I’ve been lucky enough to have visited Barcelona four times and gotten to know its different areas quite well (I’m even heading back soon for the Primavera Festival).

But one particular area won my heart a few years back – Gracia, of course.

In this post, I’ll share some personal insights about this place and answer a question many travelers ask: Is Gracia a good place to stay in Barcelona?

I really like Gracia, but I’ve noticed some misconceptions about it online. Let’s clear those up and give you a real feel for what it’s like to stay there.

Where is Gracia and what is it known for?

From my visits to Barcelona, Gracia always stands out as a neighborhood with its own character.

Once a separate town until Barcelona annexed it in 1897, this district retains a distinct feel with its compact streets and vibrant community squares, such as Plaça de la Virreina and Plaça del Sol​​.

I’ve always enjoyed the laid-back ambiance of Gracia’s many plazas, perfect for sipping coffee or enjoying meals outside.

Where some of the other famous areas of Barcelona can feel a bit over-touristy sometimes, Gracia is still an area where the locals come together and enjoy the many bars and cafés.

My 5 favourite things to do in Gracia

I genuinely believe that Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Barcelona, so here are my five favorite things to do in this lovely area.

Dining at Tapeo Gràcia

This is a must for any food lover. Tapeo Gràcia offers a delightful selection of tapas that are both inventive and deeply rooted in Spanish culinary traditions.

It’s a fantastic spot to dive into dishes like patatas bravas or squid ink croquettes, each bursting with flavor.

Sipping Vermouth at Vermuteria Puigmartí

No visit to Gracia is complete without stopping by Vermuteria Puigmartí. This cozy spot is perfect for enjoying a glass of vermouth, a beloved local aperitif.

Pair your drink with olives or anchovies for a truly authentic experience.

Relaxing at Plaça del Sol

It’s a pleasure just sitting and soaking up the atmosphere at Plaça del Sol. It’s a popular gathering place for locals, often filled with the sounds of conversation, laughter, and occasionally live music.

The plaza’s vibrant scene gives you a genuine feel for Gracia’s everyday life and culture.

Exploring the Artisan Shops

Gracia has so many small, independent shops where local artisans sell their crafts.

From handmade jewelry to bespoke clothing and unique home decor, browsing these shops is not only a way to find one-of-a-kind items but also to support local artists and artisans.

Visiting Casa Vicens

For architecture enthusiasts, Casa Vicens, one of Gaudí’s first major works, is a must-see. This house is less frequented by tourists than other Gaudí buildings in Barcelona, offering a more serene experience.

The design and details of the building reflect the innovative spirit of Gaudí and provide insight into the early stages of his remarkable career in architecture.

Why you should stay in Gracia

If you’re looking to really explore what Barcelona offers beyond the usual tourist spots, Gracia is the place to stay.

It’s just a stone’s throw from Barcelona’s main tourist areas, but it’s totally different from places like the Rambla or the Gothic Quarter.

This part of Barcelona is a haven for anyone in their 20s or 30s – or, frankly, anyone drawn to a more authentic local vibe. Gracia’s lively plazas, quirky shops, and local festivals make it an insider’s gem.

Here, you can blend in with the locals, sip coffee in artsy cafes, and experience Barcelona through the eyes of those who call it home.

My 2 favourite places to stay in Gracia

As Gracia isn’t one of the main touristy areas in Barcelona, there aren’t many hotels to choose from. But there are some!

So let me share two of my favorite places to stay in Gracia below – the first one even has a swimming pool.

The Catalonia Gracia is one of the best places to stay in Gracia.

This hotel is all about comfort and convenience and is located in the heart of Gracia. What sets this place apart is its lovely swimming pool – a rare find in hotels in this part of Barcelona.

Who should not stay in Gracia?

There might be better choices than Gracia if you’re a typical tourist looking to hit all the major sights effortlessly or if you’re traveling with children. 

The streets of Gracia can be narrow and sometimes hilly, potentially challenging for families with strollers or those who prefer less walking. 

It’s also not the easiest area to get to from Barcelona Airport.

If you come to Barcelona looking for quick, easy access to iconic landmarks and more tourist-oriented services, you might find areas closer to the city center more convenient and accommodating.

Sardinia is Italy’s second-largest island (after Sicily) and a destination that had been on my bucket list for many years before I finally visited the island.

Quick price note for 2026: Hotel prices in Sardinia vary a lot by area and season. Expect to pay around €100-160 per night for a good mid-range hotel, but the Costa Smeralda area can easily cost double that in peak season. Booking well in advance for June-August is essential, as popular hotels sell out early.

1. Alghero – a fantastic cosy city with a beach

Alghero, also known as “little Barcelona” is a real gem on the northwestern coast of Sardinia.

The town is a fascinating mix of Italian charm and Catalan heritage, embedded in its cobblestone streets, Gothic buildings, and the impressive city wall surrounding the old town.

When you step into Alghero, it’s like stepping back in time – it’s a bit cliché, but in this case, I believe it’s true.

At least when you enter the old town by the harbour – the rest of the town is a bit of a classic Italian holiday city if you can talk about it.

The narrow, winding streets of the old town are filled with charming shops selling local crafts and cosy cafes where you can enjoy an espresso or a gelato.

I’ve also made a video where I’m showing Alghero (and Olbia, which I’ll get to in this guide):

Plenty of excellent restaurants will also serve everything from freshly caught fish and seafood to traditional Sardinian dishes.

But Alghero is not just for history lovers. The area is also home to some fantastic beaches in Sardinia.

The city’s own sandy beach is not the most beautiful, and there can be a bit of a seaweed smell, so if you want to experience lovely places, you have to head to the more secluded bays at Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto.

The crystal-clear water is perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or basking in the sun.

Alghero is also a fantastic starting point to explore some of Sardinia’s most impressive natural wonders.

You can take a boat trip to the spectacular Neptune’s caves, visit the nearby Porto Conte nature reserve, or take a trip to the dramatic Capo Caccia.

So, Alghero is a city that has it all – history, culture, beautiful beaches, and fantastic food.

It is the perfect place to stay for those who want to experience the best of Sardinia, whether you’re an adventurous traveller, a beach bum, a food lover, or a curious tourist.

There’s also an international airport, so you can quickly get to your hotel without travelling far.

Places to stay in Alghero

Let’s take a closer look at some of the best hotels in Alghero. I recommend hotels in the old town or very close to it here.

And then we also have a more classic holiday hotel with a fantastic swimming pool – but please note that this hotel is not in the old town!

Hotel Calabona is located a bit on the outskirts of Alghero and offers a peaceful retreat that is still conveniently close to the city’s best things to do.

This 4-star hotel is right by the sea, and many rooms offer a stunning view of the azure bay.

Although Hotel Calabona offers a sense of tranquillity and seclusion, it’s only a short drive or a pleasant walk along the coast to Alghero’s old town.

If you’re looking for accommodation in Sardinia that combines relaxation, comfort, and convenience, then Hotel Calabona is an excellent choice.

2. Cagliari – the island’s capital with local life

Cagliari, Sardinia’s largest city and “capital”, is located in the southern part of the island and is a metropolis of history, culture, and natural beauty.

It’s a cosmopolitan city that pulsates with life, where you can find everything from exciting cultural experiences to delicious culinary adventures.

Here you’ll find historical gems, such as the Bastione di Saint Remy, and a thriving nightlife with trendy bars and restaurants.

And let’s not forget the city’s beaches. Poetto Beach, one of the longest sandy beaches in Italy, is the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sun or engage in water sports such as surfing and kitesurfing.

If you’re a city lover who also appreciates culture, history, gastronomy, and access to beautiful beaches, Cagliari will undoubtedly be an excellent choice for your stay in Sardinia.

Places to stay in Cagliari

Like any other Italian metropolis, Cagliari has plenty of good and less good hotels. Here are a few good places to stay in different price ranges.

We start with a hotel for those who want to stay centrally but don’t need the utmost luxury.

Hotel Due Colonne is an affordable, 3-star hotel that allows you to experience all Cagliari offers without breaking the budget.

With its ideal location in the city centre, you’re just a stone’s throw from the harbour, where you can enjoy the sight of yachts and sailboats and a wide selection of restaurants and shops.

The hotel rooms are simple but comfortable and clean, with all the necessary conveniences, including air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and a private bathroom.

Some rooms even have a view of the harbour, adding a lovely touch to your stay.

Hotel Due Colonne has a 24-hour front desk, and the staff are always ready to help arrange tours or advise on the best places to visit in Cagliari.

And then we jump to a more luxurious hotel.

UNAHOTELS T Hotel Cagliari is an oasis of style and comfort in Sardinia’s capital.

This 4-star hotel is an ideal accommodation for those who appreciate well-being, modern aesthetics, and a high standard of service.

The rooms are spacious, bright, and inviting, with an elegant design reflecting the hotel’s modern charm.

Every detail has been carefully considered, from the luxurious bed linen to the stylish bathrooms, ensuring a relaxed and comfortable stay.

And then we leave southern Sardinia and travel north.

3. Olbia – City Close to Some of Sardinia’s Best Beaches

I’ve stayed in Olbia and chose the city mainly because we flew into the airport. It’s a perfect place to stay if you want to enjoy a town brimming with restaurants while being close to some of Sardinia’s most stunning beaches.

Staying in Olbia gives you easy access to the renowned Costa Smeralda (more about Costa Smeralda later in this guide on where to stay in Sardinia), famous for its crystal-clear waters, idyllic coves, and luxurious resorts.

From the family-friendly beaches in Pittulongu to the more secluded and untouched beaches like Spiaggia del Principe and Liscia Ruja, there’s something for every beach lover.

Several archaeological attractions exist in and around Olbia – such as an ancient Roman aqueduct.

Olbia is a vibrant city with a well-preserved historic city centre, a charming waterfront, and several archaeological attractions.

Staying in Olbia means being at the heart of pulsating Sardinian life, but also within easy reach of some of the most spectacular beaches in the Mediterranean.

It’s the perfect choice for those seeking a balanced mix of city life, gastronomy, history, and beach outings on their trip to Sardinia.

Admittedly, it’s less charming a city than, for example, the towns on the Amalfi Coast, Rome or Florence.

However, I was still quite positively surprised by Olbia.

Places to stay in Olbia

The centre of Olbia is relatively tiny, so I’ll recommend a single hotel right in the centre and then tell you about the hotel I stayed in.

Hotel Panorama in Olbia is the perfect choice to combine luxury and convenience.

It’s a 4-star hotel in the heart of Olbia, offering elegant rooms, modern facilities and impressive views over the city.

One of the biggest draws of Hotel Panorama is its location. It is within walking distance of many of Olbia’s main attractions, including the historical centre, the archaeological museum, and the city’s port.

For those seeking that little extra, the hotel also offers a wellness centre where you can pamper yourself with various treatments and a small spa bath and sauna.

