Chiang Mai is Thailand’s laid-back northern city – a place with over 300 temples, incredible street food, and a vibe that feels like a blend of cultural depth and modern cafe culture.

Chiang Mai sits surrounded by mountains in northern Thailand, and the city is surprisingly compact. But where you stay makes a huge difference to your experience. The different neighbourhoods have vastly different personalities.

Let’s get into it: where to stay in Chiang Mai?

Best Areas to Stay in Chiang Mai

Here’s a quick overview of the best areas to stay in Chiang Mai:

 • Old Town – Temples, culture, and walkable historic charm ⭐
 • Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) – Trendy cafes, nightlife, and digital nomad hub 🍹
 • Riverside – Peaceful, romantic, and luxurious by the Mae Ping River 💎
 • Santitham – Local, affordable, and perfect for longer stays 🏛

1. Old Town – Best Area for First-Time Visitors ⭐

📍 Distance to city centre: You ARE the city centre
🚇 Transport: Songthaew (red minibus) everywhere for 30-40 THB
✈ Time to airport: 15-20 minutes
💰 Price level: €€ (2/5)
👮 Safety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Old Town is the obvious choice if it’s your first time in Chiang Mai. The area is surrounded by an ancient moat and old city walls dating back to the 13th century, and behind those walls lies a network of quiet streets, hundreds of temples, and countless small cafes and restaurants. Everything can be done on foot or by bicycle – the area is only about 1.5 x 1.5 kilometres.

On Sundays, Ratchadamnoen Road transforms into the Sunday Walking Street, a massive street market with street food, crafts, and live music. It’s one of the best experiences in all of Chiang Mai.

See the best hotels in Old Town here.

Chiang Mai Old Town

The most important temples are located here – Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Chiang Man – and you can visit all of them on a single walk. Tha Phae Gate at the eastern end is the city’s unofficial meeting point, and from there it’s a short distance to the Night Bazaar area.

Prices for hotels and food are surprisingly low compared to Bangkok or the Thai islands. The area is safe and friendly, and it’s easy to arrange trips to Doi Suthep Temple from here.

The only downside? There isn’t much nightlife in the evenings – that happens in the Nimman neighbourhood.

Places to Stay in Old Town

Rachamankha Hotel Chiang Mai, luxury hotel in the old town

Rachamankha Hotel ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

A beautiful boutique hotel built in traditional Lanna style with teakwood, open courtyards, and an atmosphere that feels like a peaceful monastery – just with a pool and air conditioning. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk from Wat Phra Singh and Sunday Walking Street. Rooms feature high ceilings, dark woodwork, and handmade details. The restaurant serves excellent northern Thai food.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “An absolute gem of luxury – the hotel displays a wonderful Thai architecture with patios, gardens and pool.”

Tamarind Village ⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of Chiang Mai’s most beloved hotels, built around an enormous tamarind tree that’s over 200 years old. The atmosphere is calm and beautiful – almost like an oasis in the middle of the city. The pool is surrounded by tropical plants, the breakfast is fantastic, and the staff organise daily activities like bamboo weaving and umbrella painting. Sunday Walking Street literally takes place right outside the hotel’s door. Score on Booking.com: 9.0.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “A paradise in the middle of the old city. The architecture, the calmness, the restaurant and its fantastic and attentive staff.”

POR Thapae Gate ⭐⭐⭐

If you want to stay centrally in Old Town without spending a fortune, POR Thapae Gate is a really solid pick. The hotel has a nice outdoor pool, free bicycles for guests, air conditioning, and free WiFi. The location is hard to beat – you’re literally at Tha Phae Gate, just minutes from the temples and markets. The breakfast with fresh fruit and coffee is a lovely bonus at this price.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “The friendly staff and great location. The fresh fruits, coffee and unlimited supply of water was a blessing.”

2. Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) – Best Area for Nightlife and Cafes 🍹

📍 Distance to city centre: 2 km west of Old Town
🚇 Transport: Songthaew or Grab, 10 min to Old Town
✈ Time to airport: 15 minutes
💰 Price level: €€€ (3/5)
👮 Safety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

Nimman is Chiang Mai’s hip neighbourhood – think Shoreditch in London, but with cheaper coffee and better weather. The area stretches along Nimmanhaemin Road and the side streets (sois), and it’s bursting with trendy cafes, cocktail bars, boutique shops, and international restaurants.

Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center is located here, and One Nimman is a cosy outdoor shopping complex in a European style. The proximity to Chiang Mai University gives the area a young and energetic vibe, especially in the evenings.

See the best hotels in Nimman here.

Nimmanhaemin Road Chiang Mai

It’s the preferred neighbourhood for digital nomads and expats. Here you’ll find coworking spaces, western comfort food alongside fantastic Thai food, and a nightlife scene ranging from rooftop bars to nightclubs. Warmup Cafe is legendary for live music, and Rise Rooftop Bar at Akyra Manor has one of the city’s best views.

The downside is that you’ll need transport to get to Old Town and the temples – but a Grab taxi takes only 10 minutes and costs next to nothing. If you’re planning a longer stay or you’re under 40 and want to have fun in the evenings, Nimman is your neighbourhood.

Places to Stay in Nimman

AMANOR Hotel

Akyra Manor Chiang Mai ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Chiang Mai’s most stylish boutique hotel. Akyra Manor is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and sits on Nimman Soi 9, also known as “coffee street”. All 30 suites are enormous (60-100 m²) with designer furniture, private jacuzzi, and espresso machine. Rise Rooftop Bar on the 8th floor has 360-degree panoramic views over the city and mountains. The Italian restaurant Italics is one of Chiang Mai’s finest.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “The rooftop pool and bar makes an excellent place for happy hour cocktails as you watch the sunset.”

Art Mai Gallery Nimman Hotel ⭐⭐⭐⭐

An art hotel in the heart of Nimman, where each floor is decorated by a renowned Thai artist. This gives the hotel a unique personality that the big chain hotels can never match. An outdoor pool, fitness centre, and a nice restaurant are included. The location is perfect – walk out the door, and you’re right in the middle of Nimman’s cafe and bar scene. Rooms are modern and comfortable, and the staff are helpful with tour bookings. Score: 9.4 for couples on Booking.com.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Great hotel, beautifully designed. Great breakfast and very nice and helpful staff.”

The Craft Nimman ⭐⭐⭐

A solid budget option in Nimman with air conditioning, flat-screen TV, and a clean, modern style. The hotel is close to Maya Mall and the buzzing Nimman Road, so you have cafes and restaurants just around the corner. It’s popular among digital nomads and younger travellers who want the Nimman experience without paying luxury prices. Simple, clean, and central – what more do you need?

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Every room at this hotel is air conditioned and comes with a flat-screen TV. Great value for money.”

3. Riverside – Best Area for Luxury and Couples 💎

📍 Distance to city centre: 1-2 km east of Old Town
🚇 Transport: Grab/Bolt, 5-10 min to Old Town
✈ Time to airport: 10-15 minutes
💰 Price level: €€€€ (4/5)
👮 Safety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5)

The Riverside area along the Mae Ping River is Chiang Mai’s most peaceful and romantic neighbourhood. Here you’ll find some of the city’s finest hotels and resorts, many with direct river views and private gardens. The atmosphere is relaxed and sophisticated – a welcome break from the bustle of Old Town and Nimman.

In the evenings, the riverbank lights up with cosy restaurants and cocktail bars, and a sunset river cruise is one of the most beautiful experiences in the city.

See the best hotels at Riverside here.

Riverside area Chiang Mai

The area is ideal for couples on a romantic holiday, older travellers who prefer peace and quiet, and anyone who wants a luxurious base. You’re still close to everything – Night Bazaar is within walking distance, and Old Town is 5-10 minutes away by Grab.

Warorot Market, Chiang Mai’s local market (far more authentic than Night Bazaar), is also in this area. The downside is that you’re dependent on transport to get around, and prices are generally higher than elsewhere in the city. In return, you get a quality that’s hard to match.

Places to Stay at Riverside

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort pool

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Chiang Mai’s most famous luxury resort, built on the grounds of the former British consulate directly on the Mae Ping River. Designed by the legendary architect Kerry Hill. Rooms are minimalist yet luxurious with private terraces and views over the river or garden. Breakfast at Bodhi Terrace overlooking the river is magical. The spa has ten treatment rooms, and cooking classes with the hotel’s chefs are a popular experience. Score on Booking.com: 9.0.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “It felt like a 5-star resort from the moment you enter. Room with all possible amenities, location, service, breakfast – all was perfect.”

137 Pillars House ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

One of Southeast Asia’s most special boutique hotels. 137 Pillars House is built around a teakwood building from 1889 that once served as the headquarters for the East Borneo Trading Company. Only 30 suites, each with personal butler service, Victorian bathtub, and private terraces. Everything is thought through down to the smallest detail. The hotel is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and the atmosphere feels like staying in a wealthy plantation owner’s residence from the colonial era – but with all modern comforts.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “One of my favorite hotels I have ever stayed in. The team was absolutely incredible.”

Ping Nakara Boutique Hotel & Spa ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A charming boutique hotel in colonial style with white facades, wrought-iron balconies, and a beautiful pool surrounded by tropical plants. Ping Nakara is located close to the river and Warorot Market, combining Old World charm with modern comfort. Breakfast is excellent and served in an elegant dining room. It’s a really good mid-range alternative to the pricier resorts, with plenty of personality and one of the city’s best spa experiences.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Beautiful hotel with colonial charm. Breakfast was superb and the spa treatments were wonderful.”

4. Santitham – Best Area for Local Life and Longer Stays 🏛

📍 Distance to city centre: 1 km north of Old Town
🚇 Transport: Bicycle or Grab, 5-10 min to Old Town
✈ Time to airport: 20 minutes
💰 Price level: € (1/5)
👮 Safety: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4/5)

Santitham is Chiang Mai’s best-kept secret. The neighbourhood sits just north of Old Town and west of Nimman, but it has an entirely different vibe. Local Thai families live here, and the streets are full of street food stalls, local markets, and small cafes that aren’t designed for tourists.

It’s Chiang Mai as it looked before Nimman got hipsterified. Prices are significantly lower than in the other neighbourhoods – both for food and accommodation.

See the best hotels in Santitham here.

Santitham neighbourhood Chiang Mai
There are some fantastic temples in Santitham.

For digital nomads and expats on a tighter budget, Santitham is a brilliant alternative to Nimman. You get a more authentic experience of northern Thai everyday life, and you’re still only 5-10 minutes from everything.

Chang Puak Gate, the entrance to Old Town from the north, is within walking distance, and here you’ll also find the famous Chang Puak Night Market with some of Chiang Mai’s best street food – try the khao kha moo (stewed pork leg) from the famous Michelin-recognised stall.

The downside is a limited selection of hotels compared to the other neighbourhoods, and you’re a bit further away from the main attractions.

Places to Stay in Santitham

Glory Boutique Suites Chiang Mai rooftop pool area

Glory Boutique Suites ⭐⭐⭐⭐

A modern boutique hotel with spacious suites that include kitchen facilities – perfect for longer stays. The location in Santitham gives you local Chiang Mai life right on your doorstep, while you’re still close to everything. The hotel has a clean, modern style and friendly staff who know the neighbourhood and can recommend the best local eateries. Great value for money in a neighbourhood that’s generally cheaper than the rest of the city.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Great location in a quiet area with easy access to the Old Town. Modern rooms and helpful staff.”

See more photos and book here

Isty Hotel ⭐⭐⭐

A trendy, newer hotel in Santitham with a stylish design drawing on northern Thai aesthetics. Rooms are compact but well thought out, with good beds and fast WiFi – important for digital nomads. There’s a cosy communal lounge, and the hotel is close to local cafes and food stalls. It’s the perfect base for those who want to experience the local Chiang Mai without tourism’s polished surface.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Stylish and modern hotel in a great local neighborhood. Perfect for exploring the real Chiang Mai.”

BOOK Design Hotel ⭐⭐⭐

A charming design hotel with a beautiful outdoor pool surrounded by green plants and a relaxed bar and restaurant area. BOOK Design Hotel has a unique personality – it feels more like a private villa than a hotel. The location in Santitham is perfect for those who want peace and local life without being in the middle of the tourist chaos. Free bicycles make it easy to reach Old Town in 5-10 minutes.

Previous guests particularly highlight: “Well located within the Santitham neighbourhood, this chic hotel sits on a unique property with a gorgeous outdoor pool.”

Where Not to Stay in Chiang Mai? ❗

Chiang Mai city overview

Chiang Mai is generally a safe and friendly city, but there are a couple of things you should know. Avoid staying too far out of the centre – areas like Chang Phueak (north) or Hang Dong (south) may look cheap, but you’ll end up spending money and time on transport that eats into your savings.

The area along the busy superhighway (ring road) isn’t particularly pleasant to stay near either – there’s noise, traffic, and nothing walkable. If you spot a hotel at a suspiciously low price far from the moat, think twice.

You’ll have a much better experience staying in one of the four areas above, even if it means a slightly pricier room. Chiang Mai is still cheap compared to most of Europe, so don’t scrimp on the wrong things.

 • Remember that Chiang Mai is a compact city. No matter where you stay, you’re never more than 15-20 minutes from everything by Grab or songthaew. So pick the area that suits your style, and enjoy Thailand’s most beautiful city.
 • The best time to visit is November to February, when the weather is cool and dry. Avoid March-April, when smoke from regional burning can make the air quality poor.

And no matter when you travel – remember to book your hotels well in advance, especially during peak season and around the Loy Krathong festival in November.

In this guide, I’ll go through the best areas and towns, making choosing where to stay in Phuket easier.

Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and has been the most touristy area of Thailand for decades.

Therefore, you can find it all in Phuket.

Whether you want to stay in luxurious hotels by the beach, you’re travelling with children and want to stay in a family-friendly hotel, or you’re a young backpacker looking for like-minded travellers.

travel blogger in Thailand
Me writing a guide to Phuket while looking out over the sea in Thailand at the incredible Santhiya Resort – it doesn’t get any better 😎

Below, I’ll review the best areas in Phuket and recommend hotels in different price ranges. I’ve also included a little island near Phuket – mainly because one of my favourite hotels in Thailand is on that island.

Best places to stay in Phuket

Here’s a brief rundown for those who want a quick overview and then get on with finding the best places to stay in Phuket.

Where to stay in Phuket for different travellers:

 • Patong – best area for nightlife 🥳
 • Karon – best place for families with children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
 • Kata – best quiet place with good beaches 😌
 • Koh Yao Yai – incredible island 20 minutes from Phuket 🏖
 • Phuket Town – stay in an exciting city
 • Kamala – great place with luxury hotels near Surin Beach 🏖
 • Nai Harn – a hidden gem in Phuket away from mass tourism ⭐
 • Rawai – best place for local charm & boat trips 🚤
 • Bangtao – excellent beach near the airport ✈

Click on the area name above and go directly to an overview of the best hotels in the given area.

Below, I’ll go into more depth about where to stay in Phuket.

1. Patong – best area for nightlife 🥳

Patong is one of the most popular towns in Phuket and one of the liveliest areas on the entire island.

Patong, best place to stay in Phuket for nightlife

The famous Patong Beach is the main attraction, with white sand, turquoise blue water, and abundant water sports activities.

In addition, Patong is known for its bustling nightlife, with bars, clubs, and entertainment featuring live music.

In this town, you’ll find Bangla Road, a peculiar mix of regular bars with loud music and red-light district-like bars.

Bangla Road in Patong

Patong can be a great starting point for those travelling to Phuket who want to stay in a classic tourist area with plenty to do and everything from McDonald’s to Irish pubs.

See the best hotels in Patong here.

Before my most recent trip to Thailand, I had been to the country several times but never to Phuket, and I must admit that I looked down on places like Patong as an area.

Patong Beach

I thought this was not the real Thailand, and I might as well experience such tourist towns in Mallorca, Crete, and similar destinations in Europe.

And in a way, it’s true. Patong is a highly touristy destination, for better or worse.

For example, see how Bangla Road looks in the evening in this video:

I wanted to experience that side of Thailand, so we booked a stay in Patong when we arrived from Denmark.

It was a decent way to “land” after the journey: there are plenty of restaurants, shops, and things to do all over Patong – and the beach may not be Thailand’s most beautiful, but it’s still quite decent.

