1. Paddington & Bayswater – best area to stay on a budget

I always recommend first-time travelers to London find a good hotel just north of Hyde Park.

The area, which can be called both Paddington and Bayswater, is an excellent introduction to London – and there are many cheap hotels.

So if you’re traveling to London with kids and looking for a cheap hotel, this is an excellent place.

For many decades, Paddington and Bayswater are areas of London that have been among the most used by tourists traveling to London to experience the best the city offers.

We are in the west of London but very close to the central part. You will stay within walking distance of Marble Arch, where Oxford Street starts with all its high-street shops and all that comes with it.

Because Paddington and Bayswater are popular tourist areas, you will find everything you need, from cafes, restaurants, and cozy pubs.

As for personal favourites, I recommend the Mitre Lancaster Gate, The Swan and the Leinster Arms, which all serve good beer and classic British pub food.

You can quickly get around the rest of London with the Central Line from Lancaster Gate and Queensway, while the District and Circle Line run from Bayswater and Paddington stations.

If you land at Heathrow Airport, you can get to Paddington St by express train in 15 minutes, the fastest of all London airports.

If I have to mention a downside to the Paddington and Bayswater areas, they may not be the most authentic areas.

So if you would like to stay in an area of London where you meet ordinary Londoners, you can choose another place to book a hotel – there are plenty more areas to come in this guide.

However, it is a perfect place to look for a hotel for tourists travelling to London for the first time and families with children.

Places to stay in Paddington & Bayswater

So let me share some of the hotels in areas I have stayed at and can recommend. It must be said that there are many hotels in this area and it is an excellent place to book cheap, classic London hotels.

However, be aware that many hotels can be relatively run down, so just read the updated reviews if you find a good deal – or choose one of these hotels I recommend.

Best Luxury Hotel: Royal Lancaster London

Royal Lancaster London is a classic, luxurious hotel located in London’s Bayswater area, with an unrivalled view over Hyde Park.

Its central location right next to Lancaster Gate Station and a short walk from Paddington Station makes it ideal for you if you wish to explore the city and can manage a lot on foot – or with a short journey on the Central Line.

The hotel has a relaxed, modern environment with bright, sophisticated rooms combining modern and vintage details.

It really is a delightful hotel and the location is just about perfect – especially for first-time travellers to London.

Best Mid-Range Hotel: Best Western Mornington Hotel Hyde Park

Best Western Mornington Hotel is an excellent place to stay, just a few steps from Hyde Park and Paddington Station.

The rooms are a beautiful blend of classic English charm and modern conveniences.

Guests praise the helpful staff and the appetising breakfast.

The Library Bar, with its cosy atmosphere and selection of fine wines, is the perfect end to a day in the city.

Best budget hotel: Point A Hotel Paddington

Point A Hotel Paddington offers value for money without compromising on quality. This hotel is popular for its excellent location, close to both Paddington Station and the vibrant Little Venice.

Though the rooms are compact, they are cleverly furnished and thoughtfully designed for comfort.

I have stayed at several Point A hotels in the UK and think they’re fine once you know what you’re getting: it’s a budget hotel with little comfort, but everything is nice, relatively modern and clean.

An alternative budget-friendly place to stay in Paddington could be Athena Hotel.

2. Soho & Covent Garden in West End – best areas in Central London

Let’s jump into the heart of London in Soho and Covent Garden. This is the best place to stay in Central London.

If you stay in this part of town, you could spend your entire city break in London without public transport.

In other words, these are perhaps the best areas to stay in for most tourists, but they also come at a higher price.

Therefore, you should probably prepare to pay more for hotels here in the West End than in several other areas I mention here in the guide on where to stay in London.

Soho and Covent Garden are not cheap!

Soho is located just south of Oxford Street, and it’s undoubtedly one of the nicest areas in London, where there is always life in the small cosy streets.

You will find Carnaby Street, Liberty London and Berwick Street Food Market in Soho.

I rarely stay in Soho when I travel to London (because of the price tag – I wish I was always staying in Soho).

But I always visit the area in London and like to swing by good pubs like the Old Coffee House, John Snow and the Mason Arms, which is technically in Mayfair because you have to cross Bond Street.

Covent Garden is also an area for you who want to stay close to everything in central London.

Here I recommend enjoying the area around Seven Dials, visiting the cosy Neal’s Yard, and maybe having a pint at The Lamb & Flag or The Harp.

In other words: if I had to point to an area of London where everyone would be happy to book a hotel, it would probably be Soho and Covent Garden.

You can easily walk to all the famous musical theatres, so it’s the best area to stay in London for theatres.

You’ll also be close to places of interest such as Chinatown, Leicester Square, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square and all the most notable things to do and see in London.

Places to stay in Soho & Covent Garden

There is no doubt that you get more bang for your buck further out of the absolute centre of London, but having said that, there is also something nice about living right in the city’s heart.

Here are a few good hotels where you stay as centrally as possible.

Best luxury hotel: Chateau Denmark

Chateau Denmark is a fusion of history and modern style in London’s iconic music and theatre district. Each room is unique, with vintage and rock ‘n’ roll-inspired interior details, a tribute to the area’s rich history.

Former guests love the relaxed atmosphere, and the bar, serving signature cocktails, is a local hotspot.

Another luxury option in the area is The Londoner which has a lovely indoor swimming pool.

The Londoner is a luxurious oasis in the heart of Leicester Square. Known as the world’s first “super boutique hotel”, it displays a refined balance between cosmopolitan glamour and homey comfort.

Former guests praise the five-star service, the panoramic views from the rooftop and the award-winning dining options.

Best mid-range hotel: AMANO Covent Garden (has rooftop bar).

Amano Covent Garden is an elegant choice for those who wish to be in the centre of London.

