Having visited Stockholm thrice, I’ve really gotten to know this gorgeous Nordic capital. As a Dane who frequently hops across the Øresund, I’m excited to share my updated guide to Stockholm’s best attractions and hidden gems.

  • After my latest visit in late 2024, I’ve added several new spots you won’t want to miss.

Let’s get right into the guide on the best things to do in Stockholm.

Must-See Attractions

1. Gamla Stan

old town stockholm

Every time I visit Stockholm, I find myself drawn back to Gamla Stan. What was once the city’s slum is now one of its most charming quarters.

During my last visit, I spent a whole morning just wandering the cobbled streets, popping into little cafes, and discovering new corners I’d missed before. The transformation of this area over the years has been remarkable.

The narrow, winding streets remind me a bit of Copenhagen‘s old town, but with their own distinct Swedish character.

I particularly love exploring early in the morning before the crowds arrive, when you can really appreciate the ochre-coloured buildings and peaceful atmosphere.

2. Vasa Museum

The Vasa Museum remains my favourite museum in Stockholm. Seeing this massive 17th-century warship up close never gets old – even on my third visit, I spent hours examining the intricate details.

The story of its sinking on its maiden voyage and resurrection after 300 years underwater is fascinating.

Pro tip: Book your tickets online – it’s gotten much busier since my first visit. I’d recommend arriving right when it opens at 10:00 to avoid the largest crowds.

3. Royal Palace (Kungliga Slottet)

The Royal Palace has become even more interesting since my first visit, with new areas opened to the public. I particularly enjoyed the Royal Armoury during my latest trip – they’ve added some brilliant interactive displays about Swedish royal history.

The changing of the guard ceremony is still a must-see. In summer, it’s accompanied by a military band and mounted cavalry – quite a spectacle! I’d recommend getting there at least 15 minutes early to secure a good viewing spot.

4. ABBA: The Museum

Being Scandinavian, I almost feel obligated to love ABBA – and this museum makes it easy! It’s incredibly well done, and they keep updating the interactive experiences.

abba museum, one of the best things to do in stockholm

On my last visit, I tried their new virtual reality feature where you can ‘perform’ with the band.

Yes, I made a fool of myself attempting Dancing Queen, and it was worth it! 😀

Get tickets for the Abba Museum here.

5. New in 2024: AVICII Experience

avicii experience stockholm

During my latest visit, I checked out the new AVICII Experience in Space Stockholm. As someone who grew up with Swedish music, this interactive museum really moved me.

You can mix your own versions of Tim Bergling‘s tracks, and the exhibits about his life and impact on music are beautifully done. The immersive audio experience is particularly powerful – bring tissues if you’re an AVICII fan.

Get tickets here.

6. Vrak – Museum of Wrecks

This is Stockholm’s newest maritime museum, and it’s fantastic. While the Vasa Museum shows you one ship in incredible detail, Vrak tells the broader story of the Baltic Sea’s underwater cultural heritage.

The technology they use to show shipwrecks is mind-blowing – I spent ages playing with their 3D visualisation tools.

7. Fotografiska

Fotografiska keeps getting better with each visit. This photography museum consistently hosts world-class exhibitions, and they’ve recently expanded their top-floor restaurant, which offers one of the best views in Stockholm.

I had a memorable dinner there on my last visit.

8. DjurgÄrden

This island is becoming my favourite part of Stockholm. Beyond housing several museums (including the Vasa Museum and ABBA Museum), it’s a beautiful place for a walk.

On my last visit, I rented a bike and spent an afternoon cycling around the island, stopping at Rosendals TrÀdgÄrdskafé for their famous cinnamon buns.

9. Skansen

Skansen remains one of Stockholm’s most unique attractions. As the world’s oldest open-air museum, it offers a fascinating glimpse into Swedish life through the centuries.

During my last visit in late 2024, I noticed they’ve added several new exhibits about sustainable living and traditional crafts.

The Nordic zoo section is particularly great if you’re travelling with kids – seeing moose and reindeer up close is always a highlight.

10. Södermalm

Södermalm, cool part of stockholm

As a Copenhagener, Södermalm feels like home – it reminds me a bit of Vesterbro (which is one of the best areas in Copenhagen). This trendy island has only gotten cooler since my first visit.