Patong restaurant

Once you get away from Bangla Road, there are plenty of cosy side streets with good restaurants and bars, so although Bangla Road is undoubtedly the town’s main attraction, you don’t have to spend all your time there.

I recommend staying in Patong if you want to be close to everything, and if you want to experience the nightlife in Phuket, then Patong is definitely the best area.

Recommended place to stay in Patong near the Beach (I stayed here)

Nap Patong, good hotel near the beach and city centre

We stayed at NAP Patong, just a few minutes’ walk from the beach, it has a nice pool area and offers neat rooms at affordable prices.

Quite neat rooms with a small terrace – there are also more luxurious rooms at the hotel, but we prioritised staying on a budget here.

Nap Patong hotel room I stayed in on my Thailand trip

A lovely 4-star hotel that can be recommended if you want to stay in pleasant surroundings without breaking the bank. You can walk to the centre of Patong (and Bangla Road) in 10-15 minutes.

See more photos and book online here.

As I mentioned, we stayed at this hotel in Patong because we wanted to stay in a “nice enough place” but not spend too much money on our first hotel in Thailand.

Hotel Indigo Patong Beach

If I wanted to stay more luxuriously in Patong, I would look closer at hotels like Amari Phuket or Hotel Indigo Phuket Patong, which look fantastic.

If you’re travelling to Thailand with children, looking for a more authentic Thailand, or want to stay in beautiful surroundings in peace and quiet, there are many better areas in Phuket.

For example, we’ll take a closer look at Karon now.

2. Karon – best area for families with children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

Just south of Patong, in the next bay on Phuket’s west coast, we find Karon Beach, the perfect area for families with children to stay in Phuket.

Karon Beach, best place to stay in Phuket for families

Karon Beach is a beautiful sandy beach that is less crowded than Patong but still lively enough to attract tourists.

The beach is about 3 km long and is known for its clear water and fantastic sea views. There are plenty of opportunities for snorkelling, swimming, and other water sports activities here.

Karon Beach is a fantastic place to stay in Phuket for families with children.

Children and adults can enjoy many activities, such as boat trips, diving centres, and several child-friendly attractions like Dino Park Mini Golf, a dinosaur-themed amusement park.

See the best hotels in Karon here.

Get an impression of Karon Beach here:

Furthermore, many hotels and resorts in Karon Beach are particularly child-friendly, with facilities such as children’s pools and play areas.

So if you’re looking for a place to stay in Phuket where you and your children will have fun and enjoy a cosy atmosphere, Karon Beach is a great choice.

Places to stay in Karon

Karon has a range of great hotels, with everything from budget hotels offering basic rooms to gigantic luxury resorts with multiple swimming pools.

Karon Hotel

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel with great reviews, I would look closer at Mandarava Resort and Spa Karon Beach.

If you are a family with children looking for a good base in Karon, Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket is particularly well-suited for families.

Centara Grand Beach Resort Phuket, family-friendly hotel in Karon

As the image above shows, you can travel from the beach to the pool in just a few seconds, ensuring everyone in the family is happy 😀

See more hotels in Karon here.

3. Kata – best area for a quiet holiday 😌

Kata Beach is a beautiful sandy beach in Phuket, known for its clear, turquoise-blue water and white sand.

Kata, best place to stay in Phuket for a quiet holiday

The beach’s tranquillity and relatively calm surroundings make it a popular spot for travellers seeking a more relaxing and peaceful holiday.

Kata Beach is known as one of the best beaches in Phuket.

If you want to stay somewhere less crowded than Karon and Patong’s tourist areas, Kata Beach is a great choice.

See the best hotels in Kata here.

The area is known for having a slightly more peaceful and quiet atmosphere, and there are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy Phuket.

You are still relatively close to Karon and Patong, so if you want to visit Patong, it’s just a little over 10 km away, which takes 20-30 minutes by taxi.

If you’re looking for a peaceful and relaxed place to stay in Phuket, Kata Beach is an excellent choice.

Please note that there are both Kata Beach and Kata Noi Beach – Kata Noi is the most beautiful but also the area with the least nightlife (which is excellent if you’re looking for a relaxing place to stay in Phuket).

Places to stay in Kata

kata beach hotel

Regarding the best hotels in Kata, there is one place, in particular, you should start your search: Katathani Phuket Beach Resort is undoubtedly one of the best hotels in Kata and perhaps even Phuket.

A slightly more budget-friendly option that is also very suitable for families is Chanalai Flora Resort, where you can find family rooms with space for 2 adults and 2 children.

See more hotels in Kata here.

4. Koh Yao Yai – incredible island near Phuket 🏝

Initially, I planned to focus solely on cities and holiday areas in Phuket in this guide, but I must mention Koh Yao Yai.

Koh Yao Yai, amazing island near Phuket
Welcome to Koh Yao Yai

The island is accessible via a short boat ride from Phuket and represents a more untouched side of Thailand than the “mainland.”

I had dreamt for years about visiting the island (and one particular hotel, which I’ll discuss below), so I was pretty excited when I got on the speedboat and, in just 20 minutes, arrived from Phuket’s eastern part to Koh Yao Yai in Phang Nga Bay.

The island did not disappoint!

See the best hotels on Koh Yao Yai here.

Koh Yao Yai Beach

Accommodation ranges from simple budget huts to luxury resorts that offer a unique blend of comfort and traditional Thai charm.

What stands out most about Koh Yao Yai is its authenticity. As tourism less affects the island, you can get a more authentic taste of Thai culture and lifestyle.

Remote beach Koh Yao Yai
Not the best beach on Koh Yao Yai, but I just wanted to show you guys how remote it can be!

The island’s beaches are less crowded and offer a fantastic opportunity to relax and enjoy the sea breeze. There are also a variety of local restaurants where you can sample authentic Thai cuisine.

One of the best ways to explore the island is to rent a scooter.

Kristoffer Fons travel blogger at Destination Well Known in Thailand Koh Yao Yai
It’s simply impossible to look cool with that helmet… 😀

It allows you to explore the island’s hidden treasures, from its lush forests and waterfalls to the tranquil mangrove forests.

The weather is tropical year-round, but you should visit from November to April for the best climate.

Places to stay on Koh Yao Yai

One of the reasons we even ended up visiting Koh Yao Yai was our hotel.

For several years, I had dreamt about staying at a hotel I had seen in various travel videos on YouTube – and it did not disappoint!

We’re talking about the 5-star hotel Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort & Spa.

Santhiya, best place to stay on Koh Yao Yai near Phuket

It’s one of the best hotels I’ve ever stayed at. I highly recommend it to anyone travelling to Thailand who wishes to experience luxurious surroundings.

By the way, I met several Danes (I’m from Denmark myself) at the hotel – including one of the country’s most famous comedians and a very well-known former Danish national football player 😀

Beach at Santhiya Koh Yao Yai
The beach bar & restaurant

Santhiya is a vast resort featuring a small private beach, several restaurants, a wide range of room types, bungalows, and complete apartments. Several room types come with a swimming pool with a sea view.

Room at Santhiya Koh Yao Yai

I “settled” for booking a luxurious room with a large bathtub on the balcony with a sea view, and it was indeed an outstanding experience.

Sitting out there in the evening watching the sunset was truly priceless.

Update spring 2024:

I went back to Santhiya! And this time I stayed in one of the ocean view pool villas – here’s my full review:

A beer by the beach in Thailand

The hotel also has two swimming pools—one large one by the beach and an infinity pool on the hilltop, with a restaurant.

Santhiya Resort, infinity pool

The resort’s own shuttle vans drive you around, so even if, for example, you’re staying up by the infinity pool, it only takes a couple of minutes to get down to the beach.

Shuttle bus service at Santhiya

You can book a speedboat transfer to the hotel’s ferry terminal, so you can arrive directly from Phuket to the hotel’s reception in just 20 minutes.

Overall, the stay was exceptional, and I highly recommend it.

Room at Santhiya Resort in Koh Yao Yai

There is a tiny town about a 5-minute walk down the beach, with a few restaurants and small shops, but primarily, you stay at Santhiya to enjoy the hotel.

We rented a scooter and explored the island, which I strongly recommend, as you don’t have to go more than a few hundred meters from the “town” to see a completely different side of Thailand.

See more photos of the hotel and book here.

Let me highlight a couple of other good hotels on Koh Yao Yai that might be what you’re looking for if you’re considering a trip to this fabulous holiday island.

Elixir Koh Yao Yai looks awesome.

Excellent hotel by the beach in Koh Yao Yai

It’s in a fantastic location on the same part of the island (close to Phuket), making it easy to get to and from.

One of the hotel’s big pluses is the variation in room types – you can even get a suite with your own pool!

private pool hotel room at elixir koh yao yai

This allows you to tailor your experience to your budget and desires.

With direct beach access and high review scores, Elixir Koh Yao Yai is worth checking out if you plan a trip to the area.

See more photos and book here.

The following hotel is Koh Yao Yai Village. This place offers a unique experience with its location on the island’s east coast, right by the beach.

Koh Yao Yai Village

One of the hotel’s most striking features is the breathtaking view of the sea cliffs, making the stay here truly special.

The hotel has received high review scores and is known for offering a peaceful and idyllic atmosphere.

Koh Yao Yai Village swimming pool

If you book a stay here, you can expect a relaxing experience surrounded by natural beauty.

And now, back to Phuket itself!

5. Phuket Town – best actual city in Phuket

Phuket Town is the largest city in Phuket and the capital of Phuket Province. The city is known for its history, architecture, and culture.

Although there isn’t direct access to fantastic beaches in Phuket Town, there’s still plenty to experience and explore. Hence, it deserves a spot in this guide.

Phuket Old Town, stay in an actual city in Phuket

Phuket Town differs from all the other areas and cities mentioned in this guide.

However, it’s worth noting, as there is plenty to see, and if you have time to stay in multiple places in Phuket, you might consider spending a few days in Phuket Town.

One of the most notable features of Phuket Town is its beautiful mix of Chinese and Portuguese architecture.

See the best hotels in Phuket Town here.

Everywhere, especially in Phuket Old Town, you can see many restored buildings from the colonial era, now housing galleries, cafes, shops, and numerous temples and palaces.

Phuket Old Town Festival

Phuket Town is also known for its annual festival, “Phuket Old Town Festival,” held annually in February.

You can experience authentic Thai culture here, listen to traditional music, and watch colourful parades and performances.

I experienced this myself when I was in Phuket recently, and it was a genuinely lovely experience.

Perhaps not the most apparent area on Phuket, but consider spending a few nights here and experiencing a different side of the island. Or make sure to fit in a visit to the town in your Phuket itinerary.

Places to stay in Phuket Town

Let’s take a look at some of the best hotels in and around Phuket Town.

I think Sinae Phuket is an excellent choice if you’re looking for privacy and luxury near Phuket Town.

Sinae Phuket private pool villa

The villas feel like your own private retreat, with their own pools and beautiful sea views. Guests often mention how attentive the staff are and how much they enjoy the breakfast options.

If you like relaxing in style, the hilltop spa treatments are worth checking out.

Just a heads-up if you’re considering staying here – you’ll need transport to get around outside the resort; you can’t just walk over to Phuket Town.

It’s ideal for a peaceful getaway.

If you want to experience the charm of Phuket’s Old Town, I think Ratri Hotel is a brilliant option.

Ratri Hotel Phuket Old Town

Right in the centre, it’s perfect for exploring the local shops, cafés, and colourful streets.

The rooms are stylish and comfortable, with a welcoming pool to cool off after a day out.

Guests often highlight the friendly staff and how easy it is to walk to everything.

Just be aware that staying in the heart of the action can mean a bit of city noise at times.

If you’re after a modern and stylish stay in Phuket, I think HOMA Phuket Town should be on your radar.

6. Kamala – stay close to Surin Beach (best beach in Phuket?)

Kamala is a famous town and resort area on the west coast of Phuket, known for its beautiful long sandy beach and clear blue sea.

The town offers a relaxed and peaceful atmosphere, attracting families and couples.

Kamala Phuket
Kamala Beach

Kamala Beach is wide and long, and you can easily find a place to settle down, even during the high season.

See the best hotels in Kamala here.

Kamala Beach is beautiful, but one of the advantages of staying in Kamala is its convenient location close to Surin Beach, which is 2-3 km away.

See Surin Beach on Google Maps here. For more beach recommendations in Phuket, I recommend this 7 day Phuket itinerary.

Surin Beach is one of Phuket’s most beautiful beaches, with crystal clear water and plenty of water sports and snorkelling opportunities.

By staying in Kamala, you are near a beautiful beach and have many shops and restaurants nearby.

At the same time, you can quickly get to Surin Beach, which is one of the best in Phuket.

Kamala has a good mix of luxury resorts, boutique hotels, and budget-friendly accommodation options, so there is something to suit every style and budget.

Places to stay in Kamala

If you want to stay at one of the better hotels in Kamala but don’t need absolute luxury, Novotel Phuket Kamala is a good choice.

Novotel Kamala Beach

As the photo above shows, the hotel is located in the ‘last’ part of Kamala Beach, so you’ll stay right next to the beach in the most undisturbed area.

Sunwing Kamala, best hotel for families
Sunwing Kamala Beach has 8 pools – the perfect family hotel in Kamala.

If you are a family travelling to Phuket and want to stay in Kamala, you should look at the popular family hotel Sunwing Kamala Beach.

7. Nai Harn – hidden gem in Phuket ⭐

Nai Harn is a secret and often overlooked area on the southern tip of Phuket.

It is one of the most secluded places on the island, but there are still many things to see and do if you choose to stay here.

Nai Harn, hidden gem in Phuket
Nai Harn beach

Nai Harn is located in the southern part of the island, only 7-8 km from the Kata area mentioned above.

See the best hotels in Nai Harn here.

The beach in Nai Harn consists of white sand and the clearest turquoise blue water.

It is quieter than other famous beaches in Phuket, making it ideal for an authentic and peaceful holiday experience.

Overall, Nai Harn can provide a different holiday experience than what you usually find on the west coast of Phuket – the perfect destination for travellers seeking peaceful village surroundings mixed with good food and shopping opportunities.

A slightly hidden gem in Phuket, with a completely different atmosphere than in the most well-known holiday towns.

Places to stay in Nai Harn

As mentioned, the area is quite non-touristy, but some outstanding hotels in Nai Harn still exist.

Nai Harn Beach Hotel

Undoubtedly, one of the most spectacular places to stay in this area is The Nai Harn, where you have an outstanding beach view from the restaurant and pool area.

If you’re seeking a comfortable stay near Nai Harn Beach, I think The Gallery Hotel Nai Harn is a solid option.

The Gallery Hotel Nai Harn

It’s just a short walk to the beach, making it convenient for daily visits.

The rooms are spacious and modern, with guests often praising the cleanliness and comfort.

The Gallery Hotel Nai Harn room

The hotel features two large pools and a gym, providing ample opportunities to relax or stay active.

Some guests have noted that the area is somewhat quiet, which is great if you’re looking to unwind, but it might mean fewer dining options within immediate walking distance.

See more photos & book here.

8. Rawai – local charm and easy access to nearby islands

Very close to Nai Harn and with a similar atmosphere, we find Rawai Beach.

It is located in the southeastern part of the island.

It is known for its harbour, which allows tourists to explore the islands south of Phuket using speedboats or long-tail boats (perhaps a trip to Phi Phi Islands?).

See the best hotels in Rawai here.

The beach is narrow with chalk-white sand and the crystal-clear Andaman Sea in the background, making it the perfect destination for those looking for a quieter stay.

Rawai is very similar to Nai Harn – both places have a peaceful atmosphere and affordable hotel prices.

However, compared to Nai Harn, Rawai has more facilities; there are many resorts with swimming pools, beachfront restaurants, shops, and markets with freshly cut fruit and local products.

Rawai is also popular with expats, digital nomads, and people volunteering in Phuket.

Places to stay in Rawai

Good hotel in Rawai

Rawai invites you to relax in hotels where you can enjoy a drink by the pool and unwind. A hotel like Navatara Phuket could be an excellent choice.

If you’re considering a stay near Rawai Beach, I think Tea Tree Boutique Resort is worth a look.

Tea Tree Boutique Resort, nice hotel near Rawai Beach

It’s within walking distance of the beach, offering easy access to local seafood restaurants and boat trips to nearby islands.

While the immediate area is quiet, it’s a short drive to more lively spots for entertainment.