And then there’s “my” hotel in Olbia, where I stayed on my last trip to Sardinia.

We chose to stay in Olbia because we wanted to stay close to many restaurants and have more city-like surroundings than smaller holiday towns with less to do.

We chose Doubletree by Hilton – both because there is a large swimming pool and because it was surprisingly cheap compared to the general cost of hotels in Sardinia (it’s not the cheapest place to go on holiday in Italy, that’s for sure).

It took no more than 10 minutes to drive in our rented car from Olbia Airport to the hotel, so it’s convenient if you’re flying to and from that airport.

Our large room had a massive terrace overlooking the hotel’s main attraction: the pool.

The pool is large, and so is the area, so even though the hotel seemed full (there were, for instance, a lot of people at breakfast), it was never a problem to get two sun loungers by the pool.

I don’t have anything bad to say about the hotel apart from breakfast being a bit boring, but that’s often the case with breakfast buffets at Italian hotels.

You should, however, be aware that the hotel is very much on its own and about a 20-minute walk into Olbia city centre.

So there are no shops or restaurants right by the hotel, so you have to walk or drive into the city centre.

Now, we rented a car on this trip to Sardinia, but there is also a bus that runs 200 meters from the hotel to the Pittulongu beach, which only takes about 10 minutes.

So, I can recommend this hotel in Olbia, but you should be aware that it takes about a 10-15 minute walk before anything “happens” city-wise.

4. Porto Cervo & Costa Smeralda – Stay by the Most Beautiful Beaches in Europe

From Olbia, we now move up to the northeastern corner of Sardinia, where you’ll find Porto Cervo, the dazzling centre of the glamorous Costa Smeralda.

Porto Cervo is a playground for the rich and famous, with its exclusive marina area and designer shops.

But it’s also a city that maintains its authentic Sardinian charm. And trust me, there’s plenty to fall in love with, regardless of your budget.

Choosing Porto Cervo as your base gives you perfect access to explore the Costa Smeralda region, known for its spectacular beaches and turquoise-blue water.

This area of Sardinia is truly famous for its beaches, and you will find a wealth of options to choose from.

Whether you’re looking for undisturbed, remote beaches like Principe and Romazzino or the more popular and lively beaches like Liscia Ruja and Cala di Volpe, the Costa Smeralda has it all.

Although the beaches are the main draw, the region has much more to offer – exploring the local nature and historical attractions and participating in the glamorous nightlife.

So, if you’re wondering where to stay in Sardinia for the best beaches and a touch of luxury, Porto Cervo and the Costa Smeralda region is a great choice.

Places to stay in Porto Cervo

Regarding hotels in Porto Cervo and throughout the Costa Smeralda area, I must be honest from the start: it is not cheap.

So if you are looking for cheap accommodation in Sardinia, you should look in one of the other areas.

On the other hand, you can stay in some fantastic hotels, so let’s take a closer look at some of the best places to stay here in one of the most beautiful parts of Sardinia.

We set out with a fantastic hotel not located in Porto Cervo but near and close to Baja Sardinia, a well-known holiday area.

7Pines Resort Sardinia represents the ultimate in luxury accommodation in Sardinia.

The resort is located in the most beautiful nature and, of course, right down to a private beach

The elegant suites and villas are equipped with state-of-the-art comforts, and several have their own private pool and terrace, where you can enjoy the view to the fullest.

5. La Maddalena – Stay on a small island with a cosy town & lovely beaches

Let me now take you on a little boat trip of about 20 minutes from Palau in Sardinia to a place that certainly has a special place in my heart, namely La Maddalena.

This enchanting little archipelago is in the turquoise Mediterranean just north of Sardinia.

The main island, also called La Maddalena, is known for its old, charming town, radiant beaches, and untouched nature.

It may not be the most obvious place to stay in Sardinia, but I had to mention it in this guide – if you don’t book a hotel here, at least consider going on a day trip over there

The island life here is a bit more relaxed, and the town of La Maddalena exudes Italian charm with its narrow, cobblestone streets, colourful houses, and lively piazzas.

If you stay on La Maddalena, you have the whole fantastic archipelago within reach. It’s a paradise for nature lovers, with countless hiking trails and places to dive and snorkel.

And let’s not forget the archipelago’s beaches – from the large, famous beaches like Spalmatore to the smaller, hidden gems like Cala Carlotto, they are all breathtakingly beautiful.

Once you arrive, you will understand why La Maddalena is one of my favourite places in Sardinia.

Staying here is a perfect choice for those who want an authentic, relaxed experience and some of Sardinia’s most spectacular landscapes.

Places to stay in La Maddalena

I understand that choosing La Maddalena is a bit special, so I’ll just mention two good hotels on the island.

We start with an excellent hotel with a pool, but only for adults.

Grand Hotel Resort Ma&Ma in La Maddalena is a good choice for a lovely hotel close to the city.

The hotel’s location is ideal for those who want to explore the island but also have a quiet and luxurious base to return to.

But it’s not just the rooms that make Ma&Ma an authentic luxury stay.

The place also houses a fantastic wellness centre with an indoor swimming pool, sauna, Turkish bath, and a wide range of beauty and massage treatments.

Here you will stay close to nature and in the absolute heart of comfort and luxury.

6. Santa Teresa di Gallura – good area for families & holidays without a car

Located at the northernmost point of Sardinia, Santa Teresa di Gallura offers a mix of cultural attractions and natural beauty.

It’s a lively little town that boasts a charming old town, a beautiful sandy beach, and a range of good restaurants serving everything from traditional Sardinian dishes to modern Italian cuisine.

When you choose to stay in Santa Teresa di Gallura, you’ll find that everything is within walking distance.

The beaches are a stone’s throw away, and the city centre has cosy cafes, ice cream bars, and shops.

The beaches are pure idyll, and the most popular is Rena Bianca, a lovely beach with fine, white sand and clear water that is perfect for swimming and snorkelling.

But it doesn’t stop here. Santa Teresa di Gallura is also an ideal starting point for various excursions.

You can take a boat trip to the beautiful Maddalena Islands (which I mentioned above) or explore the scenic landscape in the Gallura region.

A unique attraction is the opportunity to take the ferry to Corsica in France.

In just one hour, you can reach the enchanting town of Bonifacio, which sits on the edge of white limestone cliffs and is known for its historical monuments and narrow streets filled with shops and restaurants.

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Sardinia that offers convenience, fantastic beaches, a wide range of dining options, and lots of adventure at your fingertips, then Santa Teresa di Gallura is the place for you.

It’s the ideal place to experience Sardinia’s charm without needing a car.

Places to stay in Santa Teresa di Gallura

The town is one of the larger ones on the northern coast of Sardinia, so there are quite a few good hotels to choose from. Here are a couple of the best in the town and one that’s a bit outside.

We’re now leaving northern Sardinia and moving down the west coast to Bosa, a city many have dubbed one of the most beautiful cities in Sardinia.

Bosa itself is located about 3 kilometres from Bosa Marina and the beach.

You can spend hours exploring the winding streets, visiting the local market, or settling down at a café by the river to watch the world go by.

The city is also an excellent base for exploring the surrounding region.

Beautiful hikes nearby, wineries offering wine tasting, and historical places like the prehistoric Nuraghe towers.

Its white sand stretches for three kilometres, and the turquoise waters are shallow and calm, making it ideal for children to play and swim in.

Behind the beach is a lagoon where you can often spot pink flamingos, and on one side of the beach, you will find the impressive Tavolara rock rising from the sea.

San Teodoro is also home to several fantastic beaches, including Lu Impostu and Cala Brandinchi, often called “Little Tahiti” due to its crystal clear waters.

This is the perfect location for a relaxing beach holiday in Sardinia, with easy access to some of the island’s most stunning beaches.

And then there is only a 30-40 minute drive to the big city of Olbia, where you can fly to and from.

Places to Avoid in Sardinia

Choosing where not to stay in Sardinia can be just as important as deciding where to stay.

While Sardinia is a beautiful and welcoming island with many unique places to explore, some areas may not suit everyone’s travel style or expectations.

Industrial areas such as Porto Torres and Portoscuso: These towns can be convenient for travel to and from the island as they have ferry ports. But they are also the centre of heavy industry. They can’t offer the same charm and beauty as many other towns in Sardinia.

Deserted villages in the island’s inland: Many small villages in the interior of Sardinia have a rustic charm but can only be inaccessible with a car. If you don’t plan to rent a car during your stay, stay closer to the coast, where public transportation is better.

Costa Smeralda in high season if you are on a budget: This is one of Sardinia’s most famous and expensive regions, known for luxury resorts and high-end shopping. If you travel on a tight budget, choose a less touristy area.

As previously mentioned, we ended up staying in Olbia, which was not our first choice – but hotels in the smaller towns right next to the beaches were so expensive that we booked into a hotel in Olbia, rented a car and went on many excursions.

Remember that what works for one person may not necessarily work for another. Therefore, it is essential to consider what you want to get out of your holiday in Sardinia before choosing where to stay.

The Palermo Cathedral and many churches and palaces in the Arab-Norman style will make you feel like you’re stepping into another time.

Palermo is a true mecca for food lovers. The city is famous for its colourful food markets, such as Ballarò and Vucciria, where you can find everything from fresh produce to local delicacies and street food.

It’s primarily a good idea to stay in Palermo if you’re travelling to Sicily outside the high season.

I wouldn’t choose to stay in the city centre if I travelled to Sicily in July, as it can get sweltering.

You’d probably prefer to be closer to some beaches – or stay in the northern part of Palermo (in the city/district of Mondello), where you’ll find Mondello Beach, one of the most beautiful in Sicily.

To me, Palermo embodies a genuine Sicilian experience. When you stay in this fascinating city, you’ll have an unforgettable holiday combining culture, history, food, and celebration in a beautiful, vibrant atmosphere.

For me, Syracuse is the perfect place to experience Sicily’s history and beauty. When you choose to stay in this charming city, you’ll be spoiled with ancient wonders and picturesque streets.

There isn’t a beach in the city, but if you rent a car, the city is a good base for exploring the surrounding areas. For example, you can drive to Spiaggia dell’Arenella beach (Spiaggia means beach in Italian – and it’s a good word to know if you’re going around the island).

1. Centro Storico – stay in the historic centre

The historic center of Rome is located in the city center and is where to stay in Rome if it’s your first time visiting the Italian capital.

I’d suggest looking for hotels close to The Pantheon and Piazza Navona as both are places of interest in the historic center.

This indeed is the best area to stay in Rome for most tourists.

It doesn’t matter too much exactly where you stay in the historic centre.

However, Piazza Navona and the Pantheon are suitable landmarks – if you are within walking distance of these, you will be staying in the center of Rome and in walking distance of most of the best things to do in Rome.

