Alicante is more compact than many visitors expect. In the central neighbourhoods, you can walk between the main sights, and the beach is often only a short stroll from your hotel.
That makes Alicante a great choice if you want to combine a city break with time by the sea. The main decision is whether you'd rather have tapas bars and historic streets outside your door, a hotel beside the marina, or a base by the much longer beach at San Juan.
Let's get into the guide: where should you stay in Alicante?
Here are the best areas to stay in Alicante:
- El Barrio (Old Town) – best area for your first visit.
- Postiguet and the Marina – best area for couples and sea views.
- Playa de San Juan – best area for a beach holiday.
El Barrio and Postiguet are close enough to combine on foot. Playa de San Juan is a separate beach area further northeast, so the daily rhythm is different. Airport bus C6 connects the airport with central Alicante; check Aena's airport transport information for current stops and services. The travel times below are approximate and depend on traffic, waiting time and your hotel's address.
1. El Barrio (Old Town) – best area for your first visit ⭐️
- Distance to the centre: In the city centre, with the harbour and Postiguet within walking distance.
- Public transport: Mercado tram station is useful for many addresses; choose your airport bus stop according to the hotel's location.
- From the airport: Allow roughly 25-35 minutes by taxi or 40-60 minutes by C6 bus and on foot.
- Price range: €€-€€€; boutique hotels and central locations can cost more at busy times.
- Safety: Keep an eye on valuables in crowds and check recent reviews for noise from bars.
El Barrio sits against Benacantil hill, with Santa Bárbara Castle above it, and forms part of Alicante's historic heart. The streets are narrow and sometimes cobbled, with pale façades, colourful flowerpots and little squares such as Plaza Santa Cruz and Plaza del Carmen between the tapas bars.
Most of the sights are within easy walking distance. The co-cathedral, MUBAG art museum, harbour and Postiguet Beach are all close by. It's a very practical base if you want to spend a short break exploring without constantly checking transport connections.

Food and nightlife are a big part of the appeal. The streets around Calle Labradores and Calle San Pascual get lively in the evening, with locals and visitors moving between bars. If you sleep lightly, choose carefully: a courtyard-facing room or a quieter lane can make a bigger difference than the neighbourhood name on the booking page.
There are two practical drawbacks to keep in mind. The higher you stay on the hillside, the more slopes and steps you may need to tackle with your luggage. Older buildings may also lack a lift. Check the actual entrance and room access if either of those things matters to you.
Parking is the other consideration. Don't assume you can drive straight to the door in the narrowest streets. If you're hiring a car, choose a hotel with a clear parking arrangement and include the extra charge when comparing the total price. For a short city break, being able to walk to dinner is often more useful than having the car nearby.
Places to Stay in El Barrio (Old Town)
Hospes Amérigo – luxury
Hospes Amérigo occupies a former Dominican convent near the co-cathedral and town hall. The rooftop pool and Bodyna spa make it a strong option if the hotel itself should be part of your holiday, while the historic centre and beach remain close by. The contrast between the older building and contemporary interiors is part of its character. Private parking is limited, so confirm availability and the current charge if you're arriving by car.

Eurostars Pórtico Alicante – upscale city hotel
Eurostars Pórtico Alicante has 50 rooms in restored buildings on Calle Rafael Altamira, right in the historic centre. Its design combines stone and wood, and the rooftop Mira Miralta bar looks towards the castle and town hall square. I'd consider it for a couples' break focused on restaurants and sightseeing. Check the facilities that matter to you rather than assuming every upscale hotel here has a pool; parking is arranged in a nearby public car park.

Les Monges Palace Boutique – smaller boutique option
Les Monges Palace Boutique is in a historic building on Calle San Agustín, just behind the town hall. It offers a more intimate alternative to the large waterfront hotels, with older architectural details and a rooftop terrace. I'd compare the individual room categories carefully, especially if space is important. As with other small hotels in the centre, recent comments about noise and room position are more useful than relying on an overall review score.

2. Postiguet and the Marina – best area for couples and sea views 💎
- Distance to the centre: At the central waterfront, close to the town hall and Old Town.
- Public transport: Central bus stops are convenient; the walk to a tram station depends on which end of the waterfront you stay at.
- From the airport: Allow roughly 20-35 minutes by taxi or 35-60 minutes by airport bus and on foot.
- Price range: €€-€€€; sea-view rooms often carry a premium.
- Safety: Busy around the beach and harbour. Check the room's orientation for road, restaurant and nightlife noise.
The area between Postiguet Beach and the marina is one of Alicante's most recognisable corners. Paseo de Gómiz follows the beach, with the palm-lined Explanada de España nearby. This is where I'd start looking if a view of the water is a major part of the holiday you have in mind.
Postiguet is the city's central beach, below Santa Bárbara Castle and a short walk from the Old Town. You can swim in the morning, wander into the historic streets for lunch and return to the hotel without a tram journey. That easy combination is the area's main strength.

