So, where should you stay in Samos? Pythagorion makes a first visit easy, Kokkari suits couples, and the southwest coast gives you more room for beach days.

I’ve chosen five areas and good hotels to help you find a base that suits the holiday you’d like to have.

The Best Areas in Samos

Below, I’ll go through the five areas and recommend hotels at different price points. I’ll also explain the difference between staying in the town centre, by the beach and at a hotel where you’ll need more transport.

1. Pythagorion - best area for first-time visitors

• Distance to the centre: The harbour is a useful reference point for the centre. Potokaki Beach lies west of town.
• Transport: You can walk around the centre. Taxis and a hire car are useful for reaching other parts of the island.
• Journey from the airport: Allow around 5 to 15 minutes by car from Samos Airport, depending on your hotel.
• Price range: € to €€€. Small town hotels and more expensive beachfront hotels give you a broad choice.
• Safety: Watch out for traffic outside the centre, and keep an eye on your belongings at the harbour and beach.

Pythagorion is my first suggestion for a first visit to Samos. The harbour gives the town a natural meeting point, and you can spend the evening choosing a restaurant and strolling past the boats. It’s a base where you don’t need a packed itinerary or a car every day.

I’d stay near the harbour to have cafés nearby and be able to walk to dinner. You can start the day slowly and decide later whether to spend it on the beach or take a trip somewhere. It suits couples and anyone who’d like easy access to a little town life.

Potokaki lies west of the centre and is home to several of the larger beachfront hotels. It’s a better choice when the pool and beach will be part of every day. Just bear in mind that a hotel listed in Pythagorion won’t necessarily be a few minutes’ walk from the restaurant you’ve spotted by the harbour.

You’ll also have a good deal of the island’s history nearby. Pythagoreion and Heraion are on the UNESCO World Heritage List, which gives the town an appeal beyond swimming and dinner. I’d set aside a morning for the historic sites and leave the rest of the day free.

The short airport journey is useful on a brief holiday or with children. Planes can be noticeable at some hotels around Potokaki, though, so read recent reviews if noise bothers you. The hotel’s actual location matters more here than whether it’s marketed as a peaceful beach retreat.

Without a hire car, I’d check the airport’s bus information and choose a central address. A week in Pythagorion can work well with just a few day trips. I’d rather hire a car for a couple of chosen days than feel I had to see the whole island in one go.

Casa Cook Samos - best luxury choice for adults by the beach

Casa Cook Samos is a five-star hotel for adults with an outdoor pool, fitness facilities and a beachfront location west of Pythagorion. It suits a holiday where you’ll spend a good part of your time at the hotel.

I’d choose it for couples and include transport to the harbour in the budget.

Doryssa Method Hotel - a good town hotel near Tarsanas Beach

Doryssa Method is a few steps from Tarsanas Beach and has wellness facilities. It’s a good combination for staying in town while still being able to swim without planning a drive.

One guest mentions the breakfast buffet. Check your chosen rate to see whether breakfast and any spa access are included.

Hotel Damo - a simple option close to the harbour

Hotel Damo has rooms with air conditioning and Wi-Fi near the harbour. It suits a trip where you’d rather spend your money around the island and have a convenient base for restaurants and evening walks.

One guest describes good soundproofing with the windows closed. That’s a useful detail at a central address with activity outside.

2. Kokkari - best area for couples and evenings by the water

• Distance to the centre: The small harbour and restaurants form the centre. Tsamadou is outside the village itself.
• Transport: You can walk around Kokkari. A car or taxi is useful for hotels and beaches further along the coast.
• Journey from the airport: Allow around 25 to 40 minutes by car from Samos Airport.
• Price range: €€ to €€€. Hotels with pools and sea views are often at the more expensive end.
• Safety: The north coast can be windy with waves. Choose where to swim according to the conditions that day.

Kokkari is the village I’d look at first for a holiday for two. Small houses sit close to the water, and the harbour is a lovely place for lunch or dinner. You’ll have a seaside village with enough going on that you won’t need to plan your evenings before leaving home.

I’d prioritise the centre to have restaurants within walking distance. It’s easy to settle into a rhythm of morning coffee, a few hours by the water and a break at the hotel before dinner. A smaller room close to everything can therefore be a better choice than a fancier hotel further away.

Many of the beaches around Kokkari are pebbly, so water shoes are worth packing. The coast can also be windy, and I wouldn’t choose this area expecting perfectly calm water every day. The coves and green hillsides do make a lovely setting for time at the beach, though.

Hotels at Tsamadou are outside Kokkari, even though the village name often appears as the destination in searches. They can be good for views, pools and time at the hotel, but you’ll need to consider the journey into the village. I’d have a car or budget for taxis to eat by the harbour regularly.

Kokkari is also a good base for trips along the north coast to see more than one beach. You can read about the island’s nature and winemaking on Greece’s official page about Samos. I’d choose a few outings and leave plenty of time for the village itself.

Armonia Bay sits above Tsamadou Beach and has an outdoor pool, terrace and restaurant. It’s my choice for views and time at the hotel a little away from the centre.

You’ll be outside Kokkari itself, so factor in transport to eat at the harbour every evening.

Semeli Boutique Hotel - a smaller hotel with a pool near Tsamadou

Semeli is also near Tsamadou and has an outdoor pool, garden, terrace and bar. It suits a stay at a smaller hotel where you don’t need the village restaurants right outside the door.

I’d compare the room types with Armonia Bay and choose based on the view, price and actual route to the beach.

Hotel Athena - a good simpler choice with a pool

Hotel Athena has a seasonal outdoor pool, garden and bar in Kokkari, as well as family rooms. It’s a useful alternative to the more expensive hotels when you’d like to take a break by the pool without paying for a large resort.

One guest mentions the space and balcony. Look at photos of your chosen room type before booking.

3. Marathokampos and Votsalakia - best area for families and longer beach holidays

• Distance to the centre: Marathokampos is the inland village. Votsalakia and Ormos Marathokampou are the coastal areas I’m recommending here.
• Transport: A hire car is useful for day trips. Choose a central address along the coast to walk to restaurants.
• Journey from the airport: Allow around 40 to 60 minutes by car from Samos Airport.
• Price range: € to €€. Studios and smaller apartment hotels can offer a good amount of space for the money.
• Safety: Watch out for traffic along the coastal road, and check the seabed and waves before children enter the water.

The southwest coast near Marathokampos is my choice for a holiday with plenty of time on the beach. You can stay in an apartment or smaller hotel and follow a simple daily rhythm, with breakfast, swimming and dinner all close by. It suits families and longer stays in one place.

The names need a little explanation before you book. Marathokampos is inland, while Kampos Marathokampou and Votsalakia are used for the holiday area along the beach. Ormos Marathokampou is the small harbour further east. I’m recommending the coast here, so check the precise address when a search result says Marathokampos.

Votsalakia works best for spending much of the day on the beach with several places to eat along the coast. The area is more spread out than Pythagorion, so your hotel’s location affects how far you’ll walk. With children, I’d choose easy access to the water, shops and dinner over the most secluded view.

Ormos Marathokampou is my alternative when a harbour setting appeals more than a long beach outside the door. You can stay near the fishing boats and walk to tavernas, but you’ll need to leave the village for more varied beach days. It gives you a quiet base on a smaller scale than the larger resorts.

I’d have a car for some of the time to see the rest of the island. The distances and winding roads mean a trip to the north coast is more than a quick detour after breakfast.

For a week here, I’d choose accommodation with enough space for everyday holiday life and keep the itinerary simple. Look at kitchen facilities, air conditioning and pool access rather than just the number of stars. A good studio near the beach can be the right choice even when a hotel further away lists more facilities.

Places to Stay near Votsalakia and Ormos Marathokampou

Anemos Apartments - best choice for a stay by the harbour in Ormos

Anemos Apartments is by the water in Ormos Marathokampou and has free Wi-Fi and parking. It’s my choice for having the small harbour around you rather than staying along Votsalakia’s beach road.

I’d compare the apartment sizes and choose it for a quiet stay with dinners in the village.

Alexandra - a simple stay a few steps from Votsalakia Beach

Alexandra is a few steps from Votsalakia Kampos Beach. The short walk to the water is the main reason I’d choose it for a holiday spent going back and forth between the room and the beach.

Here, it makes sense to prioritise the location and your actual accommodation over a long list of hotel facilities.

Villa Maria - a good choice with a pool and your own kitchenette

Villa Maria is close to Votsalakia Beach and has a pool and studios with kitchenettes. That makes it easy to have a simple breakfast at home and head down to the water without packing for a full day out.

I’d particularly consider it for families or a longer stay, when the extra freedom is useful.

4. Samos Town and Vathy - best area for town life and convenient transport links

• Distance to the centre: The waterfront is the centre of Samos Town. Vathy is also used for the area and the older settlement on the hill.
• Transport: Buses and taxis make the town convenient for getting around. Check the actual departure port for your ferry.
• Journey from the airport: Allow around 20 to 35 minutes by car from Samos Airport.
• Price range: € to €€€. You’ll find both simple town hotels and hotels with pools outside the centre.
• Safety: Keep an eye on your bags at transport hubs, and allow for hills and traffic on the way to your hotel.

Samos Town is my choice for more everyday town life and convenient transport links. You’ll have the waterfront, shops and restaurants, and you can combine your stay with museum visits and trips around the island. I’d mainly consider it for a short stay or as part of a journey by ferry.

You’ll come across both Samos Town and Vathy when searching. Look at the map, because a hotel by the water gives you a different daily routine from an address further up the hill. I’d stay on or near the waterfront to walk to dinner and avoid too many climbs.

The town wouldn’t be my first choice for a whole week with a sun lounger right outside the door. There are places to swim on the outskirts, including Gagou, but a central town hotel gives you a different holiday from a beachfront one. For a holiday mainly spent on the beach, I’d compare it with Kokkari or Votsalakia first.

Samos Town is good for a day away from the beach. You can check visiting details for the Samos Wine Museum run by the island’s wine cooperative. It’s a way to learn about the local wine tradition without organising a trip to several producers.

To use the buses, check services with KTEL Samos for your travel dates. I’d choose a hotel around the journeys I actually want to make, rather than assuming every beach has frequent buses. The same applies to ferries, as Samos has more than one port.

Places to Stay in Samos Town and Vathy

Ino Hotel & Suites - best choice with a pool on the edge of town

Ino is in the Kalami area of Samos Town and has a pool and restaurant, around 450 metres from Gagou Beach. It gives you a good combination of time at the hotel and the option of heading down to the water.

You’ll be outside the central waterfront, so I’d check the walk and hills before choosing it for a stay without a car.

Aeolis Hotel - a good town hotel by the waterfront

Aeolis has a restaurant, bar and fitness facilities in Samos Town. One guest mentions the location by the promenade and a sea-facing room with a small balcony.

It’s my choice for having town life nearby. Make sure you select a sea view in your booking if that’s what you’d like to pay for.