If you choose to stay in the historic centre of Rome, you are close to everything.

The beautiful Piazzas, churches, Roman ruins, small exciting and unique shops and, of course, a wide selection of cafes and restaurants

You will also find the Spanish Steps and the Trevi Fountain in this area of Rome.

All sights that make Rome’s historic centre part of the UNESCO World Heritage List.

I recommend having a pair of good walking shoes on your packing list when you travel to Rome because the historic centre is very compact even though it is a big city.

You can, therefore, quickly get around on foot and see it all.

In addition to all the well-known things to see and do, there are plenty of free experiences in and around Rome.

When you choose to stay in the centre of Rome, the disadvantage is that the nearest metro may be some distance away depending on where you stay.

There are, however, buses and trams. At the same time, you will be within walking distance of most things here.

However, staying in the centre of Rome can be an expensive affair.

But if you are only in Rome for a few days, staying in the centre or reasonably close is recommended so that you have all the sights on your doorstep.

Places to stay in Centro Storico

There are almost always many tourists in Rome, especially in the centre. If you want to stay right in the historic centre itself, there are only a few hotels to choose from.

This also means that they get booked quickly, so it’s best to book as far in advance as possible.

Hotel Indigo Rome is a cosy hotel that is very centrally located and, among other things, has a fantastic outdoor terrace with a view and an indoor swimming pool.

This is, of course, also reflected in the price, but look at the link below and enter your travel dates – prices change, and if you travel in the “low season”, there are often good deals on hotels in Rome.

One of the advantages of this hotel is that it is only about 15 minutes walk from the Vatican and cosy Trastevere, which is the next area on the list of where to stay in Rome

The location is one of the most significant advantages, as you can walk to places like the Trevi Fountain and the Colosseum in minutes.

2. Trastevere – best area for nightlife

Trastevere is one of the oldest and most authentic neighborhoods in Rome and it’s definitely where to stay in Rome for nightlife.

Trastevere is located just across the river Tiber. This means you can stay relatively close to the centre and within walking distance of most things, but cheaper.

In this district, there are fewer tourists, and a large part of Italians themselves live here.

So if you’re looking for an authentic area to stay in on your trip to Rome, Trastevere is a great area to stay.

However, it must also be said that Trastevere has been described in guidebooks as a “slightly hidden gem” for many years, so there will also be other tourists.

But the area is still less touristy than the historic center.

If you have studied Italian for beginners, this is probably not where you should start trying it out, as a large part of the local population doesn’t speak “modern Italian” but the local Romanesque dialect.

Many students live in this area, which contributes to colourful nightlife, so staying here is also recommended if you enjoy being part of this.

If you choose to stay a little further north in the area, there are several green areas that you can also enjoy.

Among other things, here is the Botanical Garden, which contains more than 7,000 plant species from all over the world. Pull the plug and enjoy the little green oasis for a few hours if you need a break from the pulsating city life.

Do you want to see one of Rome’s oldest churches?

It is also located in this district. The Santa Maria in Trastevere dates back to the 3rd century and is said to have been founded by Pope Callixtus I.

From the Terrazza del Gianicolo, you have a beautiful panoramic view of the historic centre of Rome.

The area has many restaurants and cafes, but you have to be careful where you eat. Many places are tourist traps, but you get local and delicious food if you move away from the most touristy streets.

Researching and looking at various reviews online before eating out is also recommended.

The only real disadvantage of Trastevere is that the public transport does not cover very well here, so it is an advantage that you don’t mind moving around on foot.

However, it is easy to get here from Fiumicino Airport.

Places to stay in Trastevere

Let’s look at some of Trastevere’s best places to stay, starting with a real luxury hotel.

One of the best hotels in Trastevere is the 4-star Unahotels Trastevere Roma.

This is perhaps the hotel with the best location in the entire Trastevere area, so if you want to be sure to stay within walking distance of the area’s cosy restaurants and cafes, then you can book here.

The hotel is also suitable for families with children, as you can book family rooms that have a double bed as well as two single beds.

Sonder Trastevere is a popular apartment hotel in the northern part of the area, so you’ll stay close to central Rome and the Vatican.

Here, you’ll enjoy modern facilities, and the place stands out as one of the area’s cleanest and nicest accommodation options.

The apartments at Sonder Trastevere are equipped with complete kitchens, including all the necessary utensils for cooking, cleaning, and coffee making.

So if you’re travelling to Rome as a family wanting a bit of extra space or prefer staying somewhere different from a regular hotel room, consider Sonder Trastevere.

3. Monti – best area to stay for couples (near Colosseum)

Monti hasn’t always had the best reputation – it’s a shame as it’s a fantastic place. Monti has historically been a poor area, but today has been renewed.

This is where many wealthy foreigners and successful business people have settled. So now Monti is one of the best areas in Rome to stay in.

I stayed in the summer of 2022 in a good hotel in Monti, right by the Colosseum.

They even had a rooftop terrace with an incredible view of the Colosseum.

Monti is like a small village in the city. There are many atmospheric streets, small workshops, local butchers, and unique shops with goods you won’t find anywhere else.

You will also experience completely different prices than in all the big shops on the tourist-filled streets.

This is where you can find something that all the others don’t have.

Monti is a convenient place to stay as it is close to the main train station (Termini ), so you can quickly get around to the whole city of Rome.

It is also close to the Colosseum.

The evening atmosphere in Monti’s only Piazza, Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, is fantastic.

Here, all the locals meet and chat while enjoying a good glass of wine, and the children run around and play.

Places to stay in Monti

Let’s explore some of my favourite hotels in Monti. Let’s start off with a very luxurious hotel.

The NH Collection Roma Fori Imperiali, in Rome’s city centre on the fringes of the charming Monti area, offers a luxurious retreat amid historical grandeur.

The hotel is literally right next to the Imperial Forums, select rooms provide stunning views of ancient ruins.

Previous guests commend the attentive staff and appreciate the hotel’s modern, comfortable amenities and rich architectural beauty.

With easy access to iconic landmarks and the quaint ambience of Monti’s restaurants and bars, it’s one of the best places to stay in Rome.

The hotel’s high ratings on various platforms attest to its quality, making it a compelling choice for those seeking a blend of Rome’s historical essence and contemporary luxury.

As well as being a great place to stay, Monti is also cheap, at least compared to the centre and other popular areas.

One of Monti’s better but cheaper hotels is the Salotto Monti.

This is a 3-star hotel that scores excellent reviews from previous guests and is a great example of a budget-friendly hotel in Monti.

As previously mentioned, I recently stayed at Colosseum Corners, which is literally just around the corner from the Colosseum – a great place to stay in the Monti area of Rome.

The hotel is in an ordinary building that might not look special on the surface but contains many surprising details.

One of the most notable features of Colosseum Corners is the opportunity to go up to the building’s roof.

From here, a breathtaking view opens up directly over to the Colosseum, offering a unique feeling of being in the heart of Rome’s historical centre.

The location in the Monti area provides easy access to other attractions, restaurants, and shops, making it a convenient base for those who wish to explore the city on foot.

They don’t have a restaurant, but we were given breakfast vouchers that could be used at a café around the corner – from where you can sit outside and look directly at the Colosseum in front of the café.

4. Prati – nice area close to the Vatican

Prati might not be the obvious choice if you visit Rome for the first time.

As I said, it’s all about what kind of trip you want, but if you’ve either been to Rome before, or if you want to experience Rome, but with the opportunity to retreat from the big city’s many tourists in the evening, then Prati is an excellent area to stay in.

This is also where you should stay if you want luxurious shopping experiences, or mainly come to see the Vatican and all the sights there.

As described in the post about sights in Rome, it can take a lot of time to visit Peter’s Church, as there are many people and often long queues.

Therefore, if you really want to experience the Vatican and take it all in, then you can easily spend more than one day here.

If you are shopping, you must visit the two km. long street Via Cola di Rienzo.

The street starts at the Ponte Regina Margherita bridge and stretches to Piazza del Risorgimento, right next to the Vatican.

Places to stay in Prati

Residenza Alexander is, in more ways than one, the perfect place to stay in Prati. The hotel is modern but with a good mix of traditional elements.

Here you stay with direct access to the beautiful streets full of shopping opportunities and halfway between the Vatican and Castel Sant’Angelo.

Considering the location, you can hardly say that the price is high and also be lucky to book at a slightly lower price on dates outside the high season.

Best Western Plus Hotel Spring House in the Prati area is a superbly delightful hotel, offering comfort and convenience close to the Vatican.

The hotel’s location, just a stone’s throw from the metro station, makes it easy to get around the city, and many of Rome’s iconic sights can be reached on foot within 35 minutes if you want to walk to Centro Storico.

The Vatican is literally just around the corner, so if you want to experience the Vatican without tourists, get up early and head over to St. Peter’s Square before breakfast.

Best Western Plus Hotel Spring House is an excellent choice for those seeking a comfortable and central base in Rome.

Its combination of comfort, service, and location makes it an oasis in the city’s heart, although it might be a bit more expensive than other options.

5. Testaccio – best area for a local vibe

Testaccio is a unique district in Rome, standing out with its blend of history, culture, and vibrant everyday life.

It’s located just south of the Aventine Hill and is renowned for its lively local atmosphere, combining traditional Roman lifestyle with a touch of modern charm.

Historically, Testaccio became known as “Rome’s food bowl” due to its role in the city’s food trade.

Monte Testaccio, the district’s namesake hill, is created from broken earthenware jars for transporting olive oil and other goods.

Today, this hill is a treasure trove of archaeological evidence, providing insight into ancient Rome, so there’s plenty to do for history enthusiasts – but that’s true everywhere in Rome.

Although Testaccio was once known as a working-class neighbourhood, it has undergone significant gentrification and is now a trendy area boasting some of Rome’s best restaurants, shops, and nightlife.

Testaccio market is a must-visit spot to buy fresh produce and taste authentic Roman street food.

I recommend grabbing a sandwich from the iconic Mordi & Vai there – you won’t regret it.

The area is also known as the cradle of A.S. Roma, one of Rome’s two major football clubs (Lazio is the other), which gives it a special place in the hearts of many local football fans.

With its proximity to the historical centre of Rome and easy access to public transport, including Piramide Metro Station (named after a small pyramid called Piramide di Caio Cestio which you should also experience), Testaccio is an excellent place to stay for tourists.

While it has a more locally flavoured atmosphere than more touristy areas like Trastevere, Testaccio offers a more authentic taste of Rome.

Places to stay in Testaccio

Let me recommend a really good place to stay in Testaccio – right in the heart of the area.

Seven Suites in the Testaccio district of Rome is a charming modern Bed & Breakfast with an excellent location close to fantastic dining spots.

At first glance, the exterior of the building might seem ordinary, but inside awaits a surprising new, beautiful, and genuinely comfortable decor.