9. Bangtao – amazing beach near the airport ✈

Bangtao is one of the most popular beaches in Phuket and one of the best places to stay on the island.

Bangtao, best place to stay near Phuket Airport

Bangtao is located in the northwestern part of Phuket, just a 15-minute drive from the airport.

The beach is over 6 km long and has plenty of white sand and turquoise blue water, making it ideal for those who want to relax by the beach and stroll up and down the beautiful coastline.

See the best hotels in Bangtao here.

An ideal place to stay in Phuket for those who want to be near a very long and beautiful beach while also staying close to Phuket Airport.

It is easy to continue inland if you travel from Phuket to popular destinations such as Khao Lak, Khao Sok, or the Krabi region with its famous Ao Nang and Railay beaches.

Check out my guide on the best areas to stay in Krabi.

Places to stay in Bangtao

Bangtao Beach hotels
Perhaps the best location for a hotel in Phuket

One of the most beautiful hotels in Bangtao is the 5-star SAii Laguna Phuket, right next to the beautiful sandy beach.

You should book there if you want to stay at one of Phuket’s best hotels.

Best Western Bangtao

If you want to stay a bit cheaper, consider a hotel like Best Western Premier Bangtao Beach Resort & Spa, which also has a beautiful swimming pool on the beach.

Frequently asked questions:

What is the most popular area to stay in Phuket?

The most popular place to stay in Phuket is Patong Beach. This lively holiday area is located on the island’s west side and offers a wide range of activities such as shopping, restaurants, beach, nightclubs, and much more.

Patong Beach is an excellent place for sunshine and lively entertainment. It is a place where there is always something going on, so I would not recommend families with children to stay in Patong.

Where to stay in Phuket with children?

If you are travelling to Phuket with children, Kata Beach is a good choice. This popular area is located south of Patong and has a relaxing environment and beautiful natural landscapes.

What is the best beach in Phuket?

It depends on the type of beach you are looking for. However, there is general agreement that Surin Beach, Freedom Beach, Kata Noi, and Bangtao Beach are among Phuket’s best beaches.

What time of year is best in Phuket?

The best time to visit Phuket is between November and April, when the weather is most pleasant. During this time, you will enjoy plenty of sunshine with temperatures around 28-30 degrees Celsius.

The rainy season between May and October will be more prone to thunderstorms, flooding, and a higher humidity level in the air. December, January, and February are perfect for a holiday in Phuket, as this is the time when the temperature is not too extreme.

Is it better to stay in Patong or Karon?

When it comes to choosing between Patong and Karon, it really boils down to what kind of experience you’re after.

If you’re a fan of lively vibes, bustling nightlife, and tons of shopping and dining options, Patong might be the place for you. It’s got a busy atmosphere, with lots to see and do, making it great for party animals and social butterflies. Just be prepared for the crowds, as it’s a popular spot for tourists.

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a more laid-back and relaxed experience, Karon might be a better fit. It’s quieter than Patong, offering a more peaceful and family-friendly atmosphere. The beach is gorgeous, and there are still plenty of restaurants and shops to enjoy, just without the constant buzz of activity you’d find in Patong.

So, in a nutshell, if you want excitement and energy, head to Patong. If you prefer a more chilled-out vibe, Karon’s your best bet.

The post 14 Days Thailand Itinerary – How to Spend 2 Perfect Weeks in Thailand 🇹🇭 appeared first on Destination Well Known.

]]>
As a former travel agency owner, planning the perfect trip is second nature to me.

In this guide, I’ll share what I believe is the best way to experience Thailand if you have 14 days to immerse yourself in this stunning country.

Rather than trying to see everything in two weeks, we’ll focus on exploring some of the most beautiful regions and islands that are easy to reach.

We’ll visit iconic beaches and attractions but also discover serene areas that aren’t as famous online.

And if you want to see what this Thailand itinerary looks like, here’s a video showing it all:

Days 1-3: Bangkok

Our adventure begins in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a city where ancient culture meets modern vibrancy.

Suvarnabhumi Airport is likely your entry point, and missing out on Bangkok during your Thailand trip would be a mistake.

Arrival in Bangkok

Bangkok Airport taxi rank

After clearing customs, you have two main options to reach your hotel: an official airport taxi or the Bangkok Airport Rail Link.

The taxi costs between 400 to 600 Thai Baht, depending on traffic and destination, and ensures a metered fare.

Alternatively, the Airport Rail Link takes 30 minutes to reach Phaya Thai Station for just 45 Baht, offering a scenic view of the city’s outskirts.

Bangkok Airport train

I’ve also written a longer guide on how to get from Bangkok Airport to the City Centre.

Where to stay in Bangkok

Choose a hotel with a rooftop pool. These are plentiful in Bangkok and provide a refreshing escape from the city’s heat.

Eastin Grand Phayathai, luxury hotel in Bangkok

For a luxurious stay, consider the 5-star Eastin Grand Phaya Thai, which became Instagram-famous thanks to its incredible views, rooftop pools, and world-class breakfast buffet.

It also offers convenient access to Phaya Thai station. Whether you choose luxury or a budget-friendly option, having a pool is a game-changer in the tropical heat.

You can also check out my where to stay in Bangkok guide, where I mention other hotels in different areas.

Things to do in Bangkok

Divide your day into two parts to cope with Bangkok’s intense heat. Start early, explore until lunch, and then return to your hotel for a siesta, making good use of the rooftop pool.

Head out again in the cooler late afternoon.

Here are some of my favourite things to do in Bangkok:

Chao Phraya River Cruise

Chao Phraya River Cruise

Gain insight into Bangkok’s diversity by taking a boat cruise. Opt for a commuter boat like the green line from Saphan Taksin to Wat Arun for an authentic experience.

These boats are a window into daily Thai life, offering a unique perspective of the city’s riverside attractions.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn)

Wat Arun

Known as the Temple of Dawn, this iconic riverside temple boasts a central spire over 70 meters tall. Its unique architectural style, adorned with colourful porcelain and seashells, glistens in the sunlight. Arrive early to avoid the heat and crowds.

Admission is 200 Baht.

Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew

No visit to Bangkok is complete without exploring the Grand Palace, the official residence of the Kings of Siam. Within its grounds lies Wat Phra Kaew, home to the revered Emerald Buddha.

The intricate architecture and vibrant decorations are a feast for the eyes.

Chatuchak Weekend Market

If your visit falls over the weekend, this massive market is a must-visit. With over 15,000 stalls, you can find everything from trendy clothes to exotic street food. It’s a shopper’s paradise where haggling is part of the fun.

MBK Center

MBK Center Bangkok

This shopping center features one of Bangkok’s best food courts, offering diverse and affordable dining options. It’s a great spot to try Thai dishes like Pad Thai, Som Tum (papaya salad), and Mango Sticky Rice.

Khao San Road

Khao San Road

This area is famous for its lively nightlife. While not the most authentic Thai experience, it’s perfect for a fun night with street vendors, music bars, and a party atmosphere. It’s also a great place to meet fellow travellers.

My favourite street in the area is actually Soi Rambuttri which is a bit more calm than the actual Khao San Road.

Lumpini Park

Lumpini Park

A must-visit park home to harmless monitor lizards. Enjoy a peaceful stroll or rent a paddleboat on the lake while keeping a respectful distance from these fascinating creatures. It’s a green oasis amid the urban jungle.

Departure to Surat Thani

After three days of exploring Bangkok’s rich culture and modern marvels, take a domestic flight to Surat Thani, your gateway to the natural wonders of Khao Sok National Park.

Days 4-5: Khao Sok National Park

Khao Sok National Park is a paradise of lush jungles, towering limestone cliffs, and diverse wildlife, including elephants and tigers. It’s one of Thailand’s most beautiful and untouched areas.

Getting There

From Surat Thani Airport, arrange a pre-booked taxi to avoid haggling upon arrival. The drive takes about two hours through picturesque landscapes, setting the tone for your wilderness adventure.

Have a look at 12go.Asia to pre-book taxis in Thailand.

Where to stay in Khao Sok

Hotel in Khao Sok

Stay in the cosy village near the park entrance, which offers easy access to jungle treks and a serene atmosphere. The area is dotted with eco-friendly lodges and treehouses, blending seamlessly with the lush surroundings.

Hotels here can arrange excursions for you, ensuring a hassle-free experience.

I stayed at Magical Mountain View Resort on my latest trip to Khao Sok, and I think it was quite nice.

In my where to stay in Thailand guide, I mention a couple of other hotels in the area.

Things to do in Khao Sok National Park

Jungle Trekking

Explore the dense rainforest with guided treks, immersing yourself in nature. These treks vary in length and difficulty, catering to both casual walkers and serious hikers.

Jungle Trek in Khao Sok National Park

You’ll discover exotic flora, hidden waterfalls, and the chance to spot wildlife like hornbills and gibbons.

Lake Tours

Experience the breathtaking beauty of Cheow Lan Lake on a boat tour.

Khao Sok boat tour on the lake

Known for its emerald waters and floating bungalows, a day on the lake offers kayaking, swimming, and exploring the mysterious limestone caves.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Departure to Krabi

After immersing yourself in the natural beauty of Khao Sok, take a shuttle or taxi to Krabi, where beach paradise awaits.

Again, check out 12go.Asia to pre-book a taxi or join a shared minivan down to Krabi.

Days 6-10: Krabi (Ao Nang and Railay)

Next, we head to Krabi, a region famous for its stunning beaches, dramatic limestone cliffs, island tours, vibrant nightlife, and a wide array of dining options.

Where to stay in Ao Nang

Ao Nang

While Ao Nang may not be the most charming destination, it’s an ideal base with easy access to beaches and day trips. Opt for budget-friendly accommodation since you won’t spend much time in your hotel.

I’ve stayed at this Holiday Inn Resort in Ao Nang, and it was excellent. Perfect location near the beach, plenty of restaurants and the main nightlife area of Ao Nang is also nearby.

I’ve also written a longer guide on where to stay in Krabi, in which I mention more hotels in Ao Nang and Railay.

Things to do in Krabi

We’re spending quite some time in the Krabi region, and the reason is simply that there is so much to do. It’s pretty much the perfect place to stay in Thailand if you want to do awesome day trips and experience many different places.

Here are some of the main things to do in Krabi.

Railay Beach

Railay Beach

Take a short boat ride from Ao Nang to Railay Beach, one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches. Railay is surrounded by limestone cliffs and lush jungle, giving it a secluded feel. The beach is a hotspot for rock climbing, offering routes for all skill levels.

Consider crossing to Phra Nang Beach via the monkey trail for a complete experience, where you can explore caves and enjoy the pristine sands.

Early Sunrise Tour to Maya Bay

Visit Maya Beach, made famous by Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Beach.” Opt for an early-bird tour to beat the crowds and enjoy breakfast on a nearby island.

Maya Bay in Thailand

The tour also includes visiting Bamboo Island and the stunning Phi Phi Islands, where you can snorkel in crystal-clear waters.

I recommend this tour from Ao Nang to Maya Bay.

Check out my video from Maya Bay:

Hong Islands

Don’t miss a day trip to the breathtaking Hong Islands, just 30 minutes from Ao Nang by long-tail boat. The islands boast stunning lagoons and secluded beaches, perfect for snorkelling and swimming.

Hong Islands

Explore the main Hong Island and nearby Koh Lao Lading for unforgettable scenery, where you can relax on powdery sands and swim in turquoise waters.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Thung Teao Forest Natural Park

Discover the Emerald Pool, a natural hot spring, and the Blue Pool, a mesmerizing natural attraction in a tropical forest setting. The area is perfect for a relaxing day of nature walks and swimming.

Krabi Night Market

Experience local culture and cuisine at the Krabi Night Market, held every weekend in Krabi Town. It’s a vibrant hub of food stalls, live music, and handicraft vendors.

Departure to Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi

Kristoffer Fons from Destination Well Known in Thailand

After soaking up the sun and exploring the wonders of Krabi, it’s time to unwind on the tranquil islands of Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi.

Days 11-13: Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi

After a busy few days in Ao Nang, it’s time to unwind on the tranquil islands of Koh Yao Yai or Koh Yao Noi, located in Phang Nga Bay, midway between Phuket and Krabi.

Koh Yao Noi

This smaller island offers a peaceful escape with fewer tourists. It retains a traditional Thai charm, with rice paddies, rubber plantations, and fishing villages dotting the landscape.

Koh Yao Noi

Here’s my video from Koh Yao Noi & the Hong Islands:

Relax on the beach, rent a scooter to explore, or stay at a cozy resort. Other activities include kayaking in the mangroves, taking a yoga class, or visiting the island’s art community.

Have a look at the best hotels in Koh Yao Noi here.

Koh Yao Yai

Slightly more developed, Koh Yao Yai is perfect for those seeking luxury. The Santhiya Koh Yao Yai resort offers ocean-view pool villas, stunning views, and top-notch amenities.

Santhiya pool villa

SanthiSpend your days relaxing or exploring the island by scooter.

Here’s my video from Santhiya:

Visit the local markets, try fresh seafood at beachfront restaurants, or take a boat trip to nearby uninhabited islands for snorkelling and sunbathing.

Days 13-14: Phuket

Conclude your journey with a short speedboat ride from Santhiya to Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, known for its lively towns, vibrant nightlife, and stunning beaches.

The main tourist area in Phuket is Patong, where I can recommend staying at Nap Patong.

Patong beach in Phuket

I’ve also written a longer guide on where to stay in Phuket, so check it out to see what areas appeal to you.

Things to do in Phuket

In this 2 weeks in Thailand itinerary we’re only spending one night in Phuket, but here are a few cool things to do if you’re there for a longer period.

Patong Beach

Patong walking street

Known for its nightlife, Patong is the perfect spot to end your trip with a bang. Enjoy the bar scene, live music, and entertainment along Bangla Road.

Old Phuket Town

Old Phuket Town

Explore the historical heart of Phuket, where Sino-Portuguese architecture lines the streets. Visit charming cafés, boutique shops, and the vibrant Sunday Walking Street Market.

Big Buddha

Visit the iconic Big Buddha statue, perched atop Nakkerd Hill, offering panoramic views of the island.

Departure 😥

After soaking in the last of Thailand’s beauty and culture, head to Phuket International Airport to catch your flight home.

Whether flying directly or via Bangkok, you’ll leave with unforgettable memories of Thailand’s diverse landscapes and warm hospitality.

]]>
I’ve travelled extensively in Thailand and, in recent years, have taken a tour once a year. But before my first trip to Thailand, I was as confused as you might be: where should I go in Thailand?

It’s such a vast country.

So, if you’re planning a trip to Thailand but are unsure where to stay, you’ve come to the right place.

Kristoffer Fons from Destination Well Known, in Thailand

Whether you’re into cultural experiences, family-friendly destinations, or hidden gems, you’ll find inspiration here to choose the perfect place for your next holiday in Thailand.

Let’s get started with the guide: where to stay in Thailand?

1. Koh Yao Yai & Noi

Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi are two of the most underrated destinations in Thailand, in my opinion.

These islands, located between Phuket and Krabi, are ideal for those wanting to escape the large tourist crowds and experience a more authentic Thai island life.

You can expect beautiful, pristine beaches and a tranquil atmosphere on Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi. The islands are perfect for nature lovers and those seeking peace and quiet.

Hong Island near Koh Yao Noi
I went on a day trip from Koh Yao Noi to Hong Island and it’s probably the best day out I’ve had in Thailand.

Here, you can enjoy kayaking, snorkelling, and hiking through lush landscapes. The beaches are not crowded, and you’ll often have them almost to yourself.

Travellers to these islands are often couples, families, or solo travellers who appreciate scenic surroundings and a relaxed vibe. There are good options for staying in small, cosy resorts and bungalows on the beach, providing an intimate and authentic experience.

Koh Yao Yai and Koh Yao Noi are perfect for a holiday where you can unwind and enjoy Thailand’s natural beauty without the large tourist crowds.

Where to stay in Koh Yao Yai & Yao Noi

santhiya yao yai, best place to stay in koh yao yai

On Koh Yao Yai, there’s no doubt – I recommend staying at Santhiya Koh Yao Yai.

I’ve been there twice and think it’s absolutely phenomenal.

I also made a video about the place where I stayed in a villa with a private pool:

Over on Koh Yao Noi, there are also plenty of good hotels.

I’d recommend looking at a place like Cape Kudu Hotel, which is located by the water and has views of the fantastic cliffs this part of Thailand is known for.