The vintage shops along Götgatan are brilliant for unique finds, and the cafe scene keeps evolving.

New Food Spots and Markets

Aira Restaurant

On my latest trip, I treated myself to dinner at Aira on DjurgĂ„rden. Yes, it’s pricey (even by Scandinavian standards!), but this two-Michelin-starred restaurant offers a unique take on Nordic cuisine. The seafood dishes are particularly outstanding, and the waterfront setting is magical at sunset.

Söderhallarna Food Hall

While Östermalms Saluhall will always have my heart, the newly renovated Söderhallarna in Södermalm has become my go-to lunch spot. It reminds me a bit of our Torvehallerne in Copenhagen, but with its own distinctly Swedish character. Don’t miss the new craft coffee roastery and the brilliant Swedish pastry stand.

K-MĂ€rkt Garnisonen

This sustainable restaurant has quickly become one of my Stockholm favourites. They focus on Swedish ingredients and traditional recipes with modern twists. The lunch menu changes daily, and the value is excellent for Stockholm prices.

Portal Deli

A more casual offshoot of the acclaimed Restaurant Portal, this deli serves some of the best sandwiches I’ve had in Stockholm. Perfect for a quick lunch between sightseeing. Their Swedish meatball sandwich is a modern take on the classic dish.

Outdoor Activities and Nature 🏞

Stockholm Archipelago Tours

stockholm cruise

The boat tours keep getting better. On my last visit, I took a new sustainable electric boat tour of the archipelago. It’s quieter than the traditional boats and includes an excellent audio guide about the archipelago’s ecosystem.

The three-hour tour is perfect – long enough to see plenty but short enough to fit into a busy sightseeing day.

See more & get tickets here.

Kayaking

One of my favourite Stockholm experiences remains kayaking through the city’s waterways. There’s a new operator offering sunrise kayak tours, which I tried last summer – seeing the city wake up from the water is magical.

They provide all equipment and even serve Swedish breakfast afterwards.

Eco-Walking Tours

Stockholm has introduced several new self-guided walking tours focusing on the city’s sustainability initiatives.

I followed the “Green Queen” route through Södermalm, which showcases urban farming projects, green buildings, and sustainable businesses. You can download the route map from the official Visit Stockholm app.

Practical Tips and Updates 🇾đŸ‡Ș

Getting Around

Stockholm’s public transport keeps getting better. The new express train from Arlanda is brilliant – faster and more comfortable than the older service. Within the city, they’ve expanded the subway system and introduced a new digital payment system.

  • You can now use contactless cards or mobile payments on all public transport.

Best Time to Visit

While summer remains popular, I’ve grown to love visiting Stockholm in early autumn (September-October). The crowds are smaller, the colours in the parks are beautiful, and you can still enjoy outdoor activities. Plus, many restaurants launch new seasonal menus during this time.

Money-Saving Tips

  • The Go City Stockholm Pass is worth it if you plan to visit 3+ attractions per day
  • Many museums are free on Wednesday evenings
  • Download the “Too Good To Go” app for discounted restaurant meals
  • Consider staying in emerging neighbourhoods like Sundbyberg or Hornstull for better hotel rates

Where to Stay

After trying various areas over my visits, here are my recommended neighbourhoods:

Södermalm

My personal favourite area and perfect for first-time visitors. Hip, relaxed, and full of great cafes and bars. Check out Hotel Rival if your budget allows – it’s owned by ABBA’s Benny Andersson and beautifully designed.

Östermalm

Great for luxury shopping and high-end restaurants. The area around Stureplan is perfect if you want to be close to Stockholm’s best nightlife.

Gamla Stan

Staying in the old town is magical, especially in the early morning and late evening when the day-trippers leave. Just be prepared for slightly higher prices and some street noise.

Check out my full guide on where to stay in Stockholm for my in-depth thoughts and hotel recommendations.

I’ve also got a guide to the best spa hotels in Stockholm – there are some really nice places!

