Best areas to stay in Vienna

The guide to where to stay in Vienna continues below, where I recommend specific hotels in the different areas.

1. Innere Stadt – City Center & the Best Area in Vienna ⭐️

If you understand a bit of German (spoken here in Austria), you might guess that Innere Stadt means ‘Inner City‘; thus, it is the center of Vienna.

Therefore, Innere Stadt is the perfect area to stay for travelers who want to be close to the city’s best sights and experiences.

For instance, in Innere Stadt, you’ll find Stephansdom, a majestic Gothic cathedral offering a fascinating insight into medieval architecture.

Also, Hofburg, the former imperial palace, is a key destination for history enthusiasts, with its museums and the Spanish Riding School.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum (Art Museum) is a must-visit for art lovers who can admire impressive art collections.

The advantage of staying in Innere Stadt is, of course, its central location. It makes it easy for visitors to navigate the city on foot or via public transport.

The area offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to more economical choices, making it accessible for all travelers.

In other words, Innere Stadt is an ideal place to stay to make the most of your trip to Vienna.

Areas & Places to Avoid in Vienna

Vienna is an incredibly safe and secure city to visit as a tourist, so there aren’t any outright dangerous areas.

However, there are still a few areas and places where it doesn’t make sense to wander around – and you definitely should not book a hotel there.

Favoriten, specifically the area around Reumannplatz, can be less recommendable for tourists, especially at night.

Although Vienna is generally safe, there is a tendency for a higher crime rate and a rougher atmosphere after dark in this area.

The area around Wien Ottakring station can sometimes appear rough and less polished compared to the city’s more tourist-friendly neighborhoods.

The metro station Karlsplatz was previously notorious for being a place with drugs and alcohol, but it has been significantly cleaned up, and nowadays, there isn’t anything to be ‘afraid of’ when taking the train to or from Karlsplatz.

If you have any questions about your trip to Vienna or the mentioned areas, please comment below, and I will do my best to help.

Frequently asked questions:

What part of Vienna is best to stay?

For a first-time visitor who wants to be close to major historical sites and enjoy a classic Viennese experience, the Innere Stadt (Inner City) is ideal. It’s home to many of Vienna’s most famous landmarks and offers an authentic feel of its historic charm. For those looking for a trendy, vibrant atmosphere, Mariahilf is an excellent choice, known for its cool coffee bars, artistic vibe, and shopping opportunities.

Where to avoid staying in Vienna?

In Vienna, while there aren’t any areas that are outright dangerous, certain areas are less ideal for tourists, especially if you’re looking for a typical Viennese experience or prioritize being close to major tourist attractions.

It’s advisable to avoid staying in the Favoriten district, particularly around Reumannplatz, which can be less recommendable for tourists, especially at night due to a slightly higher crime rate and a rougher atmosphere after dark.

Similarly, the area around Wien Ottakring station might appear less polished and a bit rougher compared to the more tourist-friendly neighborhoods. These areas, while part of Vienna’s diverse urban tapestry, might not offer the quintessential Vienna experience that many travelers seek.

How long should I stay in Vienna?

Three days is a reasonable amount of time to explore Vienna. This duration allows you to visit the main attractions and also experience a bit of the local life. In three days, you can comfortably tour vital historic sites, such as the Hofburg Palace, Schönbrunn Palace, and St. Stephen’s Cathedral, while also allowing time to wander through the charming streets, enjoy Viennese cafes, and perhaps catch a performance at the opera or a concert.

This period also allows you to explore a few of the city’s diverse neighborhoods, each offering a unique glimpse into the life of Vienna. While a more extended stay would enable a deeper exploration, three days in Vienna strikes a nice balance between sightseeing and soaking up the city’s atmosphere.