Mimi’s Hotel Soho is an irresistible blend of comfort and cool in the vibrant Soho. The smart, compact rooms are perfectly decorated with an eye for detail.

Note that the cheapest rooms really are small – one primarily chooses this hotel for its extremely good location in the heart of Soho.

An alternative cheap hotel in Soho is Zedwell Piccadilly Circus.

The hotel is designed with a focus on sleep quality, with soundproof rooms, comfortable beds, and blackout curtains.

Despite its central location, you can thus be assured of a good night’s sleep – and then wake up right in the heart of London, where you can walk to many of the city’s attractions on foot.

3. Camden Town – best area for a rock n roll vibe

Camden Town is one of my absolute favourite areas in all of London and a place I have spent many days.

In the 90s, Camden Town was known as one of the trendiest places in Great Britain, and it was not rare to see musicians from bands such as Blur, Oasis, The Smiths and Pulp hanging out in the pubs.

In other words, Camden and music go hand in hand, which you feel as soon as you step out of Camden Town Tube Station and turn right up towards Camden Market.

On the way up to the market, you pass exuberant shops, street shops and souvenir shops with everything your heart desires if you like rock n roll or are into a slightly alternative style of clothing.

I love British music and style, so I can spend many hours walking in Camden and especially when I was in my early 20s I felt so cool when I bought new clothes and sat down at The Good Mixer, The Hawley Arms or The Dublin Castle where I had a pint and tried to look like a local

Camden Town is an excellent area for those who don’t need to stay in downtown London and maybe travel with a teenager who likes an alternative style.

If you stay in Camden Town, I recommend going over to Primrose Hill, from where you get a fantastic view of London.

From Camden Town tube station, it only takes 8 minutes on the Northern Line down to Tottenham Court Road, where Oxford Street starts, and you can venture into Soho or Covent Garden.

So even though Camden is a little further from the absolute centre of London, it is still a central area of the metropolis.

Camden Town is also a great place to stay in London for nightlife.

Places to stay in Camden Town

Camden is one of the boroughs in this guide that is not packed with hotels. In other words, there is not a hotel on every street corner, but here are a few recommendations from my many trips to London.

Best luxury hotel: There is none in Camden Town, but the closest I recommend is St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel London, just off King’s Cross St Pancras, approximately 15 minutes walk to Camden Town.

St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel is an iconic masterpiece of Gothic architecture. It is probably one of London’s most splendid hotels, which is saying something!

This hotel exudes elegance and historical charm while offering modern luxury.

Guests highlight the breathtaking architecture, the lavish indoor pool with spa, and the exquisite gastronomy in the hotel’s restaurants.

Best Mid-Range Hotel: Holiday Inn London Camden Lock (Camden Market view)

With its breathtaking view of the canal and Camden Lock Market, the hotel is an ideal base for sightseeing in one of London’s most exciting areas.

I have stayed here myself and I truly think it’s a great hotel.

The Hurdwick is a smart boutique hotel in Camden Town.

4. Bloomsbury – best central area with cheap hotels

Often when travelling on a city break, most of us look for the sweet spot: we want to stay centrally in a proper hotel that is not too expensive.

This is where the somewhat overlooked Bloomsbury area in central London emerges. The area is sandwiched between King’s Cross and Covent Garden, so we are definitely in central London.

There are highly luxurious hotels in this area that few ordinary tourists can afford (more on the best luxury hotels in London later in this guide), but also quite a few hotels in the middle and budget class.

It’s a charming area where you can find completely local streets with ordinary houses, where real people live, just living their lives.

That’s why we also find several excellent restaurants, cafes and pubs that don’t just live on tourists and therefore have a slightly different atmosphere than around Leicester Square and the like in the city centre.

If we extend Bloomsbury a little to the north, I can recommend Casa Tua Kings Cross for breakfast and good coffee, while you should make your way past Friend at Hand and The Lamb for a few pints.

Bloomsbury is an underrated area of London that can be recommended to all types of travellers. Russell Square tube station is the ‘centre’ of the area, but there are many tube lines and buses all around the area.

Furthermore, in Bloomsbury, you are within walking distance of The British Museum, one of London’s best free things to do.

Places to stay in Bloomsbury

Bloomsbury is a good area for most travellers and an area in central London where you can stay cheaply. If you want – because the opposite is undoubtedly also possible.

Let me introduce a few good hotels in Bloomsbury.

Best luxury hotel: Kimpton Fitzroy London

Kimpton Fitzroy is an architectural beauty in London’s historic Bloomsbury neighbourhood.

The hotel, situated in a magnificent Victorian building, combines grand history with modern luxury.

NYX Hotel London Holborn is a modern gem in the heart of London. With its trendy interior, filled with artworks, and its colourful bar, the hotel offers guests a unique experience.

The location is ideal for sightseeing both old and modern London – and there is a lovely indoor swimming pool.

Best mid-range hotel: Mercure London Bloomsbury

Mercure London Bloomsbury is an elegant fusion of modern design and historical charm, located in the delightful Bloomsbury neighbourhood.

The rooms are decorated with an eye for detail, combining comfort with modern conveniences.

Guests praise the hotel’s fantastic location, close to Covent Garden and the British Museum, the excellent service, and the relaxed atmosphere in the hotel’s bar and lounge area.

Best Budget Hotel: The Royal National Hotel

The Royal National Hotel is a very large, budget-friendly hotel located in Bloomsbury.

There’s not much else to say other than, if you’re looking for a cheap hotel in the centre of London, this place is very popular.

It’s not very luxurious, but it’s a perfect hotel if you are, for example, a group of friends on a trip and need a simple place to stay.