If you stay here, you should also take a day trip to the Hong Islands:

2. Bangkok

Bangkok is a surprisingly exciting city full of contrasts. You’ll find everything from glittering temples and bustling markets to modern shopping centres and vibrant nightlife here.

It would be a shame not to experience Bangkok for just a few days, as the city offers unique experiences you won’t find elsewhere.

Bangkok Thailand
The Wat Arun temple and the Chao Phraya river in Bangkok.

Explore the Grand Palace, take a trip on a traditional longtail boat on the Chao Phraya River, and enjoy authentic Thai food at one of the many street food markets.

Bangkok is hectic, but that’s part of its charm and attraction.

Where to stay in Bangkok?

I’ve written a more extensive guide on where to stay in Bangkok, but a hotel I was super pleased with on my last trip to Thailand is Eastin Grand Phayathai.

The location is fantastic, and I can’t fault the hotel, which has two infinity swimming pools with stunning views over Bangkok.

Check out my Thailand travel itinerary where I’m sharing the best way to travel Thailand if you’ve only got 2 weeks:

3. Koh Samui

Koh Samui is an easy and convenient holiday island, perfect for families and travellers who appreciate familiar comforts.

The island offers beautiful beaches, luxurious resorts, and various activities, from water sports to golf and yoga.

Chaweng in Koh Samui
Chaweng Beach in Koh Samui.

With many restaurants, shops, and entertainment options, Koh Samui is an ideal destination for a relaxed yet entertaining holiday.

Chaweng Beach is known for its lively nightlife, while Lamai Beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere.

Where to stay in Koh Samui?

I’d recommend Fisherman’s Village for families, Chaweng or Lamai for couples or solo travellers, but check out my comprehensive guide on where to stay on Koh Samui for more lesser-known areas on the large island.

Sea Dance Resort in Koh Samui

If I have to point out a hotel on Koh Samui, it’s undoubtedly Sea Dance Resort – it’s probably one of the best places I’ve stayed in Thailand.

It’s not that it’s a five-star luxury hotel, but it just had a perfect vibe.

I stayed in one of the villas with a private pool, which was truly delightful.

4. Krabi

Krabi is a fantastic destination with countless opportunities for adventure and relaxation.

If you stay in Ao Nang, you can easily access excursions to spectacular places like Railay Beach and the Phi Phi Islands.

Kristoffer Fons in Krabi
Krabi is one of my favourite places in Thailand.

Krabi is a whole region, so there are many small, cosy holiday areas besides the well-known spots.

Krabi is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful beaches. It’s a paradise for climbing, snorkelling, and diving.

railay beach in Krabi
Railay Beach is only a 5-10 min boat ride from Ao Nang.

Ao Nang is an excellent base with many restaurants, bars, and easy access to island hopping and nature experiences.

Krabi is probably the most beautiful area in Thailand, and it’s also where you’ll find some of the best beaches, such as the Phi Phi Islands or Railay Beach near Ao Nang.

Where to stay in Krabi?

Good question, as there are so many great areas. I’ve written a large guide where I go through some of the best places and recommend hotels, so take a look at the guide on where to stay in Krabi.

Kristoffer Fons in Ao Nang Beach
Ao Nang beach is also pretty cool.

Most travellers will enjoy staying in Ao Nang and using the town as a base for excursions. It’s not that Ao Nang is a super exciting town, but there are plenty of restaurants and bars, and you get a lot of value for money when it comes to hotels.

So, I’d recommend booking a decent hotel like Panan Krabi Resort and enjoying having a good base while taking day trips to places like Railay, Phi Phi, Hong Island, etc.

Check out my video where I take a day trip from Ao Nang to Maya Bay on Phi Phi:

5. Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta is a lovely, family-friendly island where not much happens, but peace and relaxation are the main focus. The island is known for its long, calm beaches and laid-back atmosphere.

It’s a perfect place for families wanting to spend quality time together without stress.

Koh Lanta

I visited here on my first trip to Thailand when I was in my early 20s, and I think I found it a bit too quiet – now that I’m in my early 30s, Koh Lanta sounds really delightful 😀

Here, you can enjoy snorkelling, diving, and relaxed beach days. Koh Lanta is also home to several cosy restaurants and small shops, giving the island a charming and local feel.

Where to stay in Koh Lanta?

I recommend staying by one of the island’s best beaches, with the best selection of restaurants and a bit of life – Long Beach.

For example, there’s a fantastic hotel like Long Beach Chalet, where you can stay in holiday cottages right on the beach.

6. Koh Kood

Koh Kood is a relatively unspoiled holiday paradise, often called a hidden gem. Although there are other tourists, the island is charming with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters.

Koh Kood is ideal for those seeking peace and tranquillity in beautiful surroundings. Here, you can snorkel, dive, and hike in the lushness of nature.

Koh Kood

The island might be somewhat overshadowed by the nearby Koh Chang (which we’ll get to later in this guide), but I highly recommend not just staying on Koh Chang when you travel to this part of Thailand.

The island has limited resorts, ensuring an exclusive and peaceful experience. There are some truly nice hotels here on Koh Kood.

Where to stay in Koh Kood?

Several have written in their reviews of High Season Pool Villa & Spa that it’s the best hotel they’ve ever stayed in.

I haven’t stayed there myself, but it’s undoubtedly a place I need to visit – it looks really good.

7. Phuket

Phuket is the most touristy area in Thailand, but you can still find really good places, and not all towns in Phuket are as festive as Patong 😀

Phuket International Airport makes getting here easy, too.

Patong Beach in Phuket
Patong Beach – one of the most popular areas in Phuket.

Phuket offers fantastic beaches, luxurious resorts, and many activities and nightlife.

Kata and Karon Beaches are good alternatives with a more relaxed atmosphere.

Nai Harn Beach in Phuket
Nai Harn Beach in the southern part of Phuket.

Phuket is also an excellent base for island hopping to surrounding islands and nature experiences.

Travellers here range from party-loving tourists to families and couples.

Where to stay in Phuket?

I’ve also written a comprehensive guide to the best areas and places to stay in Phuket, so take a look there to better understand where to stay in this part of Thailand.

I stayed in Patong on my last trip to Phuket, which was surprisingly fine, but next time I think I’ll try staying at the beautiful Surin Beach, and I’ve got my eye on the hotel The Surin Phuket.

8. Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second-largest city, located in the north. It has an entirely different vibe than the tourist islands. The city is known for its historic temples, night markets, and cultural experiences.

In recent years, Chiang Mai has become a bit of a hotspot for digital nomads working in the IT industry, so there are also incredibly many cool coffee shops – and you certainly don’t need to have your laptop with you to enjoy them 😀

Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is perfect for those wanting to experience Thailand’s rich culture and traditions.

It’s especially great for day trips, where you can trek in the mountains, visit local villages, and enjoy the fantastic food scene.

The city is also great for wellness and yoga retreats, making it a fascinating destination in Thailand and not ‘just’ a big city.

Where to stay in Chiang Mai?

There are everything from cheap hostels to luxury resorts in Chiang Mai. I’d choose a hotel close to the centre, so it’s easy to get around and experience the city’s many attractions and food markets.

Kiri Hotel Chiang Mai is a good option for a modern hotel with a swimming pool to cool off after sightseeing.

Check out my guide on where to stay in Chiang Mai too.

9. Koh Chang

Koh Chang is one of Thailand’s largest islands and offers a mix of beautiful beaches, lush rainforest, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Koh Chang
Lonely Beach in Koh Chang.

The island is ideal for nature lovers and those wanting to escape the more touristy places. Here, you can go hiking, snorkelling, diving, or enjoy the peace on the many beaches.

White Sand Beach is famous for its beauty and facilities, while Lonely Beach attracts backpackers and those seeking a more bohemian vibe.

Travellers here on Koh Chang range from adventurous backpackers to couples and families.

Where to stay in Koh Chang?

Koh Chang is Thailand’s third-largest island, so it’s a huge area, but there’s also a lot of jungle where there aren’t many hotels.

A really good place to stay on Koh Chang is Klong Prao Beach, the longest sandy beach on the island.

There, I’d look at a place like Koh Chang Paradise Resort & Spa, which is right on the beach and has a swimming pool with sea views.

10. Pai

Pai is known for its beautiful nature and relaxed atmosphere. This small town in northern Thailand is surrounded by mountains, waterfalls, and hot springs.

Pai is perfect for those wanting to relax and enjoy nature.

Pai Thailand

Go on hikes, bike rides, or visit the many local markets. The town has a cosy, bohemian vibe with many cafes, restaurants, and small shops.

Pai is an excellent destination in Thailand if you love nature and want to experience an area of Thailand that’s not on every other tourist’s radar.

Where to stay in Pai?

There are many fabulous hotels in Pai, where they’ve put a lot of effort into the décor in beautiful Thai style.

One of them is Pai Village Boutique Resort, which is close to the main street in Pai but still has a unique and more rural feel.

11. Khao Sok

Khao Sok National Park is one of Thailand’s most fantastic nature experiences. The park is known for its dramatic limestone cliffs, dense rainforest, and large freshwater lakes.

Kristoffer Fons in Khao Sok National Park

I’d had Khao Sok on my radar for several years, but it took a few trips to Thailand before I finally visited Khao Sok – that was a mistake.

I highly recommend everyone visit the national park – even if it seems like a long trip from the more traditional holiday areas.

Jungle trek in Khao Sok

You can drive to Khao Sok from Phuket and Krabi in about three hours, making it easy to combine with other well-known tourist areas.

There are plenty of opportunities to go jungle trekking and take boat trips on the enormous lake, so there’s enough to do in Khao Sok for at least two nights.

You can also stay on the lake in floating bungalows and experience nature’s peace and beauty up close.

Where to stay in Khao Sok?

Typically, you stay in an area of the national park where a small tourist village has been built, and it’s much more charming than it sounds.

It’s a small area with many hostels and hotels, where you live in harmony with nature.

That wasn’t quite for me, so I stayed a bit away from the town at Magical Mountain View Resort, which I highly recommend.

Magical Mountain View Resort in Khao Sok
The cosy little hotel in Khao Sok.

It’s a nice little hotel with a restaurant and pool, but there are no shops or restaurants nearby, so you need to be prepared to take a taxi to get anywhere.

An alternative suggestion, located near the town and restaurants, could be Malulee KhaoSok Resort, which has received really good reviews from previous guests.

12. Khao Lak

Khao Lak is a tranquil holiday area two hours north of Phuket.

It’s a family-friendly destination with beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.

Khao Lak is perfect for those seeking a peaceful holiday away from the more hectic tourist areas.

Khao Lak, family-friendly area in Thailand

Many of my friends and former schoolmates who have had children have enjoyed travelling to Khao Lak with small kids.

You can enjoy snorkelling, diving, and exploring the nearby national parks here.

The area also offers good restaurants and cosy markets, where visitors can experience the local culture. Travellers here are often families and couples seeking relaxation and nature.

Where to stay in Khao Lak?

The entire coast around Khao Lak Village is filled with hotels, many of which are relatively modern (the area was heavily hit by the tsunami in 2004).

I’ve got my eye on La Vela Khao Lak, which is a large hotel with four different pools – so there are places where adults can relax and where kids can play. The hotel is also right on the beach.

Thailand is a country filled with diverse destinations to suit every traveller’s needs and desires.

Thailand Railay Beach
You’ve got something to look forward to…

Whether you’re into city life, cultural experiences, relaxing beach holidays, or adventurous nature experiences, Thailand has something to offer.

I think I’ve been to Thailand six times now, and I’m not done yet 😀

I hope this guide has helped you find the perfect place to stay for your next Thailand holiday.

Planning a trip to Thailand’s stunning island of Phuket or one of the nearby holiday areas?

One of the first things you’ll need to figure out is how to get from Phuket Airport to your hotel.

On my last trip to Thailand a few months ago, I flew into Phuket Airport and, later on the trip, took a domestic flight from Phuket to Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.

Kristoffer Føns, travel blogger in Thailand
Yours truly on his way from Phuket Airport to Koh Yao Yai

In this guide, I’ll break down all your Phuket airport transport options so you can start your vacation smoothly and stress-free.

I will start with my most important tip if you’re arriving at Phuket Airport on an international flight and need to get through immigration.

My Top Tip When Arriving at Phuket Airport ✌

Phuket Airport arrival hall
Once you’ve cleared customs, Phuket Airport is excellent…

If you’re arriving at Phuket Airport on an international flight, brace yourself for the immigration process and get your tourist visa for Thailand.

It’s a notoriously long process – I spent over an hour and a half in line the last time I arrived in Phuket. It’s a pretty miserable way to start your trip, especially after a long flight.

But there’s a way to skip the queue: purchasing Fast Track. You can buy this service at the airport, but it’s crucial to have Thai baht on hand since they only accept cash.

Alternatively, you can book the service from home, which includes a special package with a private transfer to your hotel in Phuket.

Read more and book here.

It’s definitely worth it to either buy Fast Track upon arrival or book the special service in advance to ensure a smooth start to your holiday.

I’ll definitely never fly internationally to Phuket Airport again without booking the fast-track option.

How to get to your hotel in Phuket

Me waiting for a boat in Thailand 😀

Here’s a detailed guide on the best transport options for some of the most popular areas in Phuket: Patong, Phuket Town, and Karon.

If you haven’t booked a hotel in Phuket yet, check out my guide on the best areas and places to stay in Phuket.

Also, I’ve got to be honest here and let you know that a lot of the information I’m getting comes from the awesome website 12Go.Asia.

I’ve been using this platform to book ferries, buses and shuttles in Thailand since 2017 and it just works.

So honestly, if you want to know how much it’d cost or how long it’d take to get from A to B in Thailand, I would head over to 12Go.Asia and do a quick search.

You can see timetables and get tickets for any mode of transport from Phuket Airport on that website as well.

patong-beach
Patong Beach in Phuket

Patong

Taxis

Taxis are the most convenient and quickest way to get from Phuket Airport to Patong. Taxis are available right outside the arrivals hall, and you can negotiate the fare.

Typically, a taxi ride to Patong costs around 500-1500 THB (approximately $14-$28 USD).

This option is perfect if you have a lot of luggage or if you arrive late at night. The ride usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic.

You could also pre-book a taxi from around $19 – then you don’t have to worry about the driver knowing what hotel you’re going to and the price is fixed as you’ve pre-booked it.

You can pre-book your transfer here (this service gets great reviews).

Buses

An airport bus is an excellent option for budget travellers. The fare is around 150-200 THB (about $4.50-$6 USD). These buses run frequently throughout the day from 8:30 AM to 8:45 PM.

Although they are cheaper, the bus journey takes longer, usually around 1.5 to 2 hours, as it makes multiple stops along the way.

You can see timetables and book tickets at 12go.

Vans

Shared vans offer a middle ground between cost and convenience. The fare ranges from 200-300 THB (approximately $6-$9). While they are slightly slower than taxis due to multiple stops, they are a comfortable and affordable option.

Vans run from 6:00 AM to 5:30 PM, with a travel time of around 1.5 to 2 hours.

Phuket Town

Taxis: For a quick and direct trip to Phuket Town, taking a taxi is the best choice. The cost ranges from 650 to 1,000 THB (about $20-$30 USD). The journey typically takes around 30-45 minutes.

You can pre-book a driver online from Phuket Airport to Phuket Town here.

Buses: The airport bus to Phuket Town is very affordable, costing around 100-150 THB (about $3-$5 USD). The buses run from 7:30 AM to 9:30 PM, taking approximately 1 hour.

This is a great option for budget travellers, but it’s less convenient if you have a lot of luggage or arrive late at night.

phuket-old-town
Phuket Town

Vans

Shared vans to Phuket Town are priced around 150-250 THB (about $4.50-$7.50 USD). They offer a good balance between cost and convenience, taking about 1-1.5 hours to reach Phuket Town.

Vans run from 6:00 AM to 7:00 PM, making them a viable option for many travellers.

You can see timetables and book tickets at 12go.

Karon

Taxis: The easiest way to get from Phuket Airport to Karon is by taxi. The fare typically ranges from 800 to 1,200 THB (about $25-$35 USD).

The journey takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. This is the best option if you have a lot of luggage or if you prefer a direct route.

You can pre-book your transfer here.

Buses

While there are no direct buses from Phuket Airport to Karon, you can take a bus to Phuket Town and then transfer to another bus or a tuk-tuk to Karon.