SeaView City - a good smaller choice with modern rooms

SeaView City is within walking distance of the town’s archaeological museum and has Wi-Fi. One guest mentions modern interiors, a comfortable room and views from the balcony.

I’d consider it for a short town stay where location and the room matter more than a pool. Check what view the cheapest room type has.

5. Ireon - best area for a small seaside village with a short airport transfer

• Distance to the centre: The restaurants and beach are close together in this small coastal village.
• Transport: You can walk around locally. A car or taxi is useful for day trips and evenings in other towns.
• Journey from the airport: Allow around 10 to 15 minutes by car from Samos Airport.
• Price range: € to €€. Small hotels and guesthouses are more common than large luxury resorts.
• Safety: The beach has both stones and sand. Check local conditions and watch children near the water.

Ireon is my suggestion for a smaller seaside village and a short journey from the airport. You can stay near the water, walk to dinner and return to the same little places during the week. It works well when you’d like a simple, easy holiday.

I’d choose Ireon over Pythagorion when a smaller village matters more than a wider selection of restaurants and shops. You won’t have a new town experience every evening, but that doesn’t have to be the aim. Sometimes it’s nice to have found your morning coffee and your spot by the water.

The village beach is a mix of sand and stones, so I’d choose based on the particular stretch of coast near the hotel. With small children, the surface and access often matter more than the beach’s name. A hotel with a pool can be a useful addition to give you two ways to spend the day swimming.

Ireon is also close to Heraion, which gives you a historic reason to take a break from the beach. You can combine a visit with the rest of the day in the village rather than filling a whole day with driving. I’d go early and save the hours around midday for shade and relaxation.

For a holiday without a car, I’d first check the hotel’s address and current bus options. It’s easy to get around Ireon itself, but that doesn’t mean every trip around the island is equally easy. Hiring a car for a day or two can give you a good balance between relaxing and seeing more of Samos.

I’d choose Ireon for quiet days or as a final stop before flying home. A full week in a small seaside village might feel too slow for you, in which case I’d choose Pythagorion or Kokkari instead.

Places to Stay in Ireon

Sunrise Hotel - a good choice with a pool in the small seaside village

Sunrise has a garden, sun terrace and pool, with continental breakfast available. It’s a good choice for having another place to swim at the hotel while staying in Ireon.

I’d compare the total price with the smaller guesthouses and pay extra here if I’d be using the pool for a good part of the holiday.

Hotel Angeliki - a good smaller hotel close to the beach

Hotel Angeliki is around a minute’s walk from the beach and has a shared lounge, terrace and bar. It suits a holiday with a simple base and days spent by the water.

Marialena Pension - a simple choice by the water

Marialena Pension is by the beach in Ireon and has access to a terrace or courtyard. It’s a smaller place for a holiday with the water and village close by.

Choose it for the location and your particular room type. I’d use it as a base for quiet days rather than expect a resort stay.

Where Should You Avoid Staying in Samos?

I’d avoid a remote hillside address when travelling without a car and wanting to walk out for dinner every evening. Sea views can be lovely, but they can also mean a long journey home along a road without a comfortable walking route. Check the whole journey, not just the distance as the crow flies.

Don’t book Marathokampos village when you actually want to stay by Votsalakia Beach. The two locations give you different holidays. The same applies to hotels near Tsamadou, which are outside central Kokkari.

I also wouldn’t choose the north coast expecting calm swimming conditions every day. The wind, waves and beach surface need to suit the people you’re travelling with, and a hotel with a pool can be useful.

Pythagorion is my most straightforward choice for a first trip to Samos, especially for an easy arrival and restaurants nearby. Kokkari is my suggestion for couples, while the Marathokampos coast suits a week on the beach with more space in an apartment. Samos Town makes sense for town life and transport, and Ireon is the smaller alternative near the airport.

For a week, I’d normally choose one base and hire a car for a few days to see more of the island. Two hotels can make sense on a longer holiday, but I wouldn’t move around just to tick off every area. The best base is somewhere that works for both your days and evenings.

But where should you stay in Skiathos? Would you prefer a hotel by a good sandy beach, or somewhere you can walk back to after dinner in town? In this guide, I’ll take you through five areas that offer quite different holidays.

The Best Areas in Skiathos

• Skiathos Town - best area for first-time visitors
• Megali Ammos - best area for a beach close to town
• Koukounaries - best area for a beach holiday among pine trees
• Troulos - best area for families
• Agia Paraskevi - best area for a comfortable beach holiday

Below, I’ll help you choose an area in Skiathos and recommend good hotels across several price ranges, from simple rooms to a more luxurious beach stay.

1. Skiathos Town - best area for first-time visitors

• Distance to the centre: You’ll be in the island’s main town, around the harbour and Papadiamanti Street.
• Transport: You can walk around the centre and take the bus to the south coast’s beaches.
• Journey from Skiathos Airport: Allow around 10 to 15 minutes by car, depending on access to your hotel.
• Price range: € to €€€. Small town hotels give you more options than the large beach resorts.
• Safety: Keep an eye on your luggage at the busy harbour, and choose a side street to avoid noise from bars.

Skiathos Town is my first choice for a holiday with a little more than sun loungers and sea views. You can wander down to the harbour after your morning coffee, choose a restaurant without arranging transport and finish the evening with a drink.

It’s particularly convenient on a short break, when you don’t want to spend your time sorting out how to get around.

Shops line Papadiamanti Street, while the streets leading up through the Old Town feel quite different from the waterfront. Bourtzi divides the harbour and makes a useful landmark for finding your bearings.

I’d choose a central side street over a room directly above a bar, so you can enjoy the town without necessarily hearing it from your bed.

Beach days take a little more planning. You can walk to Megali Ammos, but the bus makes more sense for Koukounaries and the other beaches further west. The local operator’s routes and timetables are useful for a holiday without a hire car.

Services change with the season, so don’t plan your return journey around an old timetable. A hotel near the harbour is also handy if you’re arriving by ferry.

I stayed in Skiathos Town on my first trip to the island back in 2009, and I think it’s a lovely, welcoming little town.

I’d choose the town for a holiday with boat trips, restaurant visits and days at different beaches. With small children and several trips between your room and the sand each day, a beach hotel is easier.

Places to Stay in Skiathos Town

These three hotels offer different ways to stay centrally. I’d choose according to how much time you expect to spend at the hotel.

La Piscine Art Hotel - best choice for adults wanting a pool close to town

La Piscine is an adults-only hotel with a large pool, around a five-minute walk from the centre. It’s a good compromise if you’d like to swim at the hotel in the afternoon and choose your own restaurant in the evening. I’d particularly consider it for a couples’ holiday where a pool matters more than direct beach access.

Skia by Premium Key - a good town hotel for a comfortable room

Skia is in town, around a nine-minute walk from Plakes Beach. It’s my suggestion if you’d rather have a comfortable base between outings and restaurant visits than pay for a large resort. Here, I’d put the hotel budget towards the room itself and head to the island’s larger beaches during the day.

Mouria Hotel - a good small hotel close to the harbour

Mouria has a restaurant and terrace in a central location a short walk from the harbour. I’d choose it for a holiday where you only return to the hotel after dinner and location matters more than resort facilities. The central address also makes it convenient if you’re continuing your trip by ferry.

2. Megali Ammos - best area for a beach close to town

• Distance to the centre: You’ll be just west of Skiathos Town. Many hotels are around a 10 to 25-minute walk from the centre.
• Transport: You can walk into town or take the coastal bus to the other beaches.
• Journey from Skiathos Airport: Allow roughly 10 to 20 minutes by car when planning your journey.
• Price range: €€ to €€€. A seafront location and your room category make a substantial difference.
• Safety: Check the walking route to your hotel. Hills and the main road can make the walk less straightforward than the distance on a map suggests.

Megali Ammos is the area I’d choose to have both a beach and town life nearby. The beach is just west of Skiathos Town, so you can start the day by the water and walk into town for dinner later.

Stay at the end closest to town and you won’t need to decide between a bus and a taxi every evening.

Check the exact address, though. The area stretches along the coast and up the slopes, and a hotel with a view may sit higher than its photos suggest. A short distance as the crow flies tells you little about the walk with a pushchair or tired legs.

I’d choose the shorter walk over the biggest balcony if you expect to eat in town every day.

The beach itself is convenient for regular swims, but I’d still spend a couple of days further along the south coast. Koukounaries, the next area in this guide, gives you more of that feeling of a beach surrounded by woodland.

At Megali Ammos, you can combine a quick dip with shopping, coffee or a boat trip from the harbour. Being able to drop your beach bag at the hotel before dinner without finding transport is a real advantage.

For a couple’s first visit, I think that combination is hard to beat. The area also works with children if you choose a hotel with sensible access to both the beach and the road.

For a holiday where you’ll barely leave the resort, I’d spend the money further west. Here, you’re mainly paying to have two different ways to spend your holiday within easy reach.

Places to Stay in Megali Ammos

Skiathos Avaton Suites & Villas - a good choice for a stay with a view

Avaton Suites & Villas is around a seven-minute walk from the beach and just under two kilometres from the harbour. I’d consider it if you’d like to retreat a little after a day in town. The location is less suitable if your priority is walking straight from your room onto the sand.

Skiathos Thalassa Cape Hotel - best choice for a beach right by the hotel

Thalassa Cape is a few metres from Megali Ammos and has rooms overlooking the garden or the sea. It’s the beach access I’d pay for here, especially for a quick morning swim before breakfast. Choose your room category according to the view, as not every room overlooks the sea.

Nimfi Hotel, Skiathos - a simple beach hotel a short walk from the water

Nimfi Hotel is around 30 metres from the sandy beach, giving you a convenient beach base without choosing a villa or suite. It suits days spent out and about, with the beach close at hand. This is Nimfi Hotel, which is a different property from Nimfi Suites.

3. Koukounaries - best area for a beach holiday among pine trees

• Distance to the centre: You’ll be in the south-west of the island, around 12 kilometres from Skiathos Town.
• Transport: Koukounaries is the last stop on the coastal bus route. A car is useful for more remote places.
• Journey from Skiathos Airport: Allow roughly 25 to 35 minutes by car when planning your journey.
• Price range: € to €€€. You’ll find both studios and one of the island’s more expensive resorts here.
• Safety: Stay clear of marked water sports areas, and don’t leave valuables on the beach while you swim.

Koukounaries suits a trip to Skiathos where the beaches are your main reason for coming. Pine trees stand behind the pale sand, and you’ll be in the island’s south-western corner with several beaches nearby.

Staying here gives you a different holiday from a base by the harbour. I’d spend most days in swimwear and save a trip into town for an evening or two.

The beach is one of the island’s best known, so I wouldn’t choose Koukounaries expecting to have it to myself. There are sun loungers, water sports and plenty of people in the summer season.

Staying nearby means you can arrive early or linger a little longer without fitting the whole day around transport from the other end of the island.

