura was dreadful and in no way worth the money.

See the difference between my photos in this review and the hotel’s here. You see how it’s easy to get deceived, right?

I’m sure I’ll be back to Fuerteventura, but I wont be staying at Alua Suites again, that’s for sure.

Check out my guide to the best areas and places to stay in Fuerteventura if you’re looking for an Alua alternative.

Best Areas in Tenerife

If you’re in a hurry or just want a quick overview, here it is:

Click on the area’s name above to see current hotel offers in the mentioned areas in Tenerife.

The guide continues below, where I delve deeper into these areas and recommend places to stay.

1. Playa de las Américas – resort area with vibrant nightlife & lots to do 🏖

If sun, sand, and lively nightlife appeal to you, then Playa de las Américas is an area you won’t want to miss when deciding where to stay in Tenerife.

Playa de las Américas, an excellent area for tourists in Tenerife
This area in Tenerife boasts both beach and city life.

Located on the island’s south coast, this holiday hotspot combines beaches with many activities appealing to visitors of all ages.

Moreover, it’s in the southern part of Tenerife where you have the best odds of sunny and pleasant weather (especially during winter).

With a mix of black volcanic sand beaches and classic beaches, there’s ample opportunity to find the perfect spot to relax with a book or take a refreshing dip.

Get a feel for the beach and the area here:

Accommodation in Playa de las Américas ranges from luxury hotels with all imaginable amenities to more budget-friendly options that still keep you close to all the action.

So, regardless of your travel style and budget, there’s a perfect place to stay in Playa de las Américas.

 • If you’ve been to Gran Canaria, this area resembles Playa del Ingles.

I’d also like to mention the area Los Cristianos, which has almost merged with Playa de las Américas but still has its unique vibe – located just south of the larger resort town.

Los Cristianos is for those seeking a more balanced and peaceful vacation with a taste of authentic Canarian life.

The town’s former status as a quiet fishing village still shines through its cosy, slightly laid-back atmosphere.

Here, you can stroll along the tranquil promenades, enjoy a calm evening out, and even mingle with locals in the charming old town.

Los Cristianos leans towards a more traditional ambience, where you can enjoy the sunset from a peaceful café and experience a slice of authentic Tenerife.

Check out the best hotels in Los Cristianos here.

Places to stay in Playa de las Américas

Returning to the main town in this tourist-friendly part of Tenerife, I’ve selected some of the best hotels in the area for various types of travellers and budgets.

Let’s kick things off with a genuine luxury hotel.

Europe Villa Cortes is right in the heart of Playa de las Americas, offering an unparalleled luxurious experience – it’s arguably the most iconic hotel in this part of Tenerife.

This 5-star hotel is a haven of tranquillity despite its central location.

The hotel ticks all the boxes for a dream vacation with direct access to the sea, an exclusive spa, and gourmet restaurants.

One of the hotel’s many restaurants sits right next to the water.

Past guests particularly praise the attentive service and the impressive facilities, while the colourful, Mexican-inspired architecture and decor also capture the hearts of visitors.

Similarly situated on the beach, we have Cleopatra Palace Hotel, a paradise for those seeking sun, sea, and comfort in Tenerife.

Reviews from former guests particularly highlight the excellent location and the welcoming service, while others mention the spacious and clean rooms as a significant plus.

Next, let’s consider a slightly cheaper hotel in the previously mentioned Los Cristianos area.

If you’re seeking a peaceful stay a bit away from the hustle, Klayman Olivina Aparthotel in Los Cristianos is an excellent choice.

This cosy aparthotel offers the perfect mix of serene surroundings and proximity to various attractions and beaches that Los Cristianos is renowned for.

Former guests emphasize the friendly staff and the relaxing ambience, while some point out that, although the facilities are basic, there’s excellent value for money and a comfortable base for exploring the island.

2. Costa Adeje – Best Area for Luxury Hotels & Tranquil Ambiance 🏨

You don’t need to travel far from Playa de las Américas to reach our next holiday destination. However, Costa Adeje still stands out significantly from the previously mentioned area.

Costa Adeje, best place to stay in Tenerife with top-notch hotels

Numerous lovely coves and beaches stretch along the entirety of Costa Adeje.

Even though it’s just a short 10-20 minute drive between the two, the ambience in Costa Adeje is noticeably different, exuding a calmer, more refined experience.

Costa Adeje has made a name for itself as a locale where posh hotels, exclusive shops, and high-end dining establishments beautifully come together under the warm sun and gentle breezes of the Atlantic.

Playa del Duque in Costa Adeje area in Tenerife
Playa del Duque – one of the best beaches in the area.

If your idea of a perfect holiday includes days at exquisite beaches like Playa del Duque, with its soft golden sands and blue waters, or afternoons spent browsing chic boutiques and evenings indulging in gourmet dining, then Costa Adeje is the ultimate place to stay in Tenerife.

Check out the best hotels in Costa Adeje here.

Here, holidays are characterised by quality and tranquillity, making the area particularly popular among couples, families, and travellers looking to indulge in luxury and relaxation.

You can explore the tranquillity and stunning views from the beach promenade, embark on boat trips from the local marina, or enjoy a day on the golf course surrounded by Tenerife’s picturesque landscapes.

Costa Adeje also offers many fun activities, such as Siam Park, one of the world’s top water parks, enjoyable for kids and adults.

Whether it’s a family vacation, a romantic getaway, or a solo trip for some self-pampering, Costa Adeje offers a taste of the finer things in life.

It’s just a stone’s throw from the hustle and bustle of Playa de las Américas, yet in a world where peace, charm, and elegance prevail.

 • We’re still in the southern part of Tenerife, where the weather is typically more favourable than in the north, making it an excellent spot for a winter vacation.

Places to stay in Costa Adeje

Costa Adeje is actually a larger area with small coves and beaches, so there are many hotels to choose from, depending on what you’re seeking.

Below, I’ll share some of my favourite hotels in the Costa Adeje area.

Let’s start with a luxury hotel that looks perfect for a cosy vacation in Costa Adeje.

Proper luxury awaits you at Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort & Spa.

Dreams Jardin Tropical Resort & Spa

This 5-star resort doesn’t compromise on quality and offers a world of indulgence with its impressive spa facilities, gourmet restaurants, and beautifully landscaped gardens that radiate tropical charm.

Here, you can immerse yourself in an oasis of tranquillity and enjoy the azure sea view from your private balcony.

Guest reviews often highlight the attentive service, luxurious surroundings, and culinary diversity. However, some mention that certain areas of the hotel can feel a tad busy during the peak season.