The rooms at Seven Suites are clean, nicely decorated, and spacious, with some offering balconies overlooking the peaceful inner courtyard. The bathrooms are especially highlighted as dreamy and generous.

The hotel’s guests often praise the friendly and service-minded reception staff, who do their best to meet the needs of everyone staying here.

Where not to stay in Rome

I advise against staying in some areas of the city that may not be ideal for tourists.

One such area is Termini Station, which is the main railway station in Rome. While it may be convenient for transport, the area around Termini is known for being crowded, noisy, and unsafe, especially at night.

Another area to avoid is Esquilino, which is adjacent to Termini Station and has a reputation for being rough around the edges.

While there are a couple of decent hotels in these areas, it is generally better to stay in more tourist-friendly neighborhoods such as the historic center or the areas I’ve previously mentioned in this guide.

In this guide I’ll tell you about the best things to do in Rome as well as some of the more hidden gems and unusual things to do.

If it’s a paid attraction, I’ll link to online ticket booking as Rome is an extremely popular destination and the lines for places like Colosseum and the Sixtine Chapel gets pretty crazy in the high season. My advice is to book skip-the-line tickets when possible.

With that said – let’s dive into the top things to do in Rome.

I’m going to begin with some of the main things to do as there are just some things you must see when coming to Rome.

1. Colosseum

The Colosseum is undoubtedly the top attraction in Rome – perhaps one of the world’s best-known sights in reality. So it goes without saying that most people who travel to Rome have the Colosseum on their ‘to-do’ list.

There are many tourists everywhere in Rome, so if you don’t think about it, you can end up queuing for many of the most popular tourist attractions.

However, an easy way to avoid the worst queues for the Colosseum is to buy tickets online from home. On my first trip to Rome, we bought regular Colosseum tickets online on their official website.

The tickets cost €18 and ensure that you bypass the long queue; we went straight in and only stood in line for about 1 minute for the airport-like scanners you must go through for security reasons.

The disadvantage of these tickets to the Colosseum is that you do not have ‘floor access’, which I indeed wanted on that first trip and bought when I was last in Rome again in the summer of 2022.

On my summer trip to the Amalfi Coast, we ended the trip with a few days in Rome. On this trip, we stayed in a hotel next to the Colosseum (the hotel was excellent, by the way, check it out on Booking.com here); thus, it was finally time to get the whole Colosseum experience.

This time we thus booked a guided tour of the Colosseum, where we got down under the ‘floor’ and ended up right in the middle of the Colosseum. In the actual spot that the gladiators used to fight in

I would highly recommend it to everyone travelling to Rome!

On a Colosseum tour with floor access, you get so much more out of the visit, all the good stories from the guide and you get as far into the Colosseum as possible.

We were on this tour booked via GetYourGuide.

On that tour, you meet your guide next to the Colosseum, and he then takes you inside, bypassing the queue, where you are given a headset so that you can always hear the guide on the tour.

A fantastic experience and one of my highlights in Rome.

Colosseum is jam-packed with people, especially in the ‘cheap rows’, where you have access if you buy regular tickets to the Colosseum, but there are almost no people down on the floor.

By the way, the Colosseum is as incredible an experience as you’d expect – it’s pretty crazy to walk around such a historical place, which is also highly well-preserved. A lift is installed so the disabled can get up to the upper stand.

2. Roman Forum

The Roman Forum is right next to the Colosseum, so it makes sense to visit the ancient city of Rome on the same day as you go to the Colosseum.

The ticket to the Colosseum is also valid for the Roman Forum, so it would be a shame to miss the visit to the well-preserved ruins.

If you buy a guided tour of the Colosseum, your guide will take you to the Forum and help you through security.

On my first trip to Rome, we made our way to the Roman Forum in the morning and were very impressed by how quiet it was.

It was not as overcrowded as many other places in Rome, and even though you were in the middle of the vibrant city, you could hear birds chirping.

On a later trip, I was in Rome in July, where it was almost 38 degrees celsius and walking around the Forum was a bit of a challenge…

So bring a water bottle and a sun hat if you’re coming to Rome in the summer months.

The Roman Forum is another awe-inspiring thing to see in Rome and something you must not miss on your trip to Italy.

3. The Vatican City & The Sistine Chapel

The following top thing to do in Rome is the home state of the Pope. On my first trip to Rome many years ago, I visited the Vatican Museum and was quite shocked when I saw the queue for the museum and the Sistine Chapel.

Remember to buy fast-track tickets to the Vatican Museum if you don’t want to waste several hours of your holiday standing in line.

We bought fast-track tickets and went straight in – I’m not kidding when I say the queue is several kilometres long; it’s insane.

The tickets to the Vatican also include a visit to the Sistine Chapel with the world-famous ceiling painting.

4. St Peter’s Basilica

On another trip to Rome, we just wanted to enter St Peter’s Basilica, where there is always a long queue.

I read up a bit on the cases and read in several places that if you just came early in the day (before 11 am), the queue for St. Peter’s Basilica was not particularly long.

But when we entered St. Peter’s Square at 10 o’clock on Friday morning, the queue was surprisingly long (it literally filled the whole square), so we, unfortunately, skipped it.

St. Peter’s Basilica is free to visit, but various companies arrange special “audioguide” tours, which then cost money, but on the other hand, function as fast-track tickets.

I would have bought it myself if I had known there was no point in coming early.

Even if you don’t go into the basilica, St. Peter’s Square is worth a visit.

It is an awe-inspiring sight that meets one, especially if one goes on foot down from Castel St Angelo by the river.

5. Castel Sant’Angelo

Castel Sant’Angelo was initially built way back in the year 135 by Hadrian (yes, the one who also had a wall on the border between England and Scotland named after him because the Romans could not take Scotland), and over the years, has functioned both as a prison and fortress for the Pope.

Castel Sant’Angelo is located very close to the Vatican City and St Peter’s Basilica:

So if you are in central Rome and want to experience a wonderful walk, start from the Castel Sant’Angelo and go up to the Vatican.

Nowadays, there is a museum at Castel Sant’Angelo, where buying tickets online in advance is recommended, so you skip the queue.

6. Villa Borghese

Another impressive thing to do and view of Rome is from Villa Borghese, which is ‘just’ a park on one of Rome’s seven hills.

There are several things to do in the park (including an art museum), but I can only talk about the view from Terezza del Pincio, which is outstanding.

If you are in the area, it would be a shame not to go up and see the beautiful view over Rome and the Vatican.

And from the beautiful roman park, we’re going to venture into the absolute city centre and walk through a couple of the most famous things to do in Rome.

7. The Spanish Steps

One of the most famous things to do in Rome is the Spanish Steps, which is… a staircase

There isn’t much to say about the Spanish Steps other than that they’re beautiful and world-famous and that it has been illegal to sit on them since 2019.

In other words, it is no longer possible if you had dreamed of bringing a beer and looking at the hectic life in Rome from the Spanish Steps.

On the other hand, the stairs are centrally located in Rome, so it’s easy to swing by and check off one of the most iconic sights in Rome.

8. The Trevi Fountain

Yep, a must-do thing in Rome and the fountain is indeed remarkable. If only you could see it for all those people

No, it’s beautiful, and if you go down to the water and go a little to the sides, you can (perhaps) find a quiet place to sit and enjoy the work.

The Trevi Fountain is one of the things you must experience when you travel to Rome, and with its central location, it is also difficult not to pass by the place when you walk around the streets.

But it is an attraction where you spend a relatively short time, as there are an incredible number of tourists unless you arrive early in the morning.

So if you are travelling to Rome as a photographer or are good at waking up in the morning, then it is recommended to make your way past the Trevi Fountain early in the day.

9. Pantheon

The Pantheon is a temple built approximately 120 years after the birth of Christ – another imposing historic monument in the centre of Rome.

The Pantheon is free to visit, but there can only be a certain number of guests, so there may be queues – though nothing as crazy as the Vatican, but maybe 5-10 minutes at its worst.

Note: if you travel to Rome in the summer, remember that women’s shoulders must be covered when entering the churches.

Unfortunately, my girlfriend couldn’t enter with bare shoulders, which applies to many churches in Europe.

On the corner of the square outside of the Pantheon, I recommend you try an espresso from Tazza d’Oro, an institution in Rome – known for some of the best espressos in town.

10. Piazza Navona

We find Piazza Navona near the Pantheon, a large square with (several) impressive statues and buildings.

Naturally, there are also many restaurants here, which may/may not be tourist traps.

Piazza Navona is one of those squares in central Rome that you naturally pass by.

The square may not be what I remember best from my travels in Rome, but the streets around the square are charming.

For instance, I loved getting a beer and sitting outside La Botticella of Poggi Giovanni, a craft beer bar in a charming Roman street close to Piazza Navona.

11. Campo de’ Fiori

On Saturdays, it is a good idea to visit Campo de’ Fiori, where there is a vast market. Here you can buy both the classic tourist items, but also fruit, vegetables and cheese.

For example, you can buy Parmesan cheese that is vacuum-packed so that it is easy to transport home and enjoy the delicious Italian food after your trip.

12. The Trastevere area

It’s time to explore the area often described as ‘the real Rome’. As it is often described this way, there are now a great many tourists who cross the Tiber (the river that divides Rome) and visit the Trastevere area.

Trastevere is my favourite area in Rome; here are narrow cobbled streets with cosy restaurants and small side streets where you can occasionally be lucky to be the only tourist.

So I recommend going over to the Trastevere area – possibly crossing the Tiber via Isola Tiberina – and having dinner at one of the many restaurants in the area.

It’s incredibly cosy, but it’s not the ‘unspoiled real Rome’ feel that many guidebooks tell about – here, too, it’s teeming with tourists.

13. The Victor Emanuel Monument

Right next to the Roman Forum and on the way from the centre of Rome down to the Colosseum, we find a monument that impresses the tourists but is a thorn in the side of many Romans: the Victor Emanuel Monument.

You have no doubt when you see the monument decorated with white marble and packed with lots of columns and details.

It is a feast for the eyes of many, but the Romans seem to have a point when they say that monument is not fitting in with the rest of the architecture in Rome.

The monument was opened as late as 1911 as a monument to the reunification of the Kingdom of Italy, with Victor Emanuel II as the first king.

Not-that-great or beautiful monument – it’s a beautiful building in my eyes and worth going past (if you’re not already going that way when you’re going to the Colosseum).

After I got home, I saw that you can get to the top of the building and get a panoramic view of The Roman Forum and the rest of central Rome.

14. Street Food Tour with Local Guide

You can’t say Rome (or the rest of Italy, for that matter) without mentioning food. That’s why it makes sense to go on a street food city walk with a local guide when you go to Rome.

15. Day trip to Pompeii

If you have been to Rome before or have plenty of time in the city, you can also consider taking a day trip to one of Italy’s most exciting sights – Pompeii.