 • It’s not something I’d recommend if you’re travelling to Phuket with children or aren’t used to using transport in Thailand.

This option is the most economical, costing around 150-200 THB (about $4.50-$6 USD) in total, but it’s also the most time-consuming, taking up to 2.5 hours depending on transfer times.

You can see timetables and book tickets at 12go.

Getting to Khao Lak

Travelling from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak involves an approximately 75-kilometre journey, and you have several transport options to consider, each with its own advantages and price points.

Given the distance and the potential for travel fatigue, especially if you’ve had a long flight, I highly recommend pre-booking a taxi.

It ensures a smooth, comfortable, and direct journey to your hotel in Khao Lak without waiting for shared transport or dealing with multiple stops.

Pre-Booked Taxis

For the most convenience, especially given the distance, pre-booking a taxi is highly recommended. The cost for a private taxi from Phuket Airport to Khao Lak ranges from 1,700 to 2,000 THB (about $48-$57 USD).

This option offers a direct and comfortable ride, usually taking around 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on traffic conditions. It’s the best choice if you have a lot of luggage or if you prefer a hassle-free transfer straight to your hotel.

Check out this option that costs only around $38.

Airport Taxis

You can also get a taxi directly at the airport.

While this might save some time regarding pre-arranging, the prices can vary, and it’s often less predictable than a pre-booked service.

Expect to pay around 1,700 to 2,000 THB ($48-$57 USD), similar to pre-booked options.

Vans

Shared vans are a more economical choice, with prices ranging from 600 to 1,000 THB (about $17-$28 USD). They offer a balance between cost and convenience, though they typically take longer due to multiple stops along the way.

The journey can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on the number of passengers and stops. Vans generally operate from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Advantages of Vans:

 • Cost-effective for solo travelers or those on a budget.
 • Regular departures throughout the day.
 • Direct drop-off at your accommodation in Khao Lak.

Express Buses

The most budget-friendly option is the express bus, with fares as low as 260 to 300 THB (around $7-$9 USD). The bus ride takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.

While this is the cheapest option, it’s also the least flexible in terms of schedule and comfort.

Advantages of Buses:

 • Cheapest mode of transport.
 • Regular services from the airport.

Getting to Krabi & Ao Nang

The distance from Phuket Airport to Ao Nang in the Krabi province is about 170 kilometres. Despite it seeming faster to travel by boat, I recommend taking a taxi and driving.

Ao Nang in Krabi
Ao Nang

It’s often hard to predict how quickly ferries or speedboats can get you to your destination, so having a pre-booked taxi and sitting back and relaxing without thinking too much about the journey is simpler.

Check out my guide on where to stay in Krabi if you haven’t booked your hotel yet.

Kristoffer Fons in Ao Nang
Ao Nang Beach is very nice.

Pre-Booked Taxis

The most straightforward and comfortable way to get from Phuket Airport to Krabi or Ao Nang is by pre-booking a taxi.

This option provides a direct route, typically taking around 2 to 3 hours. A private taxi costs range from 2,500 to 3,500 THB (about $72-$100 USD).

Pre-booking ensures that a driver will be waiting for you upon arrival, making the trip hassle-free and efficient.

The cheapest option I can find at 12go.Asia is a 2.5-hour private taxi from Phuket Airport to Ao Nang for 63.

Express Buses

Another budget-friendly option is taking an express bus. The fare is around 300 to 400 THB (about $9-$11 USD).

Buses operate several times a day, but they are the slowest option, taking up to 4 hours to reach Krabi or Ao Nang.

This is an excellent option for backpackers, but for “normal” travellers I’d highly recommend getting a taxi.

Ferries and Speedboats

While it might seem appealing to travel by sea, the schedules and travel times can be unpredictable.

Ferries and speedboats can take anywhere from 2 to 4 hours, depending on sea conditions and the specific service.

Additionally, once you reach the port in Krabi or Ao Nang, you will still need ground transportation, which will add to the overall travel time and complexity.

Getting a ferry or speedboat from Phuket Airport to Krabi is just not worth it, guys.

Getting to Koh Yao Yai

Getting from Phuket Airport to Koh Yao Yai is relatively straightforward but involves a short ferry ride.

Santhiya, my favourite hotel in Koh Yao Yai
My favourite hotel in Koh Yao Yai.

If you stay at the luxurious Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resort, they offer a seamless private shuttle service from Phuket Airport.

This service includes a comfortable ride to the pier and a speedboat transfer directly to the hotel’s private pier.

I’ve personally used this service, and it works wonderfully – making your arrival stress-free and efficient.

Check out my video from Santhiya Koh Yao Yai here:

And let’s explore the transport options if you’re not staying at the luxurious hotel.

Taxi and Ferry

A popular and convenient option is to taxi from Phuket Airport to Bang Rong Pier, followed by a ferry or speedboat to Koh Yao Yai.

The taxi ride to the pier typically costs around 600-1,000 THB (about $17-$28 USD), and the ferry ticket ranges from 300 to 750 THB (approximately $8-$22 USD).

The total travel time is around 1.5 to 2 hours.

Shared Van and Ferry

For a more budget-friendly option, shared vans are available. These can cost between 200-300 THB (about $6-$9 USD) for the van ride and around 300-750 THB (about $8-$22 USD) for the ferry.

This option takes a bit longer due to multiple stops but is cost-effective.

Direct Ferry Services

You can also book direct ferry tickets which cost around 300-750 THB (about $8-$22 USD). These ferries depart from Bang Rong Pier and take about 30-45 minutes to reach Koh Yao Yai.

Private Speedboat

For a quicker and more exclusive transfer, you can opt for a private speedboat, which significantly reduces travel time but comes at a higher cost, around 1,500 to 3,000 THB (approximately $43-$86 USD).

Remember:

 • Book in Advance: Whether you choose the hotel’s private shuttle or other transport options, booking in advance ensures a smooth journey.
 • Plan for Delays: Ferries and speedboats operate on a schedule, so if your flight is delayed, it might be wise to have a pre-arranged overnight stay in Phuket.

Getting to Phi Phi

Travelling from Phuket Airport to the Phi Phi Islands is an adventure in itself, but it’s essential to plan carefully to ensure a smooth journey.

The distance from Phuket to Phi Phi is about 50 kilometres by the sea, and the only way to get there is by ferry or speedboat.

Here’s what you need to know to make the trip hassle-free.

Phi Phi Islands, maya bay
Maya Bay

Given the ferry schedules and the possibility of flight delays, booking an overnight stay in Phuket is highly recommended, and I’d recommend getting a hotel close to the ferry terminal.

This way, you avoid the stress of missing the last ferry and can start your trip to Phi Phi well-rested.

Staying near the Rassada Pier in Phuket Town can be very convenient. This area has numerous hotels and guesthouses, providing easy access to the ferry terminal the next morning.

A taxi from Phuket Airport to the ferry terminal costs around 600-1,000 THB (about $17-$28 USD) and takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour. This is the most convenient and quickest option.

Ferry Schedules

Ferries to Phi Phi generally run twice a day – at 8:30 and 12:30.

Ferry Tickets:

Ferry tickets from Phuket to Phi Phi range from 450 to 750 THB (about $12-$22 USD). The ferry ride takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, offering a scenic route through the Andaman Sea.

As always, you can get tickets at 12go.Asia.

Speedboats

For a quicker trip, speedboats are available, and it takes around 45 minutes to reach Phi Phi. These can cost between 785 to 1,500 THB (about $22-$43 USD), depending on the service and time of day.

So navigating your way from Phuket Airport to various popular destinations in and around Phuket can be a breeze with a bit of planning.

Whether you’re heading to Patong, Phuket Town, Karon, Khao Lak, Krabi, Ao Nang, Phi Phi Islands, or Koh Yao Yai, there are multiple transport options available to suit every budget and preference.

I hope this guide helps you plan your travels more effectively. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to leave a comment below, and I’ll be more than happy to help you out.

See all my Thailand Travel Guides here and make sure you choose the right area to stay in Bangkok if you’re planning on visiting the capital of Thailand (you should!).

Landing at Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) marks the beginning of an adventure in a city where tradition and modernity fuse in fascinating ways.

After my fourth trip to Thailand, I’ve mastered the art of getting from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to the city centre of Bangkok as easily and quickly as possible.

Kristoffer Føns from Destination Well Known in Bangkok
I love Bangkok and I’m sure you will too!

Please note that there are two airports in Bangkok: Suvarnabhumi is the main international airport whereas Don Mueang is the older and smaller airport.

Let me share the essentials for travelers seeking the most efficient and cost-effective ways to reach the center, honed by personal experience and a keen interest in transportation logistics.

This guide strips away the fluff, focusing on the crucial details for a smooth transition from touchdown to city exploration.

So, let’s get started: how to get from Bangkok Airport to the city centre?

Airport Rail Link

Bangkok Airport Rail Link
You can take the airport train directly to the city centre of Bangkok in about 30 minutes.

On my first few trips to Bangkok I took a taxi, but on my last trip where I stayed in a great hotel near Phaya Thai Station, I wanted to try the Airport Rail Link.

Taking the airport train from Bangkok Airport to the city centre was such a breeze and I’d encourage everyone reading this guide to consider this option.

airport train in Bangkok

Undoubtedly the fastest and most cost-effective method, the Airport Rail Link (ARL) zips you into downtown Bangkok with commendable speed and efficiency.

After landing, follow the signs to the train station in the airport’s basement.

Suvarnabhumi airport train station
The station is in the basement of the airport.

Main stations in Bangkok

Bangkok metro
Bangkok Metro map – touch the station you’re going to and buy the ticket, it’s super easy.

The ARL, no longer offering an express line, makes local stops, including a significant one at Makkasan Station (where you can change to the Bangkok Metro), approximately 35 minutes away.

This station is pivotal for some travelers, but the line continues to Phaya Thai Station, where you can connect to the Skytrain network.

I’m also talking a bit about the train ride in this Thailand travel guide:

Timetable & price

Trains depart every 15 minutes from 5:30 AM to midnight, with fares ranging from 15 to 45 baht, ensuring that you can reach your destination affordably, with the ride to Makkasan costing 35 baht and to Phaya Thai 45 baht.

45 baht is around $1.23, by the way.

It’s fairly easy to use the self-service ticket machines, but there is also staffed ticket kiosks where you can buy tickets from an English speaking member of staff.

If you haven’t booked your hotel in Bangkok yet, I’d recommend reading my guide on the best areas & places to stay – in that guide, I’m mentioning many lovely hotels near stations where you can catch the Airport Rail Link.

Official taxis

Bangkok taxis
You can’t take a TukTuk from the airport – the taxis are yellow and green like the one on the left here 😀

For travelers valuing direct access to their destination or those carrying significant luggage, opting for a metered taxi from Suvarnabhumi Airport presents a convenient solution.

Taxi rank with English speaking staff

Taxis rank at Suvarnabhumi Airport
The taxi rank at Suvarnabhumi Airport – everything runs smoothly here.

Upon clearing customs and immigration, head to the first level to locate the official taxi rank, where a structured system ensures a smooth transition to city travel.

At this queue, a desk clerk who speaks English will assist you by recording your destination – having it written in Thai is highly recommended for clarity – and assigning you to your next available driver.

Taxi meter = fair price

Unique to the airport experience, taxis from this official rank operate strictly on a metered basis, contrasting with the often reluctant use of meters by city-centre taxis.

This ensures transparency in fare calculation, starting with a base rate plus a 50 baht airport surcharge and any applicable expressway tolls, which could increase your total by an additional 70 baht or more, depending on your final stop in Bangkok.

Sometimes the taxi driver will ask you to pay the tolls directly and sometimes he will wait until your final destination and add it to your bill.

This metered approach from the airport guarantees a fair pricing structure right from the start, devoid of the bargaining or overcharging scenarios commonly faced when hailing taxis in the city center.

With traffic conditions as a variable, the overall cost remains within a reasonable bracket of around 250-500 baht depending on your final destination and the traffic on the day.

Taxi apps in BKK Airport

There’s also the option of using an app like Grab if you don’t want to use the official taxis.

However, I’d only use an app if there was a long line to the taxi rank, but I haven’t had that happen to me ever at BKK Airport.

The app also works in Phuket and Krabi.

Pre-booked taxis

Bangkok public transport rush hour
Beat the public transport rush hour with a pre-booked taxi.

For those who prioritize a straightforward and worry-free arrival in Bangkok, considering a pre-booked taxi service such as Welcome Pickups could be beneficial.

It provides a level of predictability and ease not always found with on-the-spot transportation choices, featuring an English-speaking driver who meets you at arrivals, ready to help with luggage and lead you to your pre-arranged ride.

Price for a pre-booked taxi from BKK Airport

Choosing a service like Welcome Pickups costs around 25 euros / 27 USD more than the usual fare for local taxis.

One of the standout features of Welcome Pickups is its transparent pricing.

With a clear upfront price, it eliminates the need for negotiation and provides a straightforward cost structure, which can be particularly appealing for those looking to avoid the potential hassle of negotiating fares or navigating the public transport system fresh off a long flight.

This option might only be for some, given the added expense compared to other modes of transport available at Suvarnabhumi Airport.

For travelers who place a premium on ease of transfer and a bit of personal assistance upon arrival, Welcome Pickups can be a game-changer.

Get a quote here.

It not only ensures a smooth transition from the airport to your destination but also sets a reassuring tone for your stay in Bangkok.

Public bus

I haven’t taken the public bus myself, so I’m not sure how it works and to be honest I don’t think taking the local bus is an option for most travelers.

Getting the airport rail link or a taxi makes more sense.

But I’ll quickly mention the option.

Operating 24/7, these buses offer a real insight into local life for just 35 baht per trip.

From the arrivals hall, a shuttle (costing 35 baht) will take you to the transportation center, where you can catch buses to various parts of Bangkok, including direct routes to Pattaya, Talad Rong Kluea, or NongKhai.

This enhances options for those looking to explore beyond the city limits immediately.

4 insider tips to Bangkok airport transport

Kristoffer Føns in Bangkok
Get ready to use public transport in Bangkok, it’s great.

Based on my travels, here are a few more indispensable tips to ensure a smooth transition from BKK to Bangkok:

1. Research Your Route Before You Land

Before your plane touches down, have a clear plan for how you’ll get to your destination. Whether it’s the Airport Rail Link (ARL), a taxi, or a ride-hailing app like Grab, knowing what to expect can save you time and stress.

If you’re considering public transport, familiarize yourself with the stops and any necessary transfers.

I use the Google Maps route planner option whenever I’m in Bangkok.

Bangkok train station

2. Consider the Time of Your Arrival

Bangkok is notorious for its unpredictable traffic. If you’re arriving during peak hours (7-9 AM and 4-7 PM), a taxi ride could take considerably longer than expected. In such cases, the ARL might be your fastest option.

3. Get Your Hotel’s Address in Thai

Bangkok hotel

This is a lifesaver, especially for taxi rides. Many drivers have limited English proficiency, so having your destination written in Thai can prevent miscommunications and ensure you get where you’re going more efficiently.

4. Be Prepared for the Climate

Bangkok’s heat and humidity can hit you like a wall, particularly if you’re coming from a cooler climate. Dress comfortably for the weather, and stay hydrated. If you’re taking public transport, note that air conditioning can be quite strong, so having a light jacket or shawl can make your journey more comfortable.

If you’ve got any questions about the journey from Bangkok Airport to the city centre or your trip to Thailand in general, feel free to ask in the comment sections below.

Official metered taxis are available at the taxi rank on the first level of the airport. Fares start with a base rate plus a 50 baht airport surcharge and any expressway tolls. The total cost usually ranges from 250 to 500 baht, depending on traffic and distance.

Is it possible to use a taxi app like Grab at Bangkok Airport?

Yes, you can use Grab.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, and it’s easy to get there by flying to the small airport (which you can fly to from several places in Thailand) or by ferry.

The island is located in the Gulf of Thailand east of Surat Thani, and it’s popular to combine a trip to Samui with visits to the nearby islands of Koh Phangan and Koh Tao (something I’ve done on several trips to Thailand).

I’ve been to Koh Samui for about two weeks, spread over two trips, so I know the island and its various areas very well.

Kristoffer Føns travel blogger in Koh Samui Airport
You can look forward to experiencing Samui Airport if you’re flying there – it’s cool! 😀

It’s worth noting that Koh Samui is actually a pretty large island, and there are big differences between the various holiday areas.