And now, onto an even more family-friendly hotel in Tenerife:

HOVIMA La Pinta Beachfront Family Hotel is a fantastic hotel for families with children, and its location offers direct access to Costa Adeje’s gentle waves and golden beaches.

HOVIMA La Pinta Beachfront Family Hotel, best place to stay for families

This hotel is designed with families in mind, providing a colourful children’s area, a kids’ club, and rooms tailored for young travellers.

Adults can also indulge in various relaxation and entertainment options while ensuring their little ones are happy and entertained.

HOVIMA La Pinta Beachfront Family Hotel pool and beach

Previous guests have spoken highly of the accommodating staff, the laid-back atmosphere, and the numerous activities available for children of all ages.

However, it’s noted that while the hotel is a haven for families, there might be better choices for couples seeking a quiet and romantic escape, given the hotel’s child-friendly focus.

3. El Médano – Exciting Area with Bohemian Vibe & Surf-spots 🏄‍♀️

Tenerife holds more than just the classic tourist areas; there are also hidden gems like El Médano – an area that offers a unique, relaxed, and bohemian-like atmosphere.

El Médano, best area to stay for bohemian vibes and surf

El Médano is known for its laid-back vibe and is a paradise for those looking to blend relaxation with adventure, especially those drawn to wind and water sports.

With its long, golden sandy beaches and constant breezes, El Médano has become a globally recognised hotspot for windsurfers, kitesurfers, and others looking to play with the elements in the clear Atlantic waters.

Playa El Médano and Playa La Tejita are among the highlights here, where locals and international surfers are frequently seen honing their skills and challenging the blue waves.

I get similar vibes from El Médano as from Corralejo in Fuerteventura.

Check out the best hotels in El Médano here.

El Médano

However, you don’t need to be a surfer to enjoy this charming place.

Surrounded by the natural beauty of Montaña Roja Nature Reserve, El Médano also offers peace and beauty to those seeking a more understated vacation.

El Médano is also an excellent place to stay for those wishing to experience Tenerife from a more authentic perspective.

Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie seeking the next wave, a nature lover dreaming of peaceful exploration, or a culture enthusiast looking for a deeper understanding of the destination, you’ll find a home in El Médano.

It’s a great place to stay for those travelling to Tenerife who don’t need to be in the most well-known tourist cities.

Plus, the area is very close to Tenerife’s southern airport, making it easy to get there.

Places to stay in El Médano

El Médano is not the area most tourists choose when travelling to Tenerife, so there aren’t as many hotels here as in the previously mentioned holiday areas.

However, there are a few charming places to stay, so let’s take a closer look at these.

Hotel Médano stands out as a solid accommodation option in the heart of El Médano.

Hotel Médano
If you want to stay near the sea, Hotel Médano is a pretty good shout 😀

This beautifully situated coastal hotel offers guests a unique sea view and is just a stone’s throw from the town’s lively squares and local markets.

Past visitors often highlight the simple but comfortable ambience, which makes the stay pleasant without detracting from the surrounding beauties.

Guests have also praised the friendly staff and the easy access to everything in the town.

However, some emphasize that while the hotel offers an authentic and central experience, the facilities seem outdated, and modernization is a good idea.

On the other hand, you get significantly more for your money in El Médano than in some of the other areas in Tenerife.

Prepare to feel the sea breeze lightly caressing your face as you enter the world of peace and tranquillity at Hotel Ventus in El Médano.

Hotel Ventus, cheap place to stay in El Médano

This charming hotel offers a personal and cosy atmosphere, providing a quiet counterpart to the more bustling holiday areas.

Past guests have raved about the attentive staff and the well-maintained facilities. However, a few remarks about the desire for more dining options have been made.

Are you looking for a quiet, adult-only stay during your Tenerife holiday?

Kn Hotel Arenas del Mar, located slightly outside the heart of El Médano, opens its doors to a world where tranquillity, romance, and relaxation take centre stage.

Adult-only hotel with spa in Tenerife

This “adults-only” hotel is designed for those seeking a quieter vacation away from the city’s buzzing activity but still within reach, with only a 15-minute walk to the city centre.

There’s also an indoor pool and spa area, so even if the weather outside isn’t cooperating, you can still relax indoors at this hotel.

Past guests have praised the friendly staff and the peaceful surroundings, offering a true escape from everyday hustle.

However, while the distance to the town is short, it can be remote for some.

So, you should be looking for a tranquil vacation – but where you can still get to town quite quickly or rent a car and explore much more of Tenerife.

4. Puerto de la Cruz – charming area close to beautiful nature 🏞

If you dream of a vacation where lush, green landscapes meet the beautiful sea, Puerto de la Cruz is the place to stay in Northern Tenerife.

Puerto de la Cruz, charming area to stay in Northern Tenerife
Playa de San Telmo in the centre of Puerto de la Cruz.

We’ve moved to the northern part of Tenerife, where Puerto de la Cruz shines with its unique charm that stands apart from the more tourist-heavy areas and holiday towns in the south.

Puerto de la Cruz is a cosmopolitan gem that has managed to preserve its original architecture and local culture while still offering modern amenities and activities for visitors.

Check out the best hotels in Puerto de la Cruz.

The winding cobblestone streets, colourful buildings, and historic squares reflect the town’s rich history and architectural beauty.

Puerto de la Cruz

Beaches here, for example, Playa Jardín, are bordered by black, volcanic sand, offering a dramatic contrast to the crystal-clear waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Puerto de la Cruz is also home to Loro Parque, a world-renowned zoo and wildlife park, one of the island’s major attractions and undoubtedly worth a visit, especially for families.

For those looking to combine relaxation with a touch of exploration, the town’s old district, La Ranilla, offers a blend of traditional taverns and modern bars where you can enjoy a drink or two while experiencing the local atmosphere.

Explore local markets where you’ll find everything from freshly produced products to handicrafts and unique souvenirs.

Whether you’re seeking cultural adventures, scenic hikes, soothing beach days, or quite an excellent nightlife, Puerto de la Cruz is a tempting destination that promises a well-balanced vacation between relaxation and experiences.

It is a great place to stay in Tenerife for many travellers.

One drawback of staying in Puerto de la Cruz is that the weather is typically sunnier on the southern part of the island.

It’s not that the weather is always bad in the northern part of Tenerife, but you should expect it to be cloudier and cooler up here in Puerto de la Cruz compared to the holiday areas in the south.

Places to stay in Puerto de la Cruz

Being one of the larger cities in Tenerife, there’s naturally a plethora of hotels in Puerto de la Cruz. Let me mention a few of the places I particularly like below.