From Bloomsbury, you will also be within walking distance to the pickup spots for many of the buses to Harry Potter World in London, so it would be a great place to stay if you’re planning to visit the famous Harry Potter museum.

5. Shoreditch – best area for nightlife

In this guide to the best areas and districts in London, there must be something for young travellers coming to London to experience the world-famous nightlife.

I’m mainly into a couple of pints in a quiet pub, but I know many people want to go out in London.

And for that, there is no better area than Shoreditch in East London. Shoreditch is cool and trendy that cannot be debated.

This is where you’ll find the trendiest travellers from all over the world, all of whom must have photos for Instagram in front of the most extraordinary street art.

In Shoreditch, you should make your way past Brick Lane, London’s Hipster High Street and a wonderful mix of Indian restaurants, vintage shops and record stores.

No music fan can go to Shoreditch without stopping by the enormous Rough Trade Records store on a side street off Brick Lane by The Truman Brewery.

I like Shoreditch, and the mix of new and old thrives well in this area, so it’s a great place to book your stay in London.

I recommend walking north to Columbia Road, Hackney City Farm and Broadway Market in Hackney.

It’s cool and trendy mixed with the best of The East End.

As such, there are none of the well-known London sights in the area, but you can walk down to the Tower of London with a bit of goodwill

Places to stay in Shoreditch

Shoreditch and London’s East End around Liverpool Street Station have significantly transformed in the last 10-20 years. It used to be anything but a cool area, but it suddenly became attractive when the artists moved in in the early 00s.

That is why many hotels were hastily built, and now you can choose from many different accommodation options in different price ranges in Shoreditch.

Best Luxury Hotel: Mondrian London Shoreditch

Mondrian London Shoreditch is a true design hotel in the heart of London’s trendy Shoreditch neighbourhood.

The hotel is known for its playful, creative atmosphere and its spacious, artistically decorated rooms.

If you’re looking for a luxury hotel in Shoreditch, then Mondrian is a good choice.

Best Mid-Range Hotel: Shoreditch Inn

Shoreditch Inn is a modern budget hotel that offers comfort and value right in the heart of Shoreditch’s vibrant neighbourhood. Although the rooms are compact, they are well-appointed and clean.

Best Budget Hotel: Point A Hotel London Shoreditch

Point A Hotel London Shoreditch is an affordable accommodation option for travellers who want to be close to everything without it costing too much.

There are several Point A hotels in London and they are always a safe choice when it comes to cheap accommodation without much comfort.

6. Bankside – best area if you want to try something new (my new favourite!)

And then to an area situated south of the Thames. It’s got a few differents names: Bankside, The South Bank and Southwark.

Most of what a tourist would like to experience in London takes place north of the Thames, but I would still recommend this area to those who have been to London a few times and would like to try a new district.

That’s how I felt when I first booked a hotel in Bankside.

I wanted to experience the pros and cons of staying here in an area I had often passed by on my way to the fantastic Borough Market.

To be more specific, Bankside and the whole area around London Bridge offer many experiences within short distances.

Here you can find Shakespeare’s Dome, Tate Modern, Southwark Cathedral, Borough Market and then the walk along the Thames past HMS Belfast to Tower Bridge and Tower of London is also lovely on a sunny day in London.

If you go the other way, you can walk along the Thames to the London Eye, which can also be recommended. This is a good area if you like walking around on your London holiday.

There are a few outstanding new hotels in the area and several tube lines, so if you want to try staying in an area that’s a little off the beaten path, consider booking into the Bankside area around Borough Market west of London Bridge.

This is the place to stay in London if you want to experience something different than the classic touristy areas.

The area is also referred to as Southwark.

Places to stay in Bankside

Southwark and Bankside have blossomed in recent years, so the hotels in the area are also very new and modern.

Best Luxury Hotel: Sea Containers London

Sea Containers London is an extremely stylish hotel located right on the Thames.

Therefore, the hotel offers a unique view of the river, stylish rooms, and an innovative restaurant.

Of course, many rooms are arranged with views of the Thames, and the hotel also has a bar and restaurant where you can sit and enjoy the view.

I stayed at this hotel in the summer of 2023, and I think it’s excellent and the location is perfect.

Best mid-range hotel: citizenM London Bankside

citizenM London Bankside is a boutique hotel experience for the modern traveller.

citizenM hotels are known for smart, compact rooms that are high-tech and comfortable.

An alternative could be Native Bankside (a brilliant aparthotel) – I stayed here a few years ago and think it’s an extremely good place.

Best budget hotel: ibis London Blackfriars

Ibis hotels are, much like Point A as I have mentioned several times, known for being neat, clean and never particularly expensive.

The hotel in Bankside is no exception and with a location a few minutes’ walk from the Thames, this place is a good bet for you if you’re looking for a budget-friendly hotel.

Getting to Bankside from Gatwick and Luton Airport by train is easy.

7. Mayfair – best area for luxury hotels

There must also be a recommendation for you who travel to London and want to experience world-class luxury. Here we have to mention Mayfair, one of the most expensive areas in Europe – and perhaps the whole world.

We are back on the north side of the Thames, in central London, with Soho on the right, Oxford Street to the north, Hyde Park to the west and Buckingham Palace to the south.

In other words, we are in the heart of London, where the most expensive homes in the English capital are found. It’s not an area I would recommend to ordinary tourists, as the hotels in Mayfair exude upper class and are rather expensive.

But if you are used to luxury and want to experience the absolute best of London, then there is no doubt: you must book into one of the many luxury hotels in Mayfair.

Places to stay in Mayfair

This is where it gets tricky. Because some of the absolute best hotels in London are located in Mayfair, I must admit that I have not visited them. But I would like to recommend some hotels that get the best reviews.

