21 Essential Things to Know Before Visiting Paris πŸ‡«πŸ‡·

I've just had a lovely trip to Paris and wanted to share some travel tips I'm sure you'll find helpful - no matter how many times you've been to the French capital.

Having just returned from my fifth trip to Paris, I’ve gathered some crucial insights that could make or break your visit to the City of Light.

From avoiding common tourist traps to discovering hidden gems, here’s everything you need to know before your Paris adventure.

Safety and Scams

1. Be Aware of Aggressive Scammers

Unfortunately, scammers are still a significant issue in Paris, and they’ve become increasingly bold.

While visiting SacrΓ©-CΕ“ur, be particularly vigilant about the “string bracelet” scam.

These scammers will attempt to tie a string around your wrist “for free” and then demand payment. They can be physically aggressive and often work in groups. If approached, be firm in refusing and keep moving.

Local Culture and Etiquette

2. The “Rude French” Myth

Forget everything you’ve heard about rude Parisian waiters.

The key to wonderful service? Simply start every interaction with a friendly “Bonjour” and treat people with basic respect.

Most service staff speak enough English to communicate effectively, especially in tourist areas. In my experience, Parisians are actually quite lovely people.

3. Don’t Skip the Palais Garnier

Those viral TikTok videos aren’t exaggerating – the Palais Garnier is genuinely one of the most breathtaking buildings I’ve ever encountered. The €10 entrance fee to visit this magnificent opera house is absolutely worth it.

4. Explore Beyond the Tourist Spots

The area northwest of SacrΓ©-CΕ“ur in Montmartre is a hidden gem. Instead of getting off at the Abbesses metro station like most tourists, try Lamarck – Caulaincourt station and discover a more authentic side of Paris.

5. Timing is Everything at Montmartre

A word of caution: Montmartre near SacrΓ©-CΕ“ur can be overwhelmingly crowded, even on a random Saturday in November.

For the best experience, arrive before 8 AM. Some of my fondest Paris memories are from early morning visits when the area was peaceful and serene.

6. The Hidden Church Beside the PanthΓ©on

While the PanthΓ©on is impressive, don’t overlook its neighbour, Saint-Γ‰tienne-du-Mont. This smaller church might actually be more stunning than its famous counterpart – and it’s free to enter!

7. Church-Hopping Tip

Make it a habit to peek inside any church you pass in Paris. They’re all architectural masterpieces and usually free to visit.

Transportation Tips

8. Navigating the Metro

Paris’s metro system is excellent and straightforward. Single tickets cost €2.10 and are valid for two hours of travel. While there are supposed to be apps for buying tickets, they can be unreliable – stick to paper tickets to avoid hassle.

9. Airport Transfer Advice

The airport train is budget-friendly but poorly designed for luggage storage. If you’re arriving from overseas with substantial baggage, consider taking a taxi. A Bolt taxi costs around €48 from central Paris to Charles de Gaulle (compared to €11.80 per person for the train).

10. Weather Considerations

Paris can get quite misty, especially in November mornings. If you’re planning to visit the Eiffel Tower’s top floor, check the weather forecast to avoid disappointment.

11. Second Floor vs. Top Floor

From personal experience, the second floor of the Eiffel Tower offers a better experience than the top. It’s less crowded and provides a more comfortable viewing experience.

12. Best Views of the Tower

Remember: you can’t see the Eiffel Tower from inside it! For great views, try the free rooftop terrace at Galeries Lafayette, but arrive early to avoid crowds.

Additional Tips and Changes

13. The Love Lock Bridge Update

If you’re hoping to add a love lock to the famous bridge, unfortunately, this tradition is no longer possible. The bridges now have protective barriers to prevent lock attachment, as the weight was causing structural damage.

Food and Dining

14. Hidden Foodie Paradise

Don’t miss Rue des Martyrs in the Pigalle area – it’s a food lover’s dream. You could spend an entire day sampling coffee, pastries, and local delicacies.

15. Dining Options

While French cuisine is exceptional (even in tourist areas), don’t feel obligated to eat French food for every meal. Paris offers excellent international options, including fantastic Mexican and Asian restaurants.

Neighborhoods and Areas

16. Luxembourg Gardens Area

The neighborhood just north of Jardin du Luxembourg is a perfect blend of local and tourist atmosphere, filled with excellent restaurants, bars, and cafΓ©s.

Consider staying in this area – the Hotel Luxembourg Parc makes an excellent base.

17. Notre-Dame Update

Good news for cathedral enthusiasts: Notre-Dame is set to reopen in December 2024 after the devastating 2019 fire.

18. Don’t Overplan

Paris is massive, and there’s almost too much to see. Rather than trying to cram everything into one visit, leave time for spontaneous exploration. Some of the best experiences come from simply wandering the streets and discovering hidden gems.

19. Morning Activity Tips

Parisians aren’t early risers – most people you’ll see before 10-11 AM are tourists. Use this to your advantage for sightseeing!

20. Dining Schedule

Locals typically eat dinner around 8 PM. Many restaurants close between lunch and dinner, reopening around 7-7:30 PM. Earlier dining times are easier for getting tables.

21. Restaurant Water Etiquette

Unlike many European countries, Paris restaurants provide free tap water with meals – no need to pay for bottled water unless you prefer it.

Remember, Paris is a city that rewards those who take their time to explore and embrace its culture. Don’t rush through the tourist checkpoints – instead, allow yourself to experience the city as the locals do.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, Paris always has something new to discover.