If you’re seeking a blend of elegance and comfort in Puerto de la Cruz, Atlantic Mirage Suites & SPA might be for you.

It’s an adults-only hotel, so it’s unsuitable for families with children.

Situated with a magnificent view of the Atlantic Ocean, this hotel offers an experience where relaxation takes centre stage.

5. Los Gigantes – Best Area for Hiking & Beautiful Nature 🥾

In the southwest corner of Tenerife, you’ll find Los Gigantes, a remarkable town known for its imposing cliffs that proudly tower over the surrounding landscape and the deep blue waters below.

Los Gigantes Tenerife

The name “Los Gigantes” translates to “The Giants,” aptly describing the majestic cliffs that lend the area its signature silhouette.

As you step into this charming small town, the mighty cliffs, known as “Acantilados de Los Gigantes“, will undoubtedly capture your gaze with their overwhelming and magnificent presence.

This scenic marvel, soaring dramatically up to 600 meters above sea level, offers a breathtaking backdrop and acts as a natural barrier, providing the area with a more stable and dry climate.

The beach in Los Gigantes, with its black volcanic sand, is a tranquil and picturesque spot where you can relax while gazing at the dizzying cliffs.

Check out the best hotels in Los Gigantes here.

The sea here is notably clear and is often regarded as one of Tenerife’s best places for snorkelling and diving.

Here, you can explore the wondrous underwater world and even glimpse playful dolphins in the distance.

At the marina in Los Gigantes, you’ll find a range of boat tours offering the opportunity to explore the cliffs from a completely different angle and spot whales and dolphins in their natural habitat.

The surrounding area also boasts several hiking trails that lead you through the encompassing nature, letting you experience unique flora, fauna, and magnificent views.

Whether you are an experienced hiker or simply looking for a peaceful walk, there are trails suitable for all fitness and adventure levels.

Undoubtedly, it’s one of the best places to stay in Tenerife if you love hiking and trekking.

The town is quieter and more laid-back than many other holiday hotspots in Tenerife. It maintains a cosy and relaxed atmosphere with various cafes, restaurants, and shops where you can savour local delicacies or find the perfect souvenir.

Whether you want to relax on the beach or embark on nature hikes, there are plenty of opportunities to tailor your perfect trip to Tenerife by staying in Los Gigantes.

Places to stay in Los Gigantes

There are some genuinely splendid hotels in Los Gigantes. Let’s take a closer look at a few of my favourites.

Hotel Stil Los Gigantes stands out because of its magnificent location and promise of tranquillity as it’s an exclusive adults-only hotel.

Imagine waking up to a panoramic view of the iconic Los Gigantes cliffs and swimming in one of the relaxing pool areas. Previous guests point out the sublime location and praise the hotel’s restaurant and bar area.

Guests have previously highlighted the spacious and well-equipped apartments and the accommodating staff, making this place a gem for those seeking a luxurious base during their stay.

You’ll find Ona Las Rosas in the enchanting Santiago del Teide, just a short drive from Los Gigantes.

Many guests have pointed out the large pool area and the cosy apartments as highlights of the hotel.

With proximity to nature and local attractions, this place is an obvious choice for those wanting a balanced vacation with the opportunity for excursions.

Where not to stay in Tenerife?

Teide in Tenerife
Mount Teide is beautiful, but unless you’re a cyclist on high-altitude training, you probably wouldn’t want to stay there 😀

Although Tenerife is filled with many magnificent places suitable for all types of travellers, certain areas might not be at the top of your list, depending on the kind of holiday you are looking for.

Santa Cruz

While it is the island’s capital and offers certain cultural and shopping benefits, there might be better choices than Santa Cruz if you’re seeking a traditional sun and beach holiday.

The lack of proximity to the island’s main beach areas and a busier urban atmosphere might reduce the relaxation factor for those seeking a more peaceful escape.

Güímar

There’s nothing wrong with this town, known for its Pyramids (Pirámides de Güímar) and an exciting place to visit on a day trip.

However, Güímar may not be the ideal spot for tourists to stay. With fewer accommodation options and a lack of tourist infrastructure, it might be more challenging for visitors to navigate and experience the full range of what Tenerife offers.

As mentioned, Tenerife has plenty of varied, good areas to stay, ranging from the vibrant and lively Playa de las Américas to the calm and scenic El Medano and Los Gigantes.

Whether you’re seeking the grand glamour of Costa Adeje or the traditional Canarian atmosphere in Puerto de la Cruz, there’s a destination for every type of traveller on this captivating island.

I hope you found this travel guide to Tenerife helpful and are now ready to book your hotel. If you have any questions about any areas or hotels I mention in this guide, please comment below.

Have a wonderful trip to Tenerife!

Frequently Asked Questions:

When is the best time to visit Tenerife?

Tenerife is a wonderful destination to visit year-round due to the island’s mild climate. However, the peak season from December to April is particularly popular, as many European travellers seek sun and pleasant weather during this period when it might be challenging to find similar conditions elsewhere in Europe.

So, if you desire sun and warmth during the winter months, Tenerife is an obvious choice.

Is there a difference in weather across Tenerife?

Despite the island being relatively small, there are notable differences in weather across Tenerife. These climatic variations are mainly due to the island’s terrain and the dominant presence of Teide, Spain’s highest mountain.

Northern Tenerife: The northern part generally has a cooler and more humid climate. This results in lusher landscapes, greener forests, and more rainy days, especially during winter. Cities like Puerto de la Cruz and La Laguna often experience cloudy weather and brief rain showers.

Southern Tenerife: The southern part, including popular tourist areas like Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, boasts a drier and sunnier climate. This region experiences fewer rainy days and tends to be warmer, making it a favourite among sun-seeking tourists.

Highlands and Teide National Park: The climate is cooler due to its higher altitude, and temperatures can vary significantly. It’s not uncommon to see snow atop Mount Teide in winter.

Which airport should I fly to?

Tenerife boasts two airports: Tenerife South and Tenerife North. The southern airport is closer to the major tourist areas.

Is car rental necessary in Tenerife?

Car rental in Tenerife is optional, but it’s undoubtedly the best option to explore the island at your own pace. With a car, you’ll be free to visit more remote beaches, mountain villages, and other attractions that might be harder to reach by public transport.

However, if you mainly plan to spend your time in one of the larger holiday areas and only wish to embark on occasional day trips, there’s an abundance of organised tours available from these regions. These tours can take you to the most popular attractions, such as Teide National Park, Masca Valley, and other notable spots.

Is Tenerife suitable for families with children? And where should families stay?