In this guide, I’ll explore the best places to stay in Koh Samui, depending on the type of holiday and atmosphere you’re looking for.

So, let’s get started: where to stay in Koh Samui?

Best Areas to Stay in Koh Samui

best areas to stay in Koh Samui

If you’re in a hurry or just want a quick overview, here are the best areas to stay in Koh Samui:

 • Choeng Mon – Peace & Authentic Samui Charm ⭐
 • Bophut – Best area to stay for families with children
 • Chaweng – The most lively tourist town on Samui
 • Lamai – A more laidback tourist area with a great beach
 • Mae Nam – Impressive sandy beach in tranquil surroundings

Click on the area name to see the best hotels there.

The guide continues below, where I delve deeper into the areas and recommend great hotels.

1. Choeng Mon – Peace & Authentic Samui Charm ⭐

Choeng Mon in Koh Samui is the perfect place to stay for those seeking a vacation filled with relaxation and adventure.

This area is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere, making it an excellent choice for families, couples, and anyone looking to enjoy some quiet time away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Get a feel for the beach in the area here:

I stayed here on my last trip to Samui (see my hotel in the section below) and loved the area’s vibe, which is super relaxed, yet you’re still close to other towns, making it easy to get “where the action is.”

Koh Samui restaurant recommendation
I recommend The Jumping Bean if you need a break from Thai food 😀

The beach in Choeng Mon is a true highlight with its white sand and crystal-clear water, perfect for sunbathing, swimming, and water activities in a less crowded environment than other places on Koh Samui.

See the best hotels in Choeng Mon here.

In addition to beach life, Choeng Mon offers a mix of luxurious resorts and budget-friendly hotels, so there’s something for every budget.

I stayed at the fantastic Sea Dance Resort.

Not far from Choeng Mon, you can visit the impressive Big Buddha statue. This must-see for culture enthusiasts offers a unique glimpse into local spirituality.

Big Buddha Koh Samui

The location of Choeng Mon is ideal.

It’s easy to access the island’s airport and is near lively areas like Chaweng and Bophut, which are great for shopping and nightlife (more on these areas later in the guide).

It literally took 10 minutes to get from the airport to my hotel. By the way, you can look forward to flying to or from Koh Samui airport; it’s really special in a good way.

You can fly to Samui from Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai, Singapore, and Hong Kong.

If you choose to stay in Choeng Mon, you’ll get the best of Koh Samui: beautiful beaches, cultural experiences, and a relaxing atmosphere.

Places to stay in Choeng Mon

As mentioned, this area of Koh Samui houses everything from luxury resorts and small boutique hotels to affordable bungalow hotels.

Here are some of my favorite hotels in Choeng Mon – starting with the most luxurious and then moving “down” in price.

Melia Koh Samui is a luxury hotel located directly on the beach, offering an unparalleled blend of comfort and elegance.

Melia Koh Samui

The hotel is known for its spacious rooms and suites, tastefully decorated with an eye for detail.

A unique feature of Melia Koh Samui is its lagoon-shaped swimming pools that weave through the property, creating a sense of a private oasis.

Guests particularly praise the hotel’s first-class service, exquisite dining options, and the peaceful atmosphere, making it the perfect retreat for those seeking relaxation in luxurious surroundings.

Previous guests also highlight the activities and facilities available for children, making it an ideal destination for families.

When I stayed at the Sea Dance Resort, I was fortunate enough to spend my nights in one of their villas with a private pool, and it was an absolutely lovely experience.

The villa was spacious and inviting with a small private pool, perfect for morning dips or relaxing afternoons in the sun.

The staff were also extremely nice, creating a really pleasant atmosphere at the hotel – it’s definitely the perfect place to just relax and enjoy your vacation.

I loved our little private pool.

The hotel is located by its own little beach, and there is no town immediately nearby – you have to walk about 200-300 meters up to the main road, where there’s a 7/11 and a couple of restaurants.

If you continue walking for about 10-15 minutes, you then reach Choeng Mon beach itself.

Melati Beach Resort & Spa, located right on the beach, is a rather luxurious hotel that can be booked at a surprisingly good price.

Melati Beach Resort & Spa

Here you can expect an atmosphere of peace and privacy, complemented by a state-of-the-art spa center where you can enjoy relaxing treatments.

The resort’s location by a peaceful bay means that you can enjoy the beach almost to yourself.

Melati Beach Resort & Spa pool villa

There are both normal hotel rooms and private pool villas. Melati Beach Resort & Spa is a great place to stay in Koh Samui for those seeking a luxurious and relaxing vacation with a personal touch, but where the price isn’t too high.

2. Bophut (Fisherman’s Village) – Best Area to Stay for Families with Children

Bophut, also known as Fisherman’s Village, is a charming mix of traditional Thai culture and modern conveniences. It is ideal for families and couples seeking a cozy base during their trip to Koh Samui.

The area stands out with its unique atmosphere, where old wooden houses along the narrow street tell stories of times gone by, now hosting trendy shops, restaurants, and cafes.

See the best hotels in Bophut here.

One of Bophut’s biggest attractions is the popular night market, where the main street transforms into a vibrant market.

Here, you can experience everything from live music and street performances to countless stalls selling local crafts, clothing, and, not least, street food that will spoil your taste buds with authentic Thai flavors.

When I was in Samui for the first time, I stayed here in Bophut, and it worked excellently as a base. It was an excellent place to stay as a first-time visitor.

You can see Koh Phangan from Bophut.

The beach in Bophut is more laid-back than many other beaches on Koh Samui, making it a perfect spot for those who want to relax under the palm trees or enjoy water activities in peace.

The water here is ideal for swimming, and the soft sandy bottom makes it particularly child-friendly.

Places to stay in Bophut

Bophut is one of Samui’s more popular holiday areas, so there are hotels in all price ranges. Let’s look at three good hotels in Bophut in different price categories.

Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort is a downright luxury hotel located directly on Bophut beach.

Anantara Bophut Koh Samui Resort

This resort offers an impressive combination of elegant rooms, suites, and villas designed with an eye for Thai aesthetics and comfort.

The hotel’s location doesn’t get much better in Koh Samui.

Guests can enjoy the resort’s spectacular infinity pool, which seems to merge with the sea’s horizon, as well as the award-winning Anantara Spa.

Holiday Inn Resort Samui Bophut Beach is a favorite among families who appreciate a relaxed holiday with easy access to everything.

The Waterfront Hotel at Fisherman’s Village is an excellent choice for travelers looking for an affordable yet charming accommodation.

3. Chaweng – The Most Lively Tourist Town on Samui

Chaweng is the place on Koh Samui where everything happens. Imagine a place where you can experience everything from sunrise to sunset and well into the night.

Chaweng, best area to stay for a lively vibe

It’s perfect for you if you’re young or just young at heart, and love to dive into a world of entertainment, shopping, and beach life.

If you’ve traveled around Thailand, Chaweng might remind you a bit of other lively tourist spots like Ao Nang in Krabi and Patong in Phuket, yet it still has its own unique charm.

See the best hotels in Chaweng here.

The beach here is fantastic – think white sand and turquoise water, where you can chill all day. And if you’re into activities, there’s plenty of water sports to get involved in.

But Chaweng isn’t just about the day. When the sun goes down, the town turns up the charm with a plethora of restaurants, bars, and nightclubs that keep the party going well into the night.

In Chaweng, you can find everything from budget-friendly hostels perfect for backpackers to luxurious resorts, so no matter what your wallet says, there’s a place for you.

Chaweng beach in Koh Samui

However, with so much going on, Chaweng can also become a bit overwhelming if you’re seeking silence and peace.

So, if you’re into more relaxed vibes, it might be a good idea to check out some of the other areas on the island.

It’s a great place to stay if you want to experience Koh Samui from its most energetic side, with all the opportunities for fun, party, and colors it entails.

Places to stay in Chaweng

As the largest holiday town on Koh Samui, there are naturally many hotels in Chaweng. Here are my favorites.

SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is a luxury hotel that provides the best conditions for a true dream vacation on Koh Samui.

SALA Samui Chaweng Beach Resort private pool villa

This impressive resort offers modern design rooms and private villas, some with direct access to the pool or even with their own pool, for the ultimate luxury experience.

Guests are spoiled with the resort’s state-of-the-art facilities, including a beachfront pool, a modern fitness center, and a soothing spa area.

4. Lamai – A More Laidback Tourist Area with a Great Beach

Lamai is like Chaweng’s relaxed little sister.

Lamai Beach, good area to stay in Koh Samui
The beautiful Lamai Beach.

Here you’ll find a wonderful mix of lively and laid-back, making Lamai the perfect place to stay on Koh Samui if you’re looking for a bit more peace without sacrificing the opportunity for great experiences.

The beach here can easily compete with Chaweng’s, and some would even say it’s better – think softer sand and crystal-clear water inviting you for long days under the sun.

See the best hotels in Lamai here.

Even though Lamai is a bit more laid-back, it doesn’t lack anything.

The town still boasts a vibrant nightlife with a plethora of bars and nightclubs where you can enjoy cold drinks and music.

Despite being Koh Samui’s second most popular holiday area, it has managed to retain a certain charm.

You get the feeling of a local community here, with small shops and markets where you can find everything from handmade crafts to fresh tropical fruits.

Grandfather Rock
The famous “Grandfather Rock” at the end of Lamai Beach… 😅

For those who want a place with a bit more room to breathe and relax, but still want easy access to entertainment and activities, Lamai is an obvious choice.

Here you can enjoy the best of both worlds: the beautiful, peaceful beach during the day and the lively nightlife as darkness falls.

Lamai is not a hidden gem without tourists, but it’s a place where you can feel a bit more away from it all, while still being right in the middle of it.

Places to stay in Lamai

As one of the most popular holiday areas on Koh Samui, there are plenty of great hotels to choose from – and hotels in Lamai are typically a tad cheaper than in Chaweng.

Silavadee Pool Spa Resort is the epitome of luxury and seclusion. Located just outside Lamai town, it ensures a sense of exclusivity and peace.

Silavadee Pool Spa Resort, luxury hotel in Lamai

This hotel is truly unique!

This impressive resort is known for its lavish villas and rooms, many with private pools and breathtaking sea views.

Guests can immerse themselves in ultimate relaxation at the resort’s world-class spa, enjoy gourmet meals at the fine dining restaurants, or relax by one of the spectacular infinity pools.

Guest reviews often highlight the friendly staff, the beautiful location, and the resort’s ability to create a sense of privacy and exclusivity, making it an ideal choice for couples and families looking for a relaxing seaside holiday.

This hotel offers comfortable and clean rooms at an affordable price, without compromising on location – a stone’s throw from Lamai Beach and close to the town’s many attractions.

The facilities are basic but sufficient for guests primarily out to explore the island and enjoy the beach life.

Previous guests particularly value the hotel’s good value for money, central location, and friendly service.

A good hotel in Lamai for those who want to stay affordably and don’t need much luxury.

5. Mae Nam – Impressive Sandy Beach in Tranquil Surroundings

Mae Nam is the spot on Koh Samui where you can truly slow down and enjoy island life at a more relaxed pace.

Mae Nam, best area to stay for a relaxed holiday in Koh Samui

Located on the island’s northern coast, here you’ll find a peaceful beach with soft sand and swaying palms – an idyllic setting that’s perfect for laid-back days in the sun.

What makes Mae Nam particularly appealing is the relaxed atmosphere, a far cry from the busier tourist areas on the island.

See the best hotels in Mae Nam here.

Here, you’ll find a nice mix of small, cozy cafes, local restaurants, and beach bars where you can enjoy freshly caught fish and seafood along with other culinary experiences without feeling (too) overwhelmed by tourist traps.

Though Mae Nam is a quieter corner of Koh Samui, it doesn’t mean there’s a lack of things to do.

Besides the wonderful swimming opportunities, the area offers everything from yoga and spa treatments to golf at one of the island’s most renowned courses.

Mae Nam Koh Samui

Mae Nam is the perfect place to stay for those seeking a more authentic experience of Koh Samui, away from the large crowds.

Of course, there are still other tourists – after all, Koh Samui is one of the most popular holiday areas in all of Thailand.

The area is a great place to stay for families, couples, and solo travelers who appreciate nature and peace but still want easy access to the island’s facilities and attractions.

Places to stay in Mae Nam

Mae Nam is a somewhat atypical area on Koh Samui compared to the other places I’ve mentioned in this guide, but there are still all types of accommodation options available.

Here are some of my favorite hotels in Mae Nam on the northern tip of Koh Samui.

Santiburi Koh Samui is a true gem among luxury hotels on the tranquil Mae Nam Beach.

Santiburi Koh Samui, luxury hotel in Mae Nam beach

This resort offers an exclusive experience with its spacious and elegantly decorated villas and suites, many with direct access to the private beach.

Where not to stay in Koh Samui?

koh samui thailand
You can’t go too wrong in Koh Samui.

Koh Samui is Thailand’s second-largest island, so it’s worth considering when looking for the best place to stay.

However, you might end up booking a hotel in a somewhat less ideal area.

It’s not that there are dangerous areas on Koh Samui – it’s an extremely safe and secure place for tourists (like the rest of Thailand). It’s more about convenience that I’m thinking of here.

What you should be aware of is more about not ending up staying in a bad area, where, for example, it’s far to a beach, restaurants, or other things to do.

Here are a couple of specific areas you, in my opinion, should avoid on Koh Samui:

Nathon

As the island’s main ferry port, Nathon is more of a commercial center than a holiday area. It lacks the high-quality beaches and tourist facilities most seek on a beach holiday.

If you’re arriving at Koh Samui by ferry, by the way, I can recommend the company Lomprayah.

Taling Ngam

Known for its natural beauty and fantastic sunsets, this area is, however, quite isolated compared to the island’s more lively areas, which might make it less ideal for those wanting to explore Koh Samui’s broad offerings.

Taling Ngam is located in the southwestern part of Koh Samui, and most ‘ordinary’ tourist areas are situated on the northeastern part of the island.

I hope you found this guide useful and that you now have a good overview of the different areas on this popular holiday island in Thailand.

If you’re still unsure about where to stay on Koh Samui, feel free to leave a comment below.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Which area is best to stay in on Koh Samui?

The ideal area to stay in Koh Samui depends greatly on the type of holiday you seek. Chaweng is the obvious choice if you’re after a lively atmosphere with many restaurants, bars, and nightlife.

Lamai might be the place for you if you prefer a more relaxed vibe with cozy cafes and fewer crowds.

Choeng Mon or Bophut, with its charming Fisherman’s Village, is ideal for those seeking luxurious relaxation and peace. Mae Nam is perfect for families or couples wanting a quiet beach holiday with the chance to experience authentic Thai culture.

Where is the best beach on Samui?

Koh Samui has many beautiful beaches, but the best one can vary depending on personal preferences. Chaweng Beach is the most popular for its fine white sand and crystal-clear water, but it can also be the most crowded.

Mae Nam Beach offers a more relaxed atmosphere for families or those seeking peace. Lamai Beach is a good choice for those wanting a balance between lively activities and relaxation options.

Is Chaweng or Lamai Beach better?

The choice between Chaweng and Lamai Beach again depends on your personal preferences. Chaweng Beach is for those looking for a lively beach scene with plenty of water sports, shopping, and nightlife options.

Lamai Beach has a more relaxed vibe but still offers a good selection of restaurants and bars and some of the island’s best natural attractions close by. Both beaches have beautiful clear water and fine sand beaches, so you can’t go wrong with either choice. My favorite is Lamai, as I like the slightly more relaxed atmosphere.

Nothing’s better than a coconut!

Food is a big part of the Siam experience.

Sindhorn Midtown, rooftop pool hotel in Bangkok city center

The highlight for me was starting each day with their incredible breakfast buffet. Breakfast buffets in Bangkok are usually very good, but this one was truly something else.

There’s also a big rooftop pool with a bar, which I very much enjoy: sitting up there, looking out over the skyline of Bangkok with a beer in hand, and then jumping into the pool.

The view is spectacular, especially as the city lights up at dusk.

2. Khao San Road – wild nightlife & backpacker vibes 🍹

Khao San Road is an iconic spot in Bangkok, particularly favored by backpackers and young travelers. So it was also the area I stayed in on my first trip to Bangkok when I was young.