You don’t have to eat at the hotel every evening. The area has tavernas and smaller places to eat, and some studios have kitchens. That makes Koukounaries an option on several budgets, even if the most expensive resort rooms tend to dominate image searches.

I’d compare the total cost of accommodation and meals if the alternative is a hotel stay with more meals included. A studio with a kitchen can make particular sense for a longer family holiday where you’d otherwise buy every meal out.

The coastal bus terminus makes it possible to stay here without a car, but an evening in Skiathos Town still means planning your return journey.

Places to Stay in Koukounaries

You can stay at a resort or make your own breakfast in a studio. These three choices suit different needs.

ELIVI Skiathos - best luxury resort near Koukounaries

ELIVI covers a large site by Koukounaries and the Banana beaches, with several accommodation areas, a pool and a spa. I’d choose it for a holiday where you’ll spend plenty of time at the hotel. Take a little time over your room choice, as its position within the resort affects your daily walk to the beach and shared facilities.

Mandraki Village Boutique Hotel - a good hotel with a pool close to the beach

Mandraki Village has a pool and restaurant near the area around Lake Strofilia. I’d consider it for a beach holiday with a hotel that’s also a pleasant place to spend the afternoon. Its location lets you move between the hotel and the beach without adding a drive to the day’s plans.

Maistrali Studios Skiathos - a good budget choice with your own kitchenette

Maistrali has studios with kitchenettes in a large garden close to Koukounaries Beach. It’s a sensible choice if you’d like to spend your money on outings and tavernas and prepare some meals yourself. I’d particularly choose this kind of accommodation for a longer holiday, when it’s nice to have breakfast at your own pace.

4. Troulos - best area for families

• Distance to the centre: Troulos is around nine kilometres south-west of Skiathos Town.
• Transport: The coastal bus connects the area with town and Koukounaries. You can enjoy a local beach holiday without a car.
• Journey from Skiathos Airport: Allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car when planning your journey.
• Price range: € to €€€. Studios and apartments are good alternatives to villas.
• Safety: Supervise children by the water, and check whether the walk to the beach crosses the main road.

Troulos is one of the first places I’d consider for a trip with children. The local tourism website describes it as a family beach with shallow water, and the area has both restaurants and a good choice of accommodation.

It’s a holiday village where you can keep daily life simple without staying at a large resort.

For me, the main advantage is being able to choose accommodation with a kitchen and still have tavernas nearby. You can have breakfast at your accommodation, lunch by the beach and dinner out. That gives you some flexibility when the children get tired at times that don’t fit restaurant opening hours.

Skiathos Town is also close enough for an afternoon and evening out.

I’d distinguish between Troulos by the beach and properties further uphill. Some of the lovely villas are set back, which makes a car a bigger part of the holiday. If you’ll be walking back and forth with beach gear, the exact location matters more than an extra bedroom.

For two families with a hire car, a villa can be a very good choice. You’ll get the most from the location if the beach and local tavernas are where you expect to spend much of your time.

Troulos is less suitable if you’d like a different cocktail bar every evening. I’d come here for the beach and relaxed dinners.

Cave Luxury Villas Skiathos - a good villa choice for two families

Cave Luxury Villas has a pool and an accommodation option with two bedrooms and two bathrooms, plus a kitchen on each floor, as one guest describes. The floors are connected externally, so the arrangement suits two families better than young children sleeping alone downstairs. I’d choose it for a shared holiday where both families would also like their own space.

La Luna Hotel - a good hotel with a pool and views

La Luna has a seasonal pool, garden and bar, so you can spend some of your holiday days at the hotel. I’d consider it for a stay where relaxing by the pool matters as much as going to the beach. It’s also a good alternative if you don’t need to rent an entire villa.

Yiannis Studios - a good budget choice with a kitchen near the beach

Yiannis Studios has accommodation with kitchens, around a five-minute walk from Troulos Beach. I’d choose it if location and self-catering are your priorities for keeping the overall holiday cost down. A kitchen is particularly useful with children when you want to prepare a quick lunch between trips to the water.

5. Agia Paraskevi - best area for a comfortable beach holiday

• Distance to the centre: The area is around 8.5 kilometres south-west of Skiathos Town.
• Transport: You can take the bus along the south coast. A car is useful if your accommodation is further uphill behind the beach.
• Journey from Skiathos Airport: Allow roughly 20 to 30 minutes by car when planning your journey.
• Price range: €€ to €€€. Hotels with pools and views make up a sizeable part of the choice.
• Safety: Several hotels are on a slope. Check steps and access if anyone in your group has difficulty walking.

Agia Paraskevi is my suggestion for a good sandy beach and a comfortable hotel without going all the way out to Koukounaries. The beach is roughly halfway along the developed stretch of the south coast, and the area has places to eat, bars and water sports.

It works well as a base for a week where most days begin by the pool or the sea.

You’ll also come across the name Platanias when you look at hotels here. Knowing that helps you avoid assuming that a hotel by Platanias Beach is somewhere else entirely.

I’d particularly consider Agia Paraskevi for couples or families with older children who’d like to walk to the beach and have some freedom from a fixed daily plan.

The area’s hotels are both close to the water and up on the hillside. The view can be a large part of the appeal of a higher hotel, but it also means hills or steps on the way back.

For a holiday with small children, I’d choose an easy route to the beach over a better view from the terrace. An adults-only group might well make the opposite choice. A centrally located beach hotel makes everyday trips particularly easy.

I’d choose Agia Paraskevi over Skiathos Town when the hotel and beach are your main priorities, but you’d still like to take the bus to the harbour. Between Agia Paraskevi and Troulos, I’d let the individual hotel decide.

The two areas are close enough that the room type, pool and beach access often matter more than the differences between the resorts themselves.

Atrium Hotel - a good hotel with a pool and sea views

Atrium sits above Platanias Beach, with an outdoor pool and a sun terrace overlooking the sea. I’d choose it for a holiday where you want to spend time at the hotel rather than just sleep there. Its elevated position is part of the appeal, but also the reason it wouldn’t be my first choice for anyone wanting to avoid hills.

Magic Hotel - a good family hotel with a pool near the beach

Magic Hotel is on a hillside around 250 metres from the beach and has both a pool and a children’s pool. I’d particularly consider it with older children who’d like to walk to the water while the adults stay by the pool. The hotel restaurant also makes a quiet evening in an easy option.

Villa POLYTIMI - a good apartment choice with a car

Villa POLYTIMI has apartments in green surroundings and is an alternative to the area’s hotels with pools. I’d choose it for a holiday with a hire car, visiting different beaches and having space to spend the evening at your accommodation. Its position further inland makes it less suitable if you want to do everything on foot.

Where should you not stay in Skiathos?

I wouldn’t choose a remote hotel in the north for a first trip to Skiathos without a hire car. You can certainly find a lovely property, but it may turn even dinner into a drive.

Lalaria is somewhere to visit on a boat trip, rather than a conventional holiday area with hotels and restaurants by the beach.

If you like an early night, I’d also avoid a room directly above the nightlife in Skiathos Town. Equally, I wouldn’t send you all the way out to Koukounaries if your main aim is to go out every evening. It’s more about avoiding the wrong location for your holiday than any particular area being bad.

For a first holiday, I’d start with Skiathos Town or Megali Ammos. The town gives you the easiest base for restaurants and trips from the harbour, while Megali Ammos makes the beach part of everyday life without putting you far from the centre.

Choose somewhere with a walk that suits your group, and use the bus for beaches further away.

I’d choose Koukounaries for the sand and pine trees, Troulos for an easy family holiday and Agia Paraskevi when the right hotel with a pool and a good beach matters most. You don’t need to change hotels to enjoy several beaches on Skiathos.

It’s better to find a base you’ll enjoy coming back to and leave a couple of days open for trips along the coast. On a short visit, I’d keep one base and visit the other beaches from there. That way, you won’t spend half a holiday day packing and changing hotels.

The dramatic, crescent-shaped cliff wall above the flooded volcanic crater is what makes Santorini unique. And waking up to that view – with the deep blue Aegean Sea, the volcanic island of Nea Kameni and the sunset on the horizon – is an experience that’s hard to match anywhere in the world.

1. Imerovigli – The Island’s Best Views and Romantic Tranquillity

• Distance from the airport: Approximately 15 minutes by car
• Transport: Approximately 20 minutes’ walk to Fira. Limited bus service
• Price level: (expensive – but better value than Oia)
• Beach: None – you’re on the cliff
• Atmosphere: Calm, romantic, spectacular

Imerovigli is the highest town on Santorini’s caldera and my absolute favourite place to stay. The town sits 300 metres above the sea and offers perhaps the best views on the entire island – you can see all the way along the caldera with Oia in the distance, the volcano Nea Kameni below, and a sunset that’s even better than Oia’s (yes, I’m saying it).

But the best thing about Imerovigli is what it’s NOT: overcrowded. While Oia drowns in cruise ship tourists, Imerovigli is a peaceful oasis with only around 500 permanent residents.

Here you’ll find stylish boutique hotels carved into the cliffside, fantastic restaurants with caldera views, and an atmosphere that’s perfect for romance.

The famous Skaros Rock – the ruins of a Venetian fortress – is a short hike away and offers one of the island’s best views.

Imerovigli is only 2 km from Fira, connected by a spectacular cliff path, so you have easy access to restaurants, nightlife and buses – but escape the noise. It’s the best of both worlds.

Best for: Couples, honeymooners, those who want the best views without the crowds.

Grace Hotel Santorini

One of the best hotels on all of Santorini – and probably all of Greece. Grace Santorini is an adults-only boutique hotel carved into the cliffside with just 21 suites, many with private plunge pools and panoramic caldera views. The restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean cuisine with caldera views, and the spa offers yoga with volcano views. Everything about this hotel is carefully considered and perfect.

Kivotos Santorini

A more modern alternative to the classic white cave hotels. Kivotos stands out with dark volcanic stone and a more sophisticated aesthetic. A huge advantage: you don’t need to climb up and down stairs to get to your room – a rarity on the caldera. Pools in dark volcanic stone create a unique contrast to the blue sea.

White Santorini Suites & Spa

An elegant boutique hotel with spacious suites, many with private terraces, pool or jacuzzi and panoramic caldera views. It’s a touch cheaper than Grace and Kivotos but delivers an almost equally good experience.

2. Oia – The Santorini Postcard

• Transport: Bus from Fira (approx. 25 min). Taxi expensive. Parking difficult
• Price level: (the most expensive area on Santorini)
• Beach: Ammoudi Bay below (small pebble cove with fish restaurants)
• Atmosphere: Instagram-perfect, luxurious, but overcrowded during the day

Oia (pronounced “ee-ah”) is the Santorini you see in dreams, on Instagram and in travel magazines. This village on the northern tip of the caldera is home to the iconic blue domes, whitewashed houses and the famous sunset spot at the ruins of the Venetian castle.

But there’s a downside: Oia is incredibly popular. During the daytime – particularly when the cruise ships are in port – the main street is so packed with tourists that it’s hard to move.