Best luxury hotel: The Ritz

The Ritz is one of London’s most famous luxury hotels, radiating elegance and old-fashioned glamour. It’s known for its exquisite service, lavish decor, and the legendary afternoon tea.

If you want to stay at one of the most well-known hotels in London, then The Ritz is the place to book your stay.

Another fantastic luxury hotel in Mayfair is The Dorchester.

The Dorchester is an icon in the luxury hotel industry, located in the heart of Mayfair. It offers exquisite service, luxurious rooms, and award-winning restaurants.

A fine choice for you if you want to stay in Mayfair but are looking for a hotel that is a little more budget-friendly – although it’s hard to find in this exclusive area.

More of my favourite places to stay in Central London

If you have not yet found a hotel that suits your trip to London, here are a few other suggestions located in perfect areas for most tourists.

Park Plaza County Hall London is a family-friendly hotel located a few minutes walk from the London Eye and Big Ben, so you stay incredibly close to the most famous sights here.

The neighbouring hotel Park Plaza Westminster Bridge London, is also excellent, but it is typically a bit more expensive – purely because the hotel has an indoor swimming pool, so if you want to take a dip, you should choose this one.

The Wellington Hotel by Blue Orchid is located in Westminster close to Victoria Station, where you enter by train from Gatwick Airport. You are also staying within walking distance of Buckingham Palace and Big Ben.

The hotel is in some tranquil streets – remember to visit The Jugged Hare pub around the corner, where they serve delicious pies.

Let me briefly explain the concept for those of you who have yet to try afternoon tea. And let me also just clarify that it’s perfectly okay to order coffee – I’ve done it many times

Tea: A vital part of the experience. Various types of tea are served, from classic black teas like Earl Grey and Assam to more exotic blends and herbal teas.

Sandwiches are typically small and delicate, cut into fine finger sizes. Fillings can vary, but popular choices include cucumber, smoked salmon, egg with mayonnaise, and coronation chicken.

Scones: Typically served warm with clotted cream and jam. Scones are a baked item that is soft inside and slightly crispy outside.

Cakes and Sweets: A selection of small cakes, tarts, and other pastries. These can vary depending on the venue and season.

Let’s start with some of the main London attractions most tourists will want to experience.

1. London Eye

The London Eye is the giant Ferris wheel located on the banks of the River Thames. I have personally taken the London Eye ride numerous times and have never regretted a ride.

It is an impressive view over London that you get on the trip, which takes about half an hour. A ride on the Ferris wheel is an experience for travellers of all ages, and indeed a classic London thing to do that should be tried.

However, for God’s sake, remember to book tickets for the London Eye in advance unless you like standing in a queue

2. Musicals and West End Shows

London is a mecca for those who want to see good musicals. There are many musicals in London every day, so there will also be one when you visit the English capital.

It is highly recommended to buy tickets for musicals in London in advance, as they are popular and the tickets are often sold out for the most famous shows.

You can buy tickets for musicals such as Mamma Mia, The Lion King, Les Miserables, Phantom of the Opera and many more.

3. Hop On Hop Off Sightseeing Bus

Certainly not one attraction, but a super simple way to see many of London’s best sights in one (or two) days.

If you book this bus tour, you can choose between different routes that pass by sights such as Big Ben, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London and the aforementioned London Eye.

You can hop on and off as you like, so there is also the opportunity to get off at a point of interest and take a closer look at the place.

4. Tower of London and Tower Bridge

It’s hard to avoid the Tower of London when we talk about things to do in London you must pass by on your trip.

The Tower of London was founded way back around 1078 by William the Conqueror and was located outside the city in its time.

It would be a shame to say that is the case here in our time – of course, the Tower is in the east of London, but you can sit outside Starbucks and have a cappuccino while enjoying the view of the old prison, which now mostly is a tourist attraction, but remains the place where the British crown jewels are kept.

5. Buckingham Palace

Buckingham Palace, where the British royal family holds court, naturally also deserves a place on a list of must-see places in London.

However, I must admit that I have a bit of a hard time with Buckingham Palace and the whole ‘changing of the guards. The latter is often mentioned as a must-see when travelling to London.

I saw it myself when I was on a school trip in the 8th grade, and I took the students to the change of the guards a few years ago when I was a tour guide for a school class in London, following the teachers’ instructions.

I have to say that it is nothing special – there are incredibly many people and it is difficult to see anything. That’s it

On the other hand, Buckingham Palace is very close to the absolute centre of London, so it is easy to pass by and walk down The Mall.

6. Sea Life London Aquarium

A thing to do in London that is very popular with children is a trip to the London Aquarium, one of the largest in Europe.

You get to see over 400 species, including penguins, 12 types of sharks and pirate fish.

The aquarium is right next to the London Eye and the London Dungeons.

7. Thames River Cruise

Another thing to do in London that is popular for the whole family is a boat trip on the Thames.

I have been on the trip myself several times and used a company called City Cruises.

You can get on the boat right next to the London Eye and sail out to the Tower of London or Greenwich. It is quite a pleasant trip, where you experience another, calmer side of London.

8. Harry Potter World

Harry Potter and London go hand in hand. So if you’re a fan of Harry Potter and coming to London, there’s one thing you can not miss: The Harry Potter World.

Harry Potter World is actually called Harry Potter Studios and is not located in London itself, but in the small town of Leavesden close to Watford about 20 miles north of central London.

I’ve been to the Harry Potter World a couple of times, and when I had my travel agency, I think it was the most asked-for thing to do in London – especially for families travelling to London with kids.

And I understand why because the Harry Potter World is undoubtedly one of the best theme parks in all of Europe and definitely in the United Kingdom.

If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you need to go!

Beware that Harry Potter World in London is one of the most-visited attractions in the country, and you must book your ticket in advance. And they will sell out!