Seasonal Events and Activities

Stockholm in the summer

Summer (June-August)

  • Midsummer celebrations in Skansen (June)
  • Stockholm Culture Festival (August)
  • Open-air concerts at Gröna Lund
  • New rooftop bars in Södermalm

Autumn (September-November)

  • Stockholm Design Week
  • Restaurant Week (October)
  • Stockholm Film Festival
  • Brilliant autumn colours in DjurgĂ„rden

Winter (December-February)

  • Christmas markets in Gamla Stan
  • Ice skating in KungstrĂ€dgĂ„rden
  • Nobel Week (December)
  • Winter Light Festival (new for 2024)

Spring (March-May)

  • Cherry blossoms in KungstrĂ€dgĂ„rden
  • Stockholm Creative Edition

Stockholm has evolved significantly since my first visit over 10 years ago, but it retains that special Scandinavian charm that makes it one of my favourite cities to visit. Whether you’re into history, design, food, or just enjoying fika like a local, you’ll find something to love here.

I update this guide regularly based on my visits, and this version reflects my experiences through late 2024. As always, check official websites for the most current opening hours and prices.

Frequently asked questions:

What are the absolute must-see attractions in Stockholm?

If you’re short on time, I’d recommend focusing on:
1. Gamla Stan (old town)
2. Vasa Museum
3. Royal Palace
4. ABBA Museum
5. Fotografiska

How many days do you need in Stockholm?

I recommend at least three full days to see the main attractions. Five days would be ideal to explore more thoroughly and take a day trip to the archipelago.

What’s the best area to stay in Stockholm?

For first-time visitors, I recommend Södermalm or Gamla Stan. Both areas are central and offer plenty of restaurants and attractions within walking distance.

Is Stockholm expensive?

Yes, like most Scandinavian cities, Stockholm can be expensive. However, there are ways to save money:
– Use the Go City Stockholm Pass for attractions
– Eat lunch at restaurants rather than dinner (lunch menus are cheaper)
– Stay in hostels or hotels slightly outside the centre
– Use public transport instead of taxis

Stockholm is an underrated travel destination, as the Swedish capital is perfect for a city break.

In this travel guide, I will look closer at where to stay in Stockholm for the best experience.

Stockholm is a big city, but the centre is relatively compact, so if you stay centrally, you can walk around to many of the city’s best things to do.

I’m from Copenhagen, close to Sweden, so I’ve been to Stockholm several times and know the city well. Below, I will go through the four best areas to stay in Stockholm as a tourist.

So let’s get started with the guide: where to stay in Stockholm? đŸ‘‡đŸ»

Best areas in Stockholm

guide on the best places to stay in Stockholm from an expert

If you’re in a rush and want the highlights – here are the best places to stay in Stockholm for different types of travellers:

  • Gamla Stan – where to stay for first-timers & most normal tourists
  • Norrmalm – where to stay if you want to be in the city centre
  • Södermalm – where to stay for hipsters and trendy vibes
  • Östermalm – where to stay for families with children

The guide on where to stay in Stockholm continues below.

1. Gamla Stan – where to to stay for first-time visitors ⭐

Gamla Stan is, without a doubt, the best area to stay in when travelling to Stockholm as a tourist.

When searching for pictures of Stockholm or looking for which sights to experience in the Swedish capital, Gamla Stan undoubtedly appears.

  • Gamla Stan translates to Old Town.
Gamla Stan, the best area to stay in Stockholm

It’s like with Nyhavn in Copenhagen: you can’t travel to Stockholm without experiencing Gamla Stan.

Therefore, it makes perfect sense to stay in this area, as you’ll be within walking distance of most of Stockholm’s main attractions and quickly get from Arlanda Airport to your hotel.

Get the best rates on hotels in Gamla Stan here.

Gamla Stan is located on its a small island south of Norrmalm (which is the next area on the list) and has sights such as:

  • Stockholm Palace
  • Riksdagen (the parliament building)
  • Riddarholmen Church
  • The Nobel Museum and numerous fantastic small shops, restaurants and cafes.

In other words, Gamla Stan is the perfect area to stay when heading to Stockholm.

Get a feel for the vibe in Stockholm’s Old Town in this video:

Places to stay in Gamla Stan

There are plenty of hotels to choose from, so there are plenty of options. The only downside to the area may be that hotel prices can be pushed up if you’re travelling during peak season.

