Where should you stay in Sorrento if you want to explore the town, visit Capri and perhaps take a trip to Pompeii? I would start by looking around the centre and the railway station. But if sea views and time at the hotel matter more, there are other locations worth considering.
Much of Sorrento sits high above the water, so two hotels that look close together on a map can involve very different walks. Here I’ll take you through the centre, the coast around the two marinas and neighbouring Sant’Agnello. You’ll find specific hotels and advice on choosing between easy connections, sea views and a little more distance from the busiest tourist streets.

- Sant’Agnello – best for a quieter base and potential hotel value.

1. Sorrento town centre – best for a first visit and day trips 🍋
- Distance to the centre: Around Piazza Tasso, Corso Italia and Old Town, typically within about 800 metres of the square.
- Public transport: Trains and buses leave from the station; reaching the port involves walking downhill, a bus or a lift connection, depending on your route.
- From the airport: Allow roughly 75–120 minutes from Naples Airport by car or airport bus, with longer journeys possible in traffic and extra time for the final walk.
- Price level: €€–€€€; central locations are particularly sought after in the warmer months.
- Practical advice: Keep an eye on luggage on trains and at stations. Check traffic noise and access to hotels in pedestrian streets.
Sorrento town centre is the most practical base if you want to use the town to explore the region. Around Piazza Tasso, you have restaurants and little streets close by, while the station is within a manageable walk. That makes a real difference on mornings when you want to leave early without waiting for a hotel shuttle first.
I would focus on the area between Piazza Tasso, Old Town and the station. Those three points give you a good balance between evenings in town and connections elsewhere. A hotel close to Corso Italia is easy to find, but a side street may be a nicer place to sleep if you don’t need traffic outside the window.

For Pompeii, check the rail services and Campania Express information from EAV. Plan the visit itself using Pompeii’s official visitor information, too, so you know which entrance you need. A central hotel makes the logistics easier, but it doesn’t guarantee a quick or uncrowded excursion in high season.
The same applies to boat trips. The port sits below the central town, and you need to allow time to get down there even if the distance looks short. It’s much easier to work out your route in advance than to discover, ticket in hand, that you’ve chosen the wrong set of steps.
Sorrento is on the Sorrentine Peninsula, overlooking the Bay of Naples, rather than on the Amalfi Coast itself. Sorrento can still make a useful base, but the distinction matters when you picture the location of your hotel.
I would choose the centre for first-time visitors and anyone who likes eating out every evening. You may not get a sea view from your room, but you get an easy base to use. For your arrival, check the transport information on the official Naples Airport website, then plan the final leg to the hotel. Grand Hotel Excelsior Vittoria – luxury
A classic luxury hotel by Piazza Tasso, combining a very central location with a special hotel stay. It’s worth considering if you want to prioritise both the hotel experience and Sorrento’s restaurants without compromising on location.
I would look at this for a trip with time to enjoy the property as well as explore the town. Compare the room categories carefully, particularly if a certain view is part of what makes the stay special for you.

Hotel Antiche Mura – upper mid-range
A hotel close to Piazza Tasso that’s worth a look for a holiday combining day trips with evenings in town. The location makes the station convenient without requiring you to stay directly beside it.
For a first visit, that balance can be more useful than a distant hotel with a spectacular view. I would compare it if you expect to spend most days out and want an uncomplicated return in the evening.

Ulisse Deluxe Hostel – budget to mid-range
The name may sound like a traditional backpacker hostel, but private rooms are available too. It’s in the western part of the central town, making it relevant if you want a simpler base and don’t mind a slightly longer walk to the station.
Check the room type you’re booking rather than judging the property by its name. It can be a useful option when location and a private room matter more than a large luxury hotel.

2. The coast around Marina Grande and Marina Piccola – best for sea views and a waterfront setting ⛵
- Distance to the centre: The two marinas are separate places below the town, roughly 0.5–1.5 km from Piazza Tasso, with a change in elevation.
- Public transport: Local buses and walking; Marina Piccola is the ferry port, while Marina Grande is mainly associated with fishing boats and restaurants.
- From the airport: Allow roughly 80–130 minutes from Naples Airport by car, including the final approach; public transport usually requires another connection from the centre.
- Price level: €€–€€€; sea views and waterfront locations often cost more.
- Practical advice: Check steps, lift access and the last bus. Be aware of boat movements around the harbours.
If you picture waking up near the water and having dinner with a view of boats, the coast is worth exploring. You do need to distinguish between Marina Grande and Marina Piccola, though. The names don’t make it obvious: Marina Piccola is the port used for many ferry departures, while Marina Grande has fishing boats and restaurants.
I’ve grouped them here because both offer alternatives to staying up in the centre, but they are not one continuous waterfront promenade. The map shows Marina Grande, so check each hotel’s position separately. Some of the grander hotels sit on the cliff above, and a sea view does not mean your room is at beach level.