So as soon as you’ve got your flights booked you should book your tickets to the Harry Potter World.

Numerous tours from London include bus transportation from central London to the Studios, so you don’t need to think about getting there by train or shuttle bus.

9. Madame Tussauds

The ever-popular wax museum in London is another good bet for an attraction that is particularly popular with children in London.

You probably know a little about Madame Tussauds; this is where you can see wax dolls that resemble the famous people they are supposed to represent.

This is one of the most well-known things to do in London, but certainly, also one that is worth the visit and all the money.

For God’s sake, buy a ticket from home – the queue for Madame Tussauds in London is long if you haven’t purchased a ticket in advance.

If you have planned a tour of Europe, you can also visit Madame Tussauds when you are sightseeing in Berlin.

10. Historical Pub Walking Tour

Is there anything better than a good beer in a London pub?

I can’t imagine what it would be anyway. I recently came across a guided pub walking tour in London, which I will be doing when I return to the English capital again.

It is not a classic pub crawl, where heavy drinking is on the schedule, but rather a guided tour where you pass several legendary pubs and at the same time learn a great deal about London’s history from your guide.

I haven’t tried it, but everyone seems extremely happy with their tour, which follows the footsteps of Dickens and other famous London folk.

11. The London Dungeon

Right next to the London Eye is another popular place in London – especially for children. It is the London Dungeon.

The London Dungeon is an interactive… “museum” might not be the right word to use here, but imagine an old-fashioned “haunted house” like you would see in fairs in the past (maybe they still exist?), where you go through a setup with lots of surprises.

In other words, you go through a setup where there are 20 actors playing pranks on you

12. British Museum

The British Museum is a place in London that cannot be recommended enough – for all age groups. However, I also know that it is not necessarily a trip to a museum that comes first when you book your trip to London

So this one might be more for you who have a few hours to spare on your 2nd or 3rd trip to London (after all, few people can stay away once they’ve been).

The British Museum is free and contains so many unique artefacts that it is impossible to outline the most important ones here. But I can say that it’s at the British Museum if you want to see the Rosetta Stone.

The building is an experience in itself, and the museum is close to Oxford Street, where most travellers will find themselves when coming to London.

So consider stopping by if you’re in the area.

13. Churchill War Rooms

Learn about life in London during World War II with a tour of the Churchill War Rooms, located close to 10 Downing Street, where the British Prime Minister holds court – and did so during the war.

In the Churchill War Rooms, you descend into the original bunker where Sir Winston Churchill and his government operated during the war.

As you know, London was subjected to heavy bombardment by the Germans, so a proper bunker system was needed – and it has been preserved and is now open to tourists.

As well as going down to the Churchill War Rooms, several guided tours take you past some of the most important monuments and sites in Westminster, so it’s worth considering if you want to feel the history in London.

14. Palace of Westminster & Big Ben

The Palace of Westminster is the home of the British Parliament, so if you’ve ever seen a single film about London or a picture (and you have if you’re reading this guide), you’ll know the building.

This is also where we find the iconic Big Ben, so it is naturally an attraction that everyone should stop by when travelling to London.

But did you know that it is possible to enter and experience the Houses of Parliament itself? It is, but only on particular dates.

15. Westminster Abbey

Right next to the Palace of Westminster (and still close to the Churchill War Rooms) is Westminster Abbey, arguably one of London’s most iconic buildings.

The church was built way back between 1045 and 1050, which also emphasises how old the city of London is.

It is in Westminster Abbey that the British royal family its most significant events, and most recently, the church hosted Queen Elizabeth II‘s funeral in 2022.

Since 1066 (!) Westminster Abbey has been the place for the coronation of the following British monarch.

Undoubtedly one of the essential sights in London if you are interested in the British royal family.

16. Camden Market

There are numerous exciting markets in London, but Camden Market is truly an experience.

If you’ve ever felt different and not like the others, then there’s a good chance Camden Market is for you.

The whole of Camden Town exudes culture and is, in particular, an area of ​​London with solid roots in the world of music. This is where all the cool Britpop bands hung out in the 90s, and Amy Winehouse lived here before her tragic death.

At Camden Market, you can buy everything from classic souvenir t-shirts to vintage clothes, paintings and psychedelic clothes for the next techno rave.

There is something for everyone and just coming off the tube at Camden Town Station and walking up to the market is an experience.

The market is open every day of the week, but of course, there are the most people on Saturday and Sunday, so consider going up here on a weekday if you’re not just in London for a weekend trip.

17. Regent’s Canal Waterbus from Camden to Little Venice

You might have thought that the Thames was the only option for a boat trip in London?

A boat trip on the Thames is, of course, one of the best ways to see many of London’s central sights, but if you want to get under the skin of the British capital and experience the city from one of the smaller canals, consider taking a trip from Camden to Little Venice.

The iconic, old-school boats sail from the canal next to Camden Market and take you via Regent’s Canal past London Zoo to Little Venice in West London (close to Paddington, where many choose to stay in London).

An extremely cosy and cheap boat trip that gives you a new look at London.

18. Portobello Market and Notting Hill

Notting Hill rings a bell for many – at least if you’ve seen the famous movie with Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts of the same name.

Notting Hill is an area in West London worth a visit with its beautiful, classic, colourful houses and cosy shops.

But if you want to get total value for money, consider visiting Notting Hill on Saturdays for Portobello Road Market.

It is a markedly different market to so many others in London – here, the entire Portobello Road is blocked off, and instead of cars, you will find a long line of stalls with everything from antiques to fresh fruit, vintage clothes and much more.

There is a rather festive atmosphere in the area, where there are plenty of restaurants, pubs and cafes if you are not into street food from one of the many stalls.

You can take the tube to Notting Hill Gate (on the Central Line) and follow the flow of people, then a few minutes later, you enter Portobello Road.