However, my advice is that if you can find space in your budget, consider a hotel in Gamla Stan.

good hotel in gamla stan, stockholm's old town

Specifically, I can recommend this fantastic 4-star hotel in Gamla Stan.

This is an excellent hotel with complimentary breakfast, a fitness centre, and a location just a few minutes walk from Stortorget in Gamla Stan. It doesn’t get much better than this.

scandic gamla stan stockholm

A slightly cheaper alternative could be Scandic Gamla Stan, a 4-star hotel in the heart of Gamla Stan.

The hotel receives good reviews, and as always with a Scandic hotel, you know what you’re getting: excellent service and nice, clean rooms.

cheap hotel in Stockholm old town
Stay in a cheap hotel in Stockholm’s Old Town – on a boat!

Finding cheap hotels in Gamla Stan is difficult, but the best bet is probably MĂ€lardrottningen Hotel, a 3-star hotel with excellent reviews from previous guests.

This hotel on a boat might be particularly suitable for those looking for an untraditional place to stay in Stockholm.

Victory Hotel stands out with its nautical-themed decor and maritime antiques.

Victory Hotel Stockholm, good place to stay in Gamla Stan

Located in the heart of the Old Town, it offers easy access to major attractions like the Royal Palace and Stortorget. Guests appreciate the hotel’s excellent breakfast and the friendly, helpful staff.

This hotel is perfect for history enthusiasts seeking a central and character-filled stay.

See more photos & book here.

As I said – I recommend staying in Gamla Stan for first-time travellers to Stockholm, but it’s a small area, so it might be hard to find a hotel in peak season.

So let’s look at another fantastic area to stay in Stockholm for first-timers and tourists.

2. Norrmalm – stay in the city centre close to everything 🏹

Norrmalm is just a short walk across the bridge to the north from Gamla Stan, where you’ll find what could be called Stockholm City Centre.

If you stay in Norrmalm, you’re guaranteed to be in the centre of Stockholm and can easily travel to other areas you wish to explore.

See the best hotels in Norrmalm here.

Norrmalm, stay in the city centre of Stockholm

Much like Gamla Stan, there are plenty of shops, cafes, restaurants, and bars here – precisely what you’d expect from a modern capital the size of Stockholm.

This is also where the city’s central train station (Centralstationen) is located.

In my opinion, Norrmalm is the second-best area to stay in Stockholm.

Gamla Stan is more charming with its old buildings, but Norrmalm is a good alternative, and it may be easier to find a cheaper hotel here since both the area and the selection are larger.

Places to stay in Norrmalm

There are, of course, plenty of good hotels in Norrmalm – both luxury and slightly cheaper alternatives.

Elite Adlon, good hotel in Norrmalm

Suppose you’d like to stay at one of the better hotels in Norrmalm.

In that case, I recommend Elite Hotel Adlon, a 4-star hotel with various room types, providing excellent accommodation options for families with children, couples, and solo travellers.

Grand Hotel, best luxury hotel in Stockholm

If you want to stay at one of the most luxurious hotels in Stockholm, with a swimming pool, four restaurants, rooms overlooking Stockholm’s harbour, and a spa area, then book your stay at Grand Hîtel Stockholm.

It’s undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Norrmalm and probably all of Stockholm. So, this is a great option if you want to stay at a luxury hotel in Stockholm.

However, there are also many cheap hotels in Norrmalm. One of the best and most conveniently located is Comfort Hotel Xpress Stockholm Central.

Comfort Hotel Xpress, cheap hotel in Stockholm City Centre

The hotel is next to Stockholm Central Station, the city’s largest train station and a great hub to stay at if you want to go around and experience a lot in the Swedish capital.

Just be aware when choosing a room at the hotel – the cheapest rooms don’t have windows, which is the primary reason the hotel doesn’t score top marks from previous guests.

It’s clearly stated when booking, so if you don’t want to stay in a cheap room without a window, choose one of the other options.

And then it’s one of the best cheap hotels in Stockholm city centre.

See more pictures and book online here.

Queen’s Hotel by First Hotels has a super central location, and the price isn’t too bad either.