Yes! Tenerife is undoubtedly an excellent choice for families, and it’s easy to see why. The island’s beaches are not only picturesque, but many of them are also particularly child-friendly, with calm waters, making them ideal for the youngest family members.

Regarding activities, families won’t lack options. Siam Park, one of Europe’s largest water parks, and Loro Parque, a renowned animal park, are just a few attractions that will delight children and adults.

Tenerife is home to many family-oriented hotels and holiday accommodations. Many venues offer special facilities like children’s pools, entertainment programs, and kids’ clubs for younger guests.

Dining out with kids is easy in Tenerife. Most restaurants are accommodating to families with children, and it’s common to find special kids’ menus.
Regarding safety, Tenerife is known to be a secure destination, and the locals are generally very friendly and welcoming towards families. This, combined with the island’s family-friendly activities, makes Tenerife an ideal spot for a family holiday.

For families wondering where best to stay in Tenerife, places like Costa Adeje, Los Cristianos, and Puerto de la Cruz are among the most recommended. These areas offer fantastic beaches and a wide range of activities and amenities that will make any family’s stay comfortable and memorable.

All of the areas I mention in this guide are family-friendly.

Are you looking for the perfect place to stay on your trip to Gran Canaria? In this guide, I talk about the best areas of Gran Canaria and give tips for choosing the best hotel for different types of vacations.

Here are the best areas in Gran Canaria ☀

If you’re in a rush, here are the best areas in Gran Canaria and a brief summary of what they offer:

Click the link above and see the best hotels in each area.

Gran Canaria has been a regular travel destination for many tourists for decades.

In the wintertime, many tourists travel here due to the excellent weather conditions, where you can typically experience a lot of sun and up to 20-25 degrees.

This is similar to the surrounding islands, such as Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Tenerife.

Most of the holiday areas are located in the southern part of the island, as the weather is simply the best there.

Where to stay in Gran Canaria?

In the summertime (July), there is an average of 24 degrees and 30 rain-free days in the Maspalomas area, which we will get to in the guide below. So Gran Canaria is pretty weather-safe regardless of the season!

But where to stay in Gran Canaria? I will tell you that in the guide below, where I describe the best places for all the different needs.

1. Maspalomas – best area in Gran Canaria ⭐

Yes, I just voted Maspalomas the best area in Gran Canaria.

Maspalomas is also one of the most popular holiday areas in Gran Canaria, so I’m not alone on this.

Maspalomas, best place to stay in Gran Canaria

Maspalomas is also mentioned on all lists when you read about sights and experiences in Gran Canaria – primarily because of the beautiful sand dunes you find in the extension of the city.

When I was in Gran Canaria for the first time as a child, I was highly fascinated by the sand dunes in Maspalomas. There we were, suddenly standing in a desert with sand from the iconic Sahara desert.

Maspalomas is also a popular holiday area for families with children and couples. There are quiet surroundings, many child-friendly hotels and a very relaxed atmosphere.

See the best hotels in Maspalomas here.

As a side note, Maspalomas is also extremely popular with LGBT+ people, so there are many rainbow colours in the cityscape. 🏳️‍🌈

Maspalomas gran canaria, fantastic area

The dunes mentioned above are located down to the water, with several kilometres of sandy beaches nearby.

Maspalomas is also a relatively large area. For example, you can also easily look for hotels in Meloneras, which is immediately adjacent to Maspalomas.

Places to stay in Maspalomas & Meloneras

Maspalomas town is slightly “uphill” from the sea, while the Meloneras area is next to the ocean. Let me share some of my favourite hotels in both Maspalomas and Meloneras.

I’ve taken quite a liking to this hotel.

Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa is in a class by itself, situated in Meloneras, close to the beach and the famous dunes of Maspalomas.

best place to stay in Maspalomas, Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa

Besides its impressive spa and wellness centre, the resort offers a fitness centre equipped with modern machines to stay fit during your vacation.

For those who love to swim, there are four large outdoor pools, including a lagoon pool and a massive infinity pool.

Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa

Additionally, the hotel has tennis courts, a mini-golf course and offers a wide range of activities and entertainment for both children and adults.

lopesan gran canaria, luxury hotel meloneras

And it’s located just a spit away from the beautiful sandy beach that characterizes the area.

Previous guests particularly highlight the hotel’s facilities as one of the primary reasons to return.

With such a range of first-class facilities, Lopesan Costa Meloneras Resort & Spa is an obvious choice for those looking for a diverse and luxurious holiday experience.

See more photos and book online.

Hotel Faro is a true gem of luxury, ideally located right by the beach and specially designed for older clientele – it’s an adults-only hotel.

hotel faro gran canaria

This hotel is a perfect choice if you’re looking for a quiet, romantic, and luxurious experience without the noise and play of children.

The facilities here are really something out of the ordinary. You can expect a high-end spa and wellness area where you can pamper yourself with everything from massages to beauty treatments.

hotel faro room view
Room with a view.

Outside, there is a beautiful pool that almost blends into the sea’s horizon, giving you a sense that you’re close to the ocean even when you’re in the pool.

hotel faro room, brilliant place to stay in the Maspalomas area

Previous guests are particularly enthusiastic about the hotel’s exclusive atmosphere, excellent facilities, and close proximity to the beach.

Hotel Faro delivers abundantly if you’re looking for an exquisite adult vacation focused on relaxation and luxury.

See more photos and book here.

Let’s also look at a slightly cheaper hotel in the area.

Caybeach Princess offers a different experience than some of the more luxurious resorts in the area, making it a favourite for many travellers.

Caybeach Princess, Cheap Hotel Maspalomas

Located a bit “up” in the town, this hotel is perfect for exploring local restaurants, bars, and city life.

Here, you’ll find a large outdoor pool, surrounded by sun loungers and umbrellas, and a separate children’s pool—a good match for families or couples looking for relaxation and the option for activity.

Mini-golf course at the hotel in Gran Canaria

There is also a mini-golf course and a small fitness centre for more active guests.

Previous guests often highlight the good value for money and the hotel’s excellent location.

It’s especially popular among travellers who want a base for exploring the surrounding area without sacrificing comfort and necessary facilities.

See more photos and book here.

2. Playa del Ingles – best area for nightlife 🍻

In continuation of Maspalomas to the east, we find the area simply named after the beach: Playa del Ingles.

Where Maspalomas is 100% child-friendly and very quiet, there is more activity in the streets of Playa del Ingles. The area is often referred to as the best place to go to on Gran Canaria if you want to party.

But like Ayia Napa in Cyprus and many other destinations also touted as party destinations, these cities are often overlooked for other elements, which make them great.