Marina Grande is particularly appealing for waterfront dinners and a maritime atmosphere. At Marina Piccola, boat connections are a more important reason to stay. Alilauro provides information on its Naples–Sorrento route, but departures and options depend on schedules and sea conditions. Don’t choose a hotel around an unverified assumption about a particular ferry.
The main compromise is the climb back to the rest of town. A walk uphill after dinner can be lovely for some people and a daily annoyance for others. Check whether your hotel has convenient lift access or transport, along with the operating hours. This is especially relevant with children, heavy luggage or reduced mobility.
I would choose the coast for couples and for a holiday where views and relaxed breaks matter as much as excursions. If you’ll be catching an early train or bus almost every morning, the centre is easier. On a longer trip, a few nights by the water can provide a pleasant change of pace after busy days in Naples and at the sights.

Bellevue Syrene – clifftop luxury
An exclusive hotel high above the water, suited to a holiday where the view and the stay itself are a big part of the experience. It sits on the coastal edge rather than down in Marina Grande’s streets, so keep that distinction in mind.
I would consider it for a special stay with time to enjoy the hotel. Check the exact room category and access to the water rather than assuming every part of the property is at sea level.

Marina Piccola 73 – upper mid-range by the ferry port
A smaller property down at Marina Piccola, where being close to the harbour is a clear advantage. It’s a good option if you love being near the water and accept that the rest of Sorrento is above you.
The location is especially relevant if the waterfront setting matters more than a short walk to the railway station. Work out your route uphill before booking so it suits your daily plans.

Hotel Del Mare – mid-range near Marina Grande
A hotel by Marina Grande, worth considering if you want the restaurants and fishing harbour nearby. Here, the waterside location matters more than proximity to the railway station, making it better suited to a slower stay.
I would compare it if you expect to spend relaxed evenings around the marina. For frequent early departures by train, weigh the extra walk or local transport against the appeal of staying here.

3. Sant’Agnello – best for a quieter base and potential hotel value 🌿
- Distance to the centre: A separate neighbouring town east of Sorrento, roughly 2–3.5 km from Piazza Tasso depending on your hotel.
- Public transport: Its own station and buses; coastal and hillside hotels may be some distance from the station.
- From the airport: Roughly 70–110 minutes from Naples Airport by car; an airport bus may be useful depending on stops and the hotel address.
- Price level: €€–€€€; better value is possible, but the luxury coastal hotels are not budget options.
- Practical advice: Pay attention to traffic and pavements. Check the actual walking route to the station and any hotel transport.
Sant’Agnello is a good alternative if you want a little distance from Sorrento’s busiest tourist streets. It’s a separate neighbouring town closely connected to Sorrento, and a hotel here may offer more peace or more for your money. You still need to choose the address carefully: there are substantial differences within the area.
Around the station, using trains and buses is easier, while the coast has several hotels with views. Further up the hills, hotels may have a beautiful setting, but you become more dependent on transport. I would decide which of these three types of stay you want before comparing room prices across the whole area.

Sant’Agnello works well for a holiday mixing excursions with days that have no fixed programme. You can go into Sorrento for dinner without staying in the busiest streets. Getting home requires more planning, though, if the hotel is far from the station or up a steep access road.
Look closely at any hotel shuttle and its timetable. A bus a few times a day is not the same as transport whenever you want to head out. It may work perfectly well, but you need to know whether a late dinner in Sorrento means paying for a taxi back every evening.
I would choose Sant’Agnello for couples and families who find a hotel they genuinely want to spend time in. On a short trip with daily train excursions, I’d prioritise the station over the view. Sorrento’s municipal tourist information is useful for getting your bearings when planning visits from the neighbouring area.

Hotel Mediterraneo Sorrento – luxury
A coastal hotel in Sant’Agnello, well suited to travellers who want to prioritise views and the hotel experience. It makes more sense for a holiday with time to enjoy the property than as the cheapest way to stay close to Sorrento station.
Compare the room categories and the arrangements for getting into Sorrento. The right choice depends on how often you want to leave the hotel as well as what you hope to enjoy while you’re there.

Hotel Cristina – mid-range on the hillside
A hotel on higher ground around the transition between Sorrento and Sant’Agnello. The view is part of the appeal, but check the current transport arrangements into town rather than assuming every journey will be an easy walk.
I would consider it if you’re happy to organise your days around the location. A hillside setting can be lovely, provided it fits your plans for dinners and excursions.

Hotel Angelina – budget to mid-range
A smaller hotel in Sant’Agnello that can be a good option if you want a simpler base rather than a large coastal property. Compare the location with the station and your planned excursions; an easy daily routine can make a saving worthwhile.
It’s worth considering when you expect to spend plenty of time out exploring. As always, compare your actual dates and room requirements rather than assuming one hotel is consistently the cheapest.

Where should you avoid staying in Sorrento?
I wouldn’t book a hotel high in the hills purely for its sea view if you want dinner in Sorrento every evening and won’t have a car. Check the shuttle timetable and the cost of alternative transport. The same applies to properties with Sorrento in their name that are actually in another town further along the peninsula.
If you want a classic holiday with a long sandy beach in front of the hotel, you should also adjust your expectations of Sorrento. The coast is characterised by cliffs, harbours and smaller bathing areas. If you’re arriving by car, choose parking deliberately: a central hotel in a pedestrian street is not automatically the most convenient option.
For a first visit with plenty of day trips, I’d start with Sorrento town centre. The waterfront suits a stay focused on views, while Sant’Agnello can offer a quieter base. Check the route between your hotel, the station and the water before choosing.