Queen's Hotel Stockholm

This central location provides easy access to shops, restaurants, and cultural attractions. The hotel combines comfort and affordability, making it a solid choice for budget-conscious travellers.

Reviews often mention the clean, spacious rooms and the welcoming staff.

See more photos & book here.

3. Södermalm – stay in Stockholm’s hipster area đŸ‘©đŸ»â€đŸŽš

On my first trip to Stockholm, I stayed in the Södermalm area south of Gamla Stan.

This is a more alternative part of the city than the two areas mentioned above.

It’s the cool hipster area all major European cities have, like Kreuzberg in Berlin, Vesterbro in Copenhagen, Shoreditch in London, etc.

Only much larger, thus giving a feeling of having more space around you.

See the best hotels in Södermalm here.

Södermalm, best area to stay in for trendy vibes

Södermalm is often on lists of the coolest areas in the world, and it’s undoubtedly where you’ll find the most hipster-like atmosphere in Stockholm.

With that comes lively nightlife, so if you’d like to go out and perhaps visit less traditional nightclubs, Södermalm is an excellent choice.

I would also choose Södermalm as a base if I were going to Stockholm with my partner, and we never go out on the town – so it’s not just because of the nightlife that you should choose to book a hotel in Södermalm.

By the way, I highly recommend walking up Mariaberget, where you’ll get a phenomenal view over Gamla Stan and the rest of central Stockholm.

To be close to the rest of Stockholm, I’d recommend choosing a hotel in the northern part of Södermalm.

Places to stay in Södermalm

Hotels in Södermalm are typically cheaper than in Gamla Stan and Norrmalm, so you can find some great deals here.

Scandic hotel Södermalm, good place to stay in the hipster area

I stayed at the Scandic Malmen Hotel, ideally located right next to the Medborgarplatsen square and where there’s also a metro station.

It was, by the way, somewhat cheaper than hotels further into the city centre 😉

Nofo Hotel, luxury hotel in Södermalm

If you’re looking for a more luxurious hotel in Södermalm, NOFO Hotel is perfect.

It’s a 4-star hotel that’s extremely nice and has a perfect location within walking distance to Gamla Stan, so even if you’re staying in Södermalm, you can quickly get to the many famous sights in central Stockholm.

Clarion Hotel in Södermalm, best value for money hotel

If you’re okay with staying in the southern part of Södermalm, you should consider checking out Clarion Hotel Stockholm.

It’s a surprisingly cheap place to stay in Stockholm when considering what you get for your money.

Clarion Hotel Södermalm

It’s a luxurious 4-star hotel with rooms overlooking the harbour, an indoor pool, and a cosy atmosphere.

The downside is that you’re a bit away from the city centre of Stockholm, but if you want to save money and stay at an excellent hotel, it’s a great option.

See more photos and book online here.

Citybox Stockholm, newly opened in 2024, is an affordable and practical place to stay in Stockholm for young travellers.

Citybox Stockholm, cheap hotel in Södermalm

The hotel features a minimalist design with essential amenities, providing clean, comfortable rooms without extra frills.

Reviews highlight the efficient self-check-in process and the communal areas, which are perfect for meeting fellow travellers. Citybox is an excellent hotel for those looking to experience the city on a budget.

See more photos & book here.

4. Östermalm – best area to stay for families with children đŸ‘šâ€đŸ‘©â€đŸ‘Š

Östermalm is located just east of Norrmalm (central Stockholm with Drottninggatan, the main shopping street).

Östermalm is slightly less busy than Norrmalm, so I’d consider it the perfect area in Stockholm if you’re travelling with children.

See the best hotels in Östermalm here.

östermalm, where to stay in Stockholm for families with kids

That being said, none of the areas in this guide on where to stay in Stockholm wouldn’t be suitable for families with children.

The most significant advantage might be that, in Östermalm, you’re close to DjurgĂ„rden and Gröna Lund, which is Stockholm’s equivalent to Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen – so an amusement park you can’t miss if you’re travelling with kids 🎱

Both are things to do in Stockholm I highly recommend. Many sightseeing boat tours pass by, and a sightseeing boat tour is a must when travelling to Stockholm.

In Östermalm, I can also recommend stopping by Saluhall, which is a great indoor food market.