As you know, Pompeii is the city just outside Naples that was destroyed in the year 79 by a catastrophic volcanic eruption from Vesuvius, which many day trips from Rome also pass by.

It’s a full-day trip, so you won’t get to see as much of Rome on the chosen day, but in return, you’ll experience one of Europe’s most exciting places.

16. Experience Rome on a Vespa

Nothing goes as well as a Vespa scooter and Rome. Everywhere in the city, you see the iconic scooters, everything from housewives with kids on the back to the businessman in a full suit.

Therefore, it also makes sense that there are so many tourist-friendly rental places with Vespas, so you can rent an Italian scooter and explore the streets of Rome.

If you don’t want to drive, you can even book a Vespa sightseeing tour, where you sit in the back and are moved around to the best sights in Rome. It is also possible to book trips as a group so that you drive together.

17. Italian cooking class in Rome

18. Eat in the best Roman restaurants (here are 3 fantastic places to try)

When travelling to Rome, the fantastic Italian food is often an essential part of the trip. To that extent, it was also for us, so much research was done for good places to eat.

Below I will mention a few places where we had delicious food in Rome.

Osteria di Fortunata (Campo de’ Fiori):

Undoubtedly, the restaurant where we had the best food in Rome. I discovered it in a Youtube video and was immediately sold; here, the pasta is made in the restaurant and tastes fantastic.

The restaurant is located just behind Campo de’ Fiori, where there are many tourists, so at first glance, you wouldn’t think that the place is such a gem – but it is.

We arrived a little after 1 pm on a Saturday and got the last table – after 10 minutes, 15-20 people were queuing outside the place, Italians, all of them, mind you. So this is an excellent restaurant where the locals also eat lunch.

La Botticella (Trastevere):

Number 1 on Yelp when searching for restaurants in Trastevere. We called them at lunchtime on Saturday and got a table that evening at 8 pm. If we didn’t call to book, there was no chance of getting a table at the tiny, family-run restaurant.

It was definitely packed with both locals and tourists.

Da Lucia (Trastevere):

Apparently, this is a well-known restaurant for quite a few Danes as it was in a famous Danish guidebook to Rome, but nonetheless, it’s a brilliant restaurant.

And they don’t serve Danish food, don’t you worry

Chiang Mai sits surrounded by mountains in northern Thailand, and the city is surprisingly compact. But where you stay makes a huge difference to your experience. The different neighbourhoods have vastly different personalities.

Best Areas to Stay in Chiang Mai

Here’s a quick overview of the best areas to stay in Chiang Mai:

• Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) – Trendy cafes, nightlife, and digital nomad hub
• Riverside – Peaceful, romantic, and luxurious by the Mae Ping River
• Santitham – Local, affordable, and perfect for longer stays

1. Old Town – Best Area for First-Time Visitors

Distance to city centre: You ARE the city centre
Transport: Songthaew (red minibus) everywhere for 30-40 THB

Old Town is the obvious choice if it’s your first time in Chiang Mai. The area is surrounded by an ancient moat and old city walls dating back to the 13th century, and behind those walls lies a network of quiet streets, hundreds of temples, and countless small cafes and restaurants. Everything can be done on foot or by bicycle – the area is only about 1.5 x 1.5 kilometres.

On Sundays, Ratchadamnoen Road transforms into the Sunday Walking Street, a massive street market with street food, crafts, and live music. It’s one of the best experiences in all of Chiang Mai.

The most important temples are located here – Wat Chedi Luang, Wat Phra Singh, and Wat Chiang Man – and you can visit all of them on a single walk. Tha Phae Gate at the eastern end is the city’s unofficial meeting point, and from there it’s a short distance to the Night Bazaar area.

Prices for hotels and food are surprisingly low compared to Bangkok or the Thai islands. The area is safe and friendly, and it’s easy to arrange trips to Doi Suthep Temple from here.

The only downside? There isn’t much nightlife in the evenings – that happens in the Nimman neighbourhood.

Places to Stay in Old Town

Rachamankha Hotel

A beautiful boutique hotel built in traditional Lanna style with teakwood, open courtyards, and an atmosphere that feels like a peaceful monastery – just with a pool and air conditioning. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk from Wat Phra Singh and Sunday Walking Street. Rooms feature high ceilings, dark woodwork, and handmade details. The restaurant serves excellent northern Thai food.

Tamarind Village

One of Chiang Mai’s most beloved hotels, built around an enormous tamarind tree that’s over 200 years old. The atmosphere is calm and beautiful – almost like an oasis in the middle of the city. The pool is surrounded by tropical plants, the breakfast is fantastic, and the staff organise daily activities like bamboo weaving and umbrella painting. Sunday Walking Street literally takes place right outside the hotel’s door. Score on Booking.com: 9.0.

POR Thapae Gate

If you want to stay centrally in Old Town without spending a fortune, POR Thapae Gate is a really solid pick. The hotel has a nice outdoor pool, free bicycles for guests, air conditioning, and free WiFi. The location is hard to beat – you’re literally at Tha Phae Gate, just minutes from the temples and markets. The breakfast with fresh fruit and coffee is a lovely bonus at this price.

2. Nimmanhaemin (Nimman) – Best Area for Nightlife and Cafes

Nimman is Chiang Mai’s hip neighbourhood – think Shoreditch in London, but with cheaper coffee and better weather. The area stretches along Nimmanhaemin Road and the side streets (sois), and it’s bursting with trendy cafes, cocktail bars, boutique shops, and international restaurants.

Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center is located here, and One Nimman is a cosy outdoor shopping complex in a European style. The proximity to Chiang Mai University gives the area a young and energetic vibe, especially in the evenings.

It’s the preferred neighbourhood for digital nomads and expats. Here you’ll find coworking spaces, western comfort food alongside fantastic Thai food, and a nightlife scene ranging from rooftop bars to nightclubs. Warmup Cafe is legendary for live music, and Rise Rooftop Bar at Akyra Manor has one of the city’s best views.

The downside is that you’ll need transport to get to Old Town and the temples – but a Grab taxi takes only 10 minutes and costs next to nothing. If you’re planning a longer stay or you’re under 40 and want to have fun in the evenings, Nimman is your neighbourhood.

Places to Stay in Nimman

Akyra Manor Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai’s most stylish boutique hotel. Akyra Manor is a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and sits on Nimman Soi 9, also known as “coffee street”. All 30 suites are enormous (60-100 m²) with designer furniture, private jacuzzi, and espresso machine. Rise Rooftop Bar on the 8th floor has 360-degree panoramic views over the city and mountains. The Italian restaurant Italics is one of Chiang Mai’s finest.

The Riverside area along the Mae Ping River is Chiang Mai’s most peaceful and romantic neighbourhood. Here you’ll find some of the city’s finest hotels and resorts, many with direct river views and private gardens. The atmosphere is relaxed and sophisticated – a welcome break from the bustle of Old Town and Nimman.

In the evenings, the riverbank lights up with cosy restaurants and cocktail bars, and a sunset river cruise is one of the most beautiful experiences in the city.

The area is ideal for couples on a romantic holiday, older travellers who prefer peace and quiet, and anyone who wants a luxurious base. You’re still close to everything – Night Bazaar is within walking distance, and Old Town is 5-10 minutes away by Grab.

Warorot Market, Chiang Mai’s local market (far more authentic than Night Bazaar), is also in this area. The downside is that you’re dependent on transport to get around, and prices are generally higher than elsewhere in the city. In return, you get a quality that’s hard to match.

Places to Stay at Riverside

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort

Chiang Mai’s most famous luxury resort, built on the grounds of the former British consulate directly on the Mae Ping River. Designed by the legendary architect Kerry Hill. Rooms are minimalist yet luxurious with private terraces and views over the river or garden. Breakfast at Bodhi Terrace overlooking the river is magical. The spa has ten treatment rooms, and cooking classes with the hotel’s chefs are a popular experience. Score on Booking.com: 9.0.

Santitham is Chiang Mai’s best-kept secret. The neighbourhood sits just north of Old Town and west of Nimman, but it has an entirely different vibe. Local Thai families live here, and the streets are full of street food stalls, local markets, and small cafes that aren’t designed for tourists.

It’s Chiang Mai as it looked before Nimman got hipsterified. Prices are significantly lower than in the other neighbourhoods – both for food and accommodation.

For digital nomads and expats on a tighter budget, Santitham is a brilliant alternative to Nimman. You get a more authentic experience of northern Thai everyday life, and you’re still only 5-10 minutes from everything.

Chang Puak Gate, the entrance to Old Town from the north, is within walking distance, and here you’ll also find the famous Chang Puak Night Market with some of Chiang Mai’s best street food – try the khao kha moo (stewed pork leg) from the famous Michelin-recognised stall.

The downside is a limited selection of hotels compared to the other neighbourhoods, and you’re a bit further away from the main attractions.

Where Not to Stay in Chiang Mai?

Chiang Mai is generally a safe and friendly city, but there are a couple of things you should know. Avoid staying too far out of the centre – areas like Chang Phueak (north) or Hang Dong (south) may look cheap, but you’ll end up spending money and time on transport that eats into your savings.

The area along the busy superhighway (ring road) isn’t particularly pleasant to stay near either – there’s noise, traffic, and nothing walkable. If you spot a hotel at a suspiciously low price far from the moat, think twice.

You’ll have a much better experience staying in one of the four areas above, even if it means a slightly pricier room. Chiang Mai is still cheap compared to most of Europe, so don’t scrimp on the wrong things.

• Remember that Chiang Mai is a compact city. No matter where you stay, you’re never more than 15-20 minutes from everything by Grab or songthaew. So pick the area that suits your style, and enjoy Thailand’s most beautiful city.
• The best time to visit is November to February, when the weather is cool and dry. Avoid March-April, when smoke from regional burning can make the air quality poor.

And no matter when you travel – remember to book your hotels well in advance, especially during peak season and around the Loy Krathong festival in November.

Here are my best picks for things to do and see in Istanbul – both the big well-known attractions and some lesser-known experiences.

1. Hagia Sophia

Hagia Sophia is Istanbul’s absolute top attraction, and for good reason. The building is nearly 1,500 years old and has been a Christian cathedral, a mosque and a museum. Today it functions as a mosque again, but tourists can still visit – you get access to the 2nd floor, where you can see the impressive Byzantine mosaics and the enormous dome from above.

Entry costs €25 (or 850 TL) for tourists. Opening hours are daily from 9:00-19:30, but on Fridays it’s closed to tourists from 12:30 to 14:30 due to Friday prayers. You must have covered shoulders and knees, and women must wear a headscarf. If you haven’t brought one, you can buy one cheaply at the entrance.

My advice: buy tickets in advance. The queue at the ticket office can be over an hour in high season. You can buy skip-the-line tickets to Hagia Sophia here. Come early in the morning – at 9 – and you’ll have the place almost to yourself.