Restaurants and shops are the most expensive on the island, and the “authentic” Santorini can be hard to find behind all the tourist traps. In the evening after sunset, however, things calm down and the magical atmosphere returns.

Best for: Honeymooners with a luxury budget, photographers, those who want the ultimate Santorini experience.

Places to stay in Oia

Perivolas Hotel

A legendary Santorini hotel with 20 private houses carved into the cliff, many with panoramic terraces and private pools. Perivolas’ infinity pool is one of the most iconic on the entire island – it appears to merge with the Aegean Sea below.

Breakfast is divine, and the restaurant specialises in Cycladic cuisine. Located just outside Oia’s busiest area, so you have peace but are still within walking distance of everything.

Fira is Santorini’s capital and the most practical base on the island. Here you’ll find the widest selection of restaurants, bars, shops and nightlife.

The ferry port and the central bus station are both located here, making it easy to get around without a car. And the view over the caldera from Fira’s cliff edge? It’s still fantastic.

Fira is more “city” than village – you can feel it in the pace, the noise level and the selection of international restaurants and cocktail bars. In the evening this is where the party is, with bars playing music and views over the illuminated caldera.

It’s not as romantic as Imerovigli or as photogenic as Oia, but it’s far more practical and significantly cheaper.

Best for: First-time visitors without a car, solo travellers, those who want nightlife, budget-conscious travellers.

Athina Luxury Suites

Firostefani is my secret favourite among Santorini’s caldera towns. This small village sits between Fira and Imerovigli and offers fantastic caldera views at a more affordable price. The atmosphere is more relaxed and authentic than Oia – here it feels more like a real Greek place than a tourist attraction.

The great advantage of Firostefani is the location: you can walk to Fira in 10-15 minutes along the spectacular cliff path, and Imerovigli is 15-20 minutes in the other direction. So you have easy access to restaurants, nightlife and buses, but stay in a calmer spot.

Hotel prices are generally lower than in Oia and Imerovigli, but many hotels offer almost equally good views.

Best for: Couples who want caldera views without paying Oia prices, those who want to walk between towns.

One of the best caldera hotels in Firostefani with an infinity pool and suites with private jacuzzis. Dana Villas has an incredible caldera view and a romantic restaurant terrace. Prices are significantly lower than comparable hotels in Oia, and the quality is outstanding.

5. Kamari & Perissa – Beach Life and Budget-Friendly

• Transport: Good bus connection to Fira
• Price level: (significantly cheaper than the caldera towns)
• Beach: Long beaches with black volcanic sand
• Atmosphere: Relaxed beach vibe, family-friendly

Kamari and Perissa are the two main beach towns on Santorini’s east side, separated by the impressive Mesa Vouno mountain. Both towns have long beaches with characteristic black volcanic sand, beach restaurants and a relaxed Greek holiday atmosphere.

This is where you’ll find the cheapest hotels on Santorini – often at half the price of the caldera towns.

Kamari is the more organised of the two with a long beachfront promenade full of restaurants, bars and shops. Perissa and the adjacent Perivolos are a bit more alternative with beach bars and a younger vibe.

Both towns have good bus connections to Fira (approx. 20 min), so you can easily visit the caldera towns on day trips. From here you can also visit the archaeological site Ancient Thera on top of Mesa Vouno.

Best for: Families with children, budget travellers, those who prefer beach over views.

Places to stay in Kamari & Perissa

Santo Miramare Resort

The best hotel in Kamari – a stylish resort right on the beach with a large pool, spa and several restaurants. Rooms are modern with white Cycladic aesthetics and many have sea views. The hotel has its own beach section with sun loungers and parasols. Fantastic value for a four-star hotel on Santorini.

Veggera Beach Hotel

A charming beach hotel in Perissa with a pool, restaurant and a relaxed atmosphere. Rooms are clean and comfortable, and you’re literally 50 metres from the beach. The price level is what you’d pay for an average hotel in Athens – a rarity on expensive Santorini. Perfect budget choice.

Where NOT To Stay on Santorini

A hotel “with caldera views” in Fira that’s on the wrong side. Many cheaper hotels in Fira advertise caldera views but actually sit on the wrong side of the road with only partial or no views. Always check photos of the specific room before booking, and confirm that it’s the cliff side (caldera side).

Oia with a pushchair or mobility challenges. Oia is built into a cliffside with hundreds of stairs. Many hotels have no lift. If you need accessibility, choose a beach town or a hotel in Fira at street level.

Too close to the airport. Santorini’s small airport is near Kamari, but there’s no reason to stay right next to it. Hotel prices aren’t lower here, and you’re close to aircraft noise without any benefits.

Still Unsure Where to Stay on Santorini?

Here are my recommendations based on travel type:

Visiting Santorini for the first time? Imerovigli for the best views and romance, or Fira for the most practical base.

On your honeymoon? Imerovigli actually beats Oia for romance – it’s calmer, more private and almost equally beautiful.

Travelling with family? Kamari – flat terrain, beach and family-friendly hotels. Visit the caldera on day trips.

Want the best of both worlds? Split your stay: 2-3 nights in Imerovigli for the caldera experience, and 1-2 nights in Perissa for beach life.

On a budget? Perissa or Kamari with day trips to the caldera.

Santorini is one of those travel destinations that truly lives up to the hype. The dramatic caldera views, the iconic blue domes, the fantastic food and the magical sunsets – it’s all even more breathtaking in reality than in the pictures.

Important Things to Know About Santorini

Before you set off, there are a few things you should know about Santorini.

Caldera vs. beach – the most important decision. The single most important decision is whether you want to stay on the caldera (the cliff – Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, Fira) or at the beach (the east coast – Kamari, Perissa). The caldera gives you the iconic views and the “real” Santorini experience, but it’s expensive and there are no beaches. The beach towns are cheaper and more relaxed, but you lose the spectacular views. My recommendation: stay on the caldera, visit the beaches on day trips.

Stairs, stairs everywhere. The caldera towns are built into the cliffside, and that means endless stairs. It’s fantastically beautiful, but it can be a challenge for people with reduced mobility or families with pushchairs. The beach towns are flat and far more accessible. Many caldera hotels don’t have lifts – always check before you book.

Book EARLY. Santorini is one of the world’s most popular travel destinations, and the best caldera hotels book out months in advance. In peak season (June-September) you should book 3-6 months before departure. In shoulder season (April-May, October) you can often find better prices and fewer tourists.

Getting around the island. Santorini’s main bus station is in Fira, and from there buses run to most towns. An ATV/scooter is a popular way to get around, and taxis can be ordered but are expensive. A hire car is practical, but parking in Oia and Fira is a challenge. Many hotels offer free transfers from the airport or port.

Avoid the cruise ship hours. Santorini is a popular cruise ship stop, and between 10:00-17:00, Fira and Oia can be overwhelmingly crowded. Enjoy these towns early in the morning or late in the evening for the best experience. Santorini International Airport has direct flights from Athens and many European cities during the season.

The metro is my preferred way to get from the airport to Athens. Line 3 runs directly from the airport to Syntagma (40 minutes) and on to Monastiraki (42 minutes) – both stations are right in the city centre, close to the Acropolis and Plaka.

A perfect starting point if you want to experience the best things to do in Athens.

Price and Tickets

A single ticket costs €9. A return ticket costs €16 and can be paid for straight away. Children, young people under 18 and seniors over 65 pay half price (€4.50). Important: a standard metro ticket at €1.20 does NOT apply on the route to and from the airport. You need a special airport ticket.

Since January 2025 you can also simply tap your contactless payment card (Visa or Mastercard) or your phone directly at the entrance.

The system is called Tap2Ride and automatically calculates the cheapest fare. Note that Maestro, Amex and other cards don’t work yet.

If you’re going to use public transport in Athens for several days, it may be worth buying a 3-day tourist pass for €20. It includes one return trip to the airport plus unlimited transport in the city for 72 hours. It’s available at ticket counters at the airport and at stations such as Syntagma, Monastiraki and Omonia.

Departures and Journey Time

The metro runs from the airport between 06:30 and 23:30, with departures every 36 minutes. The journey to Syntagma takes approximately 40 minutes. It’s fast, reliable and free from traffic – unlike a taxi, which can take over an hour during rush hour.

The metro station at the airport is easy to find. Follow the signs from the arrivals hall and you’re there in two minutes. Check the STASY website for current times, or see the airport’s transport page for a complete overview.

2. Airport Bus (X95, X96, X93, X97)

If you land late at night or early in the morning, the airport bus is your best bet. The buses run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – including on public holidays. It’s the only public transport that operates when the metro is closed.

The Four Routes

There are four express routes from the airport:

X95 – the most popular. Runs directly to Syntagma Square in the city centre. Journey time: approximately 60 minutes. This is the one to take if you’re staying in the centre, near Plaka, Monastiraki or the Acropolis area.

X96 – runs directly to Piraeus Port. Journey time: approximately 90 minutes. Perfect if you’re continuing by ferry to the Greek islands (such as Crete, Corfu, Santorini or Mykonos).

X93 – runs to Kifissos Bus Station (KTEL). Journey time: approximately 65 minutes. Relevant if you’re continuing by long-distance bus to other parts of Greece.

X97 – runs to Elliniko Metro Station. Journey time: approximately 45 minutes. Most relevant if you’re staying in the southern part of Athens.

Price and Tickets

A single ticket costs €5.50 (€2.70 for children, young people and seniors). Tickets can be bought at the ticket booth outside the arrivals hall, between exits 4 and 5. You can also buy a ticket directly on the bus.

The buses stop at the Arrivals Level, and you can’t miss the stop. Follow the signs towards “Bus” from the baggage reclaim area. See current routes and timetables on the OASA website.

3. Suburban Train (Proastiakos)

The suburban train – Proastiakos – is an option most tourists overlook, but it can be practical in certain situations. The train connects the airport with Athens Central Station (Larissis Station) in approximately 45 minutes.

Trains depart every 15-25 minutes to Doukissis Plakentias station, where you can change to Metro Line 3 using the same ticket. It’s the same ticket as the metro airport ticket at €9.

Proastiakos is most relevant if you’re continuing by train out of Athens – for example to Corinth or Chalkida. For most tourists heading to the centre, however, the metro is the better choice because you avoid having to change.

4. Taxi

A taxi is the easiest option, especially if you land with a lot of luggage or are travelling in a group. The taxi rank is just outside exit 3 in the arrivals hall – follow the yellow “TAXI” signs.

Prices

There are fixed prices from the airport to the city centre:

• Day rate (05:00-00:00): €40
• Night rate (00:00-05:00): €55

The prices include tolls, surcharges and VAT. Nothing should be added on top. If a driver tries to charge more, ask for a receipt – they’re required by law according to the airport’s official rules.

Important: the fixed price applies ONLY to central Athens (Plaka, Syntagma, Monastiraki and similar areas). If you’re heading to a different neighbourhood, the price may vary. Always agree on the price with the driver before you get in.