19. Borough Market

If I have to name one food market in London that you must visit, then it has to be Borough Market, which is located on the south bank of the Thames close to, among other things, London Bridge and Shakespeare’s Globe.

There has been a market in the square as far back as the 13th century, so this is yet another indication of how many historical experiences and sights London offers below the surface.

You can now get street food, all kinds of cheeses, locally produced fruit and vegetables and craft drinks at the market.

I love Borough Market but have previously made the mistake of timing my visit badly – the market is not open for dinner.

It is open from 10-17 except for Saturday (the big day), when it is open from 9-17, and on Sunday, it is only from 10-15.

If you want the whole experience, you can take advantage of a guided food tour at Borough Market.

20. St Paul’s Cathedral

One of London’s most iconic buildings is undoubtedly St Paul’s Cathedral in the City of London.

I love walking across the Millennium Bridge from the south side of the Thames, where you stare right into the cathedral – it’s stunning.

St Paul’s is known for, among other things being the place where Prince Charles (now King Charles) and Princess Diana were married.

St Paul’s is a massive cathedral that, luckily, is open to the public for a ticket. And, of course, you can get right up to the top and enjoy a phenomenal view of the City of London.

21. Tate Modern

On the other side of the Thames and at the start of the Millennium Bridge, we find the Tate Modern, one of Europe’s most impressive art museums.

I am not that interested in art, so it took me many trips to London before I finally got inside the doors of Tate Modern.

Although I’m not into art, I was impressed by Tate Modern, so I think if you’re even the slightest bit interested in art, you could spend a whole day here.

Tate Modern is free to visit, but there may be exhibitions that require a separate ticket.

You can easily combine St Paul’s, Tate Modern and Borough Market – all three attractions are very close.

22. Skygarden

Skygarden is something as rare as a free thing to do in London

In other words, Skygarden is a free public garden in London, where you only need to book a ticket for your visit in advance.

And let it be said right away – if you have already bought the plane tickets to London, you better make sure you book a ticket to the Skygarden because they always sell out.

The Skygarden is located at the top of a building in the London financial district, City of London, called the Walkie-Talkie building, and we must admit that it is not the prettiest building from the outside.

But we can’t care too much about that, because the view up from the Skygarden is fantastic. We are right between the Tower of London and St Paul’s, but we can see most of central London from up here.

There is a restaurant in Skygarden that requires booking, but for everyone with a regular ticket, there is also a little bar that sells snacks, coffee and drinks.

There is something very cool about having a pint with this beautiful view of London – and (the entrance) is free!

So if you’re looking for a free rooftop bar in London, this is a good option.

Remember to book your ticket online in advance.

23. Day trip from London to Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath

I know many of us will travel to London again and again. So many of us may have passed by the London Eye, Big Ben and Trafalgar Square a few times.

So how about taking a day trip from London and experiencing some of England’s most iconic sights?

One of the most popular day trips from London goes to Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath.

There are, of course, enough sights and experiences in London for many trips, but I still want to share the idea, as many forget there is more to see in the south of England than just London.

Although London is amazing

24. Hackney City Farm

Let’s get back to London and go straight to one of the hidden gems in East London: Hackney City Farm.

As the name suggests, it is a small city farm in the middle of London.

I’ve been here several times and love showing the place to new people who never quite understand what I’m talking about until they enter the farm and see everything from a giant pig to goats and donkeys.

It’s free to enter, but I recommend donating a bit to the place or stopping by their excellent cafe.

A great experience in Hackney, where in the area I can also recommend stopping by Broadway Market on Saturdays, where there is a street market with delicious street food and all kinds of goodies.

25. Brick Lane and Shoreditch in the East End

We stay in the East End and slip a little south of Hackney City Farm to Brick Lane in the Shoreditch area, which has been a bit of a hipster hotspot in London for many years.

Brick Lane is also a mecca for those who love vintage shopping and know exactly what they are looking for.

It’s actually kind of funny about Brick Lane because the area is a traditionally poor area of ​​East London, full of Indian restaurants and old houses. Still, in the early 00s, the artists moved in and transformed the space into what it is today.

You can talk about gentrification here, but there is no doubt that if you want to experience one of the trendiest streets in London, you must go to Brick Lane.

If you are interested in music, remember to make your way past the enormous Rough Trade Records shop, and if you want to experience a classic, old-school East End pub, then you must go for a drink in The Pride of Spitalfields.

Brick Lane is in the heart of London’s notorious East End, so if you want to seek out famous places from the stories of Jack the Ripper, this is the place too.

26. Natural History Museum and Science Museum

The Natural History Museum and the Science Museum are two different museums. Still, they are located right next to each other in South Kensington, just south of Hyde Park and close to the iconic Harrods shopping centre.

Therefore, it might make good sense to make your way past both museums when you are in the area anyway.

Both museums are incredibly child-friendly, so if you travel to London with children, you should consider visiting these museums.

At the Natural History Museum, you will find, among other things, a giant skeleton of a dinosaur, which is always popular with both children and adults.

Entrance to both museums is free, but you must book a ticket online.

Go to the Natural History Museum – go to the Science Museum.

27. Afternoon Tea

No one loves tea as much as the British, so when you travel to the UK, you must try the iconic concept: afternoon tea.

However, be aware that you may well skip lunch or eat a very light lunch before going to afternoon tea: you get significantly more than just a cup of tea and a small cookie.

Afternoon tea is an exceptional and delicious experience, where you get tea (or coffee, if you like), small sandwiches and all kinds of delicious cakes.

I would recommend booking a table, as afternoon tea is trendy in London, so good places are in demand.

You can also take the experience up a level and book either an afternoon tea tour with a sightseeing bus or a river cruise on the Thames with afternoon tea.