2. The Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque)

The Blue Mosque sits right opposite Hagia Sophia and is free to visit. It’s called “the Blue” because of the over 20,000 hand-painted blue tiles covering the interior. It really is impressive to see, and it won’t cost you a penny.

The mosque is open daily from 9:00-17:00, but closes during the five daily prayer times (typically 20-30 minutes each). Fridays it’s closed in the morning for tourists. As with Hagia Sophia, you’re required to cover your shoulders and knees, and women must wear a headscarf. There are free loaner headscarves at the entrance.

Tip: head here first thing in the morning, right when it opens. Later in the day the queue is long, and it can feel a bit like standing in a human cattle run. Do visit the mosque’s official website for current opening hours.

3. Topkapi Palace

Topkapi Palace was the sultans’ home for nearly 400 years, and it’s a massive complex with courtyards, pavilions, a treasury and the famous harem. You can easily spend half a day here, and it’s worth it. The treasury alone – with the 86-carat Kasikci Diamond – is quite something.

Entry costs 2,400 TL (approximately €55), and that includes the palace, the harem and the Hagia Irene Church. Open daily from 9:00-17:00, closed on Tuesdays. The ticket office closes one hour before.

Topkapi is one of the most expensive attractions in Istanbul, and prices have risen significantly in recent years. But it’s still one of the most impressive sights in the city. You can save time with a combo ticket for Topkapi, Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern.

4. Basilica Cistern

Beneath the streets of Sultanahmet lies one of Istanbul’s most atmospheric sights. The Basilica Cistern is an underground water reservoir from the 6th century with 336 marble columns, dramatic lighting and an ambience that feels like something from a film. Right down in the corner you’ll find the two famous Medusa heads – nobody knows exactly why they’re there.

Entry costs 1,500 TL during the day and 2,400 TL for evening visits. Open daily from 9:00-18:00. The cistern is relatively small, and you’ll be through in 30-45 minutes, but it’s an experience you won’t forget.

• Tip: if you can, go in the evening. There are far fewer people, and the lighting is even more atmospheric. Note that there are 50 steps down – and back up again – and no lift.

5. Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

The Grand Bazaar is one of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets with over 4,000 shops spread across 61 covered streets. It’s chaotic, colourful and overwhelming – in the best way. Here you’ll find everything from handmade ceramic bowls and Turkish lamps to leather, scarves, carpets and spices.

The market is open Monday-Saturday from 9:00-19:00 and closed on Sundays. Entry is free. Remember: the price is not the price here. Bargaining is part of the culture, and you should never pay the first price a seller mentions. Start by offering half and negotiate from there.

The Grand Bazaar is an experience in itself, but it’s not the place to buy souvenirs if you want the best price. The small shops in the side streets outside the bazaar are often cheaper. More info on the Grand Bazaar’s official site.

6. Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı)

The Spice Bazaar in Eminönü is smaller and more manageable than the Grand Bazaar, but just as colourful. It smells of cinnamon, saffron, Turkish pepper and rose petals. It’s the perfect place to buy spices, Turkish tea, lokum (Turkish delight) and dried fruit to take home.

The bazaar is open daily from 8:00-19:30 and is free to enter. My recommendation: buy your spices here instead of at the Grand Bazaar. The quality is the same, and the prices are often a bit better because it’s primarily locals who shop here.

Just outside the bazaar, along the harbour at Eminönü, you’ll find street stalls with freshly squeezed pomegranate juice and balik ekmek (fish sandwich from a boat). Both are compulsory tastings.

7. Bosphorus Cruise

A boat trip on the Bosphorus strait is one of the best things you can do in Istanbul. You literally sail between Europe and Asia, and from the water you see Dolmabahçe Palace, Galata Tower, Ortaköy Mosque and the two great bridges from a completely different angle. It’s the kind of experience that makes you understand why Istanbul is so special.

There are two options: the cheap public ferries that sail up and down the strait (from Eminönü, approximately 100-200 TL), or organised tours with a guide and refreshments. The public ferries are fine, but a guided tour gives more context.

Tip: take an evening trip if you can. Istanbul at sunset seen from the water is hard to beat.

8. Galata Tower

Galata Tower is 67 metres tall, dates from 1348 and gives you a 360-degree view over Istanbul. From here you can see Hagia Sophia, the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the entire historic peninsula. It’s the best view in the city, full stop.

Entry costs 650 TL. Open daily from 8:30-23:00, closed on Fridays. The queue can be long, so come either early or late – midday is the worst. You can tap your credit card at the entrance, so you don’t need to buy tickets in advance.

The neighbourhood around the tower – Karaköy and Galata – is an experience in itself. Here you’ll find hip coffee bars, vintage shops and street art. Walk down Galip Dede Caddesi after your visit and soak up the atmosphere.

9. Dolmabahçe Palace

If Topkapi is the traditional Ottoman palace, Dolmabahçe is the European-inspired luxury version. It was built in the mid-1800s and is filled with crystal chandeliers (the largest weighs 4.5 tonnes), gold-plated ceilings and hand-woven carpets. It’s also where Atatürk – Turkey’s founder – died in 1938.

Entry costs 1,800 TL for a combined ticket for the main building, the harem and the palace gardens. Open from 9:00-17:00, closed on Mondays. Photography is forbidden inside the palace, but you’re welcome to take photos in the garden and by the waterfront.

Dolmabahçe is located by the Bosphorus, slightly north of Sultanahmet. Take the tram to Kabataş station, and you’re there in two minutes. More information can be found on the National Palaces website.

10. Istiklal Avenue and Taksim

Istiklal Caddesi is Istanbul’s most famous pedestrian street – a 1.4 km long boulevard connecting Taksim Square with the Galata area. It’s packed with shops, restaurants, bars, cinemas and street food vendors. The nostalgic red tram moves slowly through the crowds and has become an icon of the city.

It’s free to walk here (of course), and the street is lively from morning until late evening. Taksim Square at one end is the centre of modern Istanbul, and from here you can take the metro to the rest of the city.

My recommendation: walk down Istiklal in the evening when the lights are on and the atmosphere is at its best. Take a side street to the right and you’ll find Çiçek Pasajı (the Flower Passage) – a beautiful covered arcade with restaurants and live music. It’s touristy, but still good fun.

11. Kadıköy and the Asian Side

Most tourists stay on the European side, and that’s a mistake. Kadıköy on the Asian side is Istanbul’s local heart – there are fewer tourists, better prices and a more relaxed atmosphere. Take the ferry from Eminönü or Karaköy (approximately 15 minutes, under 20 TL), and you land right in a lively neighbourhood with food markets, vinyl shops and street art.

Walk through the Kadıköy market, where locals trade fish, cheese, olives and fresh fruit. Try a midye dolma (stuffed mussels) from one of the street stalls – it’s one of Istanbul’s iconic street food snacks. Then take a walk along the Moda waterfront, where you get a completely different view of the city.

Kadıköy is also perfect for an evening out. The bar scene here is more local and relaxed than in Taksim. If you want to experience Istanbul from a local perspective, this is where you should go.

12. Turkish Breakfast

This isn’t a sight in the traditional sense, but an experience you absolutely must not miss. Turkish breakfast is a whole event – a table filled with olives, cheeses, tomatoes, cucumber, honey, kaymak (Turkish clotted cream), eggs in various styles, sucuk (spiced sausage), freshly baked bread and endless tea.

The best places to try it are in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood or in Kadıköy on the Asian side. Expect to spend 200-400 TL per person depending on the venue. It’s worth every penny – you won’t need lunch afterwards.

Tip: ask for “serpme kahvaltı” (spread breakfast) – that’s the traditional version with many small dishes. Many locals eat Turkish breakfast as a weekend ritual, so it’s also a good opportunity to mingle with the city’s residents.

13. Süleymaniye Mosque

If you only visit one mosque besides Hagia Sophia, make it Süleymaniye. It was designed by the famous architect Sinan in the 1550s and is, in my opinion, more beautiful than the Blue Mosque – and with far fewer tourists. From the courtyard you have a panoramic view over the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus.

The mosque is free to visit and open daily, but closes during prayer times. The dress code is the same as other mosques: cover shoulders, knees and hair. There are free loaner headscarves at the entrance.

In the garden behind the mosque you’ll find the tombs of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent and his wife Hürrem Sultan (Roxelana). Have a tea at one of the small tea gardens on the terrace behind – the view is absolutely fantastic, and a tea costs under 50 TL.

14. Fener and Balat

Fener and Balat are two neighbourhoods along the Golden Horn that in recent years have become Instagram’s favourite spot in Istanbul. The colourful houses, old Greek Orthodox churches and narrow streets give a completely different feel from busy Sultanahmet. It’s charming, it’s photogenic, and it feels like stepping into a different Istanbul.

You can get here by bus from Eminönü (line 99 or 44B), or you can walk along the Golden Horn from Karaköy – it takes approximately 30 minutes and is a lovely walk. Visit the Ecumenical Patriarchate (the headquarters of the Orthodox Church) and the red Iron Church (Sveti Stefan). Both are free.

A word of caution: Fener and Balat are popular, but it’s still a residential neighbourhood. Show respect for the locals and avoid taking photos directly into people’s windows. While you’re in the area, you can also pop into the Chora Church (Kariye), which has some of the most impressive Byzantine mosaics in the world.

15. Street Food Tour on Your Own

Istanbul is one of the world’s best cities for street food, and you can put together your own street food tour without paying for a guided experience. Start at Eminönü harbour with a balik ekmek (fish sandwich) from the boats. Continue to the Spice Bazaar for lokum and nuts. Cross to Kadıköy for midye dolma (stuffed mussels) and kokoreç (spiced offal in bread – tastier than it sounds).

Other things you should try: simit (sesame bread from a street cart, 10-20 TL), kestane kebab (grilled chestnuts in winter), tantuni (a type of wrap from southern Turkey), and of course Turkish ice cream from one of the playful ice cream sellers in Sultanahmet.

For dessert: find a baklava spot in Karaköy or Sultanahmet. Karaköy Güllüoğlu is a classic choice with baklava that’s crisp, sweet and buttery in exactly the right way. Expect 100-200 TL for a portion.

16. Princes’ Islands

If you have an extra day in Istanbul, take the ferry to the Princes’ Islands (Adalar). It’s a cluster of nine islands in the Sea of Marmara where there are no cars. The silence is almost surreal after Istanbul’s chaos. The most popular island is Büyükada, where you can hire a bicycle, take a walk along the coast or simply enjoy the peace with a cup of tea.

The ferry goes from Kabataş or Eminönü and takes 1.5-2 hours. A return ticket costs around 100-200 TL. There are departures several times a day. Avoid weekends in high season – the islands are packed with locals on day trips.