Several of the larger hotels here offer pools, restaurants and other facilities that suit a longer stay or a trip for two. Be precise about the room category: a marina view and an open-sea view are different experiences, and access to certain pools or lounges may depend on the package you book.
The waterfront can also be easier with luggage than the hillier streets of El Barrio. Still, check the walk from the airport bus stop and the hotel's parking arrangements instead of assuming every property has convenient, included parking. The harbour roads remain working streets, not a traffic-free resort.
The drawback is the price. Compare sea-view and other rooms for your actual dates, particularly in July and August. Alicante's Hogueras de San Juan celebrations also bring a very different atmosphere to the centre in June, with festivities and possible changes to access. If you're travelling then, book early and check the programme rather than expecting a quiet beach break.
Places to Stay in Postiguet and the Marina
Meliá Alicante – large waterfront hotel
Meliá Alicante stands between the marina and Postiguet Beach, putting both the water and central Alicante close at hand. It's worth considering if you want a larger hotel with a terrace and the option of spending time by the pool. Pay attention to the distinction between standard bookings and The Level: some facilities belong to the adults-only premium experience. Check whether breakfast and the view you want are included in your chosen rate.

INNSiDE by Meliá Alicante Porta Maris – upscale hotel by the sea
INNSiDE by Meliá Alicante Porta Maris is also between the beach and marina, with terraces, a pool, a gym and restaurant facilities. The main booking decision is the room's outlook: Port View and Sea View are separate categories. If quiet and an uninterrupted sea view matter to you, compare them carefully and read recent room-specific reviews. Spa access and treatments may have their own conditions, so check what's included in your rate.

Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza – central mid-range alternative
Eurostars Mediterranea Plaza overlooks the town hall square, a short walk from Postiguet. Its rooftop terrace and central position make it worth comparing with the larger waterfront hotels if you want easy access to both the beach and historic streets. I'd pay particular attention to room location: a square-facing room can feel quite different from one further away from the evening activity. Ask about quieter options if you're a light sleeper.

3. Playa de San Juan – best area for a beach holiday 🏖️
- Distance to the centre: Around 7 km northeast of central Alicante, depending on the hotel.
- Public transport: TRAM services connect the beach area with Alicante; check the stop and line for your address, particularly L4 and L5.
- From the airport: Allow roughly 25-40 minutes by taxi; travelling via central Alicante by public transport takes longer.
- Price range: €€-€€€; compare beachfront locations with hotels a few streets inland.
- Safety: Check walking routes and evening noise. The atmosphere and available services change with the season.
Playa de San Juan is the choice for a proper beach holiday. The official tourism office lists San Juan Beach itself as roughly 2.9 km long; the sandy coastline continues into neighbouring Muchavista. There's a broad seafront, plenty of sand and a very different feel from compact Postiguet.
Compared with the centre, you'll find wider roads, more space and a stronger holiday atmosphere. Families and visitors staying for longer tend to appreciate being able to organise the day around the beach rather than around sightseeing. In summer, restaurants and cafés give you reasons to stay by the sea into the evening.

The main advantage is room to enjoy the beach. You can walk along the sand, find a place to settle in for the day and return to your hotel without crossing the city. Check exactly how far your chosen hotel is from the seafront: an address in the San Juan area doesn't always mean you're directly beside the sand.
You can reach Alicante by tram, but choose the right line and stop. TRAM d'Alacant's L4 and L5 timetable helps show how the beach area connects with the city; confirm the latest service before travelling. Allow around 30-45 minutes for many trips, plus the walk at either end, rather than planning around a single fixed journey time.
The trade-off is the distance from central Alicante and its historic streets. A tapas evening in El Barrio is perfectly possible, but it involves more planning than when you stay downtown. Outside the main season, the area is quieter and some beach businesses reduce their hours. If the beach isn't the main purpose of the trip, I'd choose El Barrio or Postiguet instead.

Hotel Almirante – hotel close to the beach
Hotel Almirante is on Avenida Niza beside San Juan Beach, with a pool, gardens and the Pocardy restaurant. It's a good place to compare if you want the sea close by without the scale of a large city hotel. The setting suits days split between the beach and the hotel's outdoor spaces. Check whether parking is included and read the payment conditions for your chosen rate before booking.

Port Alicante City & Beach – spacious hotel with pools
Port Alicante City & Beach is a few streets inland from San Juan Beach, so allow a short walk to the sand. It offers a larger hotel setting with pools and places to spend time on site, making it an option for families or couples who want facilities as well as beach access. Compare the total rate with Almirante for your dates: the inland location may offer good value, particularly if you'll use the hotel's facilities.

Hotel Castilla Alicante – more affordable beach-area option
Hotel Castilla Alicante is close to San Juan Beach and tram connections, with an outdoor pool and rooms with terraces. I'd consider it if location matters more than choosing the most luxurious hotel in the area. Compare room types and recent photographs, since different categories can give a different impression. It's a practical candidate for a holiday built around the beach with occasional trips into Alicante, rather than a hotel you choose purely for its design.

Where should you avoid staying in Alicante?
For a short city break, I wouldn't choose an outlying hotel just because the initial room price looks low. Playa de la Albufereta, Cabo de las Huertas and El Campello can suit travellers who want a specific coastal setting, but they are less convenient if you plan to spend most evenings in central Alicante. Check the actual walk to public transport and the journey home before booking.
Likewise, accommodation around Alipark or commercial areas south of Avenida de Elche isn't my first choice for a holiday focused on the Old Town and beach. Those locations may serve a particular purpose, but compare the total cost and time spent travelling with a more central hotel.
If you're visiting during Hogueras de San Juan or in high summer, book well ahead and read the cancellation conditions. Air conditioning, a convenient route back to the hotel and access to a pool can matter a lot in the heat. I'd weigh those practical benefits against the room price rather than assume that the cheapest address gives the best holiday.