And the same goes for Playa del Ingles.

See the best hotels in Playa del Ingles here.

I mention the holiday area especially because you can easily travel here, stay in a great hotel and enjoy one of Gran Canaria’s most beautiful beaches.

At the same time, you have many restaurants and shopping opportunities, and you can also swing past a bar (or two) in the evening.

However, there will be better areas in Gran Canaria for families with children.

Places to stay in Playa del Ingles

Therefore, my first recommendation for a nice place to stay in Playa del Ingles is one that is adults-only: the extremely luxurious Riu Palace Hotel.

hotel gran canaria playa del ingles

I stayed at one of these adult-only hotels (in Crete) recently with my girlfriend, and it was nice that we could just lie by the pool with a book in silence, whereas a family-friendly hotel might have been more hectic.

Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas

As the picture above shows, this hotel is located right next to the famous sand dunes in the Maspalomas/Playa del Ingles area.

See more photos and book online here.

Corallium Dunamar by Lopesan Hotels is another incredibly luxurious and adults-only hotel.

Corallium Dunamar by Lopesan Hotels, luxury hotel in Playa del Ingles

With a prime location in the heart of Playa del Ingles, just a short walk from the beach, this hotel combines convenience with luxury to capture the essence of Gran Canaria.

The hotel has a unique pyramidal structure, which is aesthetically pleasing and ensures that many rooms have a fantastic sea view.

Corallium Dunamar restaurant

The hotel also has several pools, one of which is an infinity pool overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

Close to shopping, dining, and nightlife, this hotel is the perfect launchpad for exploring everything that Playa del Ingles offers while still being able to retreat to luxurious comfort.

In short, if you’re after an all-around luxury experience in Playa del Ingles, Corallium Dunamar by Lopesan Hotels is the place for you.

See more photos and book here.

And let’s also look at a more budget-friendly hotel in Playa del Ingles.

Servatur Waikiki is a great place to stay in Gran Canaria for travellers who want to balance price with quality.

Servatur Waikiki, cheap place to stay in Gran Canaria

The hotel is located in Playa del Ingles, although it’s a bit farther away from the beach than the previously mentioned hotels.

You’ll find everything from tennis courts to a well-equipped fitness centre, making it an ideal choice for the active traveller.

Servatur Waikiki, fitness facilities

Rooms are modern, clean, and spacious, and the staff is always helpful and welcoming – something you can see if you read reviews from previous guests.

3. Puerto Rico – stay here for the beach & a city in a cosy bay 🌊

Puerto Rico is, in many ways, the obvious choice of area when travelling to Gran Canaria – whether as a single person, on a couple’s holiday or travelling with children.

It is a very classic holiday area that is particularly family-friendly.

See the best hotels in Puerto Rico here.

If you have tried travelling to places like Protaras/Fig Tree Bay in Cyprus, Platanias and Agia Marina in Crete and Alcudia in Mallorca, then you also know the atmosphere that also exists in Puerto Rico.

In other words, it may not be in this area that you get the completely authentic Canarian experience, where you only mingle with locals – but that is also otherwise difficult to find anywhere in Gran Canaria.

In Puerto Rico, we have an excellent sandy beach, many restaurants, a shopping centre and many hotels to choose from.

It is a good area for you looking for a holiday town where you only need to think about your commute between the hotel swimming pool, the beach and one of the many restaurants.

Places to stay in Puerto Rico

If I had to choose a hotel in Puerto Rico, I would go for this one.

puerto rico hotel

It is located between Puerto Rico itself and the neighbouring Playa de Amadores, so you have 2 good sandy beaches to choose from 😉

Continuing, let’s delve into some more hotels in Puerto Rico’s heart.

Marina Suites in Puerto Rico is the epitome of luxury and comfort.

The hotel sits right next to the charming harbour, offering a fabulous view of the bay and the beach.

Each suite is designed with a sense of elegance and comfort, many featuring balconies with breathtaking ocean views.

The facilities are also top-notch, from the elegant infinity pool to the well-equipped fitness centre and spa area.

Switching gears to a more budget-friendly option in Puerto Rico, Grupotel Revoli is a wonderful place to stay for those looking for quality without breaking the bank.

Grupotel Revoli, cheap and family-friendly hotel in Puerto Rico

Centrally located in the heart of Puerto Rico, the hotel is just a short walk from the beach and downtown.

One of the hotel’s most popular facilities is its large swimming pool, surrounded by sun loungers and parasols – a perfect place to unwind and swim.

If you’re travelling with kids, Grupotel Revoli is also a hit.

Grupotel Revoli, room with a view of Puerto Rico

It offers rooms designed to accommodate up to two children, making it an extremely family-friendly lodging option.

While Grupotel Revoli may not have the luxurious feel that some of the pricier hotels in the area offer, it doesn’t compromise comfort or service.

The rooms are clean well-furnished, and include basic amenities to ensure a pleasant stay.

4. Arguineguin – best area for families looking for a calm atmosphere 🌅

If you are looking for a town on Gran Canaria that is smaller and with a slightly more relaxed pace, then Arguineguin is an excellent choice.

Here we are talking about an old fishing village, which has also experienced a boom in tourism, but in a different way than, for example, Maspalomas and Puerto Rico, which for many decades have lived 100% from tourism.

In Arguineguin, it is quieter, but still plenty of hotels, restaurants and shops.

Se the best hotels in Arguineguin here.

Get an impression of the city here:

So it’s not because you won’t meet other tourists here, but it’s a good choice for those of you who might just want to stay at the hotel, go for a few walks in the city or rent a car and drive to the other areas on day trips.

We stayed here as a family when I was a child one winter, and it was an excellent experience.

Places to stay in Arguineguin

Let’s explore some of the best places to stay in Arguineguin. I’ll start with a resort perfect for those who want to fully relax on their trip to Gran Canaria.

Bull Dorado Beach & Spa in Arguineguin is the obvious choice for those looking to kick back and enjoy their vacation without hassle.

Bull Dorado, All-Inclusive Hotel Gran Canaria

This all-inclusive hotel ensures you have everything you need from the moment you check-in. All you have to do is relax and enjoy your stay.

The hotel is renowned for its high level of service, comfortable rooms, and top-notch facilities.

bull dorado spa

And with the all-inclusive concept, you won’t have to worry about daily meals or activities; everything is included in the price.

Bull Dorado Beach & Spa is an effortless and convenient place to stay in Arguineguin, especially for those who desire a hassle-free vacation.

Another vital advantage is the hotel’s spa facilities, where you can indulge in various treatments that make you feel like a new person.