Khao San Road, best area to stay in Bangkok for young travellers & backpackers

This part of Bangkok is known for its lively atmosphere, and it’s a hub for those looking to socialize, party, and connect with like-minded adventurers from around the world.

See the best hotels near Khao San Road here.

Khao San Road is a street packed with affordable hostels, bars, and street vendors, making it a paradise for travelers on a budget.

The nightlife here is pretty wild, with an array of bars and clubs that stay open late, offering a taste of Bangkok’s lively party scene.

The street itself transforms at night, filled with music, impromptu dance parties, and travelers sharing stories.

For daytime exploration, Khao San Road is within walking distance of some key attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Pho.

I also highly recommend the nearby Rambuttri Alley where the vibe is a lot more chilled and there are some great restaurants and bars without the loud music.

Rambuttri, cosy street near Khao San Road
Soi Rambuttri is a calmer version of Khao San Road.

Botanic Backyard Bar & Restaurant is awesome, for example.

However, it’s important to note that Khao San Road might not be the perfect area to stay in Bangkok for everyone.

Families, in particular, may find the night scene a bit overwhelming and the area’s general hustle a bit much.

It’s more suited for those seeking a vibrant, energetic experience and who don’t mind a bit of noise and crowds.

There are a lot of cheap hotels and hostels near Khao San Road.

There are even hostels on the road itself, but even if you’re a young backpacker, I’d recommend not staying right on the road as the music is incredibly loud all night long.

Here are some of the best places to stay near Khao San Road. There’s no point in me recommending a 5-star hotel here – if you want that kind of luxury, I’m sure you’re not looking to stay near Khao San Road anyway 😀

Villa De Khaosan by Chillax is one of the best hotels near Khao San Road.

Villa De Khaosan by Chillax rooftop pool

It’s budget-friendly, but don’t let the price tag fool you – this place has a cool, laid-back vibe that’s perfect for those looking to meet fellow travelers.

The rooftop pool is a standout feature, offering a great spot to relax and soak up the Bangkok sun.

With its combination of affordability, a vibrant atmosphere, and an awesome pool, Villa De Khaosan is a top pick for a fun and easygoing stay in the heart of the city’s backpacker haven.

Nouvo City Hotel is another option for those hanging around Khao San Road, especially if you’re watching your budget.

What’s impressive about this place is that despite the low prices, they don’t skimp on quality.

The rooms are nicely appointed, offering a comfortable and stylish retreat after a day out in the city.

But the real highlight is the rooftop pool – it’s like an urban oasis, perfect for a refreshing dip with a view.

I actually stayed here on my first-ever trip to Bangkok when I was a young traveler, and it was absolutely perfect.

And now, the perfect party hostel in Bangkok 😀

Mad Monkey is a name that rings a bell for many young travelers heading to Bangkok.

Mad Monkey Bangkok

It’s one of the city’s most famous hostels; it’s practically guaranteed you’ll meet other like-minded explorers here.

This place has a reputation for being a party hub, so if you’re looking to socialize and enjoy some lively evenings, you’re in the right spot.

The private rooms have their own bathroom, too.

But you can also book a private room, giving you that hotel-room privacy when you need a break from the buzz.

Whether you’re up for making new friends over a few drinks or want a cool, affordable place to crash, Mad Monkey Bangkok is a good option.

3. Silom – interesting area between the river & Lumpini Park 🦎

The next area on the list is a place where I stayed for a few nights on my 3rd trip to Thailand.

Silom is a road in the Bang Rak district that is known for its blend of business and leisure. It truly is a convenient and versatile area to stay in Bangkok.

Silom, one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok

I feel like it’s genuinely a nice mix of “everything,” – so you’ve both got a lot of tourist-friendly stuff, but you can also venture down the alleys and go where the locals go.

Its accessibility is a major draw, with excellent connections to the BTS Skytrain and the MRT (Metro).

See the best hotels in Silom here.

This makes exploring different parts of Bangkok from Silom incredibly straightforward, whether heading to historical sites or modern shopping centers in Siam.

A notable highlight of Silom is its proximity to the Chao Phraya River (especially if you stay in the western part of the area, near the river).

River Cruise in Bangkok is easy if you stay in Silom
Late-night river cruise in Bangkok on the Chao Phraya River.

This location is perfect for those interested in river cruises, which is something I think everybody should experience when they’re in Bangkok, as it’s a nice way to see Bangkok’s landmarks from a different vantage point.

Another gem near Silom is the lovely Lumpini Park (on the area’s eastern side).

Silom seen from Lumpini Park

This green oasis in the midst of the city is a wonderful retreat for those looking to escape the urban bustle.

Monitor Lizard in Lumpini Park
The lizards are harmless if you’re not a fish or a bird 😀

I love going near the lakes and seeing the monitor lizards – that’s pretty exotic to me as a guy from Denmark.

While Silom is a bustling business hub by day, it transforms into a lively area for dining and entertainment as evening falls. The area caters to all culinary tastes, from street food vendors to upscale restaurants.

However, it’s good to remember that Silom can be quite busy, especially during business hours, making it more suitable for those who enjoy an energetic atmosphere.

Places to stay in Silom

Silom is one of the best areas to stay in Bangkok and has been so for many years. So we’re spoilt for choice regarding hotels in this part of town.

Lebua at State Tower in Silom is not just any luxury hotel – it’s a place that’s gained fame from its appearance in the Hangover movie.

lebua at State Tower, The Hangover Hotel in Bangkok

I stayed here in 2019, and despite high expectations, I wasn’t disappointed. And I was really surprised how huge the rooms are – they are bigger than my apartment at the time back in Copenhagen 😀

Kris from Destination Well Known at Lebua hotel in Bangkok
Enjoying the view of Bangkok from Lebua.

Think sweeping city views, spacious suites, and top-notch service that makes you feel like a VIP.

One of the highlights is the rooftop bar and restaurant, offering some of the most breathtaking views of Bangkok.

Their breakfast buffet is undoubtedly the best and most over-the-top breakfast I’ve ever had; they had everything.

Chilling by the hotel pool.

Another excellent thing about the Lebua Hotel is that if you’ve got a late flight, you can use the gym and shower facilities even after you’ve checked out.

So you can get a shower and freshen up before heading to the airport – I really enjoyed that before my late-night flight back to Denmark.

4. Sukhumvit & Thonglor – big city vibes close to everything 🙌

Sukhumvit, stretching along one of Bangkok’s main roads, is a top pick for visitors seeking convenience and variety.

So if you want to stay in the hipster area of Bangkok, Thonglor is the place for you.

Thonglor is a hub for creative and contemporary culture, boasting a collection of chic cafes, boutique shops, and art spaces.

It’s an area of Bangkok where traditional Thai culture meets modern lifestyle, making it a fascinating area to explore.

This video from Terminal 21 in Sukhumvit is great:

The area’s bars and nightspots are stylish and often innovative, offering unique experiences that are a contrast to the more mainstream options in other parts of the city.

While Sukhumvit is ideal for those who want the convenience of being close to a bit of everything, Thonglor is perfect for visitors looking to experience a more youthful, hip side of Bangkok.

Places to stay in Sukhumvit

Sukhumvit stretches quite a long way, but the main thing is to be near the Sukhumvit road where the BTS Skytrain runs. Here are some of the best places to stay in that part of Bangkok.

5. Pratunam – city center & easy airport access ✈

I stayed in Pratunam on my 2nd trip to Bangkok and thought it was excellent, mainly because it’s so convenient.

Pratunam, city center area with good hotels
Pratunam is a good mix of new and old.

Pratunam is located right in the heart of Bangkok, and it offers excellent access from Suvarnabhumi Airport.

The Airport Rail Link provides a quick and efficient direct connection to this area, making it a convenient choice for visitors just arriving in the city or if you need to get to Suvarnabhumi to fly down to Phuket or Krabi.

See the best hotels in Pratunam here.

This easy accessibility is a major advantage for those looking to quickly immerse themselves in the city’s energy after a flight.

Pratunam is renowned for its active market scene, making it a dream destination for shoppers.

The famous Pratunam Market, one of the city’s largest, is a treasure trove of clothing, accessories, and various items at affordable prices.

Beyond shopping, the streets of Pratunam offer a taste of local life with many vendors selling Thai street food.

Street food in Bangkok

I thought it was cool to see so many small, local restaurants and street food vendors even though we’re in the absolute heart of the modern city.

In addition to its shopping and food scenes, Pratunam’s close proximity to key city landmarks and the convenience of public transport connections to other parts of Bangkok make exploring the city easy.

Places to stay in Pratunam

Pratunam is in the heart of Bangkok, near the Siam area I discussed earlier. So there’s no lack of excellent hotels in different price ranges here. Let’s start from the top.

Amari Watergate Bangkok is a fantastic choice in the Pratunam area, especially if you’re after a bit of luxury without a huge price tag.

Amari Bangkok pool

The hotel strikes an outstanding balance – it’s got all the plush comforts you’d expect from a high-end place, but the rates are surprisingly reasonable.

6. Chinatown – the most hectic & buzzing area ⛩

I think Chinatown is one of the most interesting areas in Bangkok.

Chinatown, the most hectic area of Bangkok

It’s an area full of life and activity, offering a deep dive into the city’s cultural richness. Chinatown showcases Bangkok’s authentic side, with its bustling streets, a diverse range of shops, food stalls, and markets.

However, for first-time visitors to Bangkok, especially those from Western countries who are new to Asia, Chinatown might be quite intense. I’m putting it out there so you don’t get overwhelmed if you stay in Chinatown.

Street food in Chinatown
Get some food at an outdoor restaurant and enjoy the vibes.

The area is known for its dynamic atmosphere and busy streets, which can be a bit much for those not used to such environments.

See the best hotels in Chinatown here.

When it comes to accommodations, Chinatown offers numerous budget-friendly options.

There’s a variety of affordable hotels and guesthouses, making it an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience the heart of Bangkok without a hefty price tag.

It’s important to note that Chinatown doesn’t have the best public transport links compared to other parts of Bangkok.

Metro in Chinatown Bangkok

While the BTS (Skytrain) and MRT (metro) lines aren’t as accessible here, there’s a good availability of taxis, which can be a convenient alternative.

And you do have the Wat Mangkon metro station, so it’s not like you can’t get anywhere from Chinatown by public transport.

Places to stay in Chinatown

You don’t stay in Chinatown for a 5-star luxury hotel with a rooftop pool, so check out the previous areas if that’s what you’re after.

However, one of the good things about staying in Chinatown is that the rates here are usually cheaper than in the other famous areas of Bangkok.

Shanghai Mansion Bangkok is not your ordinary hotel – it’s a unique boutique experience that takes you back to 1930s China.

Where not to stay? 3 Areas to Avoid in Bangkok!

Soi Cowboy, one of the areas to avoid in Bangkok
Soi Cowboy is one of the places to avoid in Bangkok.

Unfortunately, Thailand attracts some of the worst people in the world, and there are seedy areas of Bangkok that you should avoid.

Nana Plaza is a specific area that caters predominantly to sex tourism.

Known for its adult entertainment, including go-go bars and nightlife spots, it presents an atmosphere unsuitable for most travelers, particularly families or those seeking a culturally rich experience of Bangkok.

The environment in Nana Plaza is intensely focused on adult activities, making it a place to avoid for visitors not interested in this particular aspect of nightlife.

Soi Cowboy is another area in Bangkok known for its adult-oriented entertainment.

Characterized by its neon-lit bars and nightclubs, it primarily caters to an adult audience, with a strong focus on the sex tourism industry.

The atmosphere here is geared towards nightlife entertainment, which might not align with the preferences of many visitors.

Patpong, once notorious for its seediness and alignment with the sex tourism industry, has undergone significant changes in recent years.

Efforts have been made to clean up the area, making it less seedy than it used to be.

Despite these improvements, Patpong retains elements of its adult-oriented nightlife, with bars and entertainment spots catering to this specific audience.

So be aware that Patpong’s nightlife legacy still influences the area’s atmosphere.

Wat Arun in Bangkok is one of the main things you must see on your trip to Thailand.
Wat Arun in Bangkok is stunning.

These were my favorite areas and some of the best places to stay in Bangkok, covering various areas and hotels to suit different tastes and budgets.

Bangkok has something for everyone, whether you’re after the buzz of city life, a touch of luxury, or just a comfy spot that won’t break the bank.

If you have any questions about Bangkok or any of the areas and hotels mentioned, feel free to drop a comment below. I’m always happy to help fellow travelers make the most of their Bangkok adventures.

Frequently asked questions:

Which area in Bangkok is best to stay?

The best area to stay in Bangkok depends on what you’re looking for: Siam for shopping and central location, Sukhumvit for nightlife and variety, Silom for business and upscale dining, and Khao San Road for budget-friendly options and a youthful vibe.

Where should I stay in Bangkok for the first time?

For first-time visitors, staying in the Siam area is ideal. It’s central, offers easy access to public transport, and has a mix of shopping, cultural sites, and dining options, providing a great introduction to Bangkok.

Which is better Sukhumvit or Siam?

Siam is better for first-time visitors due to its central location, proximity to major attractions, and ease of public transportation. It’s perfect for getting a feel of Bangkok’s diverse culture and lifestyle. While appealing, Sukhumvit is more suited for return visitors looking for nightlife and a more local experience.

The post Where to Stay in Krabi? 6 Best Areas + Unique Places to Stay 🇹🇭 appeared first on Destination Well Known.

]]>
Krabi is an area in Thailand that is tailor-made for tourists seeking a blend of stunning nature, some of the world’s best beaches, and plenty of options for excursions or total relaxation, depending on what you’re after.

Krabi is a region located in southern Thailand, approximately a one-hour flight from Bangkok, and with its airport, it’s easy to start or end a tour of Thailand here.

In other words, it makes perfect sense to stay in Krabi and travel around to several different areas within Krabi.

I’ve travelled around Krabi on several trips to Thailand, so I have a good overview of what you get in the different areas.

Krabi Thailand
In Krabi, you’ll find both the well-known holiday areas with a touristy vibe and small, unspoiled gems.

Below, I share the best areas and recommendations for the best places to stay.

So whether you want to stay in a lively town, on one of the world’s best beaches, or at a luxury resort, you’ll have the opportunity here in Krabi.

Where to stay in Krabi? Let’s get started with the guide.

Best Areas in Krabi

If you’re short on time or need a quick overview, here are the best areas to stay in Krabi:

 • Ao Nang – best all-around holiday area ⭐
 • Railay – stay at one of the world’s best beaches 🏖
 • Phi Phi – a lively holiday island with beautiful beaches 🍹
 • Krabi Town – the main city in Krabi with local life 🇹🇭
 • Koh Lanta – the best island for families with children 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦
 • Tubkaek Beach – a peaceful area perfect for couples 👩‍❤️‍👨

Click on the name of the area above to see the best hotels there.

The guide continues below, where I dive deeper into the different areas and recommend hotels.

1. Ao Nang – best all-round holiday area ⭐

If you’re planning a trip to Thailand and are seeking the perfect balance between adventure and relaxation, then Ao Nang is the place for you.

Ao Nang, the Best Area in Krabi for Most Tourists
The main road in Ao Nang with the beach and limestone cliffs in the background.

It’s the most prominent tourist area in Krabi, and there are plenty of good reasons for that:

In Ao Nang, everything is within walking distance – from your hotel to the beach to many dining options.

The town is more or less designed with tourists in mind.

You can start your morning with a stroll along the beach, grab a pad thai for lunch, and hop on a longtail boat to Railay Beach – all without the hassle of long travel times.

Get a feel for Ao Nang in this video:

Hotels in Ao Nang range from budget-friendly to pure luxury, so there’s something for every budget.

Many places offer fantastic pools, spa facilities, and the eminent view of the limestone cliffs this part of Thailand is famous for.

Check out the best hotels in Ao Nang here.

But the true appeal of Ao Nang is its location, which makes it the perfect springboard to some of Thailand’s most beautiful natural experiences.

There are a lot of things to do in Ao Nang.
The night market in Ao Nang is popular.

As previously mentioned, you can easily take a longtail boat over to Railay Beach, known as one of Thailand’s most beautiful (more on that later in the guide) or go on a 4 Islands Boat Tour to paradise islands just like the ones you’ve seen on Instagram.

There are countless opportunities for sea excursions, and you can also drive to places within Krabi like the Tiger Cave Temple, Klong Root, and then there’s Krabi Airport, which is only about 25 km away from Ao Nang.

