Let’s jump right into the guide.

Best areas in Sicily

best areas and places to stay in Sicily

1. Taormina – where to stay for luxury & beautiful surroundings ⭐️

Taormina is a town that evokes feelings of warmth and excitement for everyone who has been there.

It is a true gem on Sicily’s east coast, offering stunning views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, one of Sicily’s best-known attractions, from every corner.

taormina, best place to stay in Siciliy for luxury and beautiful surroundings

One of the reasons I always recommend Taormina as a base in Sicily is its fantastic historical sites and highly cosy atmosphere.

The town features a well-preserved ancient Greek theatre, the fascinating archaeological park, Isola Bella, and the medieval Castello di Taormina – all must-sees.

Check out the best hotels in Taormina here.

Taormina is a charming town with narrow, cobblestone streets filled with small shops and cosy cafés. Here, you can explore, discover local treasures, and enjoy an authentic Italian espresso.

When hunger strikes, visit the local restaurants and indulge in delicious Sicilian dishes, which I adore.

And of course, there are beaches! Taormina is surrounded by crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun.

Spiaggia di Isola Bella and Lido La Pigna are both beaches close to Taormina town.

It should be noted that if you’re looking for the best beaches in Sicily, Taormina isn’t the place to stay – I’ll cover other areas with better beaches later in this guide.

You should stay in Taormina for its beautiful town, cosy streets, cafés, and restaurants on every corner, and a unique, welcoming atmosphere.

  • Stunning views of the coast and the Ionian Sea
  • Ancient Greek theatre and other historical attractions
  • Lively cafés and shops in the charming old town

So, if you also watched White Lotus season 2, you already know Taormina – it was at the Four Seasons hotel in Taormina where the series was filmed.

The hotel is also called San Domenico Palace.

This lively and vibrant city lies at the foot of Mount Etna and is the perfect base for experiencing some of the best Sicily offers.

catania, one of the best cities in Sicily
The city of Catania and Mount Etna

One of the reasons I always recommend Catania is its unique cultural and historical heritage. The city’s Baroque architecture, such as the iconic Piazza del Duomo and the cathedral, leaves a strong impression.

It’s a great experience to wander through the city’s lively streets and discover new things, from local markets to small art galleries.

Check out the best hotels in Catania here.

Catania’s location near Etna is a big bonus for nature lovers like me. You can go hiking, take guided tours, and even climb the volcano if you’re adventurous.

Moreover, Catania’s coastline is a treasure trove of beautiful beaches where you can enjoy the sun and the azure sea.

So if you’re looking for a combination of exciting city life but with the opportunity to hit the beach without renting a car, Catania is a great place to stay in Sicily.

4. Palermo – stay in Sicily’s vibrant capital (near the best beach in Sicily)

Palermo, the vibrant capital of Sicily, is an excellent place to stay if you’re looking for a genuine city atmosphere in Sicily.

Palermo, one of the best places to stay in Sicily

Palermo is located on the island’s northwest coast and offers a beautiful mix of culture, history, and gastronomy.

I’m excited about Palermo because of its impressive architecture and countless historical sites. The city is home to Palazzo dei Normanni, an impressive royal palace that is an absolute must-see.

The Palermo Cathedral and many churches and palaces in the Arab-Norman style will make you feel like you’re stepping into another time.

Check out the best hotels in Palermo here.

Palermo is a true mecca for food lovers. The city is famous for its colourful food markets, such as Ballarò and Vucciria, where you can find everything from fresh produce to local delicacies and street food.

And then there’s the vibrant nightlife! Palermo has a wealth of bars, clubs, and restaurants where you can enjoy an aperitivo, listen to live music or dance the night away.

The city is full of energy, and there’s always something to do, no matter what time of year you visit.

Palermo street

It’s primarily a good idea to stay in Palermo if you’re travelling to Sicily outside the high season.

I wouldn’t choose to stay in the city centre if I travelled to Sicily in July, as it can get sweltering.

You’d probably prefer to be closer to some beaches – or stay in the northern part of Palermo (in the city/district of Mondello), where you’ll find Mondello Beach, one of the most beautiful in Sicily.

To me, Palermo embodies a genuine Sicilian experience. When you stay in this fascinating city, you’ll have an unforgettable holiday combining culture, history, food, and celebration in a beautiful, vibrant atmosphere.