Journey Time

Allow 35-50 minutes depending on traffic. During rush hour (approximately 07:30-10:00 and 16:00-19:30 on weekdays) it can take longer. The metro is actually faster during those periods.

5. Private Transfer and Uber

If you want to avoid the taxi queue and have a driver waiting for you with a name sign, you can book a private transfer in advance. It costs a little more than a taxi, but it gives you peace of mind – especially if you land late, have a lot of luggage, or are travelling with children.

You can book a private transfer from Athens Airport via GetYourGuide. The driver tracks your flight and adjusts the pick-up time if the flight is delayed.

Uber exists in Athens but in practice works through local, licensed taxi drivers. Prices follow the fixed airport rate, so there’s no significant saving compared to a regular taxi from the rank.

Which Should You Choose? My Top Advice

Here’s my recommendation based on different situations:

For most people: Take the metro. It’s fast, cheap and runs directly to the city centre. €9, 40 minutes, no stress with traffic. Especially if you’re staying near Syntagma or Monastiraki, it’s a no-brainer.

If you land at night: Take the X95 bus to Syntagma. It runs all night, and €5.50 is hard to beat. The journey takes a bit longer, but it’s your only public transport option after 23:30.

If you’re heading to Piraeus Port: Take the X96 bus directly from the airport. You can also take the metro all the way (Line 3 now runs directly to Piraeus), but the bus is cheaper.

If there are 3-4 of you: A taxi at €40 during the day is actually good value when you split it. That’s €10 per person – only one euro more than the metro – and you’re driven straight to your hotel.

If you want it easy: Book a private transfer in advance. Particularly smart for late arrivals or if you have children and suitcases.

Practical Travel Tips for Airport Transport in Athens

Download the Athens Transport app before you travel. It shows real-time information for the metro and buses. You can also use Google Maps, which is quite accurate for public transport in Athens.

Have cash ready for the bus if your card isn’t Visa or Mastercard. The ticket sales at the airport do also accept cards, however.

Watch out for pickpockets on the metro – especially at Acropolis station and Syntagma, where it’s packed with tourists. Keep an eye on your belongings and don’t keep your wallet in your back pocket. It’s no worse than other major cities, but common sense is always a good idea.

Rush hour in Athens is brutal. Avoid taxis between 07:30-10:00 and 16:00-19:30 on weekdays if you can. The metro isn’t affected by traffic and is clearly the smartest choice during those periods.

Here are my top picks for things to see and do in the Greek capital.

1. The Acropolis and the Parthenon

Let’s start with the elephant in the room. The Acropolis is the reason most people book a flight to Athens in the first place – and rightly so. The limestone hill with the Parthenon on top is simply one of the most impressive things you’ll ever see. The Parthenon was built in the 5th century BC as a temple to the goddess Athena, and although it’s taken a few knocks over the years, it’s still enormous.

A ticket costs €30 for adults (the price increased in April 2025, and there’s no longer a winter discount). You need to choose a time slot when booking online, and I strongly recommend you do. The queue at the entrance can be brutal, especially in the middle of the day. My best advice: book the earliest time slot and use the south entrance on Dionysiou Areopagitou Street, a two-minute walk from Akropoli metro station. It’s far less chaotic than the main entrance. Opening hours vary by season – in summer (April to October) 08:00-20:00, in winter 08:00-17:00. Allow 1.5-2 hours for the visit itself.

Book a guided tour of the Acropolis with entry – it makes the experience significantly better when a guide can tell the stories behind the temples.

2. The Acropolis Museum

Credit where credit’s due: this museum is just as important as the Acropolis itself. It sits at the foot of the hill and houses over 4,000 finds from the excavations. The building itself is an experience – you literally walk on glass floors and can look down at archaeological excavations beneath you.

The top floor is the wildest part. Here you’ll find a full-size recreation of the Parthenon frieze, and you can look out at the real Parthenon through the windows. Tickets cost €15 in high season (April-October) and €10 in low season.

• Important: the ticket to the Acropolis Museum is not included in your Acropolis ticket. They’re two separate things. The museum has its own website with information about opening hours.

Don’t use your camera in the Archaic Gallery hall – it’s not permitted there because the sculptures still have traces of their original colours.

3. Plaka – Athens’ Oldest Quarter

Plaka is the oldest inhabited quarter in Athens, and it feels like an entirely different world from the rest of the city. The cars have (almost) disappeared, and instead you’ll find narrow cobblestone alleyways, neoclassical houses with flowering balconies and small Byzantine churches tucked away around corners.

Take a walk along Lysiou Street, where the scent of Greek coffee and freshly baked pastries hangs in the air. Plaka is perfect for a morning stroll before the tourist coaches arrive. The quarter sits between the Acropolis and Syntagma Square, so you can reach both on foot in under 15 minutes. There are plenty of souvenir shops here – most are overpriced, but the flea market in Plaka is actually quite charming if you’re into old drachma coins and tavli board games.

If you want to stay right in the thick of things, check out the hotels in the Plaka quarter. The location is hard to beat.

4. Anafiotika – The Hidden Island Village

This is one of those things that only locals know about – and now you know it too. Anafiotika is a small pocket of whitewashed houses clinging to the north side of the Acropolis hill. It literally feels like a Greek island in the middle of Athens.

The story is fantastic: in the 1830s, construction workers came from the tiny island of Anafi (which today has roughly 271 inhabitants) to build the royal palace. They missed their island, so they built a miniature version of it – complete with whitewashed facades, blue doors and flowering courtyards.

Today only 45 houses remain, but that’s enough to make you feel like you’ve stepped into a time capsule. Just walk up the steps from Plaka and follow the narrow alleyways. There are no signs, no tickets, no queues. Just you and quiet streets with the scent of basil.

5. The Changing of the Guard at Syntagma Square

In front of the Greek Parliament on Syntagma Square, the Evzone soldiers stand guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Every hour there’s a changing of the guard with a rather special ceremony, where the soldiers in their traditional uniforms (complete with pom-pom shoes) perform a synchronised march.

But it’s Sunday at 11:00 that you really need to come. That’s when there’s a full parade with an entire platoon of soldiers marching up to the tomb with a military band. It’s free, it’s colourful, and it’s one of the most photographed events in Athens.

Arrive 15-20 minutes early to get a good spot. Syntagma Square is also a good starting point for walking down Ermou Street, Athens’ main shopping street.

6. The Ancient Agora and the Temple of Hephaestus

Many tourists settle for the Acropolis and completely miss the Ancient Agora, which sits just below it. That’s a shame, because this is where real life took place in ancient Athens. The Agora was the city’s marketplace, courthouse and social gathering point. Socrates debated here. Democracy was practised here.

The Temple of Hephaestus, which sits at the edge of the Agora, is actually better preserved than the Parthenon. It’s almost complete and gives you a better sense of what an ancient Greek temple actually looked like. Since the combination ticket was abolished in April 2025, you need to buy a separate ticket for the Agora.

7. Monastiraki Square and the Flea Market

Monastiraki is Athens’ beating heart. The square is named after the small monastery (now a church) that sits in the middle of it, and from here you can see the Acropolis towering behind. On Sundays the area explodes into a huge flea market where you can find everything from vintage vinyl records to handmade jewellery and antique coins.

But Monastiraki is also fantastic on a completely ordinary day. Grab a souvlaki from one of the stalls (try Thanasis by the square – it’s legendary) and sit on a bench with a view of the Acropolis. In the evening the square buzzes with street performers and live music.

From here it’s also a short walk to the Psyrri quarter and Varvakios Central Market.

8. Psyrri – Street Art, Bars and Nightlife

Psyrri is Monastiraki’s cool older brother. The quarter was once a grim industrial area, but today it’s one of Athens’ most exciting neighbourhoods. The street art is incredible – entire buildings are covered in colourful murals by local artists. And in the evening, the quarter’s narrow streets transform into a festival of rooftop bars, creative meze restaurants and cocktail bars.

Iroon Square is the quarter’s gathering point, where all generations hang out well into the night. Also pop by the eccentric Little Kook cafe, which changes theme by season – it’s Instagram gold, even if you’re not into coffee.

And if you want to experience the real Athenian food scene, head up Athanais Street to Varvakios Central Market – Athens’ answer to a giant food market where local chefs and housewives compete for the best meat, fish and vegetables.

9. Food Tour Through Athens’ Streets

Greek food is far more than gyros and moussaka (although both are fantastic). A food tour is one of the best ways to experience Athens, because it takes you to places you’d never find on your own. You’ll taste koulouri (sesame bread rings), spanakopita (spinach pie with feta), loukoumades (Greek mini-doughnuts with honey) and of course proper souvlaki from local spots.

I recommend a food tour that takes you through Monastiraki, Psyrri and down around the central market.

This popular food walking tour lasts 3.5 hours and includes 8-10 tastings. Come hungry. Seriously.

10. Areopagus Hill – The Best View in Athens

Here’s my honest tip for the best free experience in Athens: go up to Areopagus Hill (also known as Mars Hill) at sunset. It’s a large smooth rock outcrop just below the Acropolis, and the view is utterly absurd.

You can see all of Athens spreading out below you, with the Acropolis lit up behind.

The rock is low enough that the walk only takes five minutes, and it’s completely free. In the evening, locals and tourists sit side by side with wine and snacks enjoying the sunset. Be careful – the rock has been worn smooth by millions of feet, so tread carefully, especially if it’s been raining.

You’ll find the entrance right by the main entrance to the Acropolis on Theorias Street.

11. Temple of Olympian Zeus (Olympieion)

This temple was once the largest in the entire ancient world. Construction started in the 6th century BC, but it took over 600 years to complete – it was only finished under the Roman Emperor Hadrian. Today 15 enormous columns remain of the original 104, and they’re impressive. Each column is 17 metres tall.

The temple is a short walk from the Acropolis, right by the famous Hadrian’s Arch, which marked the boundary between ancient Athens and Hadrian’s new city. A separate ticket is required since the combination ticket was abolished.

12. Panathenaic Stadium (Kallimarmaro)

This is the only stadium in the world built entirely from white marble. It’s ancient – it was built in 330 BC and rebuilt in marble in 144 AD. But it’s most famous for hosting the opening and closing ceremonies of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. And in 2004 it was used again for the Olympics.

You can walk around on the track and stand on the very spot where athletes stood over 2,000 years ago. There’s also a small museum about the Olympic Games beneath the stands. The stadium is still the finish line for the Athens Classic Marathon.

13. Lycabettus Hill

If you want a panoramic view over all of Athens (and on a clear day all the way to the sea and the Saronic Islands), then Lycabettus Hill is the place. It’s Athens’ highest point at 277 metres, and the view from the top is spectacular – especially at sunset.

You can walk up (it takes about 30-45 minutes from the Kolonaki quarter), or you can take the funicular. At the top you’ll find the small whitewashed Church of St. George and a restaurant with a view. The funicular runs from Aristippou Street in Kolonaki. Wear good shoes – the path is uneven.