28. The Shard: London’s Iconic Skyline Jewel

Standing tall at 309.6 meters, The Shard isn’t just a skyscraper; it’s an emblem of modern London. Contrary to popular belief: The Harry Potter World in London is actually located in Leavesden, which is a small city outside of Watford – well North of London.

Traveling to the studios from London is straightforward. Several tours not only provide entry to the studios but also include transportation from central London straight to the enchanting realms of Harry Potter.

As I said in the video above, this was one of my favourite things to see in the Harry Potter Studios. This wasn’t there when I visited for the first time in 2018, so it’s also nice to see that they keep doing new things in the studios.

The whole studio tour is designed so you can rock up and enjoy the experience, but here are a few of my top tips for making your visit even better.

Arrive Early

The enchantment starts early, and so should you. The studios get bustling as the day progresses, especially on weekends and holidays. Arriving early lets you roam the magical realms with more breathing space, soaking in the details before the crowds pour in.

Book in Advance

The demand for a peek into Harry Potter’s world is high, and tickets tend to vanish quicker than a Golden Snitch. Booking well in advance not only ensures your entry but also allows you to pick a favorable time slot.

I repeat: tickets to Harry Potter World are always sold out!

Dress Comfortably

With so much to explore, comfortable attire is your best friend. Opt for comfy shoes as the cobbled streets of Diagon Alley and the vast expanses of the studio tour beckon for a lot of walking. Dressing in layers is wise too, as the English weather can be quite unpredictable.

There’s also an outdoor exhibition midway through the tour where you can see the knight bus and a few other things from the movies, so remember to bring your jacket.

Stay Hydrated and Fueled

With all the exploring, make sure to keep hydrated and grab a bite when needed. The studio has several spots to refuel with some magical treats or muggle food.

Seek Out Special Events and Exhibits

Should I stay near the Studios or in London?

Below, I will share my experiences at the hotel.

The short version is that it’s one of the best hotels I’ve stayed at in London, but there are still a couple of areas with room for improvement.

I paid 269 GBP per night (Friday-Sunday) and found that the cheapest online rate was at booking.com.

Check-in – fast and efficient

I arrived at Canopy by Hilton on Friday evening, where I first flew into Gatwick Airport, took the Thameslink train to Blackfriars, and changed to the Circle Line, which quickly took me to Tower Hill, from where you can walk to the hotel in a few minutes.

The hotel is easy to find, as a lot has been done to the exterior decoration.

I entered the lobby, where the check-in desk was right inside the door.

There, I was met by a receptionist who was busy talking on the phone and acknowledged me even though I was the only one in the lobby waiting to check in.

However, another employee came after half a minute and handled the check-in relatively quickly without too many detours – she was polite and quick to sort out the formalities.

I don’t really need all the big smiles and “how are you,” so it was just nice to get it sorted quickly and get to the room.

My Room – neat and spacious, but with one drawback!

I had primarily chosen the hotel because I was looking for a nice hotel close to a tube station (Tower Hill and Aldgate), where the room and breakfast were top-notch.

And it turned out the photos on the booking site didn’t deceive. The rooms at Canopy by Hilton are indeed top-notch.

We all know the feeling of opening the door to the hotel room and being disappointed because the room is significantly smaller than we perceived from the photos.

The opposite happened here at the hotel – the room was larger and neater than I remembered from the photos, so I was really impressed.

The bathroom was also spacious, with a large mirror, and the bath worked impeccably.

I was super happy when I saw that the large TV had Chromecast, as I had planned to spend quite some time on some semi-boring work in the room, and therefore, it was great that I could put on a series on the TV.

However, the Chromecast, unfortunately, did not work.

• But to be fair, I didn’t speak to the hotel about it – maybe they could have helped to fix it.

The worst thing about the room was undoubtedly its air conditioning.

Not because it didn’t work – the room had an excellent temperature, and it didn’t make noise, which I think is almost the standard at hotels here in the UK (noisy aircon).

But it lit up the room at night! Its display is next to the bed, so it was annoying for someone like me, who likes a completely dark room at night.

The room was otherwise completely dark, as the curtains shut well, so it was a bit irritating.

However, it was not so bad that I couldn’t just turn to the other side and sleep well.

But it annoyed me, and therefore, it must be included here in my honest review of Canopy by Hilton London City.

Breakfast – really good without being lavish

As previously mentioned, the choice fell on this hotel, among other things, because its breakfast buffet got excellent reviews.

After all, a good breakfast is essential when you’re on a city break and typically spend a good portion of the day on foot, strutting around and seeing London’s best sights.

The hotel did not disappoint here either!

There was everything I could want to make my own delicious full English breakfast.

You can often judge a hotel’s breakfast by their scrambled eggs, and these were delicious!

There was also a good selection of bread and pastries (including some good bagels), and you could put together your muesli and fruit salad.

The coffee machines had, among other things, flat white and other specialities, so there was more than “just” black coffee and cappuccino.

I love when you can make a to-go cup of coffee too

Really good breakfast!

The area – surprisingly good and close to public transport

If you’ve read my massive guide to where to stay in London, you’ll know that I rarely single out the area north of the Tower of London as a good place to stay.

But maybe I have to change my opinion!

After all, I also had to go out and find some dinner upon my arrival on Friday evening.

There, I could see on Google Maps that I stayed extremely close to Brick Lane and the Shoreditch area, which I often refer to as the place to be if you are young, love trendy restaurants and generally just like to have lots of choices.

So the area around Canopy by Hilton is actually surprisingly good.

From my room, I had a view of Aldgate Station, which can be reached in 2 minutes from the hotel.

Several tube lines run from here, so when I went to Euston in Central London, I could do it in 10 minutes.

