1. Taormina – where to stay for luxury & beautiful surroundings ⭐️

Taormina is a town that evokes feelings of warmth and excitement for everyone who has been there.

It is a true gem on Sicily’s east coast, offering stunning views of the Ionian Sea and Mount Etna, one of Sicily’s best-known attractions, from every corner.

One of the reasons I always recommend Taormina as a base in Sicily is its fantastic historical sites and highly cosy atmosphere.

The town features a well-preserved ancient Greek theatre, the fascinating archaeological park, Isola Bella, and the medieval Castello di Taormina – all must-sees.

Taormina is a charming town with narrow, cobblestone streets filled with small shops and cosy cafés. Here, you can explore, discover local treasures, and enjoy an authentic Italian espresso.

When hunger strikes, visit the local restaurants and indulge in delicious Sicilian dishes, which I adore.

And of course, there are beaches! Taormina is surrounded by crystal-clear waters and beautiful beaches where you can relax and soak up the sun.

Spiaggia di Isola Bella and Lido La Pigna are both beaches close to Taormina town.

It should be noted that if you’re looking for the best beaches in Sicily, Taormina isn’t the place to stay – I’ll cover other areas with better beaches later in this guide.

You should stay in Taormina for its beautiful town, cosy streets, cafés, and restaurants on every corner, and a unique, welcoming atmosphere.

The town and surrounding area of Taormina are famous among travellers worldwide. It gained even more fame after featuring in one of the best TV series of 2022: The White Lotus.

So, if you also watched White Lotus season 2, you already know Taormina – it was at the Four Seasons hotel in Taormina where the series was filmed.

The hotel is also called San Domenico Palace.

So, if you dream of staying at the White Lotus Hotel in Sicily, you should book yourself into the Four Seasons in Taormina, but it’s not a cheap experience.

The price is steep, so I think most of my readers would prefer to stay somewhere more affordable.

In that case, Hotel Ariston & Palazzo Santa Caterina could be a great option.

This 4-star hotel has a prime location, approximately halfway between the town centre and Isola Bella Beach.

The hotel has its own pool and restaurant, making it a suitable choice for those who want to stay in Taormina without breaking the bank.

Cefalù is one of the best places to stay in Sicily.

I’m excited about Palermo because of its impressive architecture and countless historical sites. The city is home to Palazzo dei Normanni, an impressive royal palace that is an absolute must-see.

The Palermo Cathedral and many churches and palaces in the Arab-Norman style will make you feel like you’re stepping into another time.

Palermo is a true mecca for food lovers. The city is famous for its colourful food markets, such as Ballarò and Vucciria, where you can find everything from fresh produce to local delicacies and street food.

And then there’s the vibrant nightlife! Palermo has a wealth of bars, clubs, and restaurants where you can enjoy an aperitivo, listen to live music or dance the night away.

The city is full of energy, and there’s always something to do, no matter what time of year you visit.

It’s primarily a good idea to stay in Palermo if you’re travelling to Sicily outside the high season.

I wouldn’t choose to stay in the city centre if I travelled to Sicily in July, as it can get sweltering.

You’d probably prefer to be closer to some beaches – or stay in the northern part of Palermo (in the city/district of Mondello), where you’ll find Mondello Beach, one of the most beautiful in Sicily.

To me, Palermo embodies a genuine Sicilian experience. When you stay in this fascinating city, you’ll have an unforgettable holiday combining culture, history, food, and celebration in a beautiful, vibrant atmosphere.

Palermo is Sicily’s main city, so it’s easy to find hotels in all price ranges here as in Catania. Let’s look at a few places I would book if I were going to Palermo.

Let’s start with a relatively cheap hotel in the city centre.

Stay in Mondello, 20 minutes outside Palermo (the best beach in Sicily?)

The following hotel is located in Mondello, just north of Palermo, but it deserves mention as Mondello Beach is probably one of the best in Sicily.

So if you want to combine a city break with a fantastic beach, consider a hotel in Mondello.

For me, Syracuse is the perfect place to experience Sicily’s history and beauty. When you choose to stay in this charming city, you’ll be spoiled with ancient wonders and picturesque streets.

There isn’t a beach in the city, but if you rent a car, the city is a good base for exploring the surrounding areas. For example, you can drive to Spiaggia dell’Arenella beach (Spiaggia means beach in Italian – and it’s a good word to know if you’re going around the island).

• Good base for exploring southeastern Sicily 

Places to stay in Syracuse

The city has over 120,000 inhabitants, so we’re talking about one of the larger cities in Sicily, and therefore there is a wide selection of hotels here.