14. National Archaeological Museum

If you only have time for one museum besides the Acropolis Museum, choose this one. The National Archaeological Museum is one of the world’s most important museums for ancient Greek art and culture. The collection is enormous – from the golden Mask of Agamemnon to fantastic bronze sculptures and ceramics that are thousands of years old.

The museum is located in the Exarchia quarter, slightly north of the centre. Allow at least 2-3 hours if you want to see it properly. It’s a perfect alternative on a rainy or heatwave day.

15. Exarchia – The Alternative Athens

Exarchia is Athens’ most controversial quarter – and that’s precisely why it’s exciting. It’s the university neighbourhood, filled with students, artists, bookshops, vinyl stores and alternative bars. Street art is everywhere, and the atmosphere is completely different from the polished tourist areas.

The quarter is known for its political activism and bohemian vibe. Here you’ll find cheap and fantastic food, unique cafes and a nightlife that starts late and finishes very late. The Exarchia Farmers’ Market on Saturdays is an experience in itself.

Just be aware that the quarter can be a bit rough around the edges, and there are occasional demonstrations.

16. Philopappos Hill

Let me save you some time: if you want the iconic view of the Acropolis that you know from all the postcards, this is where you need to go. Philopappos Hill sits southwest of the Acropolis and offers the best frontal view of the Parthenon.

The walk up takes 15-20 minutes along a path lined with pine and olive trees. At the top you’ll find the Philopappos Monument from the 2nd century. The best time is late afternoon, when the sun is low and bathes the Acropolis in golden light.

Free entry, no tickets needed.

17. Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon

Okay, this one technically isn’t in Athens, but it’s one of the best day trips you can take from the city. Cape Sounion is about 70 km southeast of Athens, on the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. Here the Temple of Poseidon sits on a cliff 60 metres above the Aegean Sea.

The temple dates from 444 BC and the view is absolutely mind-blowing – especially at sunset, when the sea changes colour behind the white marble columns. The drive along the coast is an experience in itself with lovely beaches and coastal towns along the way.

Book a half-day trip to Cape Sounion if you haven’t hired a car.

18. Rooftop Bars with Acropolis Views

Athens is the world’s best city for rooftop bars. And the reason is simple: no matter which direction you look, there’s a good chance you can see the Acropolis. A cocktail with the illuminated Parthenon in the background is one of those experiences you’ll remember.

A for Athens on Monastiraki Square is the most well-known (and most touristy). If you want a bit more local atmosphere, try the rooftop bars in the Koukaki or Thissio quarters. Prices are Athens prices – meaning far cheaper than you’d pay in Copenhagen, London or Paris. Expect to pay 10-14 euros for a cocktail with the best view in town.

19. Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center

If you need a break from ancient ruins (it happens to all of us), head to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. It’s a modern architectural masterpiece designed by Renzo Piano, and it houses an opera house, a national library and a fantastic park with sea views.

The park is free and perfect for a relaxed afternoon. There are fountains, labyrinth-like gardens and an artificial canal where children (and adults) can play with model boats. In summer there are free concerts and events. It’s slightly outside the centre by Kallithea, but easy to reach by bus or metro.

20. A Day on the Athenian Riviera

Most people don’t know this, but Athens has a coastline. The Athenian Riviera stretches from Faliro Bay down to Vouliagmeni and onwards towards Cape Sounion. Here you’ll find beach clubs, waterfront fish restaurants and a completely different atmosphere from the centre.

Lake Vouliagmeni is a natural thermal pool surrounded by cliffs and greenery – perfect for a swim. And if you just want sand between your toes, there are lovely beaches all along the coast. The tram line runs from Syntagma Square all the way down to the coast, so you don’t need a car. It’s the perfect complement to a week of temple ruins and museums.

Practical Travel Tips for Athens

Tickets: The old combination ticket for Athens’ archaeological sites was unfortunately abolished in April 2025. You now need to buy separate tickets for each site. Book online in advance at Hellenic Heritage to avoid queues. The Acropolis requires time-slot booking.

Transport: The metro in Athens is cheap, efficient and covers most of the sights. Line 2 (red) stops at Akropoli station.

Heat: In summer Athens can get extremely hot (40+ degrees is not uncommon). The Acropolis has even closed during midday heatwaves in 2025. Plan your outdoor visits for early morning or late afternoon. Carry water everywhere.

When should you go? Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-November) are the best periods. The weather is perfect, prices are lower and there are fewer tourists. July and August are hot and packed.

Money: Athens is generally cheaper than most Western European capitals. A solid souvlaki costs 3-4 euros, a beer at a bar 4-6 euros, and a proper dinner for two can be had for 40-50 euros.

Before You Book: Important Things to Know About Zakynthos

Before we dive into the individual areas, there are a few things you should know about Zakynthos.

Hire a car. This is my most important piece of advice. Zakynthos is small enough to drive across in under an hour, but the bus network is limited and unreliable. With a hire car, you can easily hop between beaches, visit the Shipwreck Beach viewpoint and explore the charming mountain villages.

The sea turtles are sacred. Zakynthos is one of the most important nesting sites for the endangered loggerhead sea turtle (caretta caretta). The beaches in the south (Laganas, Kalamaki, Gerakas) are particularly protected under the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

This means certain restrictions – no parasols in some zones, the beach closes from sunset to 7am, and you must keep your distance from any nests. But it’s also a truly magical experience to see the turtles.

The island has two sides. The east coast is flat with sandy beaches and calm waters – perfect for families with children. The west coast is dramatic with white cliffs, wild waves and spectacular views, but very little beach you can actually swim from. Most hotels are therefore located on the east and south coasts.

Avoid July and August if you can. Zakynthos is warm and lovely from May to October, but in peak season (July-August) the island is packed and prices are high. June and September are ideal – warm enough for swimming, fewer tourists and significantly cheaper hotels.

Fly direct. Zakynthos International Airport (ZTH) – named after the Greek national poet Dionysios Solomos – has direct charter flights from several European cities during summer season. Alternatively, you can fly to Athens and take a domestic flight onwards.

1. Tsilivi – The Best All-Rounder for Families and Couples

Quick Facts – Tsilivi:

• Distance from the airport: Approx. 15 minutes by car
• Transport: Good bus connection to Zakynthos Town. Hire car recommended for the rest of the island
• Price level: (moderate – good value for money)
• Beach: Long sandy beach with shallow water – perfect for children
• Atmosphere: Lively but not overwhelming. Good balance between activity and relaxation

Tsilivi (also called Planos) is probably the best place to stay on Zakynthos if you’re visiting the island for the first time.

This well-organised resort town on the northeast coast strikes the perfect balance: enough restaurants, bars and shops to keep you entertained, but without the wild nightlife you’ll find in Laganas. The beach is long, sandy and with shallow, calm water – absolutely ideal for families with children.

Here you’ll find water sports, mini golf, shopping and a good selection of international and Greek restaurants.

In the evening there’s a pleasant atmosphere with cocktail bars and tavernas, but things wind down at a reasonable hour. From Tsilivi it’s about 10 minutes’ drive to Zakynthos Town and under an hour to most of the island’s attractions.

Best for: Families with children, couples who want a bit of everything, first-time visitors.

2. Laganas – Parties, Nightlife and a Long Sandy Beach

Laganas is Zakynthos’ answer to Magaluf in Mallorca or Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. This legendary party town on the south coast has attracted young party-loving tourists for decades, and the nightlife is by far the wildest on the island.

Laganas Road is lined with bars, clubs and restaurants, and the party goes on into the early hours.

But Laganas is more than just partying. The beach is actually 9 kilometres long and one of the island’s best – with fine sand and shallow water. During the day you can enjoy a perfectly pleasant beach holiday here, and it’s also from here that many of the boat trips to Shipwreck Beach and Turtle Island (Marathonisi) depart.

Just be aware that Laganas Beach is part of the national marine park, and there may be restrictions on parasols and activities in certain zones.

Best for: Young travellers, groups of friends, party lovers. Not ideal for families with small children.

Kalamaki Beach is part of the National Marine Park of Zakynthos, which means the beach closes from sunset to sunrise and there are no bars or restaurants directly on the sand. This makes the beach unusually clean and peaceful during the daytime.

If you want to party, Laganas is only 5 minutes’ drive away – but you’ll sleep in peace and quiet.

Best for: Couples, nature lovers, families who want peace but still proximity to Laganas.

Zakynthos Town (also called Zante Town or Chora) is the island’s capital and the only real “town” on the island. The town was rebuilt in Venetian style after the devastating earthquake of 1953, and today it’s a charming place with a lively harbour front, good restaurants and interesting museums.

The Church of Agios Dionysios – named after the island’s patron saint – is a must-see.

Solomos Square is the heart of the town, surrounded by cafes and the impressive post-Byzantine museum. From here you can stroll along the harbour promenade, explore the side streets and find fantastic tavernas with authentic Greek food at prices significantly lower than in the tourist areas.

Zakynthos Town is the best place to stay if you don’t have a hire car, as the island’s bus station is located here.

Where You Should NOT Stay on Zakynthos

Just as there are great areas, there are also places you should think twice about:

Laganas if you’re looking for peace. This one is probably quite obvious, but Laganas is LOUD at night. If you’re a light sleeper or travelling with children, choose Kalamaki right next door instead – you’ll be close to the beach but far from the noise.

Alykes and Alykanas without a car. These charming towns on the north coast are fantastic for families, but they’re quite isolated. Without a hire car you may feel stuck, as buses run infrequently. With a car, however, they’re an excellent choice.

Too close to the airport. Some cheap hotels are in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Avoid them – the noise from planes is noticeable, and you’re not close to anything of interest.

Visiting Zakynthos for the first time? Tsilivi is the safe choice with a good balance of beach, restaurants and entertainment.

1. Corfu Town (Kerkyra) – best area for first-time visitors

Corfu Town is the perfect base for your first Corfu experience. Here you get the island’s best cultural experiences, Venetian architecture and a wealth of dining options right on your doorstep.

Corfu Town (or Kerkyra as the locals call it) is simply magical. Imagine narrow streets with tall pastel-coloured buildings that remind you of Venice and Naples at the same time.

UNESCO has put the town on the World Heritage list for good reason! The two fortresses (the old and the new, although both are quite old…) tower over the town and provide fantastic views over the sea.

The great thing about staying in Corfu Town is that you wake up in the middle of history. You can take a morning walk on the Spianada (Greece’s largest square) whilst the locals play cricket (yes, cricket! It’s a remnant from the British occupation).

The old town is a labyrinth of alleyways where you suddenly find yourself in front of a small church or a cosy taverna that has been there for generations.

The Liston arcades along the Spianada are perfect for a morning coffee or an evening ouzo. Here you sit in the shade under the French arches (yes, Corfu has had many masters through time) and people-watch like a professional.

Speaking of food.. here you’ll find everything from Michelin level to authentic little tavernas where mama still makes pastitsada every day.