And for those who wish to stay active, there are plenty of options, from the fitness centre to various water sports activities.

Arguineguin Park by Servatur is an excellent choice for families and those wanting comfort and space during their stay.

Arguineguin Park By Servatur, good place to stay for families with children

The hotel stands out with its large rooms, many of which have their own kitchens. This gives a sense of homey comfort and is incredibly practical, especially if you’re travelling with children.

But fear not if you’d rather skip cooking; the hotel also has restaurants.

Arguineguin Park By Servatur area

The hotel offers a range of activities and facilities that appeal to both adults and children.

There are swimming pools, playgrounds, and entertainment options to ensure that the younger family members always have something to do, while the adults can enjoy a drink by the pool bar or relax in the hotel’s well-maintained garden areas.

See more photos and book here.

Servatur Green Beach is an excellent place to stay for those looking for a budget-friendly hotel without compromising on location or comfort.

Servatur Green Beach, cheap hotel Arguineguin

The hotel is beautifully located by the sea, allowing you to enjoy the sound of the waves and the fresh sea breeze from your balcony.

However, you’ll need to walk a short distance to get to the nearest beach.

Even though the hotel is budget-friendly, it doesn’t mean you’ll have to forego good facilities.

Ocean view from the pool Servatur Green Beach

There is a large swimming pool, a snack bar (and restaurant), and even a small gym if you want to stay active during your vacation.

So, this is a good choice for those who want to be close to the sea and don’t require the luxury that pricier hotels offer but still want a comfortable and pleasant stay in Arguineguin.

See more photos and book here.

I hope you can use this guide to find the best areas of Gran Canaria for you to stay.

I have tried to mention places that could be something for all types of travellers and include my personal experiences.

If you’re looking for classic sightseeing and perhaps don’t want to lie by the pool as much, consider also staying in Las Palmas, the island’s “capital”.

If you are looking for nature experiences, Tejeda in the middle of the island up in the mountains is recommended.

What is the best time of year to visit Gran Canaria?

The best time to visit Gran Canaria depends on what you want to do. If you’re looking for sunny beach days, the summer months (June-August) are ideal. If you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, spring (March-May) or fall (September-November) can be a good choice. I’m from Denmark, and Gran Canaria is incredibly popular as a destination in the winter months when we don’t get much sunshine up here in Scandinavia – so honestly, Gran Canaria is good year around.

In this travel guide to Fuerteventura, I talk about the best areas and give good tips for where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Fuerteventura is the second largest Canary Island, so there is a big difference in where you choose to book the hotel on this beautiful island.

I have been to Fuerteventura a couple of times and must admit frankly that I love the island. Landing on Fuerteventura in December, being greeted by 22 degrees of sunny heat and then just enjoying a glimpse of summer on the Canary Islands – it’s absolutely outstanding.

So I envy you who are looking for the best area to stay in Fuerteventura. I am sure that you will have a good trip.

And with that – let’s get started with the guide to where to stay in Fuerteventura.

Best areas to stay

Best areas to stay in Fuerteventura

If you’re in a rush and want the quick rundown, here are the best places to stay in Fuerteventura:

Click the name above and see the best hotels in the area.

The guide continues below, where I’ll tell you more about the areas and recommend some of my favourite hotels in Fuerteventura.

1. Corralejo – the best area ⭐

To that extent, I recommend staying in Corralejo when you travel to Fuerteventura – the city surprised me very positively on all parameters and is only about a 45-minute drive from the airport.

corralejo, the best place to stay in Fuerteventura

As a child, I have experienced several classic tourist destinations on charter holidays, e.g. Mallorca, Crete and Cyprus and perhaps little expected Corralejo to be the same story.

Fair must be fair: Corralejo is also a town with lots of tourism, but there was still a completely different local soul than in “just another charter town”.

There are many excellent local cafes, restaurants and bars, while the town is small enough that you can easily walk around the city without taking a taxi or public transport.

Corralejo has several sandy beaches – even one right in the city centre. At the same time, there are ferry connections to Lanzarote and Lobos island if you want to explore more than just Fuerteventura.

See the best hotels in Corralejo here.

My favourite beach is Playa de los Verilitos, where there are also several beach bars, so you can have a small draft beer in the sun.

Just south of Corralejo lies Dunas de Corralejo, which is a vast desert area with dunes right next to the coast.

kristoffer fons fuerteventura
Yours truly on Fuerteventura in the sand dunes south of Corralejo

We rented bikes one day and rode around down there – it can be recommended to that extent.

In other words, Corralejo is the perfect area for those who want to be close to a relatively large city with plenty to do, good beaches and plenty of hotels to choose from.

I recommend Corralejo both for families with children, couples as well as single travellers of all ages.

Places to stay in Corralejo

Personally, I have looked at this hotel in Corralejo that I am considering for my next trip to the Canary Islands.

It’s centrally located, gets excellent reviews and generally looks like a really good choice.

Below, I’ve gathered a few more of my top picks for accommodation.

Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa in Corralejo is the ideal luxury hotel if you’re looking for an adult-only getaway close to the beach, vibrant city life, and stunning nature.

Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa, luxury place to stay in Corralejo Fuerteventura

The resort is near the breathtaking sand dunes south of the town, offering a perfect backdrop for romance or relaxation.

The rooms here are spacious and elegantly designed, a feature frequently praised by previous guests in their reviews.

Secrets Bahía Real Resort & Spa indoor pool

When it comes to unwinding, the hotel boasts an unparalleled spa and wellness area that fully lives up to its five-star status.

Previous guests particularly commend the calming atmosphere, excellent location, and diverse activities.

If you’re looking for a holiday in Corralejo with attention to detail, this is the place for you.

Playa Park Zensation is the place to be if you want to combine a relaxed atmosphere with a generous dose of luxury.

Playa Park Zensation, good hotel in Corralejo

Located in the heart of Corralejo, this hotel gives you easy access to the beach and the lively town.

Previous guests are smitten with the hotel’s modern vibe and various pool areas, catering to all preferences – from quiet oases to lively atmospheres.

Playa Park Zensation, indoor spa hotel

When you feel like taking it easy, you can indulge in a well-equipped spa area, inviting pampering and deep relaxation.

So even if the weather disappoints (for example, if you’re visiting Fuerteventura in the winter and are unlucky), you can still enjoy the indoor wellness area.

Bristol Sunset Beach is just the ticket if you seek high quality without breaking the bank.

The hotel consistently receives high ratings from previous guests, particularly for its excellent value for money.

People love the modern, well-equipped apartments and the relaxed atmosphere.

I recently stayed at Alua Suites in Corralejo, which was horrible – check out my Alua Suites Fuerteventura review to see my photos.