And I also discovered Tower Hill station (already on the journey from Gatwick) was around the corner from the hotel.

Since we had to fly home from Stansted Airport, we could also just walk to Liverpool Street Station, where you take the airport train to Stansted, in about 10 minutes.

So you have excellent options to get around the city and to the more well-known sights in London.

There are several pubs, small restaurants and cafes within a few minutes’ walk.

I went to Som Saa, a Thai restaurant about 10 minutes away – it was super good and had really lovely servers.

I also ate at Yuu Kitchen, which was also quite good but also really expensive.

It was too expensive for how good it was, come to think of it.

We paid £86 for six small share dishes and two beers…

But the area may not be the most obvious place to stay for those travelling to London for sightseeing, but if you are fresh to discover something new, it might be a bit exciting to try staying here.

What could the hotel do better?

Of course, we must also include the less positive things in hotel reviews. However, it’s hard to find major things to point a finger at here at Canopy by Hilton.

There was an issue with the Chromecast and the bright air conditioning display. The staff were neither super nice nor unpleasant – they were just there

There was also no minibar in the room, although there was a refrigerator. I rarely use it, but one might expect it from a 5-star hotel.

On the other hand, you could fill a water carafe out in the hallway, where there was a ‘station’ with cold water – I was thrilled with this, both for water in the room, and so I could fill my water bottle in the morning before heading out in London.

Is Canopy by Hilton a good place to stay in London?

Yes, definitely.

I’ve tried to think of more negatives about the hotel because I want to provide the complete picture, but I can’t.

This must mean that this is genuinely a good hotel in London.

I give it 5/6 stars and would consider staying here again; the hotel and the area surprised me very positively.

What can you expect at Harry Potter Studios?

So, what’s it all about? Well, imagine stepping right into the pages of J.K. Rowling’s books or onto the sets of the films. 

That’s what visiting the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London – The Making of Harry Potter (the studio’s proper name) feels like.

• By the way – it’s not in central London but in Leavesden, near Watford.

See everything from Diagon Alley to Gringotts and Hogwarts

This place is huge, packed with real sets, costumes, and props used in the Harry Potter films.

Think of standing in the iconic Great Hall, sneaking down Diagon Alley, and even gawking at the doors of Gringotts Wizarding Bank. It’s all there, and it’s all real.

And it’s not just about looking. This place lets you get hands-on with the magic, too.

You can hop aboard the Hogwarts Express at a recreated Platform 9¾ – they’ve even got a luggage trolley disappearing into the wall. And if you’ve ever fancied a spin in the Weasley’s flying car, this is your chance!

One of the most incredible things about the studios is how it peels back the curtain on filmmaking. 

Ever wondered how they made Dobby look so lifelike or how they built those complex sets?

The Creature Effects and Art Department sections have you covered, showing off the incredible craftsmanship and detailing that went into creating Harry’s world.

Changing exhibits yearly

Moreover, the studios keep things fresh with changing exhibits and events throughout the year.

Imagine seeing the Hogwarts castle model dusted with a wintery coating of snow or exploring the darker side of magic in the ‘Dark Arts’ event.

There’s always something new to see and do.

Whether you’re a die-hard Potterhead, a film buff, or just looking for a day out that’s a bit different, the Harry Potter Studios offers a peek into the magic behind the movies that brought one of our favourite wizarding worlds to life. 

And honestly, who could resist that?

I’m a massive Harry Potter fan, so I had to book the fully guided tour that takes you behind the scenes in the Harry Potter Studios.

My review of the fully guided Studio tour

While browsing GetYourGuide, I chanced upon tickets for a guided tour at Harry Potter Studios, scheduled for a week later. As a long-time fan, I couldn’t resist.

I swiftly secured my ticket, booked a flight to London and arranged a night’s stay at The Phoenix – a charming hotel in the Paddington/Bayswater area of London.

With that, I was set for my magical escapade.

Fast travel by train from London

Our rendezvous point was at Euston Station, underneath the grand ‘Arrivals‘ board.

The guide, easy to spot with his tour flag, briefed us that we had about 15 minutes before the train departure – just enough time for a coffee and an Irn-Bru (the drink I’m still craving daily after living in Scotland). 

The journey from Euston to Watford Junction was a swift 20 minutes.

Once there, our guide led us to a shuttle bus for a brief 10-15 minute drive to the studios, located amid the tranquil countryside.

Arriving at Harry Potter Studios

Though the exterior of the Harry Potter Studios may not be particularly awe-inspiring, what lies inside is nothing short of spectacular.

Upon disembarking from the shuttle, our second guide led us into the massive box-like building.

Once inside, each visitor was given a headset, a brilliant feature ensuring everyone could clearly hear the guide, regardless of their proximity.

Behind the scenes in Harry Potter World

As we stepped into the studios, we were greeted by the splendid sight of the Great Hall.

As an ardent fan who has read each book at least ten times and sought every Harry Potter experience in London, and Edinburgh I was thoroughly impressed by the wealth of knowledge our guide offered.

Our guide expertly navigated the roped-off boundaries separating us from the numerous sets, props, and costumes, providing a depth of insight and engaging stories about the actors, the Harry Potter universe, and the exhibits.

The opportunity to experience such intimacy with the magic behind the films validates the cost of the ‘luxury tour’.

This is the best Harry Potter Experience in London

At the tour’s conclusion, the guide offered to escort anyone who wished to revisit the studios back to the entrance, bypassing the queue.

However, I opted to return to London – travelling alone, waking up incredibly early, and the shuttle back seemed the best choice with a busy day at the office ahead.

There’s no doubt about it: if you’re a superfan of Harry Potter then this fully guided tour is a must and in my opinion one of the best things to do in London.