The only downside to staying in Corfu Town? The prices are a bit higher than the rest of the island, and in high season it can be very busy. But trust me. The authentic town atmosphere is worth it all. Plus, you have the whole island within 30-60 minutes’ drive.

Siora Vittoria Boutique Hotel

Hidden in the heart of the old town, you’ll find this charming boutique hotel in a renovated Venetian building from 1823. 2. Paleokastritsa – best place for nature lovers

If you dream of turquoise water, dramatic cliffs and green hills, then Paleokastritsa is your paradise in Corfu.

Paleokastritsa is the area that graces all Corfu postcards. And with good reason.

Here, the green mountains meet the deep blue Ionian Sea in the most spectacular way. The coastline consists of six smaller bays, each with its own clear water. It’s like seeing different shades of blue you didn’t know existed.

The Theotokos Monastery sits on top of the cliff with a view that simply… I’m lost for words. The monks have lived here since the 1200s, and you can understand why.. The place is magical.

You can visit the monastery (remember to cover shoulders and knees), see the small museum and buy the monastery’s own olive oil.

The area is perfect for you who love activity. Snorkelling here is first-class. The water is so clear that you can see the seabed at several metres’ depth. There are several dive centres if you want to explore caves and underwater grottos. Kayak hire is popular, and you can row into the small, hidden beaches that are only accessible from the water.

The beach in the main bay can get quite crowded in high season (July-August), so I recommend taking a boat to one of the more secluded bays and boats depart all day.

Or come early in the morning, before the tourist buses arrive. The water temperature is a bit cooler than on the east coast, but on the other hand it’s refreshing and incredibly clear.

The food scene is cosy with tavernas along the beach. Try the local speciality bourdheto (spicy fish soup). Tt’s fantastic. Just be prepared that the prices are a bit higher than other places on the island due to the touristy location.

A little warning: the road here from Corfu Town is winding mountain roads. Beautiful? Absolutely. Easy to drive on? Not if you get carsick. But the view along the way is spectacular!

Places to stay in Paleokastritsa

Akrotiri Beach Hotel

This boutique resort is located secluded on the Paleokastritsa peninsula with its own private beach and views that make you forget everything else. The 130 rooms are modern and elegant, many with a private pool or jacuzzi on the balcony.

The hotel has four pools, an excellent spa and several restaurants. It’s one of those hotels where you actually consider not leaving the area – but of course you should, because Paleokastritsa is too beautiful!

3. Kassiopi – best place for authentic Greek atmosphere

Kassiopi is a charming old fishing village on Corfu’s northeast coast that has retained its authenticity despite its popularity amongst tourists.

Kassiopi has something that many other tourist areas in Corfu lack: genuine charm. Yes, there are tourists, but the town has retained its character as a working fishing village.

In the morning you can still see the fishermen coming in with the day’s catch, and the locals still meet in the square for a coffee and a chat.

The small harbour is the heart of the town. Here the tavernas sit side by side with views over the water and the colourful boats. In the evening, it’s the place to be. Just choose a restaurant, order fresh fish and enjoy the atmosphere.

The price is reasonable, and the quality is top. The atmosphere is relaxed.. no stress, no fancy dress code, just good food and pleasant company.

Kassiopi Castle (or the ruins of it) is worth visiting. It was built by the Byzantines and sits dramatically on a clifftop by the harbour. The view over Albania on the other side of the sea is impressive. On clear days you can almost see the mountains over there. It’s free to visit, and it takes about 20 minutes to walk around.

Beaches? There are several good options. Kassiopi Beach right by the town is a mixture of sand and pebbles with crystal-clear water. Bataria Beach on the other side of town is also great, less commercial and with cosy tavernas.

The area is perfect for day trips. You can easily explore the north coast, visit Mount Pantokrator (Corfu’s highest point) or take a boat to the small islands off the coast. There are also jet skis and kayaks to hire if you’re into that.

Kassiopi attracts many British families (it has done for decades), so you hear quite a bit of English. But compared to Kavos or Sidari, it’s much more sophisticated and relaxed.

This isn’t a party area. It’s a place to relax, eat well and enjoy the real Corfu.

4. Sidari – best place to stay for families with children

Sidari on Corfu’s north coast is the family area par excellence with shallow water, plenty of activities and the famous Canal d’Amour.

Sidari is the area where you see the most pushchairs and inflatable flamingos (and that’s meant as a compliment!) This is the family area in Corfu, where everything is arranged so that both children and parents have a good holiday.

The main beach is perfect for small children with shallow, calm water and a sandy beach. You can walk 20-30 metres out, and the water still only reaches your knees – perfect for the little ones.

Canal d’Amour is the area’s main attraction. It’s a natural formation of sandstone cliffs with tunnels and small lagoons. Legend says that if you swim through the canal, you’ll find your true love (my children just thought it was cool to climb on the cliffs…). It’s really beautiful and completely free to visit. Just come early in the morning to avoid crowds.

The town itself is quite touristy with restaurants, bars, mini-golf, go-kart tracks and various activities. It’s not authentically Greek, but it’s practical when you have small children.

• There’s a large Lidl, pharmacy, doctor; everything you need.

Many places have children’s menus and high chairs. It may sound boring, but trust me.. when your child spills juice everywhere for the third time, you appreciate that sort of thing.

Day trips? Sidari is a good base for exploring the north coast. Peroulades with its sunset spot is a 10-minute drive away. Roda and Acharavi beaches are close by. And if the children need even more entertainment, there’s Aqualand Waterpark about 30 minutes’ drive south.

Is it the most picturesque area in Corfu? No. Is it perfect for families with children under 12? Absolutely yes. You get practical, child-friendly and stress-free, which is worth gold when you’re travelling with kids.

Places to stay in Sidari

Sidari Beach Hotel

Classic family hotel right by the beach with pool, children’s pool and playground. The rooms are clean and functional (not fancy, but they don’t need to be). Breakfast and dinner are buffet with many options. The location is perfect. The beach is 50 metres away, and you can walk to Canal d’Amour along the coastal path.

5. Benitses – best place for relaxed coastal holiday

Benitses is a charming little coastal town on the east coast that has transformed itself from a party destination in the 80s to a relaxed family place.

Benitses has an interesting history. In the 80s and 90s it was one big party place filled with young Brits on the drink.

Now? It has developed into a cosy, authentic place with local charm and primarily families and couples. The old harbour with its traditional tavernas is really cosy, and the new promenade along the coast is perfect for an evening stroll.

The town is divided into two parts: the old fishing village by the harbour (super charming) and the more modern part along the main road (practical with shops and supermarkets).

• I recommend staying in the old part as this is where you find the authenticity. The harbour is small but beautiful with colourful boats and cats lying sleeping in the sun (standard Greece).

The beach is primarily pebbles with some sandy areas. The water is clear and perfect for snorkelling. There are both organised beaches with sun loungers and more natural areas. I like the flexibility. Some days you just want a sun lounger and an umbrella, other days you want to put your towel on the stones and have peace.

The location is perfect for day trips. You’re close enough to Corfu Town to go there for a day. Achilleion Palace (Empress Sisi’s summer palace) is a 5-minute drive away and is absolutely worth visiting. And you can easily explore both the north and south coasts from there.

Benitses isn’t glamorous, and it doesn’t try to be. It’s an honest, cosy Greek coastal place where you can relax, eat well and enjoy life without spending a fortune.

Potamaki Beach Hotel

This hotel is fantastically located by its own small sandy beach just south of Benitses centre. Modern design meets Greek hospitality. The infinity pool with sea view is fantastic, the rooms are stylish and spacious, and the restaurant serves excellent food. A bit more expensive than average in the area, but the quality is high. Perfect for couples or adults who want luxury without Corfu Town prices.

Pink Palace is the area’s legendary backpacker resort. If you’ve travelled in Greece, you’ve guaranteed to have heard about it. It’s… an experience. Pool parties, cheap drinks, communal dining and a mixed crowd of young people from all over the world.

Is it for everyone? Absolutely not. But if you’re in your early/mid-twenties and want to meet other travellers, then it’s the place to be. They also organise trips to other parts of the island.

But Agios Gordios is more than just Pink Palace. There are several other hostels and budget hotels with a more relaxed atmosphere. The area also attracts families, especially amongst Greek tourists, so it’s not ONLY backpackers (although they’re very visible in the evening…).

The tavernas along the beach serve standard Greek food at backpacker prices. It’s not gourmet, but it tastes good, and the portions are large. Sunset from one of the beach bars with a Mythos beer in hand is pretty perfect after a day in the sun.

The area is a bit isolated. There’s not much other than beach, tavernas and a couple of shops. That’s the charm, but it can also feel a bit limited after a few days. On the other hand, it’s easy to take the bus to Corfu Town or hire a scooter and explore the west coast.

Agios Gordios is perfect if you’re young (or young at heart), want to relax by the beach, meet other travellers and don’t expect luxury. It’s authentic, relaxed and budget-friendly.

Alexandros Hotel

Family-run hotel on the hillside with panoramic views over Agios Gordios bay. The rooms are simple but comfortable, the pool lovely, and the breakfast good. A few minutes’ walk down to the beach (it’s downhill, so come back uphill at your own pace…). Good balance between quality and price. More peaceful than the hotels directly by the beach.

Pink Palace

The legendary backpacker resort. Simple rooms (or sleep in a dormitory if you’re really budget-minded), pool, bar, restaurant and daily activities. It’s more than a hotel. It’s an experience.

If you want to meet other young travellers, party and have fun, then this is where you should stay. If you want peace… well, then choose another place. You know what you’re getting, and it delivers exactly that.

Where not to stay in Corfu? Areas you should avoid

There are a couple of areas I’d recommend you think twice about before booking:

Kavos – The southern tip of the island has become synonymous with British party tourism. If you’re under 25 and want to party around the clock, then it’s perfect. But for everyone else? It’s noisy, cheap in the boring way, and far from all the beautiful things Corfu has to offer. There are much better beach areas elsewhere on the island. I’d recommend choosing Benitses or Agios Gordios instead. Here you get great beaches, good company and significantly better atmosphere.

Main road areas outside the towns – Some cheap hotels are located along the main road between towns without direct access to either beach or centre. It can look tempting because of the price, but you end up having to spend money on transport all the time, and it’s neither cosy nor practical. You get a better experience by staying in a proper town or coastal area.

The industrial area by the airport – Yes, there are cheap hotels here. No, it’s not a place to spend your holiday. It’s noisy, unattractive and without charm. Even if you’re flying in late, take the extra 15 minutes to Corfu Town or a coastal area.

Arillas in winter – Arillas is a lovely little beach in high season, but outside June-September almost everything closes. If you’re planning a spring or autumn holiday, then book Corfu Town or Benitses instead, where there’s life all year round.

Still unsure where to stay in Corfu?

So… where should you actually stay? It really depends on what you’re looking for in your Corfu holiday.

Corfu Town is the obvious choice for first-time visitors. You get culture, history, fantastic food and can easily explore the rest of the island. Perfect if you only have a week and want to see as much as possible.