2. Caleta de Fuste – best area for families with children 👨‍👩‍👦

If we have to choose an area on Fuerteventura as the most family-friendly, then the award must go to Caleta de Fuste.

The town is located on the island’s east coast, approximately 7 km south of the airport, so the airport transfer is over in a very short time, and the holiday can begin.

caleta de fuste, best ares to stay with children
The fantastic beach of Caleta de Fuste

The holiday area is also known as El Castillo, as the town’s beach is named after Playa de Castillo and is a natural landmark in the resort town.

See the best hotels in Caleta de Fuste here.

The beach is well protected inside a cove, which is why there are not as violent waves as there can be in other places on Fuerteventura, which are known to have a lot of wind.

This is why this place is perfect for those who travel to Fuerteventura with children and want to let the youngest frolic in the water on the sandy beach.

It is a more traditional holiday town, where the pace is completely slowed down and the whole area is packed with child-friendly hotels.

With its location roughly in the middle of Fuerteventura, Caleta de Fuste is also an excellent starting point for those who want to rent a car or go on excursions to other places on the island.

Places to stay in Caleta de Fuste

Below, I’m sharing a few of my favourite hotels in Caleta de Fuste, ensuring options across various price ranges. Let’s start with one of the best hotels in Fuerteventura’s excellent, family-friendly area.

Barceló Fuerteventura Royal Level is a superb beachfront hotel that can be booked by either couples or families with children.

Although it’s located a bit outside the centre of Caleta de Fuste, you get a fantastic beach right by the hotel.

3. Puerto del Rosario – the capital of Fuerteventura 🏛

The capital of Fuerteventura is called Puerto del Rosario, and for many will be a slightly unconventional choice of area for the trip.

Puerto del Rosario, fuerteventura

This is different from where you should book the hotel if you dream of a classic sun holiday, but the city could be a good choice for anyone travelling to Fuerteventura and might like to stay in several places on the trip.

Puerto del Rosario is where you experience what you can call the real Fuerteventura. This is an authentic Spanish city with all that it entails.

In fact, Playa del Rosario also has a beach that is relatively newly renovated, so you can also play beach lion while enjoying all that the big city has to offer – a bit like in Barcelona, but of course, on a significantly smaller scale here in the city, where there are only just under 30,000 inhabitants.

As this is the main city on Fuerteventura, you can easily get around the rest of the island by public transport.

Therefore it can be a suitable place to stay if you want to experience local culture and easily get around to other areas of the Canaries.

And then you are again super close to the island’s airport!

See the best hotels in Puerto del Rosario here.

Places to stay in Puerto del Rosario

As mentioned earlier, this city might not be the obvious choice if you’re visiting Fuerteventura in the summer, but during other seasons, there are plenty of exciting experiences to be had here.

So, let me introduce you to some of the best hotels in Puerto del Rosario. We’ll start with a small, cosy place that’s close to everything.

Bed & Breakfast Descanso y Relax in Puerto del Rosario has what you’re looking for if you’re searching for a cosy place to stay in the heart of Fuerteventura’s capital.

Bed & Breakfast Descanso y Relax

This B&B is small, intimate, and close to everything the city offers. While you won’t find pool areas and fancy restaurants here, you will get an authentic experience and a place that feels like home.

Previous guests are particularly fond of the location. Being close to shopping, culture, and city life makes this B&B an ideal choice if you want to experience more than just the beach and sun.

It is the perfect springboard for exploring the city’s cafes, markets, and nightlife.

See more photos and book here.

If you’re looking for a bit of luxury and dream of waking up to the sound of the sea, El Mirador de Fuerteventura has precisely what you’re missing.

El Mirador de Fuerteventura room

This hotel is excellent for those who want to enjoy the big city and the sea.

It’s not located in the heart of Puerto del Rosario but a little outside, where the breathtaking ocean views make it all worthwhile.

The hotel is consistently delightful and a pleasure to stay at.

Previous guests can’t get enough of the sublime ocean views and the tranquillity of being outside the city.

El Mirador de Fuerteventura restaurant with sea views

Many mention that it’s worth the money, especially if you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

If you want to combine the best of two worlds – the city’s culture and the endless sea – then El Mirador de Fuerteventura is an excellent place to stay.

See more photos and book here.

4. Costa Calma – best area with the most beautiful beaches 🏖

Then we go a little further south to Costa Calma, about an hour’s drive from the airport at Puerto del Rosario.

costa calma, best beach area in Fuerteventura

Costa Calma is a popular holiday area, and for some reason, it is particularly popular with travellers from Germany 😀

Maybe a little ala Agia Marina in Crete is popular with us travellers from Denmark, but in any case, you can count on bumping into a German or two if you choose to hotel in the Costa Calma area.

See the best hotels in the Costa Calma area here.

You should choose Costa Calma if you want to stay in slightly quieter surroundings than Corralejo. As the name suggests, this area is calmer – not much happens here, but many beautiful sandy beaches exist.

So Costa Calma will be a good area for you who want to come down to sun, warmth and some of the best beaches.

Places to stay in Costa Calma

There are some charming hotels in Costa Calma, so if you’re looking for some of the best hotels in Fuerteventura, it’s an excellent place to stay.

Here are a couple of my favourite hotels in Costa Calma.

If you’re the type who settles for nothing less regarding vacations, then H10 Tindaya is just right for you.

H10 TIndaya, best place to stay in Costa Calma Fuerteventura

This hotel in Costa Calma is not just a place to stay; it’s an experience in itself. Imagine no less than five outdoor pools, paddle tennis courts, and a massive water park for the kids.

And the best part? It’s all located right by the famous beach in Costa Calma.

Costa Calma Beach
The hotels has their own sunbeds by the beach.

Previous guests are particularly focused on the hotel’s impressive amenities and immediate beach access.

The hotel features 5 pools, so you can choose whether you want to be where the children are playing or where couples are relaxing.

Children's Pool

Many mention that it’s a hit for families, but couples and solo travellers can also find their own little paradise here.

In short, H10 Tindaya offers something for every taste, and you don’t even need to leave the hotel to have a fantastic vacation.

See more photos and book here.

Bahía Calma Beach could be your go-to choice in Costa Calma if you’re looking for an excellent hotel that can often be booked at cheaper prices than many competitors in the area.

Bahía Calma Beach, nice pool hotel in Costa Calma

This hotel matches the more expensive competitors with its fantastic location right by the beach.

Even though it’s a cheaper alternative, many previous guests feel they get a lot of value for their money here.