Places to stay in Östermalm

There are many good hotels in Östermalm, and you’ll stay within walking distance of most things in central Stockholm, making it an excellent area for a city break.

It’s slightly cheaper to stay here in Östermalm than in the absolute centre of Norrmalm, so you typically get a bit more for your money here.

Elite Eden Park, great hotel in Östermalm

One of the best 4-star hotels in the area is Elite Eden Park Hotel.

It’s a good hotel with large rooms next to a lovely park in the city centre of Stockholm, so several rooms have a stunning view.

The Sparrow, luxury hotel in Östermalm

If you’re looking for a slightly more luxurious hotel in Östermalm, you might want to look at The Sparrow Hotel.

The hotel has everything you need to relax after a day of sightseeing in Stockholm – and it scores excellent ratings from previous guests, so it’s a safe choice if you want to stay in the best surroundings in Östermalm.

Best Western Hotel Karlaplan in Östermalm offers a blend of comfort and convenience in one of Stockholm’s most prestigious neighbourhoods.

Best Western Hotel Karlaplan

Previous guests often commend the hotel’s clean, well-appointed rooms and the hearty complimentary breakfast.

The proximity to the metro station and peaceful surroundings make it suitable for both leisure and business travellers looking for a comfortable stay in an upscale area.

I hope you found this travel guide helpful in deciding where to stay in Stockholm and that you’re now ready to book your hotel in the Swedish capital.

If you have any questions about your trip to Stockholm, please feel free to leave a comment below.

Frequently asked questions:

What’s the best area to stay in Stockholm for tourists?

The best area to stay in Stockholm for tourists is usually Gamla Stan (the old town) or Norrmalm, as they are centrally located and close to many of the city’s most popular attractions. However, there are also other suitable areas in Stockholm, which I cover in this guide.

When is the best time to visit Stockholm?

The best time to visit Stockholm is during the late spring and summer months (May to August) when the weather is mild and daylight hours are longer. However, these months also tend to be the busiest and most expensive. If you don’t mind cooler weather, visiting during the shoulder seasons (April-May and September-October) can be a good option for fewer crowds and lower prices.

How much do hotels in Stockholm cost?

The prices for hotels in Stockholm vary depending on the season and location. Prices can range from around 80 euros to over 300 euros per night. Generally, hotels in the city centre and in the most popular areas are more expensive than hotels in the areas further out. In this guide, I recommend, among others, a really good hotel in southern Södermalm, which would be twice as expensive if it were located in the centre.

How long should I spend in Stockholm to see most of it?

I recommend spending at least three days in Stockholm to see most of the city’s main sights and experience its culture and atmosphere.

Is Stockholm an expensive city to visit?

Stockholm can be an expensive city to visit, especially regarding dining out and accommodation. However, there are ways to save money, such as staying in budget-friendly hotels or hostels, using public transportation, and visiting free attractions like parks and museums.

What is the best way to get around Stockholm?

Stockholm has an efficient and extensive public transport system, including buses, trams, ferries, and the metro (the Tunnelbana). The city is also walkable and bike-friendly, making exploring different neighbourhoods and attractions on foot or by bike easy.

Arriving at Stockholm Arlanda Airport and need to get to the city centre? There are several excellent options to suit your schedule and budget.

From the fast express train to cheaper buses and convenient pre-booked taxis, this guide will help you choose the best way to reach Stockholm’s central areas.

  • Please note that there are a few different airports around Stockholm; this guide is about Stockholm Arlanda Airport (ARN), the main international airport in Stockholm.
Stockholm

I’m Danish, so I’ve been to the capital of Sweden quite a few times. I’ve taken several different modes of transport, so I’ve got a good understanding of how to get from Stockholm Airport to the city centre.

Let’s start with the fastest way to get from Stockholm Airport to the city centre and then move down the list with cheaper options.

Trains from Arlanda to Stockholm City 🚄

The most popular (and fastest) mode of transport in Stockholm is the express train, but there’s another option if you want to save some cash. Let’s start with the fast train, though.

Arlanda Express – fastest & most expensive option

Arlanda Express train from Stockholm Airport to city centre

If you’re in a hurry to get to Stockholm’s city centre, the Arlanda Express is your best bet.