  • Sicily’s vibrant capital with culture and nightlife
  • Impressive architecture and museums, such as Palazzo dei Normanni
  • Fantastic food markets and authentic Sicilian dishes

I hope this guide on where to stay in Sicily has helped you and that you’re now ready for your trip to the Italian island.

If you have any questions about your upcoming trip, please feel free to comment below.

Here are some frequently asked questions about Sicily:

Where are the best beaches in Sicily?

Sicily has many beautiful beaches, ranging from white sandy shores to rocky coves and dramatic cliff coastlines. Here is a list of some of the best beaches in Sicily, where you can enjoy the sun, sea, and stunning scenery:

1. San Vito Lo Capo: Located on Sicily’s northwestern coast, this beach is known for its crystal-clear water and soft white sand. San Vito Lo Capo is perfect for families and those seeking a relaxing beach experience.

2. Mondello: Near Palermo, you’ll find Mondello, a famous beach with fine white sand and turquoise-blue water. Mondello is a favourite among locals and tourists and offers a lively atmosphere.

3. Isola Bella: This small pebble beach, also known as “The Pearl of the Ionian Sea”, is in Taormina and is renowned for its beautiful scenery and crystal-clear water. The beach is surrounded by lush hills and connected by a narrow sandbar to a small island.

4. Scala dei Turchi: Located near Agrigento, this dramatic white limestone cliff and beach is a unique and spectacular sight. Scala dei Turchi is perfect for those seeking a different beach experience and the opportunity to explore the magnificent landscape.

5. Calamosche: This secluded beach within the Vendicari Nature Reserve in Southeast Sicily is known for its crystal-clear water and undisturbed atmosphere. Calamosche is ideal for those seeking peace and a beach experience close to nature.

When is the best time to visit Sicily?

The best time to visit Sicily depends on your preferences and what you want to experience on the island. Generally, spring and autumn are the most popular times to visit Sicily due to the mild climate and fewer tourists compared to the summer months.
Here’s an overview of what you can expect throughout the year:

Spring (March to June): Spring is a fantastic time to visit Sicily, as the weather is pleasant and warm, with daytime temperatures ranging from 15-25°C. Blooming plants and lush landscapes make this an ideal time for hiking and sightseeing. Spring is also an excellent time to avoid the large tourist crowds that arrive during the summer months.

Summer (June to September): Summers in Sicily are hot and sunny, with daytime temperatures often reaching over 30°C. This is the most popular time for sun and beach lovers to visit the island. However, note that tourist numbers are higher during this period, and some places can become very busy. If you don’t mind the heat and crowds, summer is a great time to enjoy Sicily’s beaches and festivities.

Autumn (September to November): Autumn is another ideal time to visit Sicily, as the weather is still warm and pleasant, with daytime temperatures ranging from 20-25°C. The colours of the landscape change, and vineyards are harvested, making this a great time for wine tasting and culinary experiences. Like spring, autumn is an excellent time to avoid the largest tourist crowds.

Winter (December to February): Winters in Sicily are mild compared to most of Europe, with daytime temperatures ranging from 10-15°C. Although this is not the best time for beach activities, it is a great time to explore the island’s historical sites, culture and cuisine without large crowds. Winter is also a nice time to visit Mount Etna to experience snow and possibly even skiing.

All in all, spring and autumn are generally the best times to visit Sicily to make the most of the island’s natural beauty, culture and less busy attractions.

Which areas to avoid in Sicily?

Sicily is an incredible island with so much to see and do. But just like any other destination, there are a few spots you might want to steer clear of during your visit. Though, don’t stress too much – most areas are lovely and safe. Here’s a quick heads-up:

1. Some urban neighbourhoods: In cities like Palermo and Catania, certain areas are rougher around the edges. For instance, you might want to avoid the Ballarò and Capo markets after dark in Palermo, as they can get a bit sketchy. Some parts of the city centre may feel a little dodgy in Catania. Use your common sense, and stick to well-lit, tourist-friendly areas.

2. Crowded tourist spots: While you’ll want to check out some of Sicily’s famous attractions, remember that they can get super crowded during peak season. To make the most of your trip, visit these hotspots during off-peak hours or opt for less touristy alternatives.

3. Remote areas after dark: Sicily has some stunning countryside and rural landscapes, but wandering around isolated areas after dark might not be the best idea. Stick to well-known paths and trails if you’re exploring the great outdoors, and try to finish your adventures before nightfall.

That’s about it. Remember to use common sense, stay aware of your surroundings, and trust your instincts. You’re bound to have a fantastic time exploring the wonders of Sicily.