Bahia Calma Beach room

You still get high-quality comfort and amenities, making your stay memorable.

So, if you want to enjoy Costa Calma’s beautiful beach without emptying your wallet entirely, Bahía Calma Beach is a safe choice.

See more photos and book here.

If you’re looking for a more all-inclusive experience with a touch of luxury, SBH Costa Calma Palace Thalasso & Spa could be the perfect place to stay in Costa Calma.

SBH Costa Calma Palace Thalasso & Spa pool by the beach

This large hotel is located next to the enchanting beach and offers you many amenities.

The hotel’s significant attractions include the indoor pool and luxurious spa area.

indoor pool and spa hotel in Costa Calma

So, even on a colder day, you can still get your daily dose of water and wellness.

Previous guests often mention that even though the hotel isn’t brand new, it’s maintained in a condition that exudes quality and comfort.

Many also praise the wide range of amenities and the luxury that pervades the place.

See more photos and book here.

You can also book the hotel in areas like Jandia and Morra Jable, located further south of Costa Calma.

Fuerteventura has much to offer all over the island, but it is generally said that the most beautiful sandy beaches are in the south.

I hope you were able to use this travel guide for where to stay in Fuerteventura and are now ready to book your hotel.

2. La Malagueta – stay by the Beach in Malaga 🏖

La Malagueta is a popular area to stay in as a tourist in Malaga.

With its ideal location close to the beach, this is a perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy the beach while still having easy access to the centre of Malaga.

The area has one of the city’s most famous beaches, La Malagueta, and several cosy cafes, bars, and restaurants along the promenade.

See the best hotels in La Malagueta here.

There is also a wide range of water sports and beach activities you can engage in.

Compared to some of the busier areas of Malaga, La Malagueta is known for its relaxing atmosphere and is an ideal place to stay for tourists who want to combine beach life with the city’s charming and cultural atmosphere.

At the same time, you are not far from the historic centre, as you can easily walk there quickly (depending on precisely where your hotel in La Malagueta is located).

If you’ve been to Barcelona, the area is comparable to La Barceloneta, which is also right by the city’s beach.

Places to stay near the beach in Malaga

Malaga is popular as a holiday destination all year round, but it’s especially in the warm months when you can go to the beach that tourists flock to the Spanish city.

Therefore, it makes good sense to stay by the beach in Malaga – here are some of my favourite beach hotels in Malaga.

Gran Hotel Miramar GL is located right by the beach in La Malagueta. This five-star hotel combines comfort and class in the best way.

The rooms are cosy and inviting, and the pool area with sea views is a definite highlight. If you fancy a dip in the sea, the beach is just a stone’s throw away.

3. Soho – the Trendy & Cool Area 🍹

If you want to experience Malaga’s more trendy and creative side, Soho is a fantastic place for tourists to stay.

Soho is an artistic area that has been renovated in recent years and is now home to the city’s coolest galleries, shops, and trendy eateries.

It’s quite similar to what we know of Soho in London and New York City.

See the best hotels in Soho here.

The area is filled with creative and alternative cafes, bars, and restaurants, and the colourful streets are brimming with life and energy.

Soho in Malaga is known for its cosy shops selling everything from clothes and crafts to inventive souvenirs.

One of the best tapas restaurants in Soho is Mesón Ibérico, popular among both tourists and locals.

You can also easily walk from Soho to La Malagueta and the historic centre.

It’s a great area to stay in Malaga if you’re interested in experiencing the most trendy bars and restaurants.

Places to stay in Soho

Soho is trendy and cool, but it’s also right next to Malaga’s historic centre. So, staying in Soho doesn’t mean you’re compromising on being “close to everything”. Some hotels are even cheaper than those in Centro.

Here are some of my favourite hotels in Malaga’s Soho area:

Mariposa Hotel in Soho is a place where you can really feel the city’s vibe. The hotel is super nice, and the rooms are inviting.

But the best part? Their rooftop terrace!

From here, you get a fantastic view of the city, and it’s the perfect place to relax after a day of sightseeing.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Is it better to stay in Malaga or Marbella?

Choosing between Malaga and Marbella depends on what kind of holiday experience you’re looking for. Both locations have their pros and cons, so here’s a quick rundown:
Marbella:
Pros:
Beach Resort Vibe: Marbella is one of the Costa del Sol’s most famous resort towns, renowned for its luxurious atmosphere and beautiful beaches.
High-End Options: If you’re looking for a high-end, luxurious holiday, Marbella has a wide range of five-star hotels, high-end shopping, and gourmet dining options.
Nightlife: Marbella is famous for its vibrant nightlife, including beach clubs and bars that attract a glamorous crowd.
Golf: For those interested in golf, Marbella and its surroundings offer some of the best golf courses in Spain.
Cons:
Pricey: Marbella tends to be more expensive than Malaga, especially in the high season.
Tourist-Centric: While beautiful, Marbella is a resort town through and through, meaning it might lack some of the cultural depth you’d find in a larger city.

Malaga:
Pros:
Cultural Activities: Malaga is not just a beach city but also the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. It offers a variety of museums, historic sites, and cultural activities.
Dining and Shopping: Malaga has a broader range of dining and shopping options compared to Marbella, suitable for all budgets.
Transport Links: Being a larger city, Malaga has better transport links, including an international airport and better bus and train services for exploring other parts of Andalusia.
Urban Beach Experience: Malaga does have beaches, so you can still enjoy a beach holiday along with all the other amenities of a city.
Cons:
Crowded: Malaga can get very crowded, especially in the summer months.
Less Exclusive: If you’re looking for a more exclusive, resort-type environment, Malaga’s beaches may not meet your expectations.
Summary
For a Luxurious Beach Holiday: If you’re looking for a luxurious, 100% relaxed beach holiday with high-end amenities, Marbella might be more to your liking.
For a Mixed Experience: If you want a mix of beach time, cultural experiences, dining, and shopping, then Malaga could offer a more balanced holiday.

Ultimately, both destinations offer wonderful experiences; it just depends on what kind of vacation you’re aiming for.

What is the best time to visit Malaga?

The best time to visit Malaga is typically from April to June or September to November. These months are usually less crowded than during the peak high season, and the weather is still excellent.

How many days should I spend in Malaga?

I recommend at least 2-3 days in the city, but you might consider staying longer if you wish to visit several nearby towns or beaches and go on longer day trips. Using Malaga as a base and taking day trips to the many exciting areas nearby is a good idea.

Is Malaga a safe city to visit?

Yes, Malaga is generally a safe city to visit. As with any tourist destination, one should take the usual precautions and be aware of one’s surroundings and belongings.