This high-speed train takes just 18 minutes from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm Central Station, making it the quickest option available.

Arlanda Express train

Stockholm Central Station is the main train station in downtown Stockholm. If you haven’t booked a hotel in town yet, check out my massive guide on the best areas and places to stay in Stockholm.

However, this convenience comes with a hefty price tag. A one-way adult ticket costs SEK 320 (around €27.5 if you’re unfamiliar with the Swedish Crowns).

In my opinion, this is extremely expensive for an 18-minute train ride (if you’re more than 2 people travelling together, I’d recommend getting a pre-booked taxi; more on that later in this guide).

Discounts are available though:

  • seniors (65+) pay SEK 160
  • youth (8-25) pay SEK 160
  • and children under 8 travel free with an adult.

Trains depart every 15 minutes during peak hours, and every 30 minutes early in the morning and late at night, so you won’t have to wait long regardless of your flight time.

For more information and to book tickets, visit the Arlanda Express website or get a full overview of the different train options at Omio.

Way cheaper & a bit slower trains

On my last trip to Arlanda Airport I found this other option that I think not a lot of travellers know about.

Trains from Stockholm Airport to city centre
Screenshot from a search I did from Arlanda to Stockholm Central Station at Omio.com.

You should definitely consider taking the PendeltÄg or MÀlartÄg directly from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm Central Station.

Both of these train services are part of Stockholm’s public transport and offer a comfortable and cost-effective alternative to the Arlanda Express.

  • if you’ve ever been to London, it’s a bit like at Gatwick Airport where you’ve got both the (expensive) Gatwick Express and the cheaper services such as Southern and Thameslink.
Train to Stockholm
There are plenty of different options if you want to take the train into Stockholm.

The PendeltÄg (commuter train) runs regularly from Arlanda to Stockholm Central, with tickets costing around SEK 151. This journey takes about 39 minutes and provides a reliable service throughout the day.

The MÀlartÄg also offers direct connections from Arlanda to Stockholm Central.

This option is a bit more expensive, but also just as fast as the Arlanda Express.

Booking tickets online through platforms like Omio can help you secure the best rates.

Pre-booked taxi (cheaper than the express train)

Another convenient option to get from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm city centre is to pre-book a taxi.

Using a service like Welcome Pickups, you can arrange for a private driver to meet you at the airport and take you directly to your hotel in Gamla Stan or anywhere else in central Stockholm.

Taxi price from Arlanda Airport to the old town in Stockholm
Price for a private taxi from Arlanda to Gamla Stan (the old town) in Stockholm.

This service costs around €79 and typically takes about 40 minutes, depending on traffic.

I’ve used Welcome Pickups a lot in Europe both in Berlin, Budapest and Prague, and it’s great knowing exactly how much you’ll pay upfront.

Plus, having a driver waiting for you at the airport with your name on a sign is a nice touch after a long flight.

Regular taxis in Stockholm can be pricey and unpredictable, so booking ahead saves you from any surprises. It’s a reliable and comfortable way to start your trip.

Don’t take a normal taxi in Stockholm

I’m not sure how it works these days, but one of my friends who used to live in Stockholm always told me never to hail a taxi from the street, as they can literally charge you any amount they want.

Have you seen my guide to the best spa hotels in Stockholm? There are some incredible places!

Airport Buses – the cheapest mode of transport

Taking a bus is an excellent option for those looking for a cost-effective way to get from Arlanda Airport to Stockholm city centre.

Flixbus offers frequent services and is considerably cheaper than other bus operators like Flygbussarna.

In this article, I present the 15 best spa hotels in Stockholm. Whether you’re into modern minimalism or traditional Swedish wellness, there’s something for every taste.

The Swedish capital is a fascinating city, and there are surprisingly many excellent spa hotels in Stockholm.

In this guide, I talk about hotels in the centre of Stockholm and places that are a bit outside the city. So, you can find the right hotel here to combine a spa stay with a city break or Swedish tranquillity in nature.

Common to all the hotels in my guide is that they have a pool.

  • Several booking sites also mention hotels that only have treatment rooms or a sauna as “spa hotels“, but I don’t think that counts – so here, you will only find spa hotels with swimming pools.