Tip: pack a lunch or eat fish at one of the small restaurants by the harbour on Büyükada. It’s a perfect break from the big city, and one of those experiences I’d recommend to everyone who has more than 3 days in Istanbul.

17. Turkish Bath (Hamam)

A visit to a traditional Turkish hamam is one of the most authentic experiences you can have in Istanbul. You lie on a heated marble slab, get scrubbed from head to toe by an attendant, and afterwards you feel cleaner than you ever have. It’s relaxing, it’s a bit embarrassing the first time, and it’s absolutely fantastic.

The two most famous hamams are Çemberlitaş Hamamı (from 1584, right by the Grand Bazaar) and Ayasofya Hürrem Sultan Hamamı (from 1557, between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque). Prices vary from 500-2,000 TL depending on the package and venue. The Ayasofya hamam is the most expensive but also the most impressive.

Tip: book in advance, especially in high season. And take it easy – you’re meant to relax. Most hamams have separate sections for men and women.

My Top Tips for Istanbul

Transport: Istanbul has a good metro, tram and ferry network. Buy an Istanbulkart (travel card) from a machine at the nearest metro station – it costs 50 TL and works on all public transport. You can also tap contactless with Visa/Mastercard.

Money: Turkish lira (TL) is the local currency, and exchange rates fluctuate a lot. Many tourist spots show prices in euros, but you’ll typically get a better deal if you pay in lira. Withdraw cash from a bank ATM (Garanti BBVA or İşbank are good), and avoid the exchange offices on Istiklal – they charge sky-high fees.

Safety: Istanbul is generally a safe city for tourists, but pickpockets operate in Sultanahmet, at the Grand Bazaar and on the busy metro. Keep an eye on your belongings. Also watch out for the “friendly stranger” trap: if a random man invites you for a drink in Taksim, politely decline. It typically ends with a bill for several thousand lira.

Accommodation: Sultanahmet is the obvious choice if you want to stay close to the historic sights. Karaköy and Galata are good alternatives with a more modern vibe. You can see hotels in Sultanahmet here and hotels in Karaköy here.

Number of days: You’ll need a minimum of 3-4 days to cover the most important sights. If you have 5-6 days, you can fit in the Princes’ Islands, the Asian side and a couple of the lesser-known neighbourhoods. Istanbul is the kind of city where you always find something new, no matter how many times you’ve been.

1. Old Town (Vecrīga) – Best Area for First-Time Visitors

The Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the most obvious place to stay if it’s your first trip to Riga. You literally step out of the hotel and find yourself in the middle of narrow cobblestone streets with Gothic church towers, medieval merchant houses and Baroque buildings in every direction.

This is where you’ll find the big highlights: the House of the Blackheads with its wildly detailed facade, the Riga Cathedral with its famous organ, and St. Peter’s Church where you can take the lift up the tower and get a view over the entire city that’s worth every penny.

You can see the best hotels in the Old Town and compare prices – you’ll be surprised at how cheap it is, even for the nice places.

In the evening the Old Town completely changes character. The facades light up, jazz music pours out from the bars, and the scent from the basement restaurants is almost impossible to resist. Set aside time for the Central Market on the edge of the Old Town – five converted Zeppelin hangars with fresh fish, local cheese and Latvian specialities.

The downside is that it’s the most expensive area, and during the daytime it can feel a bit touristy. But it’s still cheap by Western European standards, and you’re paying to be right in the middle of everything. Think Nyhavn in Copenhagen, just with more medieval character, fewer tourists and much cheaper beer.

Grand Palace Hotel

Riga’s finest hotel and a member of The Leading Hotels of the World, located in the heart of the Old Town just 100 metres from the castle. Only 56 rooms, so it feels intimate and personal. The building dates from 1877, but everything has been updated with modern comfort. Breakfast in the Orangery with its glass roof is an experience in itself. It’s the splurge choice, and in Riga you can actually afford it.

If I had to recommend one area for most travellers, it would be the City Centre. This is where modern Riga connects the Old Town with the rest of the city, and you get the best combination of location, price and atmosphere.

In the City Centre you’ll find the Freedom Monument, the beautiful Bastejkalns Park with romantic canals, and Riga’s impressive opera house.

The area is packed with restaurants, cocktail bars and cafes, and the atmosphere is a good mix of local everyday life and tourist-friendly energy.

You walk to the Old Town in 5-10 minutes. The train station and bus terminal are right nearby, so you can easily take a day trip to the seaside town of Jūrmala. And hotel prices are generally lower than in the Old Town itself. If you want to see the best hotels in the City Centre, you’ll find plenty of good options at reasonable prices. You don’t lose anything by staying here.

You simply get more for your money.

It’s a bit like staying by the Main Square in Krakow – central, accessible and lively, but without paying the Old Town premium.

Places to Stay in the City Centre

Grand Hotel Kempinski Riga

Luxury with a capital L. Spa with indoor pool, fitness, several restaurants and a location that gives you everything within walking distance. Rooms are large and elegantly decorated, and the breakfast buffet is some of the best in the city. Try checking what a comparable five-star hotel costs in Paris or London. You’ll have a good laugh at the price in Riga.

Āgenskalns sits on the other side of the Daugava River, and this is where you’ll find the Riga that tourists rarely see. The neighbourhood is famous for its hundreds of preserved wooden houses from the 19th century, and the atmosphere feels more like a cosy village than a capital city.

Local cafes, vintage shops and a bohemian atmosphere that has something of a Berlin-Kreuzberg feel about it.

From Āgenskalns you can walk over the bridge to the Old Town in 15-20 minutes, or hop on the tram. The view across the river towards the Old Town is fantastic, particularly in the evening light. The Āgenskalns Market has been recently renovated and is a hit with local food lovers.

If you want to see the best hotels in the Āgenskalns area, the selection is more limited than in the other neighbourhoods, but prices are significantly lower in return.

This isn’t the most practical place to stay, and there are fewer hotels than in the other areas. But if you’re a budget traveller, have a car, or simply want to experience a more local side of Riga, it’s definitely worth considering. Kipsala island nearby gives you a panoramic view over the Old Town and easy access to the bridge.

Winter has its own charm out here with snow-covered wooden houses and local basement restaurants.

Places to Stay in the Āgenskalns Area

Riga Islande Hotel

Modern hotel on Kipsala island with one of the best views in all of Riga – out over the Daugava River with the Old Town as a backdrop. Restaurant, bar, fitness and even a bowling alley. 205 rooms, most with river views, a generous breakfast buffet and free parking. You’re 10 minutes from the Old Town but feel a world away from the tourists.

Located by the riverbank with views over the Daugava and easy access to both the Old Town and Āgenskalns via the bridge. Spa with pool, sauna and steam room, comfortable rooms and a solid breakfast. A good mid-range choice if you want to be close to the water and have the best of both sides of the river. Good value for money.

Bellevue Park Hotel Riga

Good budget choice by Victory Park with free parking, spa and a decent breakfast. The location is a bit more peripheral, but the tram stops right outside the door and takes you to the centre in a few minutes. If you’re arriving by car or simply want the most hotel for the least money, it’s a solid choice with surprisingly good facilities.

Guests particularly love: “Great value for money. Clean rooms, nice spa area and the tram stop right outside takes you to old town in minutes.”

Where Not To Stay in Riga

Riga is generally a safe city, but a couple of things are worth mentioning. The area directly around the Central Station can feel a bit sketchy late at night. It’s fine during the daytime, but choose a hotel a few streets away.

You’ll have a better experience staying in the City Centre or the Old Town.

The Moscow Quarter (Maskavas Forštate) on the other side of the Central Market has a raw and exciting multiculture, but it’s not the most tourist-friendly area. Most people will feel more comfortable in one of the areas above.

Better to book in the City Centre, which gives you easy access to the market without staying right in the middle of it.

Riga is one of Europe’s most underrated cities. Medieval history, fantastic art nouveau architecture, great food and surprisingly good nightlife, all at prices that are a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe.

If you like that kind of destination, Budapest is also an obvious choice with the same combination of history, architecture and cheap, good food.

I’ve tried the various options myself and give you the full overview here so you can choose what suits you best.

1. Metro (M11 Line) – The Cheapest and Often Fastest Option

The metro is my clear recommendation for most travellers. The M11 line runs directly from Istanbul Airport to Gayrettepe Station, and the journey takes only around 30 minutes.

You completely avoid Istanbul’s notorious traffic, and the price is ridiculously low compared to all other options.

How to Do It

When you come out of the arrivals hall, follow the red metro signs. The station is right by Exit 11, in front of the car park – approximately 300 metres from the terminal. That sounds close, but there are quite a few escalators and corridors to get through, so allow 10 minutes from leaving the baggage belt to standing on the platform.

Take M11 towards Gayrettepe. From here you change to the M2 line. The changeover takes around 10-15 minutes, as you need to go up escalators and through corridors. Remember to scan your Istanbulkart again when changing – in Istanbul you pay per mode of transport, not per distance.

Destinations from Gayrettepe

To Taksim: Take M2 towards Yenikapı and get off at Taksim Station. Total journey time from the airport: approximately 45-60 minutes.

To Sultanahmet (Old Town): Take M2 towards Yenikapı and get off at Vezneciler Station. From here it’s a 10-15 minute walk to Sultanahmet Square, Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque.

To Kadıköy (the Asian side): Take M2 to Yenikapı, change to the Marmaray line under the Bosphorus to Ayrılık Çeşmesi, and take M4 to Kadıköy. It sounds complicated, but everything is signposted, and Google Maps shows you exactly which trains to take.

Tickets and Istanbulkart

You need an Istanbulkart to ride the metro. The card costs approximately 150-165 TL (prices change regularly in Turkey due to inflation) and can be bought from the yellow/blue machines (“Biletmatik“) at the metro station in the airport. The machines accept both cash and credit cards.

IMPORTANT: Do NOT buy the card called “PTT card” – it only works on the M11 line and nowhere else. Make sure the machine is offering a genuine Istanbulkart. It’s easy to pick up the wrong one.

Load at least 100 TL onto the card on top of the card price itself. A journey from the airport to Gayrettepe costs approximately 35 TL, and you’ll need the card for the rest of the city for the metro, tram, bus and ferries. I’d put 300-500 TL on the card straight away – that’ll cover you for the first few days.

Practical Information

• Opening hours: The metro runs from 06:00 to midnight. If you land after midnight, you’ll need to choose a different option.
• Frequency: Trains every 8-10 minutes during rush hour, every 15-20 minutes outside rush hour.
• Price: Approximately 35 TL per trip with Istanbulkart (prices as of early 2025).
• Luggage: There are no luggage racks, but space for suitcases by the seats. Keep your belongings close to you.