It’s convenient to go on day trips and then come “home” to an area with a lot of life in the evenings.

Markets light up with colorful lights, and stalls abound with local crafts and delicacies.

Restaurants and bars offer international and local food, and you can find everything from quiet, romantic corners to places where music and dance continue well into the night.

So, if you’re looking for a holiday area in Krabi that offers the best of everything – from easy access to stunning natural beauty to a secure base with plenty of shops and restaurants, then Ao Nang is the place to stay.

If I have to mention a downside to Ao Nang, it would undoubtedly be that it is a very touristy area. So, if you’re travelling to Thailand solely to slow down and experience a more local side of the country, then Ao Nang is not the place.

On the other hand, if you’re travelling around and want to stay in several places in Thailand, then Ao Nang is a really good place to stay for a few days to have a base and, from there, go on excursions.

Places to stay in Ao Nang

On my fourth trip to Thailand, I researched hotels in Ao Nang extensively and was surprised at how affordable they were compared to those in the main areas of Phuket and other popular holiday areas in Thailand.

So you get a lot for your money in this area – here are some of my favourite hotels in Ao Nang.

Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi offers a prime location right on the beachfront, meaning you can step directly onto the soft sand from your door.

Centara Ao Nang Beach Resort & Spa Krabi, best place to stay in Ao Nang for luxury

This resort is a hit for families and couples looking for a mix of sun, sea, and spa luxury.

Guests particularly praise the impressive pool areas, close access to the sea, and the resort’s ability to create a sense of exclusive seclusion despite its central location.

Reviews often highlight the friendly staff and the spacious, clean rooms, making it an obvious choice for those who value comfort and service.

See more photos and book here.

Right in the heart of Ao Nang, you’ll find the Holiday Inn Resort, a gem for cost-conscious travellers and families.

This place offers the reliable comfort that Holiday Inn is famous for, wrapped in Thai hospitality.

Guest reviews warmly speak of the clean and comfortable surroundings, kid-friendly pools, and the undisturbed relaxation experienced here.

With its central location, the hotel is a stone’s throw from the beach and Ao Nang’s shopping and dining options, making it a safe choice for an effortless and enjoyable holiday.

A perfect place to stay for families with children travelling to Krabi, but it’s not just a family-oriented hotel.

Andaman Breeze Resort is a hidden gem tucked away from Ao Nang’s bustling beachfront, offering an oasis of peace and spectacular views from its elevated pool area.

The hotel is significantly cheaper than the previously mentioned places to stay in Ao Nang.

Andaman Breeze Resort Ao Nang, pool area with a view

Reviews praise the place’s relaxed atmosphere, helpful staff, and value for money.

The rooms are comfortable and well-maintained, and even though you’re a bit away from the beach, the magnificent view of the limestone cliffs compensates for the distance.

Perfect for those who prefer to sleep away from the noise but still want easy access to Ao Nang’s many offerings.

2. Railay – stay at one of the world’s best beaches 🏖

On my first trip to Thailand, we started in Bangkok and flew to Krabi, drove for about 30 minutes, and then took a boat to Railay. And I must admit, I highly recommend staying in this part of Krabi.

Railay, stay by one of the best beaches in Thailand
Railay Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Thailand, perhaps the world.

Railay is one of those unique spots on the globe where you find the tranquility that’s hard to match.

Railay is not an island, but because of the majestic limestone cliffs surrounding this small area, you can’t drive there, so there’s a very laid-back island vibe.

Staying in Railay means waking up to the sight of the magnificent limestone cliffs rising from the turquoise sea and strolling along some of the world’s most beautiful beaches.

Railay West is the most popular, known as Railay Beach, with soft sand and crystal-clear water, while Railay East has more budget-friendly hotels – there’s no beach here, but instead, you get a more affordable price.

And you can walk over to Railay West in a couple of minutes.

See the best hotels in Railay here.

Evenings in this little holiday paradise are quiet, with a relaxed vibe, where you can enjoy a drink under the stars or listen to the gentle strum of an acoustic guitar.

In other words, not much really happens, so you have to know that when you stay in Railay, it is exclusively to enjoy the beautiful nature and the peace.

Railay East
Railay East

You can also go on many of the same excursions (at least on boat trips) from here as you can from Ao Nang.

For example, I went on the popular Four Islands tour from Railay, and I think that’s a must-do.

If I have to mention any drawbacks, you can feel isolated and maybe miss being able to walk into a 7/11 and buy some cheap snacks – the prices in the small kiosks and restaurants in Railay are pretty high compared to, for example, Ao Nang.

They know that you don’t have many options, so the prices are jacked up 😀

However, I highly recommend staying here for a few days if you want to try staying in some of Thailand’s – and perhaps the world’s – most beautiful surroundings.

Places to stay in Railay

Railay is the smallest area in Krabi I mention in this guide, so there are fewer choices than usual. But here are some of my favourite hotels in Railay – across different price ranges.

Rayavadee in Railay West is the epitome of luxury in Thailand’s most breathtaking settings.

With its exclusive location surrounded by cliffs and sea, this resort offers a unique combination of natural beauty and five-star service.

Rayavadee Railay, best place to stay in Railay Beach

Previous guests talk about the attentive service, exquisite dining options, and private villas that provide peace and privacy.

Reviews often highlight the relaxing spa area and the activities organised by the resort. For travellers seeking ultimate relaxation and luxury, Rayavadee is the perfect choice.

See more photos and book here.

Railay Village Resort welcomes families and anyone looking for comfort and relaxation with open arms.

This family-friendly hotel, located in the heart of Railay and right on the beach, is known for its hospitality and delightful facilities that ensure a comfortable stay for guests of all ages.

Hotel in Railay on the beach
If you dream of ‘staying on the beach’ in Railay, this hotel is for you.

Reviews praise the spacious rooms, the inviting pool area, and the easy access to Railay Beach.

The atmosphere is relaxed, and the staff go the extra mile to ensure families have everything they need for a memorable holiday.

Railay Village Resort is an excellent choice for those who want comfort and friendliness in beautiful surroundings.

Railay Phutawan Resort is ideal for budget-conscious travellers who dream of experiencing Railay’s beauty without breaking the bank.

Railay Phutawan Resort, affordable hotel in Railay

The hotel is situated in the heights, away from the hustle and bustle of the beach, providing guests with a peaceful retreat with breathtaking views of the limestone cliffs.

Guest reviews highlight the hotel’s good value for money, helpful service, and comfortable, clean rooms.

Even though it’s not right on the beach, the nearby path provides easy access to Railay East and West.

3. Phi Phi – a lively holiday island with beautiful beaches 🍹

And let’s now address the first island in Krabi in this guide.

Phi Phi Islands are two islands, but only one is inhabited – the other houses the famous Maya Bay, known from the iconic film The Beach.

Phi Phi, best place to stay in Krabi for party and stunning nature

Phi Phi, both the inhabited island Phi Phi Don and Maya Bay island called Phi Phi Leh, are popular excursion destinations for tourists in mainland Krabi and Phuket.

See the best hotels on Phi Phi here.

Maya Bay
Maya Bay back when swimming was allowed – swimming is now prohibited to protect wildlife and plant life on the beautiful beach.

The islands’ popularity is quite noticeable in the small town, which is so compact there are no cars, and one can walk from one side of the island (where the ferry docks) to the other, where the main beach is located.

Here, it’s packed with hotels of varying price ranges, and it’s extremely important to do some research before booking.

Phi Phi Leh
I recommend taking a boat tour to experience Phi Phi from the sea; it’s a must!

I made a mistake when I first visited Phi Phi and wanted to stay close to the many bars and restaurants, but I ended up booking a hotel that was out by a private beach – charming but far from the night life.

While the island is known for its vibrant party culture that attracts a lively crowd of globe-trotting youths, that’s not the whole story. Though the night brings festivities, the days offer opportunities to discover the island’s soul.

Nature trails are winding through lush greenery and secret beaches where you can enjoy tranquillity.

Get an impression of Phi Phi in this video:

You can also find quieter accommodations away from the main areas, where you can wake up to the sound of waves and a spectacular sunrise.

However, there are a lot of tourists who come to experience this unique gem in Thailand, so as I said before – there is limited local culture.

Some would say there are too many people to truly enjoy the island, especially in the peak season in January and February.

 • I’m not saying this to deter you from staying on Phi Phi, but I promised an honest guide on the best areas to stay in Krabi – so I’m telling both the good and the less good things so you can make a well-considered decision.

Maya Bay doesn’t look quite the same as in the movie – the background is computer-generated 😀

Places to stay in Phi Phi

You should be mindful when booking your hotel on Phi Phi. There is a great difference in the atmosphere depending on where on the island you stay – let me, therefore, recommend a couple of hotels that cater to different types of travellers.

SAii Phi Phi Island Village stands in a class of luxury on its own, situated in a more secluded part of Phi Phi, where the silence and sounds of nature create an atmosphere of peace and exclusivity.

This resort is a favourite among those looking to escape the more touristy areas and enjoy the island’s beauty and tranquillity.

Past guests talk highly of the private bungalows scattered along the pristine beach, the personal service, and the eco-friendly initiatives.

With its own stretch of beach and a sense of secluded luxury, SAii Phi Phi Island Village is the perfect retreat for travellers looking for a more authentic and relaxed Phi Phi experience.

Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort is one of the island’s top hotels, and its location is arguably the best – right by the island’s most beautiful beach and within walking distance to Phi Phi’s ‘town’.

However, the hotel is at the end of the beach, away from the parties, so you won’t have to listen to thumping bass all night long.

Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort, best hotel near everything in Phi Phi

This hotel offers a charming mix of Thai hospitality and modern comforts, making it an attractive base for visitors to the island.

Guest reviews highlight the resort’s delicious infinity pool, direct beach access, and cosy bungalows that provide a sense of privacy and tranquillity amidst the island’s bustle.

Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort is an ideal place to stay in Phi Phi for travellers who want to be pampered with comfort and easy access to all that Phi Phi has to offer.

And then there’s the complete opposite – a hotel close to where everything happens in the evening.

Phi Phi Indigo Hotel is the obvious choice for nightlife enthusiasts and party-loving souls who want to immerse themselves in Phi Phi’s nightlife.

The hotel is in an area known for its many bars and lively street atmosphere.

Down on the beach by Slinky Bar, there are always parties every evening, so it’s easy to get there “where it happens” on Phi Phi from this hotel.

If you’ve come to celebrate life and meet new people in a festive atmosphere, Phi Phi Indigo is where your search for fun never ends.

It’s also a super budget-friendly hotel where things are still well managed.

4. Krabi Town – the main city in Krabi with local life 🇹🇭

Krabi Town is a prime location for those seeking a more local and authentic Thai experience.

Unlike the tourist-frequented beach areas such as Phi Phi and Ao Nang, Krabi Town offers an authentic taste of daily life in Thailand, complete with bustling markets, street food stalls, and a friendly local populace.

Krabi Town transport
Transportation is convenient, with easy access between Krabi and Ao Nang – naturally, in both directions.

Krabi Town is an excellent hub for exploring the region’s natural wonders, as it’s straightforward to arrange day trips to nearby national parks and beaches.

Check out the best hotels in Krabi Town here.

This locale is ideal for those who want to blend relaxation with adventure: embark on a kayak adventure through the mangroves by day, then return to the genuine atmosphere of the town by night.

While the nightlife is less intense than Phi Phi’s or Ao Nang’s, there’s still a good selection of restaurants and bars for evening entertainment.

Krabi Town is for you if you’re looking to delve into the Thai community and live a bit more in harmony with the locals, all while having easy access to some of the country’s most impressive landscapes.

The major downside is the absence of a beach in Krabi Town, so please remember this before booking your hotel here.

Places to stay in Krabi Town

I understand that Krabi Town might not be the most obvious choice for spending an entire holiday in Thailand, but I believe it deserves to be mentioned – after all, it’s the town that gives the entire region its name.

Plus, the hotels in Krabi Town are affordable!

Therefore, I introduce two good places to stay in Krabi Town that offer great value for money.

The Seens Hotel provides a budget-friendly stay without compromising on quality. Located in the city centre, it offers guests easy access to local markets and cultural attractions.

Koh Lanta is a dream destination for families and those seeking a peaceful retreat from the busier tourist areas in Thailand.

Koh Lanta, the best area to stay for families with children
There are many beautiful sandy beaches with shallow waters in Koh Lanta.

The island is known for its relaxed atmosphere, perfect for families with children.

Here, the busy streams of backpackers and nightlife seekers are replaced with quiet days on broad beaches and a friendly local culture that welcomes all ages.

In recent years, Koh Lanta has also become popular among digital nomads who like the tranquil surroundings.

I was here on my first trip to Thailand and liked the atmosphere, which starkly contrasted with the fast life in Ao Nang and Phi Phi – and then the nature is also beautiful on Koh Lanta.

See the best hotels in Koh Lanta here.

The beaches here are ideal for the little ones in the family with their gentle waves and clear, shallow waters, making them safe playgrounds for children.

But it’s not only for families; Koh Lanta also attracts those looking for a place to unplug.

At Koh Lanta, you can immerse yourself in yoga meditation and enjoy healthy, delicious food at the many beach restaurants focusing on organic and local products.

There is also plenty of local life on Koh Lanta.

Koh Lanta is full of local life

So, if you’re looking for a place to relax with your family, enjoy nature right outside your doorstep, and take in a more authentic Thai atmosphere, then Koh Lanta is the best place to stay in Krabi.

The island is about a 1.5-hour drive from Krabi Airport – you take a small ferry from the mainland, which only takes a few minutes. We drove in a minibus where we didn’t even have to get out, so it was very fast.

If you’re considering Koh Lanta, also check out my guide on where to stay in Phuket, where I tell you about Koh Yao Yai, which has a bit of the same vibe – although it’s even less visited by tourists.

Places to stay in Koh Lanta

So, Krabi offers many accommodation options that cater to every taste and travel style. The choices are abundant, from the tourist-friendly Ao Nang, perfect for any traveller, to the secluded peace of Railay or the tranquil charm of Krabi Town.

Phi Phi is the place for those seeking party vibes and stunning nature, while families and couples find their paradise in Koh Lanta and Tubkaek.

Each destination and hotel has its unique appeal, so no matter what you are looking for, Krabi promises to have a place that can become your home away from home.

If you have any questions about any of the areas, feel free to leave a comment below. You can also check out the guide on where to stay in nearby Phuket if you consider travelling further in Thailand.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where is the best place to stay in Krabi?

The best place to stay in Krabi really depends on what you are looking for on your trip. If you want a lively atmosphere with easy access to restaurants and day trips, Ao Nang is ideal.

For a more secluded and scenic experience, Railay is perfect, accessible only by boat and known for its breathtaking beauty. Krabi Town offers a more local feel with cultural experiences and markets.

Phi Phi is for those who seek beauty combined with nightlife, while Koh Lanta is the perfect choice for families wanting a calm and relaxed atmosphere.

Tubkaek is ideal for couples looking for a romantic getaway to luxurious resorts and quiet beaches.

Which is better, Krabi or Phuket?

Krabi and Phuket offer unique experiences, and their choice depends on personal preferences. Phuket is known for its vibrant nightlife, shopping options, and tourist attractions.

On the other hand, Krabi is praised for its magnificent nature and dramatic landscapes, especially the imposing limestone cliffs that rise from the sea and offer a more relaxed atmosphere. Krabi also boasts less crowded beaches and a more authentic Thai experience, which may appeal to those seeking tranquillity and nature.

I like both areas in Thailand – each place has unique characteristics.

Is Krabi worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely! Krabi is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Thailand, with its breathtaking limestone cliffs, crystal-clear waters, and picturesque beaches. The area is a paradise for nature lovers, adventurers, and those seeking relaxation in idyllic surroundings. It would be a shame to travel to Thailand and not experience Krabi and the islands in the Andaman Sea.

When is the best time to travel to Krabi?

The ideal time to travel to Krabi is between November and April when the weather is dry and sunny, perfect for beach days and exploring the scenic beauty. This is the high season, so expect larger crowds and higher prices.

However, a visit in the low season, such as in August, can also be charming. Although the sun may not shine as much and there can be more rain, the temperature is still warm, and you can enjoy the area’s attractions without the large crowds. Hotels and resorts are often much more affordable outside the high season. For example, I visited Phi Phi, Railay, and Koh Lanta in August, and it was still a great experience.