Paleokastritsa is your choice if you dream of the perfect postcard Corfu with dramatic nature and turquoise water. Perfect for couples and nature lovers, but be aware that it can get busy in high season.

Kassiopi gives you the authentic Greek coastal town experience with good food, charming harbour and beautiful beaches. Fantastic balance between tourist facilities and local atmosphere.

Sidari is clearly the best choice for families with small children. Shallow water, safe beaches and plenty of child-friendly facilities make it stress-free to holiday here.

Benitses works well for all age groups who want a relaxed coastal holiday without spending a fortune. Good location for day trips and authentic atmosphere.

Agios Gordios is perfect for backpackers and younger travellers who want beach, fun and social experiences for little money.

My final advice? Consider splitting your stay between two areas with for example, a few days in Corfu Town for the culture and then a week by the coast for relaxation. Corfu is a small island, so it’s easy to move around.

Wherever you choose to stay, you’re going to love Corfu. The island has a magical blend of Greek hospitality, beautiful nature and fascinating history. Just remember sun cream! the Greek sun is stronger than you think.

The area is ideally located within walking distance of beaches, restaurants and shopping in the new town. You can arrive from the airport in 20-30 minutes by taxi or bus.

The atmosphere is magical, especially in the evening when the tourists go home and the narrow, cobbled streets become quieter.

The main attractions, such as the Palace of the Grand Masters and the Knights’ Castle, are right on your doorstep.

And then there is the New Town of Rhodes Town, which is the modern heart of the island. Here, you will find a perfect mix of Greek city life, international shops and a lively harbour promenade.

The area is reminiscent of the new part of Chania in Crete or Olbia in Sardinia.

The shopping opportunities here are fantastic, with both souvenir shops and local artisans. The restaurant scene is a mix of tourist traps and authentic tavernas, so check the reviews.

The price level is on the higher end, but you are paying for a unique historical experience.

The area is very safe, but be aware that the uneven cobblestones can be challenging for suitcases or those with walking difficulties.

Shopping is at the forefront with everything from Greek designer stores to international chains. The restaurant scene is varied, with both traditional tavernas and modern fusion cuisine.

The Mandraki Port and the aquarium are must-sees, and the nightlife is lively without being overwhelming.

The price level is moderate, and you get a lot for your money in this area. The area is very safe and has good infrastructure. However, it can feel less “authentically Greek” than other parts of the island.

2. Faliraki – perfect for beach life and partying

Faliraki is Rhodes’ liveliest seaside resort with a 5 km long sandy beach and famous nightlife. The place is reminiscent of Magaluf in Mallorca but has received a quality boost in recent years and attracts many families.

The area is 15 km from Rhodes Town and has good bus connections. The beach is fantastic for water sports and is the largest water park in Europe. The atmosphere is international and energetic – especially in high season.

In addition to the beach and partying, you will also find Rhodes’ best water park, go-kart track and mini golf.

The restaurants are mainly international, with a few Greek tavernas. Bar Street is the centre of nightlife with clubs and bars.

The price level is moderate, and there are good deals outside the high season. The area is generally safe, but be careful around Bar Street late at night.

This area is excellent for families with children and those wanting to let loose on your holiday. However, be careful to choose a hotel with the proper facilities for your dream holiday.

Where not to stay in Rhodes?

Although Rhodes is generally a safe and tourist-friendly island, some areas may not give you the best holiday experience:

Arhangelos: Although this authentic town is interesting to visit, it is not ideal as a holiday base. Accommodation options are limited, and transport links to the rest of the island are not optimal. Stay in nearby Lindos or Kolymbia.

Afandou centre: The town itself is located a little inland and lacks the charm found elsewhere on the island. The beach is nice but far from the city. Choose Kolymbia or Faliraki instead, both of which have better facilities and beach access.

The industrial area south of Rhodes Town: This area around the port and industrial district has no tourist facilities and is not particularly charming. Instead, book a hotel in Rhodes Town, where you can get much more for your money.

In general, I recommend avoiding staying too far inland, as most attractions and facilities are located on the coast. Instead, choose one of the well-established tourist areas with infrastructure geared towards holidaymakers.

Rhodes has something for everyone, and the choice of area depends significantly on the type of holiday you are looking for.

The old town of Rhodes Town is perfect for those interested in culture and history, while Faliraki is ideal for those looking for beaches and parties. Lindos offers the most authentic Greek experience, and Ixia/Ialyssos is perfect for water sports enthusiasts.

I especially recommend Kolymbia or the new town of Rhodes Town for families with children. If you want to combine shopping and culture, the new town of Rhodes is the obvious choice. If you are looking for more peace and relaxation, Lindos or Kolymbia are ideal.

During the high season (July-August), Rhodes Town and Faliraki can feel very hot and busy. Here, Ixia/Ialyssos and Kolymbia are better choices with more wind and space. Spring and autumn are perfect for staying in the old town or Lindos, where you can really enjoy the atmosphere without so many tourists.

The bus network on the island is good, so you can easily explore other areas, no matter where you stay. My best tip is to choose a location that suits your interests but remember that the whole island is accessible for day trips.

While Athens is generally a relatively safe and exciting city, there are a few areas that aren’t ideal for tourists, especially if you want a comfortable, hassle-free holiday.

Here are some areas to avoid due to safety issues, poor location, or a lack of tourist facilities.

Omonia

Omonia Square was once an important city hub, but today the area is marked by social and economic decline. Although there are some budget-friendly hotels here, it’s known for being less safe, especially at night, and there aren’t many nearby attractions.

If you’re looking for an authentic local experience, better alternatives like Monastiraki or Psiri offer lively but safer, more tourist-friendly atmospheres.

Exarchia

Exarchia is known as a more alternative neighbourhood with a strong youth and protest culture. The area attracts young locals and students, and its artistic and political scene can be interesting to some.

However, it’s also known for demonstrations and unrest, which may feel uncomfortable for tourists.

Although there are plenty of bars and cafés, it’s not a recommended area if you’re after a relaxed and secure holiday.

Budget hotels near the airport

There are two main airports in Crete, one of which is located near the large town of Chania in the western part of Crete.

Chania is an exciting Greek city with both tourists and a local atmosphere.

If you want to stay close to a great beach, I wouldn’t immediately recommend staying in Chania, as you’ll miss out on the fantastic beaches Crete is famous for.

Instead, it would be best if you considered staying in one of the following two areas: a short drive (or a short trip with one of the affordable buses) west of Chania.

However, let me recommend some good hotels in Chania for those prioritising city life over beaches.

Places to stay in Chania

Let’s look at some of the best places to stay in Chania’s city centre.

Agia Marina is the perfect area when you travel to Crete with children. I was here a few times in my very young days when I was with the family on a classic charter trip, which was perfect.

On my most recent trip to Crete, I could wander around Agia Marina as an adult. Now, my adult brain can also approve of the area as a good place in Crete.

It is perfect for families with children because there are many good hotels, beaches and entertainment.

This is a classic summer holiday area with many restaurants, souvenir shops and excursion opportunities.

For the slightly older clientele, there are quite a few walking-in-town options and, among other things, a beach club that looks quite nice.

Staying in Agia Marina on a trip to Crete is a good choice.

Here you are close to the airport, can go on all the excursions you want or enjoy relaxation at your hotel with a few detours into Chania town.

This is one of the most popular holiday areas in the western part of Crete, so naturally, Agia Marina has plenty of great hotels. Here are some of the best.

3. Platanias – stay right by the beach

I stayed in Platanias on my trip to Crete in the summer of 2021, and it was absolutely perfect.

Platanias has gradually merged entirely with Agia Marina, where the latter is a little closer to Chania town.

In Platanias, many families with children also seemed to have a great time during my trip. 

The beach in Platanias is very similar to the one in Agia Marina. Also, it has a view of the beautiful rocky island out in the sea.

On the main street, restaurants, bars and souvenir shops lie side by side, with countless opportunities to do something.

There is a very steep hill right by the ‘central square’ in Platanias, where you get up quickly and thus get a phenomenal view of the whole area.

Plenty of restaurants allow you to sit with a sea view and enjoy your dinner while the sun goes down.

I highly recommend staying in Platanias on your trip to Crete – it’s like Agia Marina, easy and convenient and many good hotels when I check the selection from home.

We’ll start with a perfect choice for those travelling to Crete and wanting to save some money by having the option to cook at home a few times.

4. Rethymno – beautiful city with plenty to do

Then we have to go a little further away from Chania and east to Rethymno, located about halfway between Chania and Heraklion (the central city on Crete and where we will get to in a bit).

Rethymno, like Chania, is a port city that is the ‘capital’ of its own province on Crete, so this is one of the island’s larger cities.

I stayed in Rethymno on a trip to Crete maybe 10 years ago and was very happy about it; just like in the areas mentioned above, it is a classic summer holiday area with all that entails of restaurants, bars and amusements.

However, Rethymno is slightly more laid back than Platanias and Agia Marina, where you are never far from the nearest Scandinavian tourist :D.

Rethymno town is extremely cosy ala Chania and has this classic Greek atmosphere with narrow streets and cosy restaurants.

In the area around the city, there are several good sandy beaches, and it is a tourist area, so there are plenty of good hotels.

Places to stay in Rethymno

The Old Town in Rethymno is exciting, but the entire coastal area around the city has excellent places to stay. So let’s take a closer look at a couple of the best hotels in and around Rethymno.

We’ll start with the best place to stay for those who want to be right in Rethymno.

5. Heraklion – stay in the largest city in Crete

Heraklion is the ‘capital’ and the largest city in Crete.

In other words, it is a European metropolis with all that it entails, and it is thus not immediately an area where you, as a tourist, would choose to stay on a summer holiday to Crete.

Like the rest of Crete, Heraklion has a tumultuous history with many takeovers by the Arabs, the Venetians and the Turks.

You can still feel the history in Heraklion, so it’s a place I recommend stopping by when you travel to Crete.

But not immediately if you travel to Crete in the summer – because it gets boiling there, and it can be a bit of pressure to walk around the big city when it’s 35 degrees.

The city deserves a place on the list of where to stay in Crete, as it makes good sense to stay here if you travel to Crete outside the high season.

At the same time, you will be pretty close to Knossos, which for many, is the main reason for travelling to Crete outside the high season

Places to stay in Heraklion

Let’s look at a few good places to stay in Heraklion and hotels that may not be right in the centre but are close enough to Heraklion city to combine a beach holiday with a city break.

We’ll start with a hotel in the centre of Heraklion, featuring a rooftop pool with a view of the Venetian harbour in Heraklion.

Warning: Malia is a party destination!

And then just a warning for those who want to go to Crete and relax. You shouldn’t to travel to Malia – it’s Crete’s answer to Sunny Beach or Agia Napa in Cyprus, where the music throbs and the drinks flow

Here, the famous main street is packed with bars and discotheques, filled with young Brits who like to party all night long.

So if you want to go on a party trip to Crete, then Malia is, on the other hand, the right area to stay in