2. Havaist – The Airport Bus That Runs Directly to the Tourist Areas

Havaist is Istanbul’s official airport bus, operated by Istanbul Municipality. It’s an excellent alternative to the metro, especially if you have a lot of luggage, are travelling with family, or land late in the evening. The buses are modern, comfortable and have USB charging and Wi-Fi.

And they run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Most Important Routes for Tourists

HVL-9: Istanbul Airport → Taksim

The most popular route for tourists. The bus runs via Beşiktaş and stops at Taksim Square. Journey time: approximately 60-90 minutes depending on traffic. Departures approximately every 30-40 minutes.

HVL-11: Istanbul Airport → Sultanahmet

Runs directly to Sultanahmet via Eminönü. Perfect if you’re staying in the Old Town near Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Journey time: approximately 80-100 minutes. Departures approximately every 45-60 minutes.

HVL-5: Istanbul Airport → Beşiktaş

Good if you’re staying near the Bosphorus waterfront or need to continue by ferry to the Asian side.

Ticket Price and Payment

A ticket to Taksim or Sultanahmet costs approximately 275 TL (approximately €5-6, prices as of mid-2025). Prices change frequently in Turkey, so always check the updated price on the Havaist official website before departure.

You can pay by credit card directly on the bus, via QR code in the Havaist app, or with cash at the sales stands in the airport. Istanbulkart is also accepted as a payment method.

How to Find the Buses

From the arrivals hall, take the lift down to level -2 (the transport level). Here there are large signs and maps showing which platform your bus departs from. The Havaist buses stop at the white platforms. Find the number for your route (e.g. Platform 9 for the Taksim route) and join the queue.

• The buses can fill up quickly, so be prepared to wait for the next departure during busy periods.

Every seat is reserved, and there’s space for two pieces of luggage per passenger in the luggage hold under the bus.

3. Taxi – Door to Door, But Keep an Eye on the Meter

A taxi is naturally the easiest option. A driver takes you directly to the hotel, you don’t need to think about changes and routes, and it works around the clock. But there are a few things you should know before jumping into a Turkish taxi.

Prices

A trip from Istanbul Airport to Taksim/Beyoğlu typically costs 1,000-1,500 TL (approximately €25-35). To Sultanahmet you can expect 1,200-1,800 TL. Prices depend on the traffic, and it can be brutal in Istanbul. During rush hour, a trip to the centre can easily take over an hour, and the meter keeps ticking the entire way.

There are three types of taxis in Istanbul:

• Yellow taxis (C-type): The cheapest and most common. These are the ones you should choose.
• Turquoise taxis (D-type): Slightly larger and more expensive – approximately 15% more than the yellow ones.
• Black taxis (E-type): The luxury class. Significantly more expensive.

Important Advice

ALWAYS take a taxi from the official taxi ranks just outside the terminal. There are signs with “Taksi” everywhere – you can’t go wrong. Say no to people who offer you a ride inside the terminal. These are almost always unofficial drivers who overcharge.

Make sure the driver turns on the meter. It’s required by law, and if he won’t, get out and take the next taxi. Do use the app BiTaksi (Turkey’s equivalent of Uber) – it shows you the price in advance and ensures everything goes through the app. Uber also works in Istanbul, but BiTaksi has more drivers.

Bridge tolls (road charges) are added on top of the price, and the driver can’t do anything about that.

4. Private Transfer – Most Convenient, Especially for Families and Groups

If you’re travelling with family, have lots of luggage, or simply want the most stress-free start to your holiday, a pre-booked private transfer is a good choice. A driver will be waiting in the arrivals hall with your name on a sign, carry your suitcases and drive you straight to the hotel.

Prices and Booking

A standard private car typically costs 1,200-1,600 TL (approximately €30-40) for up to 3-4 passengers. It’s more expensive than Havaist, but the price is fixed – no surprises with traffic and meters. And if there are 3-4 of you, it’s actually not much more expensive than the Havaist bus per person.

You can book a transfer via GetYourGuide or directly through your hotel. Many hotels in Istanbul offer transfers at similar prices.

5. IETT City Buses – Cheapest but Most Inconvenient

Istanbul also has regular city buses (IETT) from the airport. They cost only approximately 27 TL with Istanbulkart, but I don’t recommend them for tourists. The routes are indirect, you need to change bus at least once, and the journey to the centre can take 2 hours or more. With the metro or Havaist you’ll get there faster and far more comfortably.

If you still want to try: the IETT buses depart from the same transport level (-2) as Havaist. Route 144H to Zeytinburnu is one option, from where you can change to Tram T1 towards Sultanahmet. But honestly – save yourself the hassle and take the metro.

Which Should You Choose? My Recommendation

Let me make it easy for you:

Best for most people: The metro (M11). It’s cheap, fast and unaffected by traffic. If you’re travelling light and don’t mind a single line change, it’s the obvious choice. I’ve written a full guide on things to do in Istanbul that you can use to plan the rest of your trip.

Best with lots of luggage or small children: The Havaist bus. You sit comfortably, the luggage goes in the hold, and you’re driven directly to Taksim or Sultanahmet. Perfect if you can’t be bothered dragging suitcases up and down escalators.

Best for groups of 3-4: A private transfer. The price per person is almost the same as Havaist, but you’re picked up in the terminal and driven directly to the hotel.

Best at night (after midnight): The Havaist bus runs 24/7. Alternatively a taxi – the metro only runs until midnight.

And taxis? They work fine, but you pay quite a bit more and risk sitting in traffic for ages. Only use one if you land at a convenient time and want door-to-door service without booking in advance.

My Best Travel Tips for Istanbul Airport

Buy an Istanbulkart straight away. No matter what transport you choose from the airport, you’ll need an Istanbulkart to get around Istanbul. Metro, tram, bus, ferry – everything requires the card. Buy it on arrival and top it up with 300-500 TL. One card can be used by up to 5 people – just scan multiple times at the entrance.

Download offline maps. Istanbul is a huge city, and it’s nice to have Google Maps ready offline. Download the Istanbul map before you travel so you can always find your way – even without data. For general trip planning, Turkey’s official tourism portal is a good place to start.

Turkish lira. You can pay by credit card in most places, but it’s smart to have a bit of cash for Istanbulkart machines and small purchases. There are exchange offices and ATMs at the airport, but the rates are better in the city. Just withdraw a small amount at the airport for the first transport.

Traffic in Istanbul is no joke. Rush hour (approximately 7-10 and 16-19) can double your journey time by bus or taxi. Plan accordingly, or choose the metro which is completely independent of traffic.

• One important thing many people overlook: the weather in Mauritius varies significantly from coast to coast. During the winter months (June-September) the southeast coast can be windy and overcast, while the north coast is still bathed in sunshine. It’s a detail that can make or break your holiday.

Grand Baie on the north coast is the obvious choice for first-time visitors to Mauritius. This lively coastal town has everything: beautiful beaches, good shopping (both local markets and shopping centres), a varied restaurant scene and Mauritius’ best nightlife.

Here you’ll find everything from local rum bars to elegant beach bars, and the atmosphere is relaxed but social.

The beaches in and around Grand Baie vary in quality. The Grand Baie bay itself is more for boat trips than swimming, but La Cuvette Beach (10 minutes’ walk) is a little gem with clear water and white sand. Pereybere and Mont Choisy beach are also within a short drive and are fantastic.

Grand Baie is also the starting point for popular boat trips to Île aux Cerfs and the northern islands.

Best for: First-time visitors, couples, solo travellers, those who want buzz and options.

Flic en Flac is Mauritius’ most popular beach destination on the west coast and a fantastic choice for families. The long white sand beach is protected by coral reef, creating calm, shallow water – perfect for children.

The west coast is also the sunniest part of the island all year round, and the sunsets here are nothing short of spectacular.

The town has a good mix of resorts, local restaurants and supermarkets without feeling too touristy. Here you can eat fantastic Creole street food by the roadside, buy fresh fish at the local market and enjoy a rum cocktail while the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

The area is also famous for its kitesurfing – the lagoon in front of the One Eye spot is one of the world’s best locations for kiters.

Be aware of the weather: during the winter months (June-September) the east coast can be windy and a bit cooler. On the other hand, it’s fantastic from October to May.

From here you can take a boat trip to the famous Île aux Cerfs – a small island with one of the world’s most beautiful golf courses and paradise beaches.

Trou aux Biches on the north coast is one of the best spots in Mauritius for snorkelling directly from the beach. The reef is close to shore, and the water is crystal clear with plenty of tropical fish, turtles and coral. The beach is long and white with a gentle slope – perfect for children and adults alike.

The area is significantly calmer than Grand Baie (which is 15 minutes’ drive north) and has a more refined atmosphere.

Trou aux Biches is ideal if you want the north coast’s sunshine and proximity to Grand Baie, but prefer a calmer and more scenic base.

Best for: Couples, snorkelling enthusiasts, families who want beach and tranquillity with proximity to town life.

Too close to the airport. The area around the airport in the southeast isn’t particularly appealing. Unless you’re only in Mauritius for 1-2 days, it’s worth investing in the transport to one of the better coasts.

The south coast without a car. The south coast is beautiful and wild, but hotels are spread out and there’s almost no public transport. Without a car you can feel very isolated.

The east coast during winter (June-September). The southeast winds hit the east coast hardest during this period. It’s still beautiful, but you’ll get more sun and calmer water on the north coast or west coast.

Travel Tips: Important Things to Know About Mauritius

I don’t think I can write a guide on where to stay in Mauritius without also sharing a few travel tips – because there are a couple of things you should know about planning a trip to Mauritius:

The weather varies from coast to coast. This is the most important thing to understand about Mauritius. The north coast and west coast are the sunniest all year round. During the winter months (June-September) the east and south coasts can be windy and more overcast. If you’re travelling during that period, you should prioritise north or west. During the summer months (November-April) all coasts are fantastic, but the south and east have the most spectacular lagoons.

Hire a car. Mauritius is surprisingly small – the longest drive between two points is under two hours. With a hire car you can easily explore the entire island regardless of where you’re staying. Do drive carefully though – you drive on the left (a legacy of the British colonial era), and the roads can be narrow and unpredictable.

All-inclusive is the norm – but not always necessary. Most large resorts offer all-inclusive packages, and they can be good value since restaurants on the island are generally expensive. But if you want to get out and experience local food, half-board (breakfast + dinner) is a better option. The local markets and street food spots – particularly in Port Louis – are an experience in themselves.

Cyclone season is January-March. Mauritius sits in the cyclone belt, and there’s a risk of tropical storms in January-March. That doesn’t mean you can’t travel there, but be prepared for rain and check the weather forecast. October-December and April-June are the most ideal travel months with good weather and fewer tourists.

The flight time is long – but it’s worth it. From Europe the flight takes approximately 11-13 hours (often with a stopover in Dubai, Istanbul or Paris).

Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (MRU) is in the southeast, and most hotels arrange transfers.
